You don’t think it’s a little disingenuous to add everything together and ignore that he made legit progress in his 2nd year in the OF? Obviously he’s still not good in the OF, but there’s a lot of hyperbole to your posts. -9 DRS for a guy going to put up a 120/130 wRC+ hitter is palatable in my opinion. I obviously don’t value RF defense as much as you do, but that’s fine. Nothing wrong with disagreeing. I just personally think it’s a little crazy to think the world would crumble and the Sox couldn’t win if Castellanos is in RF.
-
Based on what metric?
-
I’d much rather go after a RF’er than a DH. I don’t want Mazara playing RF defense much, nor should he be in the lineup vs LHP’s. Castellanos and Puig are about the only FA OF’ers that profile as a RF...and both leave a good amount to be desired with their D. Some trade targets still out there: Joc would still be nice, even tho he would need a platoon as well. Reddick would probably be pretty cheap to acquire from the Astros Same with Markakis from the Braves Haniger from the Mariners would be pretty ideal. Grandal Keuchel 1 of Joc/Haniger/Puig/Reddick Gio A RH RP like Bellances/Rondon/Strop I don’t think anyone could have complained about that offseason 2 months ago. Obviously everyone wanted Wheeler over Keuchel, but at least there was a plan B.

What is a realistic payroll ceiling for the sox?
TheFutureIsNear replied to Dominikk85's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I believe we were in the low 90’s before Gio and Keuchel. So we should be right around 115 now. That 82.5 on spotrac is only 12 guys, and it has all the young guys at 0....filling the roster to 26 will add a decent chunk of $ -
Keuchel to Sox, 3 years, 55.55 million; 4th year team option

Not going to pretend to have watched him much...but DRS and UZR are not fans -

As long as he can gel in the locker room I don’t hate the idea of Puig. Taking a flyer on Souza being healthy wouldn’t be a terrible idea either. Domingo Santana and Dickerson are decent options too, although they come with defensive ability in RF ?’s. A trade is always a possibility too. I wonder if we can get Seattle to trade for another questionable catcher with an enticing bat? Some sort of Collins for Haniger deal would be nice -

Hopefully the 4th year isn’t an easily obtainable vesting option, but happy with 3/55. The staff is now complete...let’s not stop with RF. I can live with a Mazara/McCann platoon at DH. -
I think it would be much easier to figure out a list of White Sox free agent signings that were not washed up when they got here.
-
Lol come on now...I get the frustration but this is ridiculous. It sucks, but the Sox aren’t going to be competing for a WS again next year. Knowing that info I can’t see why anyone would be so upset about not signing mediocre free agents. Cleary they will fill the rotation with someone. Does it rally make you fee better watching the Sox win 78 games with someone like Wade Miley vs 74 wins with someone else? b**** about the front office being cheap and not putting a real contender on the field all you want, but this angst over not signing insignificant free agents is crazy to me.

Mine actually just magically fixed itself in the past few days. I was having to request the desktop site for about 2-3 weeks straight and now no issues again.
-
I don’t doubt there’s a handful of teams that would be interested in McCann, but what could his value possibly be on a 1 year deal? Maybe trade him for a reliever with years of control? I can’t see getting anything significant for him so might as well keep him.

Plan B: Trade Fulmer and Basabe for Price +$27M, Michael Chavis, and Tanner Houck Sign Keuchel, Corey Dickerson, and Pedro Strop (Or pick your favorite reliever)

Sox and Sawks to see if the Price is Right
TheFutureIsNear replied to fathom's topic in Pale Hose Talk
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/david-prices-trade-value/ This writer on fangraphs suggests $60M in excess value suggesting Price would struggle to get 2/30 on the open market. Also said fair trades just to equal out Price’s negative value are Eduardo Rodriguez +$30M or Benintendi +$5M per year of Price’s contract. That seems like a little bit of hyperbole to me. I think the value of potential TOR pitchers always get inflated just because of how few become available. But nonetheless, we’re talking $40+ Mil in negative value attached to Price. Don’t know much about him, but what do people think about getting Chavis back in a hypothetical deal? Not alone obviously, maybe with Groome/Houck attached as well. But chavis looks like he has some pretty good pop and could start at 2B until Madrigal is up and then be the RH side of a DH platoon + backup at 2B/3B -
Surprisingly he’s still looking for a contract

This is taking the point I was making way out of context. I never said anything close to being against spending $. I just don’t see why people are upset about not signing mediocre players that aren’t going to help us win a WS. We should 100% still be going hard after Ryu, Bum, Keuchel (the latter 2 to a lesser extent). Nor should we be out on Castellanos or Ozuna. If in a month + they made no real efforts to sign any of these guys I’ll be right on board b****ing with you guys. But in the mean time I don’t care if other teams are signing the middle of the road free agents that aren’t going to do crap but make us win another 10 meaningless games.
-
Of course they aren’t...but throwing $ at the Porcello’s and other mediocre players of the world isn’t going to win them a WS either. There has to be some situational awareness here. We aren’t anywhere close to adding a few mediocre role player to winning anything. Criticize them for not being able to close the deal on Wheeler all you want. That’s fair. But being upset about missing out on lesser talent makes no sense to me.
-
You’re entitled to your opinions and I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong, but sounds like you want to spend $ just for the sake of spending $. Id rather spend $ to build a WS contender than just to try and build a team that wins 80 games next year. That does nothing for me personally. Yes it sucks that we will never be in on the top of the top free agents, but that’s something you’re just going to have to accept. We are in the same boat as probably 22-24 other teams in that regard though.
-
What other move besides Wheeler would you have liked them to make? If you went into the off season expecting Cole/Stras you were setting yourself up
-
Then don’t be a fan? If you’re just going to hold a grudge for every past mistake what’s the point? Encarnacion is a damn good hitter and it makes sense to have a stop gap until Vaughn is ready.
-
There’s nothing to b**** about if Encarnacion is signed. People are just b****ing to b**** at this point

Sox and Sawks to see if the Price is Right
TheFutureIsNear replied to fathom's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Last season it was a cyst on his wrist he had surgery to remove. I don’t think there’s any reason to think his arm is shot/compromised in any way. But obviously you can’t completely ignore the total time missed in the past few years either -
Even more entertaining than the rumors themselves are the wild conclusions people jump to based on very vague info.

Sox acquire Nomar Mazara for Steele Walker
TheFutureIsNear replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don’t see why they wouldn’t face 90% positive matchups throughout the year...especially with the new 3 batter rule for pitchers. Whether or not Engel keeps up his very small sample size split vs LH is fair. Leury on the other hand, does have good career splits vs LH -
I guess that came off more harsh than intended. I didn’t mean it to come off as “the front office is clueless.” I just find it really hard to connect the dots to a huge signing like Rendon because we got a RF that didn’t cost a lot. That just seems like a pretty big reach/pipe dream. But you’re right, who knows is the real answer. Anything other than 1 of Keuchel/Ryu/Bum is going to shock me at this point. Hopefully they really do have something up their sleeve that shocks me in a good way.
-
Not criticizing the overall plan...but I think the much more likely plan our FO had behind the Mazara trade was “cheap, LH, hits HR’s, and is young enough to sell his potential”. I highly doubt there was an in-depth master plan behind it.
