QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) Leury IMO should have an entire year at AAA. He had 1/2 a year there at age 22 and didn't really do well enough to earn the callup other than his ability to play multiple positions. Looking at Garcia's history in the minors and his lack of hitting in the majors, I agree he would be better off playing in Charlotte next season. Looks like it will be a four player race in ST between Semien, Johnson, Sanchez and Saladino for 2B/SS/ bench with the last guy going to Charlotte. Unless one of them is traded. This of course is based on if Alexei is traded, which it really looks like could happen.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) The rumored deal centers around Alexei for Kemp. If that is the case, the difference between Kemp and Alexei is $11Million this coming season, and $11.5 million, the following year. In the third year, with Alexei's contract expiring, the difference is, of course, the full Kemp salary. However, Kemp is young enough to justify the $21.5 million per year for the final 3 years of the contract, during his age 32, 33 and 34 seasons. If L. A. were to take Danks' salary commitment for the duration of his contract, which is 2 years at $14.25 Million per year, they would actually be paying out more during the next 2 years with Alexei and Danks, then they would with Kemp. If they needed, or even wanted Danks, that might be acceptable to them. However, the Dodgers do not need or want him, and part of their motive in moving Kemp is to reduce payroll. Therefore, a trade of Alexei and Danks for Kemp, is not realistic, much less the notion that the Dodgers would also have to kick in some money. If the Sox could count on one of their inexpensive, young middle infielders to fill the void at SS, until Anderson or Rondon arrive, I would embrace having Kemp, to combine with Abreu, to form 2/3 of the heart of the Sox lineup, for the next 5 years. If the Sox could get the Dodgers to add a promising young player, that would make the proposed deal very compelling. I had originally suggested Scott Schebler. Oh wow, I just posted about Alexei for Kemp. That rumor makes more sense from the Dodgers perspective as they are supposedly trying to get payroll to or below 190M. Any rumors to money involved? I like the idea of Schebler too.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) Yup. If Danks is not in the deal, Kemp's salary would chew up the remainder of what the Sox have left to spend, unless the Dodger kicked back BIG money. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) If they kick in "big money" in a potential deal it like means Danks plus actual young value too. Not sure what happened when you quoted my post but I was talking about if Danks was not included. I get what you're saying though. Without Danks and with big money Kemp would cost the Sox prospects, not that the Dodgers need them. What could be possible is a trade built around Alexei and Kemp. I have no idea how much money or what prospects might be involved but that's a possibility too.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) I'm not that frustrated with Leury, honestly. If you take almost any guy who belongs in AA and put them in the big leagues because he's the only guy in your org who can back up 3+ positions and you're carrying an extra DH on your bench, they're all pretty likely to struggle. This is true. I understand about Leury struggling, I really do, its the .166 BA that frustrates me. I can on hope he would do better with consistent playing time. If Alexei is dealt, I would love to see Leury earn the starting SS job in ST. I absolutely love his speed and defense.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) Yeah, I'm only interested in Kemp if the Dodgers take Danks and throw in a small chunk of change. Yup. If Danks is not in the deal, Kemp's salary would chew up the remainder of what the Sox have left to spend, unless the Dodger kicked back BIG money.

I have no interest at all in Fowler and not much in Castro unless the price was reasonable and went along with the idea of being a platoon partner with Flowers. Also want to point out that Fowler is set for a raise from his 2014 salary of 7.35M, this is his last arbitration year before becoming a FA after 2015 and Bora's is his agent. Fowler likely goes to FA so he'd be a one year rental at a reportedly "high" cost. No thank you!

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 12:27 PM) I just really can't believe how much advocacy there is for Ethier /Kemp. Sox fans, two years removed from celebrating the removal of bloated veteran contracts are falling over themselves to add on bloated veteran contracts for actual valuable veteran contracts. In all fairness, a healthy Matt Kemp is much better than Rios, Dunn etc and at an age to where ( when healthy) should be hit well for the remainder of his contract. Then there's the idea of a healthy Kemp hitting at the Cell and a 3,4,5 comprised of Abreu, LaRoche, Kemp. A trade for Kemp also means there's a possibility of trading Danks away which would help offset Kemp's salary for the next two years. I can see why fans, including myself, are open to the idea. I like the idea to be honest but I still prefer a LF that's left handed with pop and is comes with a lighter salary so the Sox have more money to spread around.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) Yeah that deal would be an absolute no brainer for us. $6M is not a lot to take a chance on a bounce back scenario for a fairly young SP with a history of success. Now if we could get AZ to go along with the proposed trade.... QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 12:13 PM) Do Joe Savery ,Logan Kensing and Juan Diaz count as our next move ? BTW Diaz is a SS http://m.indians.mlb.com/news/article/4194...spring-training from over a year ago but tells you some things about him. Big guy for a SS cannon arm. Precursor of an Alexei trade ? Spent last year in the PCL (AAA) http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_...ameType=%27R%27 It really does look like the Sox are loading up at SS for some reason or another. Maybe the Sox have a few trade proposals for Alexei they feel will be difficult to turn away from. The Sox have about five options right now with L.Garcia, Semien, Sanchez, Saladino and Diaz. Things are getting interesting.

Leury is just frustrating to me. Slap hitting and strikeouts aside I really like his game as far as his defense, base running speed, base stealing and switch hitting. If he could slap his way to .250 I would be happy to play him at SS 150 games a year. He would certainly raise some hell at the top of the order with his speed which puts Eaton second in the order where he would fit well. Or at least hit right handers and platoon him with either Semien or Saladino. I know, I'm dreaming again aren't I...

QUOTE (daggins @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 09:08 AM) I was reading this and now i'm convinced that Cahill will be a White Sock in 2015. If he's healthy, he is still a decent pitcher. Strong GB rate for his career, RH, won't take much to acquire. It's a gamble, of course, but his 2016 and 2017 years are options that can be declined if he stinks. I'm not against the proposed trade. Cahill + 6M for Snoddy? Sign me up. Cahill would only cost the Sox 6M and if the Sox do not like what they get, they buy out Cahill for a mere 300k in 2016. Not that big of a risk and I like the idea much more than Masterson.

Was Ravelo bad enough at third to not try moving him back?

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 09:38 PM) I said the same names earlier in the thread because if you factor in Bruce's down year and Cueto FA next year and Chapman the year after that Bruce is also a FA in 2017 . So it's 2 years of Bruce and Chapman and 1 for Cueto for a total of 5 years for 3 players for 2016 nd 2017 . Now I know if they go for a total rebuild with separate trades they could get a boatload of prospects . That's the part of baseball that I never quite get . Why trade great prospects for guys who have only a year or 2 left before FA ? Ok 2 years is better but 1 year sucks . For legit contenders at trade deadline it's more understandable but Q's talent and contract outweigh a lot of things .I surely wouldn't move him for both Latos and Leake because they are both FA in 2016 assuming you can't extend either one. There aren't too many instances of extensions signed after a trade with players facing free agency. Even if the Sox were in rental mode like Veeck used to do they'd still have to give up prospects which isn't happening unless some team see's more value than most of us do in our crowded MI situation or Hector Noesi. You took the words right out of my mouth sir. Another thing is, let's say the Sox desire to sign a few of those guys long term. Imagine what the additional cost per year would be to keep Chapman, Latos and/or Leaks on the south side for the next 3-6 years, just for those three! I dare not speculate without being close to a toilet for fear of shatting myself. All this on top of Bruce's salary for the next three years and the rest of the existing team. Its easy to say ”trade Q" but how much would it cost to replace Q's production? Q is se to make a measley 3.4M. Q's age +salary + performance = insane value.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 10:30 PM) The Dodgers TV deal was estimated between $8.35-8.8B (yes billion) for 25 years. If I use the low figure (8.35 ) and divide it by 25 unless I put too many zero's on the calculator it comes to around $340M per year which I think they have to give $80M of that to MLB for revenue sharing. Holy sh!t. And they are concerned about getting below 190M to avoid luxury taxes? Have I missed something?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 06:49 PM) I'd think that is a terrible deal unless the Dodgers are sending along a ****ton of money. Speaking of poop. Here you come pooping all over my idea. Did hi8is put you up to this? In all fairness I did say " built around " so it wasn't an exact scenario. How about we add Schebler to Van Slyke and Kemp? Work with me here. Its Saturday night, waiting for the lady to come home from work and I'm sobor. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 06:53 PM) I want an Alexei for Van Slyke and prospects swap. Kemp is whining - don't want that on this team. And he's specifically whining about a situation he'd face in Chicago - playing LF. Kemp might think twice if he took the time to consider he would be hitting with Abreu/ LaRoche and 81 games at the Cell. For the right deal I would take the chance on him no problem.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 07:12 PM) The way they're going, they're setting themselves up to "be a contender if everything goes right", which is what I thought they'd be able to do if they set a payroll limit in the $80-90 million range. I'm pretty ok with that. They can fill their holes at that payroll level and say they have a shot at contending if everything goes right but without leaving themselves unable to make major moves in 2016 if things do go wrong. Good points and it allows them to add a bit of payroll at the trade deadline if they are contenders which is always a good idea.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 06:04 PM) http://www.si.com/mlb/2014/11/21/adam-laro...surprising-move SI not happy.............too bad! Thanks for posting man. It amazes me how some writers get their jobs. I see much better material written on this board than what I see from alot of asshats that are paid to write. I read the headline and immediately stopped because it showed he knows nothing about the Sox or baseball in general. Just another imbicile to ignore in the world of sports writing. I think Bruce Levine might be that guys daddy.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 04:41 PM) You shoulda seen the associations back in 2004 while I was drinking still. Now it's all in fun before it was just plain nonsensical madness. All and all - it's in fun... s*** all over the clown man. I don't see the problem with poop man. I would s*** if somehow Hahn pulled off trade built around an Alexei/ Danks for Kemp/ Van Slyke swap. I mean, there would be nut filled brownies everywhere! Sheeeeiiit me timbers!

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 06:07 PM) Yeah, just did some math and it's about $74M after 16 roster spots averaged at about $.600M (3 spots for LF, RHSP and reliever). From what I read the other day, it was projection that Hahn would have a higher payroll than last year ($90M). I would say $95M is a pretty decent guess with how the market goes. If that is the case, they have about $21M or so to spend. I would also be willing to guess that either Alexei or Danks will go to save a bit of space but obviously can't count on that until it happens. $21M or so is still a pretty decent amount of space to fill 3 spots, IMO. Maybe now people will stop clamoring for Lester or Scherzer. Good work on the payroll calculations. I was thinking the Sox had roughly 20-25M left in the piggy bank.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 02:54 PM) Chapman, Bruce and RHSP for Q, Montas + We're close to contender talk there and we are relieving the Reds of quite a bit of salary. That trade pretty much taps the remaining funds the Sox have to spend and the Sox still have Danks and Noesi in the rotation along with a young Rodon who's only going to be able to pitch so many innings, if he shows he's ready in the first place.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) Wouldn't know where to begin. Certainly nothing telling in his numbers. Not trying to be sarcastic but try to google " frank Montas scouting report" and look for some more recent articles written about him. That's what I do when I want to find out about a player. Google their name with "scouting report" after it. Happy hunting.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 02:20 PM) The nice thing about the LaRoche move (granted I'm mixed on it overall) is that it only cost money. No compensation pick, no trade, just cash and a roster spot (of which the Sox have plenty of fat to cut from). Bigger moves that might immediately improve the team more at the MLB will cost probably quite a bit more cash and/or MiLB talent. It's totally the time to just step back and enjoy the ride if you're a Sox fan. This is going to be a busy offseason, judging the LaRoche move in itself is rather uninspiring, but if it's part of a series of moves, then it could turn out well. Yes sir. I did not have big expectations with having so many holes to fill but the FO is showing they mean business and look like they may make me eat my skeptical words I've written so far this off season and I will happily gobble them up like pacman. I have a more positive outlook already.

QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) The concern is that the cost of LaRoche will hinder the Sox in their efforts to address the various (and significant) weaknesses that remain on the roster. With the Sox having so many holes to fill, that can be said about any free agent signing. Just because you don't see DH/ #4 behind Abreu as being important doesn't mean it isn't. Believe it or not, LaRoche is an upgrade over Dunn and at a cheaper price. I would rather sign LaRoche for 12.5M per and have money left to spend elsewhere than sign , for example, an over priced Panda who was just offered 5/95. In this example the Sox signed LaRoche and Duke along with +3M for the current offer in on Panda. I agree that the Sox can use an upgrade at 3B and C but DH and LF are huge holes and the lack of production last year hurt the offense badly. IMO, its better to fill a hole in a position first before upgrading another. Seeing as how Gillaspie and Flowers did make improvements last season, DH and LF should be priorities as well as the pen and another starting pitcher or two.
-
QUOTE (Realfan @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 01:56 PM) You are judging the whole house before the foundation has been built. The proper time for such criticism is after the Sox break camp and head to their first major league game in 2015. The roster isn't anywhere close to being set. We'll said! Also, DH/ #4 hitter behind Abreu was a pretty big hole that needed to be filled and has been taken care of. LaRoche didn't cost a compensation pick to sign, he's a player the Sox didn't have to trade prospects for and overall should give the Sox a rather nice upgrade over Dunn for a cheaper price without a long term commitment. This is a very good fit for the Sox.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) Buster Olney wrote about the Adam LaRoche deal as well here:http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster-olney/post/_/id/8678/white-soxs-climb-boosts-al-central Here is a snippet from the piece. LaRoche raked against RHP last year. And now the White Sox seemed poised to climb, after 13 months of tremendous growth that really kicked off with the signing of Jose Abreu -- which looks as if it could be one of the great value deals in recent baseball history -- and continued this week with the signing of reliever Zach Duke and their Friday agreement with veteran first baseman Adam LaRoche, who crushed right-handed pitching last season, with an .891 OPS, 67 walks and 65 strikeouts in 431 plate appearances. Thanks for posting this. I'm even more excited with the idea of LaRoche batting behind Abreu. Surely the Sox will find a cost effective platoon partner for the LHP's. I just can't see how anyone cannot like the LaRoche signing just a little bit but hey, to each their own.
