QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 30, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) Breaking Ben Zobrist down as a mere super utility player is oversimplifying him beyond recognition. It'd be like saying that Chris Sale has only been a swing guy because he's got about the same amount of relief appearances and starts over the last 5 years. That's absurd, no? The guy has absolutely been one of the most valuable players in the game over the last 5 years, moreso than RA Dickey. Over the last 5 years, he's accumulated 26.9 fWAR, good for 10th in the MLB. The only pitchers rated higher are Kershaw, Verlander, and Felix. WAR is not the end all, be all, but that paints a hell of a picture and if you think that Ben Zobrist is not going to cost a lot to acquire based on the idea that he is a "super utility player," you are going to be sorely mistaken. He absolutely is worth a top return and he will fetch a top return. So you are again comparing a super utility player to a potential cy cyoung winner, three more cy cyoung winners with one of them also being a mvp. Any other cy cyoung pitchers you want to compare a super utility player to. Your are bringing up him having a high war but wouldn't him being a super utility player have a affect on that. He played 5 positions last year so that has to take in account for is war. where is his break down per position.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 30, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) He's far too valuable a player. RA Dickey fetched Noah Syndergaard and Travis d'Arnaud (as well as Wuilmer Becerra) 2 years ago going into his age 38 season. I think that's a little excessive in hindsight, but it's going to take some very good prospects to get Zobrist. You are comparing a super utility player to a cy young award winner. Dickey had a career year in 2012 and won the cy young. That's why he was traded for top prospects. Zobrist isn't worth that type of return. Yes he is valuable but he is a super utility player that will be 34 in may next year and and is in his last year before free agency. I highly doubt teams are giving up top talent for a super utility player.

Ben Zobrist would be a nice fit for White Sox, who currently see 2B as competition between Micah Johnson, Carlos Sanchez & Leury Garcia. https://twitter.com/philgrogers/status/549972921670963200 Key for White Sox w/Zobrist lies in Rays' interest in Dayan Viciedo and CWS willingness to deal significant prospects. Serious talk likely. https://twitter.com/philgrogers/status/549975570692702208

Seattle was lukewarm on Viciedo before Ruggiano, expected DFA. But Hahn was confident situation will be resolved. Guess: other teams on DV. https://twitter.com/CSNHayes/status/545300251700379648

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Dec 17, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) Looks like this mysterious hitter could be Ian Desmond The Mariners were linked to him and Jordan Zimmerman but Desmond has 1 yr left at 11 million. Mariners were balking at the price to acquire them

Expect Dayan Viciedo to be traded. Hahn to @CSNChicago: "In all probability it will be another club that sees him in a greater role." https://twitter.com/ChuckGarfien/status/545026112498040833 Hahn continued: "and usually those things have a way of working themselves out." https://twitter.com/ChuckGarfien/status/545026197357228034 Rick Hahn is still a busy guy. Just before our interview today he got a call about a player. https://twitter.com/ChuckGarfien/status/545026494779518976

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2014 -> 02:53 PM) That's not true. Quintana has options that will take him through the end of 2020. I missed the options then only caught the free agent in 2019

QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 15, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) I'd had the same logic float through my mind last night... about an hour later - I did a 180 and am now against it. Think about the future implications... 1.) It could potentially limit us if we are looking to extend Sale / Abreu in a few years. 2.) It could potentially prevent us from extending Shark. 3.) We have a potential cost effective front line starter in Rodon close to coming in. 4.) Scherzer is likely going to be paid like an ace for 4 years of decline. 5.) The starting pitching market in 1 more year for FA is much more robust. Technically it wouldn't stop the sox from trying to extend sale or abreu. Both of their contracts come up at the 2019. Quintana comes up at the end of the 2018 season. The way hahn has added the free agents so far this offseason has all of their contracts coming off at the end of 2018. If danks, Laroche and ramirez all come off their contracts when they are supposed to that's 37+ million coming off at the end of 2016 season. If they get ride of some of them sooner then we save sooner. Duke and cabrera come off the books then at the end 2017 season with 19+ million. Add in the 13 for Robertson coming of at the end of 2018 that's basically 70 million coming off the books between the end of the 2016 season till 2018. Sox will have money then

melky is said to have had a 4-year offer. but he decided he preferred #chisox. 4-yr team is unknown. https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/544253839902535680

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) Yeah, but then the "WTF was his 2013 season" worry hits, where he put up a .682 OPS right after the suspension and didn't last a full season. With how his career has gone, I could easily convince myself that was the year he was clean & that last year he went back on something to try to get another contract. But anyway, still a move they had to make. His 2013 season was due to injuries. he had knee injury and then a tumor on the spine. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseba...from-lower-back

Melky Cabrera's 3-year, $42 million contract is only slightly backloaded. The #WhiteSox will pay him $13 million in 2015. https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/544184468568018944

The #Whitesox will trade Viciedo for sure, #Mariners?, now that Melky Cabrera signed 3-year, $42 million deal, as @MLBBruceLevine reported https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/544168083192311808

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 09:37 AM) Yes, and it still may not have been possible. Beane may think the Toronto guys are awesome and the package I am proposing is awful. In any event, the team is much better now than it was the day the season ended. the issue is most teams didn't even know he was available. I'm sure if they knew he was then alot of team would have been after him

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 12, 2014 -> 09:08 AM) no, it does not give the sox any flexibility in the upcoming yrs. the sox will be stuck like Dodgers, Philly and some other teams. Let's think about this. Some of the bigger contracts we have is coming off the books in two year if not sooner for some of them. Danks has 2 years left with 14.250 million aav, Laroche has 12 this year and 13 in 16, and ramirez with 10 each season. If these guys all stay on the team and leave in at the end of the 2016 year that's 37+ million coming off. If danks and alexei are gone before their contracts are up then we save money sooner. Signing melky is not going to make the sox stuck or not give them financial flexibility.
-
Here is another thing to think about that this projected war its now with current players. It's only Dec 12. Still a 115 days to opening day for the sox and every other team. Alot can change between now and then. No body knows who the opening day team is even going to look like.
-
I'm sorry but I take some projections with a grain of salt. I can guarantee you that no one projected the world series last year would have the royals and giants in it. To me you can project things a bit better when games are being played but look at the A's having a lead and looking like favorites until the faltered down the stretch. There is also teams that surprise every year or teams that are supposed to win and falter. To me the biggest things that people can't project is luck and you definitely need some luck as the season to go on for things to bounce you way. But you can also have things bounce against you and nothing that you can go about it.
