  1. QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 9, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) I disagree completely and for this reason. how many moves, whether trades, waiver pick up, did Hahn make last yr. I remember someone mentioning it before, but I can't remember. the sox made a run for it and yeah it fell short. but it revitalize the fan base and the interest of the sox nation let alone the Nat'l sports news. low and behold, the sox can make even a bigger splash next yr with smart moves. Uh, dude, attendance and TV viewing were both down last year while the team finished 9 games below .500. The Sox were so bad in 2013 that there really was nowhere to go but up in 2014 after signing Abreu. Think of it this way. If not for Abreu, the Sox likely have another 63 game season in the win column in 2014. Abreu offensively carried the entire team all season long. I could be exaggerating a bit but you get the point. Back to Shark. I said it before and I'll say it again. If the Sox are going to use any of their precious few prized prospects, it should be for a pitcher that fits the mold of " the core" the Sox are assembling. Early to mid twenties, team control for at least three/four years, reasonable salary with the potential for an extension at some point etc. Shark is everything but that. There are MUCH better options to spend top prospects on.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 9, 2014 -> 04:02 AM) Leslie Nielsen quote. Airplane!!! As for Hahn's quote. What else is he supposed to say? " no, we won't be able to compete next year, sorry.". Its PR bulls*** for right now. On paper, no team with that many holes is a legit contender next year. This does not mean the Sox cannot become contenders but the Sox have a rebuilding team, with a rebuilding farm, with plenty of money to spend on limited quality FA's and not much of a history of spending on multiple big contracts in FA. For right now, the sox being 2015 contenders does not add up although I think they will fill a few holes and continue improving in 2015.
  3. There are other pitchers that can be had for top prospects that are younger, cheaper, have higher upside and are not a year away from FA, so why are people so focused on Shark? Makes no sense at all.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) Did anyone tell ESPN? No but ESPN told EVERYONE! Over and over and over and over and still going. Its the ending that would not end.
  5. Is it possible Canseco has tried to teach Tank the helicopter swing?
  6. QUOTE (peavy44 @ Nov 8, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) If they dont get big deal for alexei I wouldn't trade him Alexei is going nowhere. He is worth more to the Sox than another team.
  7. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 11:19 PM) I disagree. Rodon (yes, as a PTNL), Anderson, Montas, Johnson and Danish are all prospects the Braves would be very interested in for Heyward. Hell, they might even do it straight up for Rodon or two of the latter. The problem is Heyward is a FA after the year and the Sox won't be willing to pay the price for him and rightfully so. Guess I should clarify. The Sox farm is not strong enough to take a hit like that, IMO. I'm not going to get into what a potential cost for Heyward would be because none of us really know so there's no point seeing as how Heyward is not on the market anyway, as far as we know.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 8, 2014 -> 03:24 AM) Avy Montas and Rondon wasn't good enough? You missed the point... Point is that initially after the trades, many people were unhappy and felt the Sox should have gotten more for Peavy. Just look back at the thread. Peavy was over valued by the fans. The same happened with Rios. Fans thought the Sox should have gotten for Rios despite Rios contract being a big albatross in relation to Rios performance. Rios was over valued by fans. Another example is go back and see how divided the John Danks trade rumors was. Half of the fans (my self included) did not think he was worth much at all because he too had an albatross for a contract in relation to his performance but the other half of the fans insisted Danks had some real value because of the contract which ends up not being the case. This was especially funny because the mentality is, trade him he sucks and then its, well he's still worth something decent in a trade, lmao. Danks was over valued by fans. Same with Hector Santiago. Fans were b****ing about how the Sox could have gotten more for a guy that was a two pitch pitcher and had a hard time finding the strike zone. Santiago was over valued. Back to Alexei. As I've already pointed out, he's 33, hits for average with average power in a hitters paradise. If the Sox ask for too big of a return, the other team can simply call the cubs about Castro, which does not bother me since I'm thinking the Sox keep Alexei anyway. If for some reason Alexei is traded, I assure you that I will be laughing at all the hooting and hollering about " the sox should have gotten more" comments.
  9. QUOTE (peavy44 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 11:09 PM) I wouldn't i want more for alexei QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 11:13 PM) I would too. Wheeler+ Im not so sure a 33 year old Alexei with two years of control is worth a 24 year old Wheeler with 5 years of control. Alexei is passing his prime while Wheeler has his ahead of him still. I think Alexei is a bit over valued as fans sometimes do. Remember how plenty of people were disappointed with the return on players like Rios, Santiago, Peavy etc? Wait until you guys see the return for Alexei if he is traded.
  10. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) Tank $2.8M in 2014 ,Arb eligible now , 26 on 3/10/ 2015 , Bats RH , Nickname Tank Saunders $2.3M in 2014 ,Arb eligible now , 28 on 11/19/2014 , Bats LH , Nickname "The Condor" I've been championing Saunders for quite a while now as that low salaried , LH, good defense guy entering prime for RF with a move of Avi to left. Wish the guy could stay healthy though . But I know many of us want the defense to improve and thats why I targeted him in the 1st place and for all the other reasons I just mentioned . Seems like many teams want him so doubtful just Viciedo gets him. Saunders video highlights including just about everything you'd like to see http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/search/med...10&c_id=mlb Sales nickname is also "The Condor" in some circles. Don't see it used here much but it is on SSS. There are going to be positions that can have a slim upgrade which I think Saunders is over Viciedo . Better defense is key for me here along with hitting LH but has to stay healthy. He hasn't exactly piled up the AB's in his career yet so it's hard to say what he could produce over a full season. Thanks for posting the link. I enjoyed watching the highlites. As I said in an earlier post, I'd rather trade for Saunders than sign Rasmus. I love the idea of playing Avi in LF too. If the sox for some crazy reason did make a trade for Cargo, the DH spot could be used to give guys a day off from the playing field. Might help keep all four out fielders healthy. Its something to keep in mind anyway.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 05:29 PM) He would only take about double the money that Smardj would. While it won't be double I do see your point. I was thinking Scherzer would get around 25M annually but its looking closer to 30M with Samardjiza looking like 17/18M now (extension) and probably 20M or more if he has a good season and hits FA next year. I still would not give top prospects for Samardjiza, the Sox can do better.
  12. I would jizz my jeans getting Heyward but the reality is that if Atlanta put Heyward on the market, there would surely be other teams with more to offer come into play. The Sox farm just is not strong enough yet. Took me some time to realize that after Balta and I talked about Heyward three or four weeks ago.
  13. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 05:34 PM) And if they could somehow get him with Tank being the centerpiece, that would be fantastic Absolutely. Normally I wouldn't be on board with the idea of Saunders but for some crazy reason I'm OK withe the idea of Rasmus so in my crazy little world, Saunders makes sense and more so than Rasmus.
  14. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) He hit 19 homers at Safeco the year he got his most playing time. Safeco is the worst (or 2nd worst) park in baseball to hit home runs in. The home run hitting environment is very different than it was a few short years ago. ,57 players hit 20 home runs this year. In 2009, 87 players hit 20 home runs. This is along the I'm thinking as well. If the Sox are interested in picking up Saunders, its because they project him to hit for more power at hitter friendly US Cellular. Plus he's a LH bat and a defensive upgrade over Tank.
  15. QUOTE (credezcrew24 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 05:06 PM) The more I look into the market the more I think Max Scherzer is a relatively good value. Including the Minors and Ind Scherzer had 1418.2 career regular season innings which isn't far off from Samardzija. We would probably have to give up significantly more value in a trade for Samardzija then what our 2nd round pick will end up being. MLBTR's Top 50 Free Agents and Predictions has Scherzer getting around 7 years 175 million - 25 million per - which would take him to about the time he's 37. For Shields the next best RHP they predict about 5 years 100 million - 20 million per - that contract would also take him to 37 years old. Shields has thrown 2464.2 career innings already. Shields and Scherzer would both cost a draft pick as well. Scherzer is without a doubt vastly superior to Shields and Samardzija right now. I don't think the difference in predicted average salary is enough to warrant signing Shields over him, and I don't think it's smart to trade for a pitcher on a one year deal when if all goes according to plan he would demand a contract close to the Shields-Scherzer range in the first place. Welcome to the board. You must have posted your comment seconds before me. I feel the same way about Scherzer.
  16. Oh for f*** sake. If were talking about pitchers that as roughly 30 and want six year deals then just go for it all and throw the money at Scherzer. Scherzer is only six months older than Samardjiza, will only cost a second round pick as far as young talent goes but will cost more annually. The higher annual salary is a small price to pay for such an elite pitcher. That said, I'm not in favor of giving either long term contracts but if I had to chose one to give a long term deal to, it would be Scherzer.
  17. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) I was thinking the same thing when I saw they are shopping him. Tank for Saunders almost makes too much sense as a classic change of scenery trade. I'd much rather take a shot on Saunders over signing veterans on the FA market for $12+million who isn't worth it. I really like what you say here. Saunders could be a very good alternative to spending money on Rasmus. That money could be spent somewhere else and get rid of Tank and his salary. I hope the Sox explore this possibility.
  18. Oh s***, I forgot about Chris Young the hitter. I was thinking of the pitcher. Makes much more sense now, doh!
  19. I can see the Sox going after Rasmus, Morales as a fall back option if they cannot find something somewhere else but Young and Bonafacio I just don't see.
  20. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) I'd be fine with that if they trade Danks though Sale Samardzija Quitana Noesi Bassitt Sorry man but Samardjiza is going to be 30 in January, going into his last season before FA and will cost BIG money in his next contract not to mention the cost of prospects just to trade for him. Theres no way I could ever get on board with the idea of trading for Samardjiza or offering him a contract. As was mentioned already, I'd keep the prospects and go after Lester instead. Just my preference is all. There is entirely too much hype surrounding the topic of the Sox needing a RH starting pitcher. I don't buy it. The Sox need starters that can get outs and keep the team in the game regardless of what hand the ball comes out of.
  21. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 12:09 PM) Absolutely. I'd rather keep the prospect and just spend a little extra and sign Lester. But, but, we can't have that many lefties in the starting rotation! It breaks some imaginary rule, somewhere. Seriously though. I would rather give Bassitt a shot over trading top prospects for Samardjiza.
  22. If the are going to use Anderson to get a starting pitcher, I would hope that starting pitcher is better, younger and more cost effective than Samardjiza.
  23. Gattis + buldging disc = no thank you
  24. Since the Mets are trying to find space for Snydergaard, I'll take a Wheeler for Alexei swap.
