  1. Q for Puig!!! Buy your Puig jersey now Sox fans!
  2. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 06:39 PM) Probably the enormous paycheck he's going to get. But I would roll the dice just because Stanton will put more people in the seats. Problem is that it would only help for two years and then Stanton is gone. Just my guesstimate but Stanton likely gets 250M+ when he gets his contract. I just cannot see the Sox paying that much or more for any player.
  3. Eh, f*** the Cards and both Missouri teams for that matter. Give me a Baltimore vs SF World Series with Baltimore winning it all. In the most unlucky event that the I-70 series part deux happens, I'll take the Royals thank you.
  4. While were throwing s*** around... Q for Yelich and Eovaldi sounds good.
  5. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) Clearly we'd be in a better position with Andy Wilkins instead of Abreu*. *Not counting Abreu or Alexei as homegrown. Better draft position...
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 12:54 PM) Why wouldn't spending a ton of money on players who can't play be on the guy actually signing them? Is it Robin's fault Keppinger sucked? Paulino? Downs? Belisario? Exactly. If Robin is to be held accountable for poor performances then the Hahn must be held accountable as well since Hahn is the one that signed the players in the first place. Robin manages what Hahn gives him. Interesting how Robin is a bad manager, Hahn is doing a good job as the GM but the overall team was bad and Robin should be fired? That's some logic beyond my understanding.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 12:19 PM) Depends on how much they spend this offseason. They go out and spend $40 million+ on free agents, which they could do, and miss the playoffs next year, that manager's job better darn well be on the line. That certainly depends on player performances. Robin cannot swing the bat, field the ball or pitch the ball for the players. The players must be held accountable with the manager if the team underachieves.
  8. I'm all for giving Robin a chance to manage a good team before anything is to be determined. Its not Robin's fault for the injuries, the failed reclamation projects, the down years a few players had or the fact the Sox are in a rebuild. Robin can only manage what he's given. It must have been very difficult going to the pen and not know which inept schlep to chose. I say give Robin 1-2 more years of learning while the Sox finish putting together a contender. After that, no excuses.
  9. I'm with you guys. I don't really hate either team, just wanted to see something different. I am extremely sick of the Cards so go Giants. No matter what I will be cheering for the AL team in the World Series.
  10. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 07:15 PM) Before we got Abreu ,Corey Hart was all the rage around here while I was vehemently against it . Of course I was pushing for James Loney who doesn't hit for power but he had his average year pretty much. Haha, I mentioned Loney's name last winter too and was pretty much laughed at so I know what you mean.
  11. f***ing Los Angeles Bridesmaids! f*** you Cardinals! The NLCS is shaping up to be rather lame! I kinda think the Giants might have a better shot at the Cards.
  12. Come on Dodgers, wtf! I walked away to get some food and come back to find out Kershaw gave up a bomb. Fuuuuuuuck!
  13. Kershaw 5IP, 1 H, 2BB, 6 K's on 78 pitches so far.
  14. QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:59 PM) As you for your first point, I wouldn't use the same words but yes Robin has been reluctant to use his bench players but I feel this year Hahn may force his hand. Sierra is nothing like Nava in any respect. Sierra's value comes in his arm and power potential. Nava is one of the more consistent and underrated players. He's basically a better version of what Gillaspie was this year with position flexibility. He hammers RHP and gets on-base at a great clip. If the FO was to probe into a trade for Belt it would have to be us moving prospects. I think Tank could be involved but it'd be more likely to be one of our 2B prospects and one of the SP pitchers who are succeeding. I see a trade for Belt being very similar to the trade for Swisher before '08. Obviously that doesn't help my argument but Belt is a guy who can be a premier left-handed hitter in today's climate. The more I look into him, the less I am willing to believe an outstanding GM like Sabean would be willing to part with him but if Sabean is inclined to do so, he could probably do better with a team other than our Sox. Belt's made adjustments every year and was on his way to a career year until he got his thumb injury. I said in May when he went down that he was going to have his power zapped and weigh down his immediate value. We all know how thumb/hand injuries can run a player's season watching PK over the years. I hope that because of this turn of events the Susac/Posey combination is enough to push Belt out of San Fran. Susac has been great for the Giants in his short time and Posey has shown them once again that they that bat in the everyday lineup. I do fear they move Posey to 3B and keep Belt at 1B. If anyone recalls, Posey was a SS at FSU before he became the Golden Spikes winning catcher. I will keep opining for him until the Giants' camp expresses what they're going to do with Susac, Posey and Sandoval. I would be hard-pressed to find a more ideal fit for us than Belt. Whether he can play LF is an issue, but I think his upside at the plate is enough to restrict the DH position to him and Abreu. I'd ship off Montas/Danish, Sanchez + wouldn't think twice. I won't lie, you make some good points. Thing is that Nava doesn't fit the mold of the type of player Hahn has described. But, since you got me thinking more about Nava, he could be a good alternative to signing a costly free agent like Victor Martinez whom the Sox are unlikely to sign anyway. Nava would help with the lack of power from the left side. I admit, I'm warming up to the idea more and more. As for Belt. Couldn't the Giants put Belt in LF to replace Morse? I know that would kill the discussion but looking at it from the Giants POV, it would make sense. In that case I would turn my attention to Heyward in Atlanta. Not to change the discussion but I wonder if the Braves would consider your trade proposal for Belt. I'm guessing it might take a bit more but IMO, worth the inquiry.
  15. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:59 PM) As I've mentioned previously, signing one QO free agent decreases the opportunity cost required to sign the next one. Say Melky Cabrera, Victor Martinez, and David Robertson all receive QOs. Signing just one of them requires you give up a 2nd round pick, which is a lot to give up. But if you sign all 3, you can logically say the Sox are only giving up a 3rd round pick for Cabrera/Martinez and a 4th round pick for Robertson. Suddenly, the cost/benefit is technically worth doing so, and the Sox potentially have a team that can win the division next year. This makes a ton of sense. Even though signing all three would likely chew up the majority of what the Sox have to spend, I would do it. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:59 PM) I'm generally not going to be as angry at the concept of signing a FA who has a qualifying offer this year as I was last year...but I'm generally unimpressed by the guys available, including M. Cabrera. Decent season last year but when you count both the suspension and what he did in 2013, paying a whole lot of money for him does not seem like a very smart risk to me. I agree that the FA class this year is over all unimpressive but since the Sox have a protected first round pick, this would be the year you try to fill some holes. Especially since the Sox have said they think they can contend in 2015 and have the money to spare. If the Sox were to pull off something like Wite's idea, they have the DH, the LF and closer spots filled up for at least the short term while increasing their chances of contending now and the future. Plus they get two left handed bats for the lineup. Another thing is what if the Sox wait too long? IOW, they wait to make a splash in FA til 2016. If they continue to improve next season they likely will not have a protected pick in 2016. Then what? At some point, the Sox will have to spend money and I would rather see it spent now, with a protected first rounder, than later.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) It still means we would give up a 2nd round pick to sign him, in addition to the contract. I would be fine with that. The Sox have the money to spend and are not going to "contend" as they have said without spending some money on free agents and I'm not talking about cheap reclamation projects. The Sox farm system is not strong enough yet to fill all he holes via trades. They will have to speak money, period.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:34 PM) Deadline to extend QO is five days after the end of the World Series, and the deadline to accept is seven days after that. Thank you sir.
  18. QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:29 PM) I really would like to see the final deadline when clubs need to offer QO like this I can see which players are getting them. Any idea when the deadline is?
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) FWIW That's fine. I'd be willing to bet Cabrera rejects the QO and opts for FA. He's 30 and this could likely be his last chance at a long term deal (3-5 years). Plus its likely he could get a bit more per year than the QO.
  20. QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) No one thinks much of Tank and he would be scary bad in the SF's spacious outfield with the worst shadows in baseball. I would guess the Giants don't think much of Gillaspie as they gave him up for Jeff Soptic. I would trade Gillaspie and Viciedo, sign Chase Headley and Chris Young, and trade for Belt and Nava. Hopefully we can pry Nava, who is without a spot in Boston, for less than he's worth. Headley and Young would both be signed on the low. Defense, offense and balance are all improved while the only real assets (other than $$ for Headley and Young) going out would be whatever it takes to add Belt who would then join the young core. L CF Eaton 2B whoever R 1B/DH Abreu L DH/1B/LF Belt R RF Garcia S 3B Headley L LF/1B/DH Nava R SS Ramirez R C Flowers I don't know raBBit, giving Robin this many options may confuse him. I think since Tank is only 25 and can hit 20+ HR's, some teams would still value that and would be willing to sacrifice some fielding for power potential. I like your ideas with the exception of Nava, just not high on him and IMO we could get the same production out of Sierra. As for Belt. What do the Giants need that the Sox have available? That's why I thought they might be interested in Tank to replace Morse and Gillaspie to replace Panda. Both Tank and Gillaspie give the Giants players to fill voids as well as payroll flexibility since neither Tank or Gillaspie are that expensive. Not really sure what other holes the Giants will have that the Sox could help fill in a trade for Belt.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 09:32 AM) I'll go a step further and say that if you trade Quintana for that, you may as well trade Sale while you're at it. Trading a proven, young commodity who is signed to a contract like that for a package of prospects is a death blow to the rebuilding efforts. If you are trading Quintana, you have to get another very good, young cost controlled player. You have to be able to safely assume they'll stay good or continue improving. You can't risk doing that with prospects at this point. I also do not understand why people annually (or bi-annually, or every single day, or whatever) bring up trading Jose Quintana. It just does not make sense. Agreed with all of this. I think there's two rationals behind trading Q. 1- he doesn't have the sexy "stuff" that pitchers of his caliper usually have. 2- I think some get too caught in rebuilding the farm. Yes, in the right trade, Q could bring in a nice haul that COULD be key pieces in the future but that does nothing to help the cause now. The Sox have Sale, Q and Rodon to build a starting rotation around. Why would anyone want to split that up is beyond me. Especially since the Sox have so much room in the payroll to play with, we don't need to do the KW " addition by subtraction" bit. I'm not against trading anyone to be honest but guys like Q and especially Sale have so much value that the haul would be unprecedented and probably unlikely.
  22. OK, change up time. Any thoughts on the Sox going after Melky Cabrera? Signing Cabrera leaves the Sox with hopefully enough to pry Belt away from the Giants. Now the DH/LF and back up 1B positions have been addressed as well as adding two lefty bats to the lineup.
  23. QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) I've been championing the Belt acquisition for a while and I am perturbed by the fact that the Giants chose to start Ishikawa in LF over Belt. They either have little confidence in him as an outfielder or didn't want to jumble up the lineup too much. We can only hope it's the latter but it's more likely to be the former. With Mike Morse becoming a free agent, you think the Sox could build a trade centered around Tank and Belt? Another angle is if SF let's Panda walk, the Sox could try using Gillaspie as part of a trade as well. Just throwing stuff out there is all.
  24. If Hart batted left handed I would be all for giving him a shot.
  25. Way to go Nats. I'm guessing Gio will pitch next? Anyone think that maybe Detroit misses Fister?
