QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) For what it's worth Buster Onley ranked the top 10 SS's in baseball in an insider article today. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster-olney/post?id=8669 According to the article he ranked them...."Through conversations with team evaluators, general managers and our own statistical analysts" to come up with this list. The list...and I'll put a breif synopsis of why each guy is ranked where they are according to Buster 1. Simmons- Basically he's by far the best defensive SS in the game is still young and fairly cheap. 2. Peralta- He's top 5 in both OPS and defensive runs saved among SS's the past 3 years. 3. Desmond- His combo of speed and power makes him a "dynamic" player 4. Tulo- If it wasn't for injuries he would be clear cut #1 5. Hardy- GG defense and 20 HR power make him one of the best 6. Crawford- Didn't say much....just that he's consistent and saves runs on D 7. Aybar- Consistent hitter who puts the ball in play and doesn't K 8. Alexei- (copy and pasted whole excerpt) He has some value in the trade market (see below). Justin Havens of ESPN Stats & Info sent along this note about his defense and offense: “He may be slipping defensively, at least as measured by defensive runs saved -- he’s gone from +14 to +1 to -4 since 2012. Also, through the end of May, he was hitting .329 with a .479 slugging percentage; after that, he hit .243 with a .370 slugging over a span of 423 plate appearances." 9. Escobar- Likened him to Hardy...consistent all around 10. Castro- shows flashes but his D is bad and isn't consistent enough Well there it is....feel free to pick it apart. And remember to save all rude comments for Buser Olney. I'm just the messenger. I did notice the offensive point as the year was going on for alexei. He hit .300 through abut the end of June and just fell off. He pretty much had 3 good months and 3 crappy months. Hit .342 in april, .305 may, .230 june, .235 july, .291 august, and .209 in September.

I have to image it would be quintana plus just for bruce. Bruce has 3 yrs on his contract. The Cardinals paid for 1 yr of Heyward and 2 yrs of Walden with 4 yrs of miller and 6 yrs of jenkins. Can't imagine what the red would want for bruce. Tho I can't believe the reds have latos, leake, cueto and Simon all going into free agency next yr. That's sucks to lose 4 starting pitchers all at once.

We don't know a 100 percent montero can't hit again. We do know the sox catchers can't hit to begin with. One stat I didn't realize is flowers struck out 159 times last year. We need to try to upgrade that spot if possible. Now I could possibly see a danks for montero swap. The dbacks are pretty desperate for pitching. Montero has had 2 down seasons in a row and his 40 million over the next 3 seasons is a sunk cost as in danks 28 million for 2 yrs is with us. If the dbacks are tying to ask for something better then the likes of danks then they are going to eating a ton of money.

Listed on white sox website about sox looking into Miguel Montero also. http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/2014/11/21/...-miguel-montero

Buster Olney Rival evaluators say the White Sox asking price on Alexei Ramirez is steep, to the degree that you'd want to be buying in for 2-3 years. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/535600657445945344

Ready to hear groans on this one but if micah johnson comes into spring training and plays really well then him and Eaton are my 1/2 punch at the top of the order. Johnson gets on and steals bases with Eaton being able to handle the bat behind him.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 09:15 AM) I also don't think that scenario is part of the "dream package" KW promised, either. We might as well hire MAYHEM from the All-State Commercials to patrol LF in that case. We already have MAYHEM in left field. His name is Dayan Viciedo.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 08:47 AM) They also have Freiman for 1B. Seem pretty set...except for the back-end of their rotation...and they replaced Cespedes bat (finally) with Butler, at least in their minds. They probably still need a shortstop

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 07:59 AM) for me. and i am interjecting here, i really like any 3 of the catchers from Oak. they all can play 1b, dh and of course catching. 1 of them can play 3 b and the other can also play the OF. they are cost control. the thing is, if Oak was needing some young pitchers, and are incline to trade, would they be interested. Vogt is the only one to play any time at first. Norris only played there once in his career and jaso only twice. Figure jaso and Norris are primary catchers with vogt backing them up and at first would have to imagine pretty hard to pry one lose.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) That's true that the good prospects are at least a year away, but the Sox currently have 3 5th-starters in the rotation and probably another 1 or 2 that could deliver similarly. so they are going to have to sign a #3ish pitcher to be competitive. That would make Danks (or another) expendable. So they should be willing to ship Danks in any number of trades, whether to absorb money, or a change of scenery move (Etheir/Danks) or whatever. Yes the sox have a bunch of 5th starter type option. For the sox to compete they only need to have one as the 5th starter. that means they need to get 2 more starters. I'm not saying the sox shouldn't try to upgrade from danks but if he is stuck on the team hes not the worst pitcher in the world. if he puts up the numbers of 2014 or better then hes not going to kill the sox. whats going to kill them is having a bunch of 5th starter types. Im sure the sox would like to unload danks but if it was easy to do then they would have done it already. so im guessing the would have to eat a good amount of the contract and they dont usually do that. i really dont like the idea of swapping the one bad contract for another. If it was for 2 years like danks and possibly got us something we were missing then fine but more years on the other contract means more time stuck with it.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 10:50 AM) Nobody has said this. Barring injury or falling off the rails completely, Rodon will pitch for the White Sox this year out of the rotation and will probably end up around 150-160 innings overall. I think they'll acquire another starting pitcher. At that point, your top 4 will likely be Sale, Quintana, new guy, and Rodon. Whether the 5th is Danks, Noesi, Bassitt, Jack McDowell, Wilbur Wood, or whoever, it doesn't matter. No one said that but you complained he wasn't league average. No one in the majors has everyone at league average. Eminor3rd said cause of his performance he should have been sent down to Charlotte if it wasn't for his contract. Shouldn't Verlander have been sent down for the tigers if it wasn't based on his contract for last year
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) They don't have to sink a ton of money into the rotation. There will be options available both via free agency and trade that will be worthwhile investments, and the Sox have Rodon sitting in the minors (along with guys like Beck, Bassitt, Danish, and Montas in the mid-to-high minors) who could make an impact as well. If you want someone better them danks starting next year right off that bat you will have to put a good amount of money or prospects to get it. If are not happy with danks era and want better then the sox shouldn't have noesi in the 4 rotation either. Look at the teams who made the post season and tell me non of them didn't have a guy with the a era in the 4. Again no one knows when rodon will be available. Beck, Danish and Montas still could be ways away.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 10:36 AM) Pretty sure that's not what he was saying. From wite earlier in the thread: "I don't want them going with [Danks] out of veteran deferance or contractual status. I want them going with him because he's one of the 5 best starting pitchers, even if that's below league average." Someone else said danks is bad because of his high above league average. Pretty much said if he's not league average then he shouldn't be in the rotation. Right now he is one of the best starting option the sox have. You have sale, quintana, noesi and danks. Carroll posted a 5.40 era in his 19 starts last year. Rienzo posted a 5.97 era in 11 starts last year. The only one to not have extensive time pitching in the rotation was bassitt. No body knows what happening with rodon. For the sox to have a better option then to have a a guy like danks i the rotation then they need 3 new pitchers.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) The point is not to have one of the best 5th starters in the league though, or to have an OK 5th starter. The point is to win ball games. If there's a superior option, would you still insist on using Danks because he's a perfectly fine 5th starter? That's the point I'm trying to make at this time. There are superior options other then danks but do you want the sox to sink a ton of money into the rotation then. Scherzer is a superior option. So your saying if we can replace danks we should get scherzer. Also for the sox to have league average in the rotation then the sox need to have 3 new starters to go with sale and quintana. How about we get Lester, scherzer and shields so that we don't have to worry about guys like danks or the other options the sox have that aren't danks types with bad eras. Maybe we should get Samardzija for a bunch of prospects and replace danks that way.

My 2 cents on danks. The difference with duke vs danks is that duke is a failed starter and danks is not. You guys are complaining about paying 10 million AAV for miller but would be fine with danks and 14 plus million in the pen. If danks is on the team is most value to the team is starting pitcher. Again he made 32 starts tied with quintana on the team and had 193 innings second most behind quintana. A 5th starter to make 32 starts, 193 innings and sub 5 era isn't nothing to sneeze at. Yes he's being paid way more then a 5th starter. I want to bring up brandon Mccarthy. His last deal signed was for 2yrs/18 million for 2013-14 seasons. His 2012 numbers was a 3.24 era with only 18 starts made and 111 innings. Those stats got him 9 million AAV. Jason Hammel signed a 1 yr 6 million contract for 2014 season. His stats in 2013 was a 4.97 era, 23 starts and 139 innings. Both are possibly going to be at 10 million or more a year for just about having career years for them in parts of 2014 season.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 03:57 PM) First off, no chance of Pederson coming back for Alexei, that's just beyond unreasonable. The Dodgers are trying to make room for Pederson, not trade him. I'm hoping the Sox are focused on some kind of package around Schebler. What no Pederson. Kinda funny alot people thought we should get Snydergaard for alexei.

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) My first reaction was "meh" and I certainly won't be surprised in the game threads when he becomes known as Scott Downs 2.0. He's definitely not KW's pick, since he doesn't throw the ball through a brick wall. No duke throws the ball at the wall and it bounces back and causes some injury to him and his out for the year -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 01:04 PM) No, this is exactly what I don't want. Signing one year wonders who are over 30 and have been released a couple of times the last 2 years. Coming into this season, the White Sox didn't think he was worth 1/5 of what they paid Scott Downs or they could have signed him for exactly that. Now he's worth $15 million over 3 years? On top of that duke was a non roster invite with a 850,000 dollar deal with the Brewers. Has one good year and now makes 15 million over 3 years. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) I'd give them a one in a million shot of signing Andrew Miller at this point. So you're saying there's a chance -

Really hope they add another left hander to the pen. If it's miller then I would ok with this deal otherwise I'm worried. Sox haven't had good luck signing good left handed reliever. Hopefully he doesn't turn into will ohman or scott downs. Hopefully he doesn't continue his jekyll and hyde seasons. I guess time will tell -

J Stankevitz Zach Duke's fastball averaged 88.1 mph. Last year w/Milwaukee: 89.7 mph. Strikeout rate more than doubled. #WhiteSox https://twitter.com/JJStankevitz/status/534768820473565184
