You already said you don't think JR is going to do what's necessary to push for the playoffs.

Then you said " build it organically". I'm not sure what that means in your mind but when has that ever happened under JR ?

Organically as in cross our fingers and hope enough prospects develop because our cheap owner isn’t going to  sign the type of free agents necessary to take the team over the top.

  2. I’m very interested in seeing what Brody Brecht does this season for Iowa. If he shows more polish in his 2nd year as a fully dedicated pitcher he could shoot into the top 5. Obviously risk involved, but the sky is the limit for him

Mena has been multiple years below league average his entire career and was the single youngest arm to pitch in AAA last year.  His stats should be taken with a ton of context.

Seems like there’s a very fine line between that being a positive thing for Mena and just organizational mismanagement. Being promoted to AAA at 20 without any kind of sustained success in the minors is definitely an interesting development path to say the least.
It would be 1 thing if Mena had dominant stuff and just needed to hone it, but the fact is that if he doesn’t add at least a couple of MPH’s to his average fastball velocity he’s going to have a real uphill battle. His fastball was killed in AA/AAA last year. My fear for him is that his + curveball worked well vs young minor league talent, but won’t get as many chases as he advances in levels and the rest of his arsenal being average will get exposed. But of course he’s still very young so he could prove me wrong.

At the end of the day Mena is the Sox 9th/10 best prospect…meaning he is the 17/18th best prospect in most respectable organizations. The typical “lotto ticket” arm we’ve all been asking for as the 4th piece in a Cease trade. The fact that we traded that for a 26 year old that has a decent shot at being an above average MLB regular really shouldn’t elicit any overly negative reactions.

I have liked most of what Getz has done since taking over considering his budget and inherited roster.

Maldonado and this move would be the exceptions. Not saying they should not have traded Mena, but don’t see the point in acquiring Benintendi’s tiny baby brother who will be 27 this season for Mena.

Fletcher is the type of player they should be picking up on waivers or signing to a Minor League FA deal, not dumping a decent prospect to acquire.

What world do you live in where 26 year olds that have a great track record of hitting at every level are just floating around on the free agent list? What a ridiculously bad take.

And Mena is a mediocre prospect that got overrated amongst the mess the Sox have in the minors. A RHP that has a 90 mph fastball and below average control isn’t a recipe for success…and the results show so far in the minors.

  5. Maybe I’m alone but I’m fine with Kjerstad, Beavers, Horvath and McDermott

I think Beavers is a an underrated 2nd piece, he’s got the tools to be at least a borderline all-star. 20/20 hitting .270 with a .850 OPS and really solid D in either corner.

(fully expecting Orioles fans to say this is too much)

  6. Crazy, I completely forgot Crochet was even on the team…

At this point I’m pretty indifferent on him…if he wants to start, sure knock yourself out kid. But also seems like it will be another lost year for him…stretching his arm out to be a legit starter and keeping him at a realistic innings limit at the same time seems like a bit of an oxymoron. He’s going to need to be shutdown by the time he’s ready for the majors…if he makes it that far.

But then again, unless he’s the closer, having him pitch 50 or so innings out of the pen in the 7th inning for a 100 loss team also isnt going to help him or the Sox.

They have six starters now with Desclafini and a pretty deep minor league system as well.

Fathom keeps mentioning Woo and Miller.

I mean not sure I’d count DeSclafini personally…long man in the pen/depth, sure.
And what would be a realistic innings limit with Woo this year? Seems like going into the season with him still in AAA ready for if/when there’s an injury wouldn’t be the worst idea.

Of course I have no idea if the Mariners are actually interested, just going by the rumors.

  8. Mariners don’t have much pitching, but they could put together a very nice 3 hitter package without damaging their system too much- Gabriel Gonzalez, Michael Arroyo, Jonatan Clase, + lotto ticket arm is a pretty nice package

  9. I just hope all of the Orioles fans stick around for when the harsh reality hits that the AL East isn’t going to have a 2 straight down years and they find themselves in 3rd place trying to hang on to a WC spot.

And yes, all of us White Sox fans are well aware of how terrible the franchise is…but at least we are dealing in reality.
