With Toronto trading for Tulo they are obviously going for it as contenders as long as the Sox see their self as contenders there will be no dealing with Toronto. Now if the Sox are sellers, that's a different story. Things are becoming very interesting.

Avi, intentionally walked?

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 04:34 PM) Awe heck, I'll toss my name into the crazy hat. Danks/Duke/Micah Johnson to LAD for Andre Ethier/ Austin Barnes. Uhh, I'd like to cancel that idea, MMMKay.

LaRoche to sit out first two BOS games

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 06:11 PM) I would be willing to send over a lower level prospect or some money along with LaRoche Money is probably what Pitt was after and the Sox not willing to give up the amount. I don't blame Pitt for wanting money since LaRoche is not worth it but I would be willing to pay in an effort to make a trade happen. -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 05:43 PM) Damn I thought it was 15 for some reason...I guess I'd still prefer him for a year. Or they find a taker for Alvarez and we give them LaRoche. Edit: he's actually arbitration eligible next season so you could always nontender him if you didn't want him. I would be fine with that. I'm thinking Pitt wants more from the Sox than just LaRoche and that's why nothing happened? -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 05:19 PM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/07/cole...ice-giants.html In this thread, Stark says Pirates have asked the Sox about LaRoche but since they haven't been able to move Alvarez, no move is likely to happen. I'd take 2 months of Alvarez for 1 year and 2 months of LaRoche. So would I. Fwiw, Alvarez is not a FA until after the 2016 season. I am curious about this though. Alvarez is hitting better than LaRoche which is not saying alot. It must be LaRoche's defense that interest the Pirates since Alvarez is a hack. -
Finally. A more productive DH!

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 08:34 AM) And just like Buehrle, it's a majorly back loaded contract. Shields only gets $10 mil this season, but that jumps to $21 million per year for 2016-2018. That should limit their trade market unless they throw in major cash. He's also from the SD area, which is a double nut punch if they do trade him. Yep, Shields is going to be a very hard sell. Imo, Shields' contract sheds a little light as to what Samardzija could be looking for in his next contract. Not necessarily back loaded but the annual salary (21M) and years (5). I would not touch that.

I was thinking about the buying and selling idea yesterday since the team is close enough for a push. The best thing I'm able to come up with is an exchange of bad contracts with the Dodgers. Try to package Danks/Duke for Andre Either. Dodgers get a reliever in Duke and a starter that should perform better in the NLW while the Sox improve the RF defense and add a nice left handed bat to the lineup. Avi platoons DH with LaRoche, plus Avi can rotate into LF/RF to keep legs fresh for the stretch run. This allows the Sox to keep Samardzija to help make that late season push and hope for the best. It's just an idea and I have no clue if the Dodgers or Sox would be interested in such a trade.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 12:11 AM) So about a month or so after signing Shields to that ridiculous contract, the Pods want to get rid of him. Baseball is the best/worst sport, run by idiots. Shortly after signing Shark this offseason, the team that does it will be trying to get rid of him, certainly by midseason. Where is the common sense??? NOBODY is worth this kind of money. Verlander?? LOL, nuff said. The Padres appear to be doing to Shields the same thing the Marlins did to Buehrle. Buehrle was traded in his first season under his new contract before his contract escalated and now Shields is on the trade block. I can see why players try and get No Trades in their contracts. Shields was due to regress and I'm so glad the SOX did not go after him last off season. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 01:18 AM) I think Samardzija gets something like 5 years $105 million. I would not be in the least bit surprised. That contract for a pitcher that turns 31 this winter does not sound like a smart investment and especially for a team with other holes to fill. The idea would make more sense if not for Danks salary which does not come off the books until after the 2016 season is over. Contender or not, I still hope the Sox trade Samardzija. Would prefer to trade Danks but, yeah....

QUOTE (BigFinn @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 10:27 PM) At $7 million per WAR, and a three year history of 2.9, 2.9, and 4.2 WAR prior to this year's current 2.5, you could figure 3.5 x $7.0 million or $24.5 million per year asking price. Asking for $24-25 million per year and getting it are two different things. But he doesn't have the mileage on his pitching arm that Shields or Price or other front-of-the-rotation starters have. Thanks for the numbers. If Samardzija continues to pitch well for the remainder of 2015, I think Samardzija could use Shields 21M per year as a starting point. Samardzija will get a little help after Price/Cueto sign and raise the cost on starting pitching which would be a smart move by Samardzija. I just cannot see the Sox spending big money on one pitcher when the team has other holes to fill.
-
Serious question about Samardzija's impending free agency. I was just looking at James Shields' contract which pays him 21M per season covering the 2016/17/18 seasons and a 19 team option of 16M. Shields numbers have gone down despite switching to the NL in a pitchers park , pitching in a division with pitchers parks. Samardzija is about three years younger so just how much is he going to ask for?
-
Agreed, zero % chance.

That really is a nice haul for Cinci and I'm glad those arms are now in Cinci's ML system.

LaHat-trick! Is anyone really surprised?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 11:05 AM) Houston's going to wait until the last second and see if the sticker prices come down or another veteran surprisingly becomes available, but for them to trade a top 3-5 minor league right now would be pretty shocking. I'm not so sure about Houston waiting. If Houston waits too long they will lose another start from the pitcher they trade for plus Houston already showed they aren't waiting around when they traded for Kazmir. Luhnow's comments after the trade back that up. Then there's the tie for first place they are in with the Angels which makes them even more eager.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 10:49 AM) That's good for us and Shark trade. TOR will be coming for him Yes it is. Toronto, LAD and possibly Houston bidding on Samardzija can only help the Sox return on a trade.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 10:17 AM) I've said that maybe Hahn is trying to make a trade that would not signify surrender of the season perhaps by getting someone that could be put in the lineup fairly soon. You give up Shark and maybe a RP, Adam LaRoche , Avisail Garcia ,whoever the Sox think they can trade and not miss a beat if all goes well Eric Johnson replaces Samardzija, the bullpen has Jones coming back, Albers ready to take a larger roll, Carroll could pitch long relief which he's shown he can do fairly well . Either get back a youngster ready to play now (what position I have no idea ) or a young vet he can plug into the DH role or catcher . OR maybe an OF like Dalton Pompey a LH OF like Ethier only not as costly, then switch Avi to DH or even Micah Johnson . This is along the lines of what I was thinking when I posted a proposed trade in the trade winds forum of Samardzija/ Danks/Putnam for Barnes/ Ethier/ low A ball pitcher. Instead of paying Samardzija roughly 18M+ per year for the next five years, upgrade RF offensively and defensively with Ethier for the next two or three years ( 2018 vesting option). Avi can rotate in to play LF, RF and platoon DH with LaRoche.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 09:21 AM) I think Shark goes to Blue Jays so that package doesn't work. I would assume Dank's no trade blocks Toronto. The package doesn't work because the package is based on a trade with the Dodgers who are looking for two starting pitchers and looking to trade one of their many outfielders. Another thing is, who said anything about Danks going to Toronto? Was not me.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 12:46 AM) Then I don't see them making that trade. Why trade for something that's just going to bolster your minor leagues when you can make him a qualifying offer and get a compensatory pick, someone who has a greater chance of contributing to the ML team. If it's Toronto, I go after Pentecost What matters is the actual value of the player and not their organizational rating. For instance, the Sox #10 is Nolan Sanburn and the Dodgers #10 is Austin Barnes. I don't think too many people would argue against Barnes being more valuable than Sanburn. I have no problem taking the comp pick if the Sox do not get a good offer but bare in mind comp picks are years away from helping the ML club if they develop. Imo, the Sox will get at least one player that has more value than a comp pick. Pentecost has not played yet this year due his having a second surgery on his throwing shoulder. I'm hoping the Sox can manage a Samardzija for Barnes trade somehow.

Was just reading an article on the Barons site and it said Montas is the starter in Sunday's game. They did not explain why Montas was bumped back to Sunday though. So Montas is still a Baron.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 25, 2015 -> 10:30 PM) a very interesting thought there. with how sanchez been hitting since the asg and he provides very good defense..... i can see micah as an extra valuable asset. Exactly. The Dodgers could have interest in Micah since Kendrick is a FA after the playoffs end. I'm sure the Sox would have interest in Barnes.
