Come on EJ! Danks and Q have set the tone for pitching so far in this series so please continue that. Hopefully the offense takes advantage of a scuffling Cueto. Sox managed 4ER against Cueto earlier this year so hopefully everything has lined up for a series sweep in KC. GO SOX!

Another well pitched game with the offense giving plenty of run support. I'm enjoying this for however long it lasts.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Sep 6, 2015 -> 09:03 AM) Well if you want more info, there's no way on earth that the White Sox are gonna offer John Danks a raise on what has been one of the worst contracts in baseball, all because he's had a very slightly better year than last, and ranks about 100th of the 120 pitchers to throw over 100 innings, using the best peripherals. Danks has yet to pitch the 2016 season and you do not work in the Sox FO so you know this how? Danks has improved while Samardzija has regressed and yet Samardzija likely receives a QO at season's end. All I'm saying is if Danks continues to improve he will get a QO after the 2016 season. By then he will be 31, a FA and likey seeking a 3-4 year deal like any other FA pitcher at that age would seek because they want the security of a long term contract (3-4 years). There's little danger that Danks would actually accept the QO. Now, if Danks regresses in 2016, the Sox simply walk away when his current contract expires. Regardless, imo, 2016 will be Danks last season in a Sox uniform no matter how he pitches.

Mike Olt dfa'd by Cubs, claimed by White Sox

Dick, on a side note. Dig the new avatar but I have to ask why, after so long, did you retire Geddy? You really threw me off the first time I saw the new avatar under your name. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 04:55 PM) Saladino has a .601 OPS which is lower than Olt's last season. I don't mind Saladino and expect his bat to improve, but one more option isn't going to hurt his development. He might not even be a 3B next spring. 2 years ago Olt was a top 25 prospect. He isn't a typical waiver claim other than he probably flames out, but maybe he pulls a JD Martinez Come on Dick, .3 points lower. I would rather give Davidson a shot and imo, he is not ready either. At least Davidson has shown vast improvement defensively. To me, Olt is a 27 year old version of Davidson. Obviously, as a SOX fan I hope I am wrong on this but I just don't see the point in the claim. There's not much time left in the season for Olt to prove much. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 04:23 PM) At one time, he was considered one of the top prospects in baseball. Chances are he will be nothing, but the Sox have no roster crunch, bring him in, give him a couple ABs, he supposedly changed some things up after this injury, see what he has, maybe see how the offseason treats him. If you wind up waiving him, you lose nothing. Unless the Sox can't afford the $85k this move will cost, it makes no sense NOT to make. He is better than Matt Davidson. He is a 27 year version of Davidson. Low BA, high K-rate etc. While the SOX may have nothing to lose, other players do and would rather see Saladino continue to get the reps because Saladino has at least shown the ability to hit a little in the majors and more importantly play good 3B defense, neither of which Olt has done at the major league level. -

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 04:20 PM) You are absolutely correct. In 6 games, and 15 at-bats, Olt's OPS is indeed .521. He OPS'd .823 in the minors for about 1/2 the season, missing time due to a broken wrist. Give him some time, and see if he can hit. Again, the White Sox have nothing at all to lose. I think you're missing the point which is that Olt has proven he cannot hit major league pitching. His numbers last year for the cubs prove that and please don't bring up a 27 year olds numbers in the minors because at that age, they are irrelevant and show that Olt is in fact a 4A player and nothing more. Yes, Olt has power potential but so does Davidson whom was not called up due to poor hitting and a high K rate. Olt is literally the same as Davidson but at least Davidson is only 24 whereas Olt is 27. Don't get me wrong, I was happy to see Gillaspie go and by no means do I want Gillaspie back in a Sox uni but claiming a player that is worse than one that was traded away due to a lack of production makes no sense at all. -

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 03:55 PM) What?! Conor Gillaspie's OPS was .627 this year. That's absolutely terrible no matter which way you slice it. Alexei is very likely out of the picture next year, so Saladino may shift over to SS, or if Sanchez plays SS, then Saladino can play 2B. Olt, assuming he's healthy, gives them a more powerful option at 3B. If Olt isn't cutting it at the major league level, then Matt Davidson can take a break from whiffing in Charlotte for a bit, or you just DFA Olt. The White Sox have nothing to lose. And Olt's OPS is .521 this year. Your point is? Olt: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oltmi01.shtml No matter how you slice it, this move makes zero sense and the Sox have nothing to gain by giving a 4A player some playing time. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 02:13 PM) yeah this is an excellent thread and really nice info being shared. Zangari and really throwing me... here are rhetorical questions. 1. where was Zangari last yr.... meaning his development. 2. if he is doing this now, against this level of competition, can anyone not feel excited ... meaning the same excitement of a Rodon, Anderson etc.... 3. any prediction of how more yrs of production would it take to really be talked about for the majors. I dare not take a stab at predictions with recently drafted players. I'm trying not to look too far ahead and just watch them develop one level at a time. Both kids are certainly interesting to follow though. The killer Z's!

Uhg, I do not understand this in the least bit. If Olt gets playing time then Saladino loses playing time at 3B. Not a fan of this claim at all. Cannot believe I'm going to say this but I would rather have Gillaspie back in a Sox uni. At least Gillaspie could hit a little at the major league level. -
It's exciting to finally see some hitters developing. Both Zangari and Zavala have been impressive in their own right. Zavala hitting as a catcher and Zangari hitting as an 18 year 1B fresh out of HS. I'm really looking forward to watching them develop in the years to come. Nice thread oldsox! Anyone know how Zavala's catching skills look? I googled him but came up empty.

Got to give Danks credit here, he pitched a hell of a game last night. Seeing as how its likely the Sox and Shark bait part ways, the Sox are going to need Danks next year. More credit to Danks... http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/danksjo01.shtml He has improved each year since his surgery and seeing as how Danks is likely pitching for the Sox next year, he could be worth a comp pick at the end of the 2016 season. I know that's a bit far ahead, just trying to see a potential bright spot going forward after another bad season this year. Well done Danks and Sox offense.

I certainly like the idea of Price and not long ago I thought it would be a great idea. Then I looked at the contract Lester got last year and realized there's no chance. Lester: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...shtml#contracts Does anyone really believe the Sox are the kind of team that will spend 1/5 of its payroll on one player? Sorry, not happening.

Shark baits situation could become very interesting. If he really does not want to return to the south side and rejects the QO, his comp pick attachment plus the wealth of pitching combined with his horrible season could make him a candidate to go un-signed until after the 2016 draft. Not a likely option at this point but it could happen.
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 4, 2015 -> 07:26 AM) Wasn't he an ex-Sox minor leaguer? Yes he is. Pretty sure he was traded for Quentin.
-
QUOTE (glangon @ Sep 4, 2015 -> 07:29 AM) $14 million odd over one year says that he'll cope. Last years QO was 15.3M so this year should hit or exceed 16M.
-
QUOTE (glangon @ Sep 4, 2015 -> 07:11 AM) There is a worse scenario than that. If we offer Shark the Qualifying Offer and he accepts. Think about it, he is currently the worst pitcher in baseball (according to number of earned runs given up). He has given up more earned runs (200) than any other pitcher in all of baseball. Who in their right mind would give up a compensation pick and £10 million a year for the worst pitcher in baseball. The Shark is not stupid. By accepting the Qualifying Offer, he gives himself another year in the shop window to show what he can do and encourage teams to overpay for him. The market for starting pitchers is extensive this off-season and the Shark knows, he's not going to get anything near what he thinks he is worth, especially when you can get Price, Cueto or Kazmir without giving up a comp pick. The Sox will offer him a QO and I would not be surprised if he accepts it and we are lumbered with him for another year. That would be a LOSE / LOSE QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 4, 2015 -> 07:24 AM) If he dislikes cooper this much, it is highly doubtful that he accepts KyYIE123 sums up where I'm coming from. Cooper + Shark baits comments before the deadline + Shark being pissed after the deadline about not being traded = Shark bait rejecting the QO. Well, at least that's what I'm hoping for.
