I'm not worried about this one bit. It's part of the process. I remember the Yanks being the favorite just last week. Recently it was the Sox and now Philly.
Give it a day or two after the Sox counter and they will be the leaders.
Keep in mind this is the Phillies first offer while the Sox have had one on the table and can still counter the Phillies offer. Now shit is finally getting interesting.
Been to a few games like that. It sucks the place is a ghost town but its nice being able to sit where you like and not have to wait in line to take a piss after drinking many many beers.
The buyer never puts their best offer first. Negotiations have to start somewhere.
Sure, we could complain about the Sox low balling to get things started. Or we could appreciate the fact it was the White Sox to make the first offer to get things started.
It's not difficult to understand. Jay provides the Sox a left handed bat that can legitimately play all three outfield positions. He takes Leury out of CF ( thank goodness) and also bridges the gap to Robert, Gonzalez, Basabe and Rutherford.
These guys are 26 years old, in their peak and among the best in the game, they will get opt-outs. Gives them long term security if they decline ( see Heyward/Ellsbury) or if they are playing well they can opt-out and seek another 10 year deal around age 30. They would be dumb not to insist on an opt-out.
I disagree. It's obvious the penalties are harsh enough because it's deterring teams from spending stupidly and giving other teams a more legit shot at big free agents. As a Sox fan I don't understand your complaint.
That's because most fans and media understand how harsh the taxes are for going over and staying over. Without it you can bet Machado and Harper would have signed with one of those five teams and the White Sox would have never been in the mix.
It's not too surprising to be honest. There's some big money teams strapped by their payroll. Boston, LAD, cubs, Angels and Yanks are all out due to their payrolls being near the tax threshold. That's five huge players that aren't in the mix.
I'm not referring to notHahn with this replay but after reading this thread and several others, it all depends on the rumor. If it's what people want to hear they tend to go with it but if it's not what they want to hear they try to discredit the rumor. I take it all with a grain of salt until a deal is announced.
