Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week

QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 31, 2017 -> 03:01 PM) Man, I know its all we got right now but how are you guys still interested with offering up hypothetical's for Q? Havent we already ran through about all the possibilities like 1000 times through, if not more, for each possibility multiple times? One aspect you over looked is that we are obviously bored. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2017 -> 02:32 PM) As much as I think we match up well with the Cubs, I think they would have to WAY outbid everyone else in order to win Q from the White Sox. I'm on the fence to be honest. Part of me agrees the cubs should have to overpay but the other part me doesn't really care because adding Happ, Candelario and Jimenez would be a huge boost to a farm that could use more quality hitting prospects. Candelario is ready now.Happ could be ready for the '18 season and adding Jimenez to Basabe ( both outfielders) down in A ball would be fun to keep track of. Taking the rivalry aspect of it out of the equation. Those three hitters for Q is probably pretty close to fair value. Now bring the rivalry back into the equation ask ourselves, how much more will it take? This is the part I get hung up on because I'm not sure how much that "rivalry tax" is worth. -
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jan 31, 2017 -> 11:09 AM) I'd be very, very surprised if Rodon isn't moved in a few years. His agent is going to take him to free agency when the time comes and the Sox probably (unless their is new ownership in place) aren't going to be willing to meet the price he will be demanding. Mark I feel the same way. If Rodon comes close to his ceiling he will absolutely go to FA and Boris isn't known for signing extensions with his most talented clients so IMHO that's out of the question. This could be one reason why the Sox are trying to load up on pitching. Here's the way things could go down over the next few year's and what I could be the Sox approach. The Sox get their haul for Q which will likely add another high ceiling starting pitching prospect. Add that prospect to the list of Giolito, Lopez, Fulmer, Kopech, Hansen and that's alot of talent with some high ceilings. Each of those pitchers comes with a question mark or two but I think Giolito and Lopez stick as starters, Fulmer and Kopech are more of the wait and see approach. With the Sox rebuilding they give Hansen the chance to determine his own fate and not force anything. That said, I feel Hansen moves quickly over the next few years with, IMHO, potential to become a high end pitching prospect similar to what Glasnow is now. I think Hansen sticks as a starter when the time comes. I do admit I'm rather high on him . The variable in all this is the starting pitching prospect from the Q deal so it's hard to guess anything other than the Sox clearly desire another top starting pitching prospect. If things work out I think it's quite possible the Sox look to move Rodon during the '18/'19 off season for a haul that could replenish the farm or for MLB position player(s) to fill in a gap or two in the starting lineup. Both are nice options to have. Just a reminder that this is all best case scenario and could certainly turn out differently. The Sox good history with pitching leads me to think things will work out for the better and not the worse.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2017 -> 12:51 PM) This is what I keep thinking. With seemingly Houston, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh unwilling to put their top players, or maybe even top couple of players into these deals, the Yankees can just sit here and watch and one up everyone else's offer at any time they want. They can do it with top end player/s, or they can do a much better quantity deal than any of those other teams. Good point and that would be a Yankee kind of thing to do. It's kind of a similar approach to signing big named free agents except that they make an offer so big that very few teams, if any, can match or come close to the Yanks offer. Call me crazy but I get the feeling Theo is sitting on the fringe with Cashman waiting to see what the offers are to decide if they want to meet or exceed the offers. The cubs have the hitting prospects that are for the most part blocked at the big league level so the cubs could easily part with them without affecting their 25 man roster. It's probably more wishful sinful thinking on my part because I admit I really like Happ, Candelario and Jimenez as prospects. -
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 31, 2017 -> 05:47 AM) Well said. I absolutely love Q, but it would be much wiser for the Sox to cash in on him now and further the rebuild by trading him for a big prospect package than extending him. Like you said, the Sox should be able to develop his replacement anyway and I'd much rather use the money they'd potentially give him in an extension on a premier free agent like Machado or someone else. It would be a much better use of resources for a team like the Sox that struggles to develop hitting. Agreed. Trading Q for a good quality haul would do much more for the entire organization than adding two years to the end of Q's current contract. Trading Q is still the best thing to do for the organization. After sleeping on it I did come up with one very unlikely reason for keeping Q and possibly extending him but it's a huge "if". That very unlikely "if" would be if some crazy GM offered a huge haul for Rodon. Then I could see keeping Q around and possibly adding a few years to the end of his current deal. Even then its very risky extending him into age 32 and beyond unless the annual salary is reasonable which at this point there's no way of knowing. Let's say the crazy scenario of trading Rodon happened. Even then I see no point in extending Q until the winter before the '19 season. If Q is holding up strong, then offer a four year deal that starts by picking up the '19/'20 option years and adding two years on top of those. Waiting two more seasons before offering an extension would give the Sox a better idea of if they even need/want to extend Q and at what cost. Waiting two years also allows the Sox time to see what young pitchers have developed during that two year span. In theory it sounds OK but that's based on the huge "if" Rodon were traded for a huge haul which is unlikely since the smart money says hold onto Rodon for at least 1-2 more seasons to build more value. Now that we've explored unlikely scenerios and have come full circle. f*** it, just trade Q and further the rebuild.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 30, 2017 -> 09:58 PM) Keeping him makes little sense to me if you're not going to extend him early, because his departure after 2020 is right at the start of the White Sox's window. They get him for 1 year out of the time this group should be potentially ready to contribute, in exchange for spending 3 years here. That said, the reason I started dropping dollar amounts is that I often get the feeling these suggestions happen because people don't realize what they're talking about monetarily. If Jose pitches out his contract, remains a 4-5 WAR a year pitcher, hits free agency at age 31, he's going to be on line for a $200 million contract given what pitchers are getting right now and contracts going up over 5% a year. He already has some monetary security, with his next deal he can knock it out of the park. There's a huge difference for him monetarily between him hitting FA at age 31 and 33 - like $50 million+. You'd have to make this worth it to him. I see what you're getting at but I still see no point in extending a 28 year old pitcher with four years left on his current deal. Right now it's easy to look at how Q has performed over the last four years and want to extend him but would we still feel the same way as he gets into his thirties and begins regressing like many pitchers do or becomes injured? If either of those things happen we can start saying goodbye to his surplus value and could become difficult to trade. If Q regresses to a #3-5 starter, how will we feel about paying him that money then?Another aspect I'm thinking of is imo, it would be better to keep that extension money and use it towards locking up some of the core players that develop over the next few years. Pitchers regress with age and injuries happen as we have seen with Danks so for a rebuilding team like the Sox that do a good of developing pitching it would be a waste to extend Q. I like Q as much as any Sox fan but no chance I would consider extending him. I cannot think of one good reason to do so at this time.
-
Q is under control , including two option years, through the '20 season and will turn 32 before ST in '21. As much as I like Q, I see no point in trying to extend him beyond the '20 season. Q is 28 now so at this point in time how can we possibly know if we will want to keep him beyond the '20 season? IMHO, it's an unnecessary risk for a team that will likely develop his replacement long before that contract expires. I'm not against keeping Q, just the idea of extending him.

Had a good laugh at the proposed Cardinals trade for Q. I get the logic behind trying to formulate a quantity trade that excludes Reyes but the idea falls apart when Lynn is included. What Cards fans don't realize is if they want to include Lynn, it would cost the Cards even more in a trade since a rebuilding team like the Sox would have no interest in a 29 year old pitcher coming off of TJ surgery and will earn 7.5M in '17. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 30, 2017 -> 06:20 PM) If Moncada flops, we are in big time trouble. Yeah, no kidding! Soxtalk would glow green for the next 10K years from all of the fallout.

QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jan 30, 2017 -> 03:32 PM) As far as I can tell, FLAC is CD quality. Jay-Z and Beyonce are majority owners with minority owners including Jack White, Madonna, Win Butler and his wife (Arcade Fire), and others. Jay-Z bought the company for $60 million and it looked like it was doomed to fail, but now Sprint has bought a third of it for $200 million. I like it and the exclusives are great, but the curation isn't great. Yes, Flac is supposed to be CD quality with a bit depth of over 1,400 which is far better quality than the best MP3 which has a 320 bit depth. Just have to watch out for files claiming to be Flac because they are lossless but we're actually ripped from an MP3 instead of a CD. Bit depth is the best way to know how good the music quality is. Thanks for sharing your experience with Tidal. Haven't tried it and don't know anyone that has so all I've had to go by is the few articles I've read about it. Sounds like a nice deal for the music lovers that are into streaming. If one has to pay for streaming it should be for the best quality possible and not some hacked up MP3 versions.

McGuire and Tellez would be a pretty nice return for Robertson. The Sox likely need to send money along with Robertson but worth it, imo. I think the Nat's might be a better fit for Robertson due to Toronto already having a closer but if the Jays are serious about Robertson then it could force the Nat's to up the ante. Assuming of course the Nat's are still interested in Robertson.
-
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 30, 2017 -> 02:42 PM) I don't think the Nationals offer Fedde + Voth + Severino though That would thin out their farm even more. Plus, what team trades arguably its 5 best pitching prospects in one offseason to the same team? Would be pretty unprecedented Agree and that's why I think if the Nat's were willing to offer those three players for Robertson it would already be a done deal. IMHO, the Nat's might offer two of those three but not all three.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 30, 2017 -> 02:39 PM) http://www.spin.com/2013/06/spotify-pink-f...o-to-streaming/ Seems like it is more of a "we don't want our art thrown into the streaming format" Thanks for that, clears up my curiosity. Seems to fall in line with the mentality of the artists who started Tidal. From what I recall reading a while back, artists like Madonna, Jack White, Metallica etc started tidal because their music was streamed for free on Spotify so the artists want to eliminate that would be middle man in Spotify. I do remember some complaints about the music quality and iirc, is why Tidal has Flac files available for streaming. Eh, I like my way much better than streaming services. I get my music, add it to my collection and play anything I want add free and commercial free. Nothing but the music.

If the Nat's were willing to offer that deal I would think it would already be done. I would take that deal in a heartbeat though. Jones becomes the closer and could potentially bring a really nice haul in July. Everything would line up very well for the Sox.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 30, 2017 -> 08:08 AM) TOOL doesnt allow their music to be a part of Apple Music. Prince(or rather his estate, now) does the same thing. I wish that would change, for both I did not know that , thanks for sharing that tidbit. Wonder what the reasoning is behind it. Doesn't matter to me really since I don't have any Apple products ( not a fan of iTunes) and already have Tool's discography in my collection but it does make me wonder. I do remember some folks complaining a few years back about iTunes and others selling low quality music due to too much dynamic compression that lowers the bit depth of the music tremendously. This is done to fit more music on the server and allow for a larger music catalog for fans, but at the expense of the music's sound quality. So I wonder if that has anything to do with Tool and Prince staying off of iTunes.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 29, 2017 -> 07:26 PM) Bruce Levine today said that he expects the White Sox to gather best offers and trade Quintana for the best one prior to the World Baseball Classic. He's been saying this all offseason though. Wonder if Hahn expects the offers to increase between now and the start of the WBC. If he doesn't it doesn't make much sense to wait until then. Curious to know if teams other than Houston, Pitt and Atlanta have made offers. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) No Martes, No Bregman. LOL, yeah, OK Houston. Looking at it from their (Astrid) perspective, I can see why Musgrove, Martes and Bergman would be untouchable. That rotation has question marks so it's likely they will need Martes and or Pauline at some point and Musgrove just may end becoming their most reliable starter. That said, if they are insistent on keeping those three then they should be looking to trade for a #3 or #4 starter and not a #1/#2. I still like their hitting prospects and Whitley from their pitching depth. For the Astros to make a deal happen it would take 5 or 6 players which I wouldn't be against depending on the players being discussed. The Sox now have nice depth with Giolito, Lopez and Fulmer at Charlotte so I don't mind if Martes isn't available if the Sox can get Whitley instead. Whitley reminds me alot of Hansen and Glasnow, but just 19 years old. Probably doesn't matter anyway since its looking more like Q starts the season with the Sox, which I am fine with. -

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/01/al-n...p;post-id=84006 Provides a touch more clarity. So it sounds like Houston insists that both Musgrove and Martes are off the table. Looking at their pitching staff, I can't say I blame them. Still think they have the pieces to get a deal done as long as the rest of their MiLB players are available. Reed, Tucker, Fisher, Whitley and Stubbs would still be a nice haul, IMHO. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 29, 2017 -> 11:14 AM) I really like the features, i haven't really had any issues with it outside of a few bands not being part of Apple Music(specifically TOOL) That is odd considering Tool has been making music for 20 years. Then again I know nothing about any of the music sources ( apple, Amazon, tidal, spotify, etc) being used today so maybe it's me that is odd.

Kopech's comment cracks me up. I like the humor. More funny is seeing Moncada standing next to Giolito. Gio is a big dude, that's for sue.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 28, 2017 -> 11:22 PM) I think Hansen has the highest ceiling of any Sox pitching prospect other than Kopech. Close , #1 Giolito #2 Kopech #3 Hansen.
-
QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 28, 2017 -> 09:29 PM) Hansen could jump too. Absolutely. Wouldn't be surprised to see him in Birmingham before the season ends.
-
I really hope Sox fans gave Hahn a piece of their minds!
-
Maybe it came down to Benintendi having a better MLB debut. #1 or #2 doesn't matter to me, it's just great to have the caliper of talent that Moncada is. Really looking forward to seeing how Collins plays in his first full season. Fisher and Call should be interesting to keep an eye on as well.

Would definitely want Tellez in a return for Robertson. Plenty of potential to be a masher with high OBP.
