Thanks. That makes more sense because from what I remember, those are sites that weight errors more than they weight range relative to Fangraphs. I tend to agree with Fangraphs on that one, and their assessment of Yoan as the #3 defensive 3B in baseball is so different than the one you're mentioning that it really highlights the difference in formulas
-
It's certainly possible, but when you're talking about a 26 y/o SS who has been playing baseball for only ~10 years, I will almost always take the more optimistic angle with respect to development, especially on defense since he has the physical tools to replicate his 2018 performance Does Castellanos as a RF qualify as a quality hitter to you? Because I think he's gonna be one of our big additions.

Not that it really matters, but what I would've liked to see is: -Castillo DFA -Collins and Mercedes up -Abreu 1B 80% of the time, DH 20% of the time -McCann C 65% of the time, bench 35% of the time (roughly the same as now) -Collins C 35% of the time, 1B 20% of the time, DH 20% of the time, bench 25% of the time -Mercedes DH 60% of the time, PH for Collins (DH/1B) vs LHP late in games This is a long-winded way of saying that there was indeed a way to get Abreu daily PAs, McCann the same amount of reps that he normally gets, Collins appearances 75% of the time, and Mercedes enough ABs where he isn't just sitting around
-
Yes, and he is worse than 2018, but what I'm arguing is that his 2018 defense is more indicative of how his next few years at SS will be than his 2019 defense
-
To clarify, I agree that his main problem this year is routine plays. My comment about players getting dinged for errors as a result of their range was a general statement about my thoughts on the stat
-
Which site says that?
-
To Peterson and Thompson, no, especially after the reports this week that there's a divide between the Washington FO/coaching staff about whether Peterson should have even been retained. I think Guice is gonna be an 18+ touch per week guy this year, if healthy, and unless their coaching staff is just playing mind games, all their talk lately makes it seem like they're all in on him. The Eagles defense is very good but I think Guice will get enough touches to make him a good starting option. My opponent is starting him at RB2 too and I think it's a good move.

He's among leaders in errors so I figured that would be a turn off for people. Fangraphs has him as the #3 3B defensively though, obviously behind Chapman and Arenado. I tend to think that's accurate, maybe Machado at #3 instead, but Moncada is in that tier.
-
This year, his problems are definitely more on the routine plays. His range stats were really good prior to this season though, so I guess I'm assuming that they'll revert to the norm next year
-
I guess I feel the same way about the whole defense this year. I don't think Jimenez is unplayable in LF, I don't think Anderson is a horrible defensive SS, I don't think Engel is that great in CF, and I think Moncada is elite defensively at 3B. Apparently all 4 of those are unpopular opinions.
-
The problem is also that so much of this is semantics based. I'd rather have a SS with 25 errors and the best range in baseball than one with 5 errors and no range, for instance. And the bold doesn't apply when an error is charged to a player on a ball that he only got to due to his range. Errors actually put better defensive infielders at a disadvantage for that reason.
-
My argument is that errors as a statistic are meaningless, mostly because they are completely subjective. Tim was one of the better defensive shortstops in baseball in 2018.
-
It is extremely weird how Matt Skole, AJ Reed, and other AAAA players with worse stats than Collins come up and instantly bat cleanup, but Collins bats 9th. But there's absolutely no rhyme or reason to Renteria's decision making anyway.
-
Yeah I'm really looking forward to Castillo/Skole/Palka getting reps over Collins and Yolmer playing over Mendick
-
Surprised that they didn't add Ruiz
-
It's like people didn't even watch him in 2018 (specifically June-September, or most of the season). I have a really hard time believing that he'll never regain that level of defensive play
-
And then he mocks anyone who considers him to be "negative" when it's one of the most apt descriptions possible.
-
Gordon is certainly a fine defender in LF, but has a 92 wRC+ this year and has not had one above 92 since 2015. While he's an obvious upgrade over Engel/Palka types, why not aim higher?
-
His exit was as mysterious as his tenure. Guess we'll never know if he was responsible for a lot of the adjustments from guys like Sheets, Collins, etc.
-
For another organization, yeah it'll be interesting!

Pineiro ended up making 3 field goals (3/3) and missed the lone XP. I think he's the guy. I also think they'll go for 2 more often, not just due to kicker uncertainty but also because Nagy is smart and soon enough people will be going for 2 almost every time
