    From an MLBTR chat today;

    Up in the air

Who says no? Westburg, Stowers, Pham, and Wagner for Cease or

    Mark P

That's a pretty good offer, even if the White Sox are reportedly/seemingly looking to add pitching.  They'd probably want a higher-tier pitching prospect than Pham.

Yeah that’s honestly laughably bad. Orioles fans are apparently living on a different planet where cheap pitching gets traded for a bunch of middling prospects

    Rays FO, is that you?

If you are realistic about the state of the franchise and also about who our owner is…exploring trades for Robert makes a lot of sense. Obviously you only take an incredible deal, but Getz def shouldn’t be hanging up the phone if a team calls about Robert

Putting aside the rest of the package, I’d actually prefer that the WS take Norby and not Ortiz.  But I’ve been saying for a while that the WS could choose which one they want.

I’ll explain, though, why I think the WS would be well served by Ortiz.  Simply put, he’s an extremely fundamentally sound, rangy SS who makes every play you expect him to make and some plays you don’t expect him to make.  And I think it’s been so long since the WS have had a SS with those attributes that the fans have forgotten just how valuable that is.  I didn’t watch Tim Anderson day in and day out like you guys, but from watching him 6-9 times a year when the O’s played by WS, and looking at his defensive stats over his career, he gave away an awful lot of easy outs, messed up a lot of DPs etc.  And that wears on a team.

As to Ortiz’s bat, he’s not going to be upper echelon, but he’s not going to hurt you.  He’s got a sound approach and hits the ball hard consistently.  I’m guessing he settles in as a .710-.740 OPS guy, not bad at all for a guy with a plus glove.

As to his age, I’ll concede he’s a bit old for a prospect, but you’re looking at controlling his age 25-30 seasons, so it’s not really a problem.

This is probably more detail than you wanted, and to be clear, I’ve never suggested that Ortiz should be the lead piece, but in my opinion as a second piece he’d be a guy the WS would be very happy with.  Norby has his good attributes too, and I can see why some would prefer him since he’s younger and has more power, but to me Ortiz fills a pretty big need for the WS and would fill it well.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Ortiz doesn’t have value…but you just described a lot of the reasons for not wanting him. It’s mostly just about upside. The White Sox are far away from filling holes with solid players. We should be in the acquire as much talent with upside as possible and sort it out in 2 years stage. Hell, you guys can keep both Ortiz and Norby honestly. Beavers and Horvath probably interest me more.

Kerjstad, Beavers, Horvath and DeLeon  I would consider but would hope another team could beat. Anything less and I’ll roll the dice on Cease being able to string together 10 good starts to start the season

Ehhh I'm coming from the standpoint that this franchise is likely a decade out anyway from any sort of relevance and if we're not really getting needle movers for Cease then what's the point? May as well roll the dice on an awesome first half and see if you can get someone's actual top prospects. No one should be untouchable for a guy like Cease, especially if he returns to 2022 form. May as well give him that chance.

Yeah Cease is pretty much our Alamo. Trading him for a marginal return does nothing for the sad state of this franchise. Might as well hold your ground, take the risk, and trade him later than take a mediocre return now

    Who do you prefer?

I understand why orioles fans want to include Ortiz in a trade for a pitcher, but a guy who is going to be 26 before he reaches 500 AB’s doesn’t really make sense for the White Sox.

Kjerstad, Norby, Beavers and a pitcher like De Leon/Baumler

It was literally the first article I saw.  And it doesn’t really support “my view,” since I said from my very first post here that I’d be willing to give up Kjerstad/Cowser and Ortiz (and maybe an additional piece, if pressed by circumstances).  So really we are just quibbling about what “extra” the Sox would get.   I was just interested in what were the “so many” articles you  were talking about.   And I still don’t know.

What’s the package Sports Guy and James Fox discussed?   I can’t look it up because I’m not a Twitter/X member.

I haven’t been reading this whole thread (who could?)…but who agreed on Ortiz as the #2 piece? Big no thank you from me.

Eloy was being explored as a trade by himself supposedly. He has value, although not extensive. He’s not a throw in for cash considerations, he would add value to a trade if he were included.

I think he’s a guy to “throw in” to get 1 more good prospect out of a team if they need an OF’er instead of a lotto ticket prospect. Like if a team offered prospects 2, 6, 10 and 25 for Cease throw in Eloy and get 2, 6, 10 and 12

I don’t really see Eloy getting any kind of significant return in a stand alone trade

Other than we could spending the money on better flip candidates?

You think overpaying Maldonado by 2-3M is going to stop that? Let’s be realistic here. Whether the front office is competent enough to make smart signings to flip is a whole different discussion, but I promise Maldonado isn’t going to prevent anything.

What’s the payroll currently at? Like $90M? There’s gotta be at least $30M to play around with if they so choose.

  9. I have very little faith in Korey Lee so bringing in catching depth makes sense to me. Maldonado stinks, but maybe he can help the young pitchers.

And I have no why idea people are mentioning $ as a concern at all. Who cares? The team stinks, the payroll is very low as is, and Getz isn’t/shouldn’t be looking to sign any free agents to multi year deals right now. Maldonado could make $1M or $8M and it’s 100% irrelevant

They won 101 in an AL East while NYY and Boston had down seasons. And look what happened in the playoffs. Yanks added Soto and probably aren't done rearming. If the O's think they will waltz to the AL East again as is, hubris be thy name Baltimore...

The Orioles are owned and operated by a 94 year old man who has shown that he has no intentions of spending $ on the team. Orioles are going to have to wait another year or 2 when the team is sold to have hope of getting over the hump.

Do you buy this pitching stuff James?  Would Getz actually forgo the chance to solve both RF & 2B in one fair swoop with an Orioles trade?

This franchise has so many more holes to fill than just 2B and RF in the coming years that concentrating on any certain positions as the return is crazy. The next year should be about talent acquisition. Acquire as much young talent as possible (and take some chances on vets to flip) and figure out roster construction later.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t really like the pick, but they did just use the 15th overall pick on Gonzalez who likely ends up at 2B (wouldn’t say Sosa or Popeye are dead in the water yet either). Also not crazy to think that Colas figures it out and fills the RF hole.

Bottom line- get the most talent back as possible regardless of position. The only obvious pitfall to avoid would be getting too many 1B/DH types like the Sox have done previously…not sure that’s a worry with Getz prioritizing defense and athleticism tho.

  12. If Wyatt Langford were to be on the table from the Rangers could he possibly be the best available option and almost force Getz to take a lesser total/quantity package?

Would you do- Wyatt Langford, Brock Porter, Josh Stephan and Echedry Vargas for Cease?

India is just a guy. I fear the Reds would demand more than he's worth and Getz would be dumb enough to take him as a headliner based off his ROY season. There's a large enough sample size since which says his rookie year was the outlier.

I’m not arguing any of that. I listed him 1st only because he was the only major leaguer in the deal. The hypothetical deal I posted was 5 of the Reds top 10 prospects….plus India thrown in as a roll of the dice gamble that he could figure it out with a change of scenery. If the Reds value India too much then take him out of the deal, no problem.

    f*** NO

Why would you be so against taking a shot on a change of scenery scenario for India? Crazier things have happened. He doesn’t cost anything salary wise and is far from the highlight of the deal. Just a throw in gamble.

I mean, don't get me wrong, there is a fair share of trash.  But a lot of it has been recently acquired.  I think we're pretty much down to Deivi Garcia, Sammy Peralta, Lane Ramsey, Carlos Perez, and  Zach Remillard as legitimate DFA candidates.  I just listed of 5 guys - but its not very hard to squint and see each of those guys playing a role on the 2024 club - especially the relivers, and even Perez as the third catcher. Guessing Peralta and Remillard are next on the chopping block.

I’d personally have 0 problem adding another 3-4 guys, but that’s a whole different discussion.

But to answer your original question…only 2 of those 6 would need to be on the 40, India and Phillips. None of Arroyo, Petty, Stewart, or Cabrera were drafted/signed before 2021.

  16. Cease and Eloy to Reds for:

Jonathan India, Edwin Arroyo, Connor Phillips, Chase Petty, Sal Stewart, and Ricardo Cabrera

Reds keep Marte and Lowder but give up 1/2 of their top 10 for the Sox “haul”

Also frees up $ for the Sox to take shots in free agency on guys to flip later for more prospects later.

I mentioned the Phillies a while back. They could offer a great package but they have a solid five man rotation already, iirc.

Wheeler, Walker, Nola, Suarez, and Sanchez. The first four are obvious, and Sanchez broke out as a starter last year.

Not sure I’d pencil Walker in there….def not at #2. He didn’t touch the field in the playoffs and he also had some negative comments about the team in the media after the season. Wouldn’t surprise if he wasn’t on the team.

  18. Maybe they just aren’t interested, but I’m surprised at not really seeing much rumored interest from the DBacks. Cease fills a need for a team looking to capitalize on and sustain their success from last year without breaking their budget.
Also think Tommy Troy and Yu-Min Lin is as strong of a start to a package as we could ask for.
