QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 10:09 PM) Cubs take OF Donnie Dewees with their 2nd pick. Oh that sucks. I remember LDF talking highly about Dewees. -
2015 MLB Draft Thread - Discussion - DAY ONE

Surprised to see Matuella still on the board 37 picks into the draft. Thought he was first rounder? -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 07:40 PM) But... 1. That was still an idiotic move, and more importantly 2. Jackson had 1.5 years before FA at the time and that was on the last collective bargaining agreement so that even if he were only a "Type B" free agent he would have earned draft pick compensation whereas Samardzija will bring none. 1- dear god yes it was! 2- that's the concern I have with Samardzija. No compensation at all for Samardzija would turn that trade from a bust to a disaster.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 07:35 PM) Why do I feel like I've seen a GM debate what to give up for a player with an ERA of 5 in the last couple years? Its groundhog day! The Sox took their wisdom from the Swisher trade and married it with their wisdom of the Jackson to AZ trade and thus we have Samardzija.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 05:47 PM) That's why it'd be nice to right a wrong and get 2-3 prospects back for him ... now. Trade him to some contender that needs a starter. Would the Twins take him? The Royals? I want Colon. If you were a GM looking for a starter, what prospects would you give up for a three month rental and a 4.93 ERA? I'm sorry but I just do not see the value in Samardzija. At this point, all he's good for is eating innings, otherwise he's pitching like Danks. QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 07:06 PM) Shark may have loads of talent but so far this season he has not demonstrated this talent well enough to enthuse potential trade partners. we are stuck with him. This sums it up.

Was not the guy I had picked but I'm not complaining. Happy to call Fulmer a member of the White Sox organization. I am laughing at the idea of Sale, Rodon and Fulmer in the same rotation a year or two from now and the amount of K's those three will generate. Have mercy! -

I'm going to take a stab at the top 8. 1- Arizona- Swanson 2- Houston- Benintendi 3- Colorado- Rodgers 4- Texas- Tate 5- Houston- Bregman 6- Twinkies- Stephenson 7- Boston- Fulmer 8- White Sox- Jay Go ahead, cut me with your laughter. -
QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 11:32 AM) would you have had the same opinion if the sox, Shark would have been doing better??? Honestly, I wanted nothing to do with Samardzija even before the trade so,yes, I would have the same opinion. I didn't like giving up prospects for a one year of a pitcher that has consistently said he will test the FA market after the 2015 season. Would have preferred those prospects used on a pitcher that came with more years of control. In fact, I remember saying that when the thread was made last November. Another thing I didn't like was the idea of a multi year contract to a pitcher that will be 31 by the start of ST 2016. To me, none of it added up to being the right move.

Thank you Chisoxfn.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 10:21 AM) next yr, the sox still needs another arm, who will that be? EJ, Drabek, Noesi, or who??? the sox already offered their priced which was paid already. i believe this is not the real Shark that the fans are seeing. keeping him for around 15 mil, and helps fill a spot in the rotation, i am looking at that, the big picture. re no freaking way should the sox offer him the extension. With the way Samardzija has pitched, I would have no problem with giving Drabek, Beck or Johnson a shot next year and spend the 16M elsewhere. There are still holes at 3B, C and 2B that money could help with. Don't get me wrong, I would rather the Sox had better choices than Samardzija, Beck, Drabek and Johnson but that's what they have for now. The Sox really need to learn not to trade with Oakland.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 09:35 AM) there is nothing that can be done with Danks and his contract. while it was a contract well deserved. it the weight of that contract can not be helped for another yr. so should they stop any improvement to the team b/c of this contract? Ive come to accept Danks and his contract will be around for one more season but why repeat with Samardzija? Are the Sox a better team with him now? How would the Sox be any better with him next year? Samardzija is 30 years old, in the last year of his contract, will become a FA at seasons end and has an ERA of 4.93. For me, these are signs that the Sox should NOT keep Samardzija around Can you imagine the b****ing that would be going on if the Sox had extended Samardzija earlier this year and is now pitching like s***?
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 08:33 AM) I'd GLADLY gamble 1/15 on Samardzija next year at this point. I guess we disagree. Both Danks and Samardzija would cost 30M+ next season and both have ERA's hovering around 5 at the moment, no thanks.
-
QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 07:29 PM) In a perfect world, who would you want the Sox to get in the draft at #8? For me, it's Tyler Jay easily. I'm on that train with you. Can't decide on what I prefer if Jay is not available. My mind kinda changes, lol.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 08:21 PM) That is a best case scenario unless he is awful the entire year. If that is the case, they won't offer anyway. Just to clarify. That's what I'm basing my question on. If Samardzija continues to pitch as he has, he will not be worth the QO money and could accept the offer which would likely tip 16M. The Sox are already over paying one pitcher close to 16M for a 5ERA. Do the Sox really need two? There's plenty of time for Samardzija to turn it around but what concerns me is there really are no signs of him turning it around. The only thing he's got going right now is he can chew up some innings.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 07:20 PM) No chance. He's going to be what 31 years old? He'll at least get like 5 years and 80 million or so even though he's shooting for a lot more $$ than that. I hope you're right but Samardzija is pitching more along the lines of Danks and we all know he is not worth the 15.75M he's getting.
-
Here's a potential problem. What if Samardzija accepts the qualifying offer?
-
Good grief, Samardzija is not even pitching up to the qualifying offer amount. I wonder if his agent has called the Sox looking for an extension.
-
I wonder how Steverson is doing these days...

QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 03:05 PM) if some unknown factor does develop between now and tomorrow night, lets say a combo of Benintendi or Tucker or even Cameron, gets pick before the sox, lets say for an underslot deal. that means by default some of the fav's will fall.... now comes the prayers to the baseball gods and hope it will be one the sox really like. If its a pitcher, well you know my choice. As for hitters, any one of Benintendi, Happ, Stephenson, Tucker or Stewart sound good to me. While I'm at if. Anyone know why hitters like Happ, Stewart and Dewees are not rated higher? I'm just curious is all.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 02:22 PM) Starting to look like he'll replace Noesi eventually. Quite a start to his W-S debut. He looked good but I just checked and he gave up some runs but he's young and still stretching out that arm so I'd guess he just tired out. I don't know what it is with the Sox and left handers, lol. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 02:22 PM) Dear god no. Let's hope they have something more ambitious in mind to replace Shark than Drabek. If they can get him some starts later this season (if we're out of the race), maybe I could be convinced of him as part of a competition for the #5 spot next year, but under no circumstance should he be in our top four if we're serious about competing. Drabek could serve as a bridge to Montas or Danish and the way Samardzija has pitched, I have no problem going with Drabek if need be. Definitely not first choice by any means but he is a ground ball machine with untapped potential due to his injury history so he presents an interesting option, if he stays healthy. Drabek today 6.1 7H 4ER 3K zero walks 13GO 1FO

Its possible the Sox are expecting all of Rogers, Swanson, Bregman, Jay, Fulmer and Tate to be off the board leaving one unknown before the Sox pick. Could be why rumors about bats are coming out. That unknown could be Stephenson (likely) which leaves the Sox with Cameron (doubtful), Tucker, Benintendi, Happ etc for hitters and could look at one of the injured pitchers like Allard, Aiken, Matuella or Kirby. Right now though, the trend looks like more prep bats getting picked ahead of #8 leaving the Sox a choice between two or even three of those pitchers. I think a few members have already mentioned the scenarios where the pitchers are available so good call by them.

Guerrero so far 3IP 2H 6K

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 01:44 PM) Drabek has been putting up good numbers. Hope they can get him on a path back. I think the Sox genuinely see something in Drabek as a starter. Looking at his game logs, the Sox have kept his pitch counts to the 80-90 range so it seems they are slowly building Drabek up. Love how he is turning into a ground ball machine. IMO, Drabek is being groomed to replace Samardzija. Edit: figures I spoke too soon. Drabek giving up some hits in the fourth.

Guerrero strikes out the side in the first. Drabek pitching well so far. Throwing strikes and getting ground balls.
