Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
Whisox05 replied to Rooftop Shots's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I like how alot of people are hardly mentioning johnson at second base. Keep putting semien and sanchez a head of him. Pretty sure sox have johnson going before the other two. If johnson can hit for average and gets on base then it's going to be fun watching that speed on the bases. I'm really hoping he works his way to the leadoff spot and eaton batting second is going to be alot of fun to watch. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) So wait, why do we want a catcher who isn't all that good at catching? Our DH spot isn't very open. Ya I'm not high on him. Hasn't been able to hit as well since the ped suspension. I would pass

Yes please. Keith law Grandal does a few things well but receiving isn't one of them. Pitchers preferred throwing to Rene Rivera. https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/539455241268514816

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
Whisox05 replied to Rooftop Shots's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Dan Hayes said that since the sox got Laroche to dh and split some time at first and the sox are wanting to upgrade left field with a likely LH bat that viciedo is odd man out. Said likely to deal him for a young bullpen arm. Viciedo did hit 21 home runs which is tied 25 in al and 46 in mlb. Still young enough someone would probably take him. Dunn only hit 22 home runs and we got a young pitcher back for him. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) I'm guessing he is just saying that because of the bogus ATL out report. Remind me to put baseball analyst in my Twitter profile. I can't imagine how much truth there is to the Braves rumors. The only one I would see the A's taking is Gattis with more control but I can't see the Braves taking a one year worth of Samardzija for him. Upton is owed 14.5 million for one year and really can't see the A's taking that much of a contract for 1 yr. -

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) My question is: Is Semien really that valuable? Keep seeing he could be the "center piece" to a deal and I'm sitting over here wondering if I missed something or what... Also just to clarify, Montas is the guy the Sox just got for... Dunn? Isn't he projected more as a late inning guy and not a starter? Montas was part of the peavy trade. Nolan sandburn was the pitcher in return for dunn -
Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
Whisox05 replied to Rooftop Shots's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think Samardzija could maybe change his stance on signing a extension. The cubs kept trying to lock him up and but you got to realize thats a team far away from competing. I think for the cubs to sign free agents right now they have to over pay or wait to closer to competing. Oakland was never going to lock him up cause they don't do that for big free agents. They sell a couple years before free agency or when a player is hitting arbitration and might get expensive. The sox might be more enticing for they have good young core players ready now. Alexei and maybe semien could be good for Samardjiza. Alexei gives a stop gap for Oakland for ss and they could always turn around and trade him at the deadline with a year and half potentially to the acquiring team. I have to imagine if the sox are trading for Samardjiza then they hope they have a chance of signing him to a extension. -
I think the deal was done based on the fact Donaldson is going to become arbitration eligible in 2015 and is going to get very expensive very quick. Lawrie is in the same area that he is arbitration eligible too in 2015 but will not likely cost as much since he hasn't produced as well or stayed healthy.

A couple days ago Dan Hayes was on sports talk csn talking about what's next for the sox. One of the areas talked about was the rh starting pitcher and said the sox were looking at a number 2 or 3 starter. Said something about shields like but he would be too expensive contract wise so said they would probably go the route of trade. http://www.csnchicago.com/video_content_ty...x-after-laroche -
On Stephen Drew Stephen Drew had a .237 OBP in 2014. That ranks as the 15th-worst single-season OBP by a 2B since 1914 (300 plate appearances min.). https://twitter.com/BtBScore/status/535302550778413057 Stephen Drew regarded one of best free agent shortstops, but his numbers since 2011 season lend pause: 1,000 at-bats, 220 hits. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/537606668318961664

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) Why would the Dodgers do that? Do you really think they view Alexei Ramirez to be such an upgrade over the next two years that they'd trade Matt Kemp - who is an overrated player but not a bad player - and would kick in $20 million on top of that for him? Funny alot of people are suggesting kemp for alexei on the board but you aren't bashing their opinions like mine. Apparently any opinion of mine on any topic is not good enough for you. Wondered why it took me so long to post anything after reading the board for years.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) I don't care if he was or was not overrated in 2011, I'm saying that right now, in today's game, he is overrated and may be the most overrated player in the league. The fact that you are using his offensive output and ignoring his defensive output to suggest that he is somehow reasonably worth $21+ mill per year is outrageous. Wow you don't apparently read what I'm saying. I'm not saying kemp is worth 21+ million. I'm saying if the dodgers paid him down to about 15 million a year then I would more accepting. You are acting like if the sox were somehow to get him they would be taking his whole contract which you know would not be the case. We all know kemp is not worth 21 million a year. The player I feel who is overrated right now is Hanley ramirez. He is going to get 22 million aav. That is bad.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:28 AM) You are using numbers from 2011 to justify bringing in Matt Kemp in 2015. I'm using those numbers to say he wasn't always overrated. If the sox got him for 15 million AAV over the 5 yrs and produces along the lines of his 2014 stats of .287 average, .346 obp, .506 slg, .852 ops, 25 hr, 38 2b and 89 rbi's then he's not that overrated.
-
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:18 AM) I still think Eithier is the way to go for us, not Kemp....Either + $15-20M of his remaining $56M, 1 of Van Slyke/Schebler, and a young bull pen arm like Chris Winthrow, Paco Rodriguez, or Yimi Garcia for Alexei makes the most to me. We could then go out and get a cheap guy like Stephen Drew for SS if we are really that worried about Semien/Sanchez's D. 1. Eaton CF 2. Micah/Semein 2B 3. Eithier LF 4. Abreu 1B 5. Laroche DH 6. Garcia RF 7. Gillaspie/Semien 3B 8. Flowers 9. Drew/Semien Not bad at all if you ask me....just add a #3 SP and 1 more bull pen piece and we would definitely compete for a playoff spot. I would prefer to stay away from ethier. He needs to be platooned. That package you suggesting is going to be more then alexei from the sox. I would also stay away from Semien at 3rd. He has 14 errors in 50 appearances there over the last 2 years. 33 appearances in 2014 and 10 errors alone. Until he fixes his defense there I would be worried.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) I'm going to be upset if the White Sox big plan is to acquire Matt Kemp. He is one of the more overrated players in the league. Given the contracts Hahn has given out to this point in his GM career, bringing in a guy with 5 years and $107 million left on his deal is not his MO, especially when said player is 30 years old. Kemp maybe overrated now but when he signed that contract he put up numbers teams dream about in 2011. Hit .324, obp .399, slug .586. Ops .986, 39 hr, 126 rbi's, 33 2b and 40 sb. If you can get the dodgers to knock off some money and is less the the amount that Sandoval and Hanley ramirez is going to get then he's not that overrated. The only thing slowing kemp down is the injuries but he played 150 games last year.
-
Here's a hypothetical trade idea. What if the sox sent alexei to the dodgers for kemp and 32 million. Basically it would make the sox only paying AAV at 15 million a year. The Dodgers would save 5 million AAV each year over the next 2 yrs and 15 million AAV each year for the last 3 yrs. I would say kemp would be worth the 15 million AAV if he stays healthy. Figure you would have 2 yrs of kemp in the field and can then dh some after that with Laroche off the books. Otherwise I would like see alexei dealt for younger talent that is major league ready and preferably pitching.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 07:35 AM) And M's were never planning to play Ramirez at SS. He can play 3B, LF, 1B (maybe) and DH from here on out. From what I read they would have had him at ss. He wouldn't play 3rd there since seager is there. Can't imagine him being good in that big out field. Probably other choice was dh.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 06:41 AM) Actually the red Sox are still trying to get sandoval. The rumors are Handley ramirez might play left field and red Sox still sign panda for 3rd. Sandoval is going to Boston now to per jon Heyman Sandoval has agreement to go to the red sox for 5 years, close to 100M https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/536861534237229056

The leverage for the White Sox on Alexei has to be really good. With Hanley ramirez going to Boston it now leaves the Mariners needing shortstop now since they wanted Hanley. Sofar the teams needing a shortstop are the Mets, Yankees, dodgers, mariners, A's and supposedly the marlins. Let the bidding begin.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 10:57 PM) It's probably much more likely that Sandoval returns to the Giants, or signs with San Diego. That's fine with me. I wasn't enthused about giving him a big fee agent contract. Moreover, a left handed hitting third baseman is not one of our big needs, now with LaRoche. Gillaspie will be fine at 3B, if he improves his defense a little, and we let someone else take his place vs lefties. Actually the red Sox are still trying to get sandoval. The rumors are Handley ramirez might play left field and red Sox still sign panda for 3rd.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 07:59 PM) I'm just curious. Have you read the all of the recent posts in this thread? Sanchez is far better suited for 2ND, and the Sox will likely need him there, as Micah Johnson is not a Major League defensive second baseman. Semien is not an acceptable MLB defensive SS. So how do we know Micah Johnson is not a major league defensive second basemen. He hasn't even played a game in the majors. We had a good defensive second baseman in Beckham but see he is not on the team cause he couldn't hit. If johnson comes up and produces offense and acceptable defense then we only have to worry about ss if alexei is traded. But time will tell us in spring training what johnson is fully like. The thing about semien at ss is the fact he's only appeared there 6 times in his major league career. 3 time in 2013 and 3 in 2014. Of the 6 times semien has been there only 4 games started. So he hasn't fully gotten a look there. He has appeared at 3b the most over the last 2 seasons at 50 times but has 13 errors. So he may not be the best suited there unless he works out his defense better. His second most played position is 2b with 29 appearances with 4 errors. The thing we do need to look at is no one besides alexei has hardly gotten a look at ss cause ramirez has started 157 games there 14.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 02:52 PM) Garcia should not be on the MLB roster if we want to compete. Simple as that. He would be a fine September call up for pinch running and such but that is about it. I really wish they would have kept Garcia in the minors last year to get consistent at bats. I remember reading somewhere that the sox were surprised his bat skill were so down. If the sox are competing this year then they shouldnt have any of the group of sanchez, garcia, johnson, semien, or saladino being bench players. would prefer who ever wins the second base job and if they trade alexei the ss position being only ones on the roster. rest being in the minors getting at bats and bring in veterans for the bench spots.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Phil Rogers @philgrogers 3m3 minutes ago White Sox likely to finalize Adam LaRoche deal Monday. Stockpiling SS depth, with AAA regular Juan Diaz the latest. Alexei Ramirez in play. I had seen somewhere else too that Laroche was supposed to take his physical on monday when he signs. means a move of some sort has to be done in the next 24 hours to clear a roster spot. still would prefer the sox dealt ramirez to get pitching.

I'm sure the Astros are going to be asking pretty high on castro and fowler. Castro was a former first round draft pick and not going to give him a way cheaply. Plus the fact castro still has 2 yrs before free agency. Fowler will be probably high just for the fact the astros need talent. Bassitt and Webb would be high I think for fowler just because we are desperate for bullpen help. Trading away need doesn't help.
