QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) Do you think that the Dodgers would really want an outfielder, with a contract obligation, back in a trade? I doubt that they would take La Roche, and I hate to sell low on Avi. He has tremendous upside, and is young enough to justify exercising some patience with him. He also has an option to be able to go to AAA. I'd rather just keep Melky, as I like his switch hitting bat, especially at DH. Under this scenario, in which they are only obligated to 2 expensive years of Ethier, there might still be money to acquire another left fielder. Any ideas? I do think that Hahn will have to find another home for La Roche. No, I doubt the Dodgers want another outfielder but the Sox really should move one to make space since LaRoche has no value and therefore not tradable. The best we can hope for is LaRoche becomes a useful bench bat/late inning defensive sub at 1B. Nobody is going to pay 13M for a power hitter with no power and batting average that hovers just above .200 and the Pirates have proven that nobody wants LaRoche even with the Sox offering more than half his salary. LaRoche isn't going anywhere. Sorry but that's just how it is. I would prefer to keep Melky as well because as I said I do like his bat but he needs to DH. Thing about keeping Melky is by adding Ethier's salary to the payroll we can forget about any more costly FA signings or trading for players with a significant salary. We have to keep in mind that the Sox are already at last year's payroll so we can only assume they will add so much. If the Sox keep Melky and add Ethier's salary, the payroll would increase to somewhere around 137M. As for Avi. His clueless approach at the plate is beyond frustrating. He still has upside but after last season I think his ceiling has come down quite a bit. If the SOX want to give Avi's bat more time then that's fine, he either needs to be the DH or in LF.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 02:09 PM) If Gordon wants $100 million on a 5 year contract, I hope that the Sox are able to nudge KC to spend enough to get him to stay there, and Hahn moves on to someone else. We have all acknowledged that KC is going to be in a financial bind, with so many of their core players entering free agency. The Sox window appears to be 2 years. Obligating themselves to a 5 year deal at that kind of money, for a guy his age, doesn't seem consistent with the rest of their moves. Could not agree more Lillian. QUOTE (peavy44 @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 02:12 PM) If prices are lower then alot more teams jump in like cards angels orioles. Let em. There's plenty of available outfielders to go around.

Lillian, were most certainly on the same page. As long as Ethier does not cost top prospects, the prospects used to acquire Ethier could be replaced with the three picks in the first two rounds in June's draft. I think I said this in a previous post but one hangup I see is that the Dodgers must be willing to take one of Avi/Melky or LaRoche(ya,right) in the trade. I actually like Melky's bat but one idea could be a trade based around Ethier for Melky. Ethier goes to RF and since the Sox seem like they are willing to give Avi more time to develop they could move him to LF where he shouldn't be as much of a defensive liability. Melky's switch hitting bat could be enticing to the Dodgers as well as Melky's lower salary. As I've said before, I'm just not counting on the Sox signing a FA so I'm just exploring other potential opportunities since the market is flooded with outfielders.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 01:07 PM) Showing you are cold blooded by forcing people to work on a religious holiday and time with family would really gain my respect. Family is weakness. Lol, nice! Screw family and the fact it's a holiday! Just give the fans what they want because, after all it's all about them! I mean, WTF else does Hahn and these free agents have better to do today anyway? Selfish f***s! Crack the whip Hahn!

Take it for what's its worth but according to MLBTR this is the latest comp round picks after the Murphy signing. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/upda...raft-order.html COMPENSATION ROUND (bonus picks given to teams who issued qualifying offers to players who signed elsewhere; picks are allotted in inverse order of 2015 record) 27. White Sox (for Jeff Samardzija signing with the Giants) 28. Nationals (for Jordan Zimmermann signing with the Tigers) 29. Mets (for Daniel Murphy signing with the Nationals) 30. Dodgers (for Zack Greinke signing with the Diamondbacks) 31. Cardinals (for John Lackey signing with the Cubs) 32. Cardinals (for Jason Heyward signing with the Cubs)

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 10:58 AM) 'BlackSox13' date='Dec 25, 2015 I think Gordon's bat could live up to the life of the contract but not necessarily his fielding. Players like him atnage 32 that go balls out on defense have the potential to become future 1B. As long as his bat holds up, I'm fine with that. Jacb May profiles as a LF anyway and he could be ready in the next year or two and during that time its possible Gordon's all out fielding regresses enough to move him to 1B with Abreu going to DH and possibly May going to LF with fresh young legs and great range/glove. May's below average arm would be a good fit for LF anyway. nice way to bring up the farm, yeah, may and even engel, if he continues to develop from ARZ performance are looking good then they have the young cuban player in the wave after that. but the idea of gordon just reminds me of paulie, dunn, laroche and how they digress. i know, i am using a few examples to deter me and my idea. but with the current ownership, they do not like eating a huge contract. even thou they are spending this yr. Opt outs for older players only benefit the player. If the player is good then they opt out for more money but if the player regresses, the player sticks with his contract and becomes an over pay player due to their regression more difficult to move in a trade if the team tries to go a different direction. I really don't see an opt out being a hangup in the Gordon negotiations, not at age 32. Imo, Gordon is looking for the long term security of a five year deal which I believe is one of the hangups. i totally agree the money in the contract, i feel confident is there, the language may be there except for the yrs.... i really think in my thought process, is as you said is the hang up. great post today..... way to go. Just my preference but I would be fine with Gordon on a four year deal despite my not being a fan of signing him , but five years? No thanks, that's where I walk away. There are plenty of other available outfielders out there for the Sox to explore so there's no reason to be fixated on just one of them, especially a 32 year old seeking 5/100M+.

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 11:12 AM) yes and i am one of the biggest proponent of that, trading the prospects on the farm for the right player. but on a side note, KW did that and believe in it.... what make us different than what he did??? for me, the difference is in the prospects. as much as anderson and fulmer is untouchable, adams and zangari is in that boat. i see great upside in adams and in azngari. i just don't know how or what i read about him. but he kinds of remind me of a great sox htter. i just leave it at that. adams i can see his potential as being on the same or a tiny bit better upside than rodon. but again this is me and maybe my wishful thinking. adams ..... his bulldog mentality is what i like from the time before the draft. Unless the right trade comes along, I'd prefer to keep Anderson to eventually take over at SS and Fulmer to eventually take over for Danks. As for Adams, I think he's one of the pitchers that could be dealt for hitting depth and with all do respect to you and Adams, I don't think Adams upside is even close to Rodon's, Rodon is a special/unique kind of talent. I'm also a pretty big fan of Guerrero but I would trade him in a heartbeat for the right youthful bat. As fans we have to accept that teams aren't going to give up quality hitting talent without getting quality pitching talent in return and especially if we insist on keeping a guy like Fulmer whom we are depending to replace Danks when he becomes a FA after the '16 season. After Fulmer, the Sox best pitching assets are Adams and Guerrero and those are the kids teams will target as far as young pitching goes. Gotta give to get. One thing I've learned about baseball through the years is to never become attached to players, it alleviates the heartbreak if they are eventually traded to fill holes elsewhere. I really hope the Sox can work out a trade or two without giving up any of Anderson/Fulmer/Zangari/Zavala, though I remain open minded if the trade fits what the Sox are seeking. Outside of them everyone else is fair game in a trade, IMHO.

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 10:43 AM) i am wondering by what blacksox13 posted, if the sox do not get any of the elite fa of'ers, depending on the cost, who are good options, or should the sox explore a trade. in ref to trade, does the sox have assets to do a trade, knowing that anderson and adams and fulmer and even corey zangari will be untouchable. With the Sox trying to build a young core while attempting to contend. I would look at young players like Inciarte, Tucker and Marisnick. For the right player, I would be willing to trade anyone not named Anderson, Fulmer, Zangari, Zavala, but even then i would be willing to trade any of them but onky for the right bat. Trading from the depth of young pitching for young hitting makes sense for a team like the Sox. Many have said in the past that the Sox should keep drafting/developing pitching since they can be tradied for hitting later. Well, IMHO, its later and the time has come to balance out the team and farm with respect to pitching and hitting. Trading young minor league pitchers for young minor league hitters is a solid idea too. Trades don't always have to be about immediately helping the parent club. Even trading different positional talent should be explored.

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 10:35 AM) excellent thought process. way to go. the 5 yr or 4 yrs. no matter, it is a financial part of this. an extra yr or two, even sitting on the bench, collecting 20 mil per, when his usefulness is in the first 2 yrs, maybe 3 yrs. what bugs me is the ability of opt out of the contract, why can't the org have the same in after a number of yrs. what is good of one should be good for the other. I think Gordon's bat could live up to the life of the contract but not necessarily his fielding. Players like him atnage 32 that go balls out on defense have the potential to become future 1B. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 10:11 AM) 'BlackSox13' date='Dec 25, 2015 The Mets are in a real financial bind since the owners have so much debt so they aren't in a position to ask for the world for Granderson. I really think Granderson can be had for a reasonable price. Something like Avi and a cost controlled bullpen arm might be enough. i knew that they were in trouble a couple of yrs ago, the old gm hinted at it esp with colon contract, what 2 yrs ago....but i do not think they will sell the farm for nothing, even thou avi is not a nobody, i think they will want a lion share of every trade..... but who is right and who is wrong, only time will tell on that. Tucker/Marisnick: they are gambled but they are also just 25/24 years old so there's still plenty of upside. They are also cheap and come with hears of control while fits for the core group Hahn is building. I would rather gamble on youth than a proven veteran that will regress with age at some point. That POV is why I would be willing to part with quality prospects for a guy like Inciarte. by that definition, isn't Avi should be considered the same way??? but i can't dispute your POV, i still like that you are looking, i just don't see it with Hou. maybe another Kemp: nice bat but horrible legs and glove on the field and was actually worse than Avi defensively in '15. No reason to trade for Kemp unless he becomes the DH or learns first base which means SD would have to take LaRoche in any deal for Kemp. I really like Kemp's bat and would like to have it in the middle of the Sox lineup, just not his defense on the field. oh i know, you are not saying nothing i didn't take into consideration. me and my crazy ideas, i still like him as a DH. he has a great glove for that position. Grandy: due to his age and salary, he isn't worth the world and if the Mets asked for the world they would find Grandy still playing RF for the Mets. Grandy is not the kind of player any team will over pay for with so many outfielder options on the current market. Tucker/Marisnick: both are better defensively than Avi, especially Marisnick. Tucker has shown he can hit for power in the big leagues while Marisnick has shown elite defense with potential for more power, non of which Avi has yet to prove. At this point Avi does not possess the same talent potential as either of Marisnick/Tucker. That said, I admit the Sox are probably not a match for Tucker in a trade because I think Tucker has enough value to bring back a solid return for Houston but I think something could be worked out for Marisnick between the Sox and Astros.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 09:52 AM) Unless he wanted a flexible opt-out to not be locked into a long-term relationship with an organization he was uncertain about... For Gordon, it's just as much about finding a comfortable fit with the right team and environment. We all were sold this idea Shark would be willing to sign a long-term deal, and it couldn't have turned out to be any more the opposite or both sides. Likewise, Heyward cost the Cardinals a ton in talent and he was content to jump ship from one of the best organizations in baseball after just a year, so that has to be part of the hesitation...along with the belief KC can come up with 4 years and $70 million at the last minute when the rubber hits the road on decision day in the next couple of weeks. I don't think no trade is quite so important...unless he really wants to keep his family close to Omaha. If Gordon is unsure about an organization then what's the point in him insisting on five years? Makes no sense. As for Shark. The Sox FO were sold on the possibility of extending him but not me. Shark was very consistent with his insistence on going to FA. Anyone who though otherwise, well shame on them for not believe what Shark had been saying for nearly two years. Just my shot in the dark opinion but I'm guessing the two most important things to Gordon are the fifth year and a full NTC. An opt out for a 32 year makes no sense.

The Mets are in a real financial bind since the owners have so much debt so they aren't in a position to ask for the world for Granderson. I really think Granderson can be had for a reasonable price. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 09:24 AM) Why would Haywards opt outs slow down signings? Opt outs have been part of the landscape for almost 20 years, and while it would seem to favor the player, more often that not, even if it wasn't used as one, it has been a great escape opportunity for the team. That is how it worked out with Albert Belle. I am sure the Yankees with hindsight would have let ARod and Captain Cheeseburger walk after they opted out. Sure it protects the player in case of drop of production in a way. But with these players, you are giving them the long term deal regardless. Having 3 nice seasons and then having them walk when they are in their 30s and looking for even more money and longer guarantee is doing the team a favor. Most of these huge contracts, teams are fully aware they most likely will be paying a lot of money for very little at the end. Cano, Pujols, even a guy like Greinke. Why a highly anticipated opt out clause to Jason Heyward would make a market slow makes no sense. And if Cespedes wanted an opt out, why a team would consider it weird or to not be more than willing to include one makes no sense. I'm having a difficult time buying into the opt out nonsense myself with reference to Gordon. The guy is 32 and most players that age are looking for long term security due to they know they are likely to regress to some degree with age. Upton would make sense as an opt out candidate and to a lesser extent maybe Cespedes but Gordon? Nah, I don't buy if. My guess would be that the potential hangup is Gordon seeking a full no trade Claus in his next contract and also maybe the Sox only willing to go four year while Gordon seeks five.

Way too much is being taken from a Sox fan that was just expressing his thoughts. Nelson never said anything in reference to inside sources or anything like that, he just expressed what he thought and if people read more into it then shame on them. Given that it's an extended holiday weekend, I'd guess there won't be much activity until Monday so please keep your knickers on Sox fans, its cold outside after all. And no, I don't have any inside sources nor spidy senses to back that up, just an un-educated guess.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 08:51 PM) LOL It's a fantasy trade just like any fantasy trade . It goes without saying that I assume both teams are willing to do it. No sense in proposing it otherwise, I like your ideas I just don't like hanging onto LaRoche. Everybody's in happy talk mood now hoping praying wishing LaRoche has it in him to bounce back.I am one of the most optimistic guys here but guys retire after a season like LaRoche just had at his age. Why on earth would I want his total suckitude again ? A bounce back ? To what .220/ 300. /420 ? Still sucks and his bat isn't getting any faster. Oh yea right he had an injury which never required a stay on the DL . Garbage excuses. Don't need him at DH when we still have Melky, Avi and Abreu and won't need him even more if we sign Gordon. I also never said or even assumed Garza would be better for the Sox . I actually think it's ugly to even think about . Danks is the better pitcher but it's a 5th starter who knows who's going to be better in 2016. The whole reason why I did all that math and proposed the whole thing is because LaRoche is a huge freakin' anchor messing up the 25 man roster , taking up valuable space. He should do us all a favor and retire. I thought the trade would appeal to the Brewers because they make $3.25M in the proposed trade, get an innings eater who might be the better pitcher than Garza , and they only have to wait until after 2016 to be rid of both of them instead of after 2017 to be rid of Garza. On the Sox side they free up one position player roster spot on the 25 which should mean a lot since they seem to be going for it again and it spreads out the money in crap contracts from 1 year to 2 years. I think out of all the posters I read you are the guy who thinks the most like me so I hope I didn't offend you with anything I said. Merry Christmas ! I hear ya and its all good here, no offense was ever taken, were just expressing different points of view my man. We're all arm-chair GM's around these parts. Maybe Judge Smails would be interested in using LaRoche on The Flying Wasp. Ahoy Polloi! "Hey, you scratched my anchor! " Edit: almost forgot. Merry Christmas to you CaliSox!

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 10:25 PM) this is excellent and very informative. well put together. the main problem I see is this, the sox do not have the assets to make it work. but you really got a point. Thanks man. You're probably right. CarGo likely would cost more than what the Sox would be willing to give but with so many outfielders options available, I still have hope that some could be worked out. Colorado has too many left handed hitting outfielders and are said to be looking for a right handed bat. I'm wondering if Avi/Beck/Danish or Guerrero would be enough. I'm thinking Colorado would want one of Adams or Guerrero for sure but not sure if they would have interest in Beck or Avi, probably not. I think Gardner is much more plausible of an idea. Other ideas that I think we're mentioned in another thread are Marisnick or Tucker from Houston. Tucker would give the Sox the left handed bat with pop they seek while Marisnick would provide elite defense although his bat leaves something to be desired. At least Marisnick provides defense and speed unlike Avi. I also wonder about Granderson's availability. The Mets owners apparently have alot of debt so they might be willing to trade Granderson. That's about all I can come up with for now. Kemp has a nice bat but his defense fallen off pretty bad and should be looked at as a DH.
-
One of the things I like about CarGo is the shorter commitment tomgo with his left handed power. I would rather bank on CarGo who is 30 to hold up for the next two year as opposed to Gordon at age 32 for the next 5 years. When CarGo becomes a FA he will surely net the Sox a comp pick and CarGo buys the Sox time to develop May/Engel/Hawkins or whichever is not used in a trade for CarGo. Inciarte: that's the player I desire most in a trade. Elite defense, speed, LHB with a little pop, hits for a good average and comes with five years of control. Yep, I'd take that. Fits the "core" group to a T that Hahn speaks about. However, I admit he would be costly to acquire and I probably don't want to know what Atlanta's asking price would be. Still, one can dream right? Gardner: I think he would hold up just fine despite him slowing with age. He does hit with a little more pop which would help and combine that with what speed he has he could be a solid #2 hitter for the Sox or hit in the middle like 5th or 6th to help restart the lineup after Abreu or Frazier goes yard. Something like #3 Abreu #4Frazier #5 Gardner #6 Lawrie.

That's less than what I would have thought. Sounds like a nice deal for the Nat's.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 07:15 PM) CarGo and Ethier are those two interesting case studies for how much return they can get now compared to being pure salary dumps a year ago. Ethier I believe has the longer deal, so wouldn't cost as much...and is more of a complimentary player for LA. CarGo, otoh, is the remaining franchise player (most identifiable) for the Rockies, and rebounded significantly...so they will definitely ask for Fulmer or Adams....and it's unsure whether Adams alone gets it done now. Another factor is he's a lot more expensive than Frazier...but we don't unfortunately have the equivalent of another Montas/Micah/Trayce package we're willing to deal. Maybe Hawkins and Adams, that feels like their ask in terms of selling it to the fanbase. Agree with what you say here. I think Ethier would be the less costly option in a trade. One thing I didn't consider in my OP was the fact that left handed RF power hitters are few and far between on this year's market which will add even more surplus value to CarGo. It's still possible CarGo could be had at a reasonable price due to the overall abundance of outfielders available but not as cheap as Ethier. With the speculated cost of Upton/Cespedes/Gordon, I think attempting another trade could be a better idea for the Sox and more of a possibility than some may think despite the lack of depth in the upper minors. Imo, Ethier can be had without costing Fulmer or Anderson but I could be wrong. I think for a deal to work with LA, they must be willing to take a Sox outfielder not named Eaton in return as part of the trade. Problem is that the Dodgers have enough outfielders as is. Here's a look at the balance of Ethier's contract. I don't consider this bad at all to be honest. 2016 34 Los Angeles Dodgers $18,000,000 2017 35 Los Angeles Dodgers $17,500,000 2018 36 Los Angeles Dodgers *$17,500,000 $17.5M Vesting Option, $2.5M Buyout Another alternative would be to see what the Yanks want for Gardner. Problem is he's really never played RF and should probably stay in LF but he is a much cheaper alternative to signing a FA which could leave some money to be spent elsewhere or mid-season if the Sox are legit contenders. Here's Gardner's contract... 2016 32 New York Yankees $13,500,000 2017 33 New York Yankees $12,500,000 2018 34 New York Yankees $11,500,000 2019 35 New York Yankees *$12,500,000 $12.5M Team Option, $2M Buyout Not sure what the Yanks would want in return though they are reportedly seeking a RH starting pitcher. It does seem as though they are looking to lower their payroll so maybe Gardner can be had for something like Beck/Avi? Not sure to be honest. I'm just entertaining alternatives to the Sox OF search. I'm not completely sold that the Sox are going to sign a FA and especially one with a comp pick. There's so many conflicting rumors going on I kind of think the Sox end up doing something we may not see coming. Hahn said he many irons in the fire and I do believe that.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 06:13 PM) Ya this is the conundrum I'm trying to figure out. Seems like they are trying to replace avi cause he's not living up to expectations. Getting gordon doesn't fix that. It upgrades leftfield but now leave Melky without a spot. He hasn't played RF in a couple years. If Laroche is traded then Melky cam go to DH but that still leaves avi in right. Upton hasn't played significant time in rf since 2012. Cespedes I can't find him having played other position then CF and LF. I think he could maybe handle RF ok. So if the are truly on gordon I don't know what they are going to do. Only other thought is getting gordon, then many trying to trade for cargo. Could use Laroche, avi and spects to get cargo then play gordon in left with Melky going to dh. Not fully understanding everything. If the Sox sign one of the big three its likely they play LF, Melky goes to DH, LaRoche becomes a bench bat and we see some sort of platoon with Avi/Shuck in RF. Far from an optimal scenario, IMHO. Colorado has no reason to be interested in LaRoche. CarGo is now worth his contract thanks to Heyward and once the big three sign he will have surplus value so CarGo is no longer a salary dump so trying to use LaRoche in a trade is a moot point to be honest. Colorado will get decent players in a trade for CarGo. Depending on what CarGo will cost he could be a better option than signing a player to a huge FA contract. CarGo would solve the RF problem, provides a left handed middle of the order power bat, is cheaper than the free agents and comes with two years of control like Frazier/Lawrie. Sure it would cost the Sox minor league depth but that depth could be replaced with the Sox having three picks in the first two rounds in June's draft which is supposed to have a good amount of talent. Again, this all depends on Colorado's trade demand's which at this point only Colorado knows those demands. With the plethora of outfield talent available in FA and the trade market, I'm think Colorado's demands should not be too high, or at least I hope not but ya never know. QUOTE (peavy44 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 06:17 PM) Do we sign Parra for RF. The Sox are already at their '15 payroll. It's one thing to hope they scrounge up the money for one FA but two ain't happening.

QUOTE (peavy44 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 05:50 PM) whats the point of getting him then whos plays RF for us Cespedes in LF, Melky to DH and Avi/Shuck in RF. One of the problems I have with signing any of Upton/Cespedes/Gordon is they are all left Fielders and their best defense played is LF. All are upgrades over Melky in LF but none help the RF which is also a problem. Unless the Sox put Shuck in RF more often since he does play solid RF defense.
