  1. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 09:46 AM) Hahn on 670: "At this point in time, we're not going to do anything that costs us a draft pick." Right, Hanhn said this literally two months ago or more and yet 17 pages later the war wages on. A team coming off of a 99 loss season has no logical reason to do anything that would cost them draft picks when they have one of the worst farms in baseball and the #3 pick overall in a draft that is loaded with talent (according to scouts).
  2. If the Sox were closer to contending I would be all for Santana but Jimenez? No way. Jimenez appears to be be a classic example of pitching well just before FA. Yeah his 2013 numbers looked good but he walked ALOT of batters as he always has and that will catch up to him, thankfully he won't be wearing a Sox uni when it does. I did like the idea of Garza but after seeing some good points made in this thread and the Hahn thread I've changed my mind regardless if the brewers do not sign him. Where the Sox currently stand it makes sense to see what the young pitchers can do in 2014. After this season we can make adjustments through FA, trades or even call ups. We'll also have more salary coming off the books with Dunn and possibly others too.
  3. QUOTE (hi8is @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 05:14 PM) Not to mention that whole Kershaw and Tanaka big-ass contract fest we just witnessed. Pitching is at a premium like never before and we're entering into a new era of the dead ball IMO. Pitching, pitching, and more pitching. Our ability to nab arms and meld them into useful contributors will allow us to right this ship before many other rebuilding clubs. Oh man you're not kidding. Can you imagine how much Sale's extension would cost now? Yikes! Smart move by Hahn. What you're describing with pitching is what the Cards have been doing in their system with Lynn, Wacha, Miller and Martinez. This is a big reason why the Cards have sustained success year in and year out and love that the Sox are trying to do the same. You can extend the guys that are truly special like Sale and trade they others to fill holes before they become too costly , kind of like Beane does. Then call up from your deep farm to fill the pitching hole that was created from the trade. Helps keep the payroll from blowing up by keeping young, hungry talent in the mix.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) Shoulder. Lost a ton of velocity and overall quality of his pitches OK, thanks. I would steer clear of Hansen then, it reminds of Sirotka with his torn labrum after he was traded to Toronto. Better off with what we have. QUOTE (hi8is @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) Say hello to drafting a starter at number three in this years draft. I would say this is the best bet. Sounds like the Sox aren't going after FA starting pitching and they do a good job of drafting and developing young pitching talent so it makes the most sense.
  5. What's the deal with Hansen's injury? Searched but didn't come up with anything.
  6. Just wanted to chime in and say I was dead wrong on Tanaka signing with the Yanks. Didn't think it would happen but it did. Given the money it took to grab him I'm glad the Sox didn't get him. At least now the madness of this thread will die.
  7. Here's my most recent one. Due to luxury tax and crazy spending I did not think Tanaka would sign with the Yanks, I was wrong. Hope Tanaka has thick skin and pitches well or that media will eat him up very quickly.
  8. QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:15 PM) Gio was a sandwich pick, if I remember correctly, so I excluded him. But yeah, mechanics can be funny where someone with piss poor mechanics can pitch for 20 years with great health, and someone with perceived perfect mechanics can't make it through a year without injury. And you are right about him still being in high school so it will be easier to mold him to your liking. But as I see it, he'd be my forth choice of the four we've discussed. You're right, he was a sandwich pick so my bad. He was listed as a first rounder but the 38th pick so what you're saying makes perfect sense. Its just a matter of preference is all. I just hope who ever we pick he turns into a stud.
  9. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:57 PM) High-school pitchers are too risky IMO, at least at the top of the draft. Right now, I'm still hoping Hoffman is there at #3. QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 10:25 PM) I like Kolek, but I don't know if I'd take him over Rodon, Hoffman, or Turner. Kolek has a nice easy delivery and has great stuff and frame, but I'm worried about how he throws across body. And with him being only in high school, I don't know if he's worth the risk and I think the White Sox as a whole has soured on high school pitchers in the first round ever since Kris Honel (such a promising pick as a hometown kid and great stuff but injuries got the best of him). Rodon is my favorite player right now, but I doubt he drops to 3, but we got a lot of time from now until June. Right now, I'd be happy with either Hoffman or Turner. But it looks like unless Hoffman falls on his face this year, he'll likely be gone before 3. So give me Turner than because defensively it looks like he should have no problem sticking at SS, and if he reaches his offensive potential with his speed, he'll be an all-star shortstop. They are all a risk to some degree. Depending on how the college players do this spring, right now its looking like Rodin and Hoffman could 1 and 2. Nice thing about a HS pitcher is you get them into the your teams system at a younger age to help correct any bad habits they my have developed such as throwing across the body, then again Sale throws across his body too so I wouldn't worry too much about that. You mention Honel but let's not forget Gio Gonzalez either, he turned out pretty well for a 1st rounder out of HS. Its a crap shoot no matter what. For now Kolek is my preference but like I said that could change as June gets closer.
  10. Are we really trying to compare 2 different pitchers that pitched in 2 different parks in 2 different leagues? I'm all for trying to acquire Bailey next year assuming Cincy doesn't extend/re-sign him but why get rid of Q who fits in with the teams future plans and has proven to be pretty solid so far? If anything we would hope Danks rebounds and trade him. Clearing his annual salary would would pay for alot of Bailey's annual salary allowing money to be spent to fill another hole. Especially since were going to be in the market for a DH depending on what happens with Tank.
  11. Give me Kolek. A 6'5" 250lb flame thrower with a plus slider and decent curve at only 18 years old sounds great to me.
  12. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:51 AM) I'm okay with losing out on Tanaka if it means we then sign Garza, Jimenez, Burnett, or Richard. Then trade Erik Johnson and De Aza for a catcher. I can see Garza being a realistic possibility since he won't cost a draft pick and while I like what I see in Johnson I'm not sold on him or Rienzo so I'm open to trading either one. Once Tanaka ssigns, the competition for the remaining starting pitching free agents could make them costly.
  13. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 11:46 PM) Whether or not we acquire MT, I say we package a back-end pitcher and De Aza for a catcher. I think as far as catchers go we have what we have for now. The catcher subject has been beaten into the ground. Trying to think of other ideas like possibly trading ADA or Tank for a left handed hitting LF with some pop or for a CF and use Eaton in LF. Not sure who to be honest since I haven't put any real thought into it. There are guys like Beckham, Keppinger and Gillespie that could be traded (Would be difficult) for something ( wouldnt be much) to open up space for some of our younger talent like Semien, Davidson and Sanchez . Even Ramirez is a trade possibility. Just looking to hear some realistic trade possibilities as far as teams and players coming to the Sox.
  14. Let's say the Sox don't land Tanaka which is a very realistic possibility, any ideas as to what Hahn might try next ? By going after Tanaka they've shown they have money to spend on the right player tho this doesn't mean they will spend it. I ask because I haven't given it any thought since the Tanaka rumors picked up and the subject of Castro has been beaten up pretty good.
  15. Bruce Levine reports that his sources informed him that after eating McDonalds, there an absolute 100% chance the pitcher takes a s***. This of course confirmed by Levine's source in the next stall.
  16. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 10:32 PM) End of that link: "the-latest-on-masahiro-tanaka-mariners-diamondbacks-astros-yankees-dodgers-cubs" ARE YOU SERIOUS!? No surprise, the Sox are the second team in the second city. This is why the Sox could actually be a surprise team, just seems like the media doesn't want Tanaka to land with the Sox. Could be wrong.
  17. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 09:59 PM) Or the mystery team could be White Sox.... With so much focus on LA, NY and the Cubs and the media paying such little attention to the Sox, I would not be surprised one bit. It sure seems like the media darlings want Tanaka to land with one of those three. The Sox and AZ get the least attention of the five that are supposed to be in the running.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 09:16 PM) He's going to Cleveland? Yup and he'll be insured with Allstate. Cleveland does have Jobu on their side as well as big marbles.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 08:31 PM) Twitter person @twitterpersontweeting It will be one of 5 teams, these are the 5 teams, they all like tanaka, but of these 5 teams it will only be Yankees or Dodgers, but maybe most likely the Cubs because they obviously bid the most even though we have no idea how much anyone bid, but then again it is most likely the White Sox but assuredly the Diamondbacks. In closing, The Blue Jays will sign him even though they technically are a 6th team, which rules them out You've been watching the sprint commercials again haven't you?
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) I completely skipped over the latter half of the conjecture. Read the first sentence, saw it was Star Wars and Brony and Strawberry Shortcake talk and completely ignored it. It didn't even happen because I didn't immerse myself in it. Same as Ultimate Champion's horoscope or whatever and hi8is unicorn comments. When a guy that has the obvious bias and track record of Loxas gets posted on here, I'm going to object and make my feelings known. If he turns out to be right, then I'll gladly eat my crow. I just don't buy his bulls***. I'll take back my "don't post his stuff." If you want to, go ahead, but I think it's bulls*** and I think everyone on here does too, so what does it add in the end? I agree loxas is full of s*** and doesn't know any more than we do but it is Tanaka related so it does fit the thread. IMO, since we're talking about a Japanese player that has been very hush hush, I think all rumors are just that, rumors, regardless of the source. So at this point, until Tanaka announces his decision all sources are pretty much equally full of s*** because of how quiet Tanaka and Close have been. Besides, this cubs tool and his following is good for a laugh from a Sox fan perspective while discussing Tanaka and all.
  21. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 03:41 PM) Replace beer with snickers. : OK, how about chill with Mr.Danks , have a snickers and wash it all down with a beer. :-)
  22. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) Thanks bud, I'm glad someone understands I'm not trying to talk s**t. A beer or chill with Mr. Danks. No problem dude, keep posting related material as it helps to keep myself and others on the topic at hand which is Tanaka. Maybe a combo of a chill with Mr.Danks washed down with a cold beer is the key, works for me when necessary. What amazes me is there seems to be more complaining on the rumor sources than the other unrelated talk that I admittingly have been a part of. Makes no sense.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) Dude, you are still defending this Loxas asshole. Stop. His track record is garbage. BRUCE LEVINE HAS A BETTER TRACK RECORD. Good grief what is with you today? FT35 simply said the tweet was mentioned on Waddle and Silvy, nothing more, no defending. Have a beer and lighten up.
  24. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) They're Cub fans.False sense of security is the name of the game on the northside. Yes it is, time and time again they set their self up for failure. I want the Sox to sign Tanaka but if they don't life goes on and would still consider the Sox off season a good one that's made the team better. From what I've seen on the net cub fans REALLY have their hopes up big time and if it doesn't happen for them their attendance will continue spiraling downward. The front office has set their self up for failure if they don't deliver since the fans bought into the "we won't be outbid" bulls***. The fan base is already pissed, this would be the icing on the piss cake for them.
  25. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 02:23 PM) I already told you guys, Tanaka's goddamn f***in biorhythms indicate he will be making his decision sometime late tomorrow morning or early afternoon because that is the peak of his intellectual cycle. TUC, have you taken your meds today? You seem a bit edgy, maybe have a beer or two.
