For all we know Hahn opened negotiations with that as a starting point and since then JR has taken over and now the 8/250 rumor surfaces. Not at all concerned.

But its the luxury tax threshold that's kept the big spenders out and the White Sox in the mix. Take away that luxury tax threshold and its likely both players are signed to huge contracts with other teams and we would be talking about signing scraps on the FA market. Without that luxury tax threshold small market teams would begin to vanish.

Dave is right. According to the rumors NYY didn't want to go above 200M. If the Sox offer was 175M the Yanks would still be in it.

Agree 100% Greg. They said they would spend for the right players and here they doing their best to sign one of them. Curious about who else they have their sites on. Would have to think a starting pitcher.

Wouldn't put it past Boras to drag this into February. JD Martinez didn't sign until February 19th last year and Boston was pretty much in a one team race to sign him. There are some similarities between the Boston/Martinez and Philly/Harper negotiations.

I hear you. I'm invigorated by the front office still being in the mix with a sizable offer on the table and seemingly willing to go higher. I didn't think the Sox had a snowballs chance in hell but the FO has changed that.

Jack you're looking too far into all the rumors. It's January 15th and the Sox are one of two teams left in the bidding for Machado. The Sox wouldn't be in it this late in the game if they and their offers weren't serious.
