QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:05 PM) Never go full rabbit hole. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 06:51 AM) Our record should clearly factor into a discussion about the first year of a rebuild. Because that makes sense lmao -
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:31 PM) Yea on Basabe. I guess my point is that a guy with Chris's value may never get traded again. So is it fair to say this is the most a team can get for any one player? If so it's cool to think the Sox traded the most valuable player ever traded. Yes, I do agree that it's fair to say Moncada+Kopech+Basabe+Diaz is the most a team could get for one player. As someone else has said in another thread, Moncada has the potential to equal or exceed Sale's vale in WAR all by himself. If Kopech hits his ceiling, the trade becomes lopsided in favor of the Sox. Lol, if Basabe hits his ceiling, Fuhgettaboutit! QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 04:29 AM) Are you f***ing serious? Only a "small percentage?" I'm going to pass along advice Tony was nice enough to pass on to me last night. Don't go down the rabbit hole!

QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:48 PM) This is something that we as fans are going to have to start to wrap our head around. At some point, big time money is going to have to be spent somewhere. That's why I'm in the "explore Stanton" camp. I'm not sure if it's the right investment to make, but because of the payroll flexibility, it's something worth looking into. They can still lock up the core pieces on this team and have a lot left over to invest in reinforcements. I guess my point is we are going to see a lot about "the flexibility is great, no big contracts" but at some point, the money is going to be needed to compete. Yep, with ya on Stanton. I have no interest, period. I know this won't be popular but I'm not interested in Machado either but for different reasons. 3B is brutal on the lower back and combine that with how many years he will get (8-10), I just don't trust he would hold up over the life of the contract at 3B. Now if Machado was willing to play some 1B and hit in the DH spot to give his back days off from diving at the hot corner, I would change my tune for sure. The Sox FO has said they will spend when the time comes and I do believe they will. With the talent on the major league team and in the minors, there's potential for the Sox to have a much bigger core than what they had in Sale, Q, Abreu and Eaton. That means it will require money to be reserved for the future to lock those players up when the time comes and this is what I hope Sox fans understand over the next, say, 2-5 years. The lack of spending doesn't mean they are cheap, just that they want to make sure they have the money to lock up their core talent. If the Sox do end up with a large core, their salaries will add up quick but it will be for talent they drafted/acquired via trade and developed at the MLB level that have yet to peak, unlike many of the FA veteran contracts that almost always turn sour and inhibit future moves. When the time comes, I'd much rather they spend big on their own talent and use the FA market to fill in around them. -
Fun game to watch. Yanks heading to Cleveland. Gary Sanchez better get those nuts on ice after taking a direct hit off a foul tip.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:24 PM) My question is this- will a more VALUABLE player ever be traded? Basically the best pitcher in the game who is lefty, in his prime, locked up on a ridiculously cheap deal. Has the bar forever been set? Will a team ever have to offer more than the #1 position prospect and the arguably best pitching prospect? I feel like this deal may never be eclipsed based on value, right or wrong. Was the bar set low or high? Well, it's not often pitchers like Sale get traded. IIRC, the last was Seattle trading Randy Johnson to Houston which I think was '98 so it definitely doesn't happen often. Don't remember the prospect rankings on the players Seattle got in return but I'm pretty confident none were close to the likes of Moncada and Kopech. Will we ever see a prospect return similar to Moncada and Kopech for a pitcher like Sale? It's possible but I think that will be a long time from now. What's even more fun to think about is if Basabe develops into anything close to his ceiling. Time and patience are the keys with him.

QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:16 PM) There is for sure some PR fluff going on, but it's really nice to have a club going into the off-season trending upwards, and you know the players can feel it. Aside from Shields who seems to be a great influence on the younger guys, there legit isn't 1 guy on the roster that is just collecting a paycheck in the twilight of their career which is incredibly refreshing to see. The arrow is pointing up and everyone can sense it. Yep, I love the confidence and edgy attitude by the players, Avi especially has that edge or chip on his shoulder. The offense is going to beat teams in many different ways which is very refreshing from the station to station teams we've seen in the past. Good point on the payroll too. The Sox have so much flexibility it's crazy. Allows the Sox to lock players up in the years to come as they break out. Another aspect I really like is Renteria. He has his quirks but he's learning with his team and getting better. He's not too aggressive like Ozzie but not passive like Robin. The players sure like playing for him and that's good enough for me. Oh, almost forgot. The Sox have a legit player/coach on the field in Abreu. Would really like to see the Sox try to work out an extension that would keep him around for a few more years beyond his remaining two arbitration years. His ability to lead by example is already helping the youngsters and will help others as they come up over the next few years. -
Yeah, Robertson looked great. Threw 52 pitches and his breaking ball was still sharp. I laughed when Gardner hit that HR after being brushed back the pitch before. Looking like Santana won't get his first win in new Yankee stadium after all. Better luck next time bub.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 09:24 PM) Surprisingly well put together article via the trib, with some good quotes from Hahn, Renteria, Avi and Jose: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...1001-story.html Much more at the link. Thanks for posting this dude. I like the confidence the players have but the hitting is further along than the pitching. IMHO, the pitching needs one more season to be a potential playoff team. One thing I don't like is the Twinkies reference. Not to take anything from them but if it wasn't for the Sox and Tigers being so bad, the Twinkies could have been a .500 team or worse. -

QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 05:08 PM) You're the only poster out of what -- 5,000+ who is going to rate this effort a F... does that tell you anything? Yep but you're talking to a poster that has admitted they don't follow the minor leagues which makes their rating of a rebuild utterly silly. I mean, how can someone rate a rebuild when they don't follow the minors? Derp! -
Would rather keep the prospects, the $250M+, try to extend Avi and stay the course of the rebuild.

What do you take from the 2017 season?

QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:13 AM) Behind Greg's cold worn down negative Nancy exterior, there lies a sweetheart somewhere hidden. Hmmm, doesn't really answer my question but OK, I'll take your word for it. -

QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 06:27 PM) I didn't say you can't cheer, sweetheart - I just said that personally, I'll be insulted and irritated by your enjoyment. ( it's all light hearted tounge in cheek crap, man. ) Buck up gregeroo. have you been watching Guy Ritchie movies? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) That is a really good call. They just freed up a lot of cash, and could still move other players this off season. And they have Miguel Cabrera.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:53 AM) Maitan is Venezuelan, so I imagine a guy like Avi would be our best player connection to have involved. Hey, I'm game. Whatever it takes. Ozzie is a coach in Venezuela, maybe Ozzie could use his big mouth for something good.
-
Never have been a fan of handing out big money to aging vets and have preferred to spend big on young talent. Maitan is certainly young talent so if he becomes a FA, I would pull out all the stops to sign the kid. Go the Luis Robert route and get the young Latin American talent from the Sox system to help sweep the kid off his feet. Make a video ( ala Robert ) with Abreu, Avi, Moncada, Robert, Jimenez, Adolfo etc to sweet talk the kid and be prepared to spend huge to get him. Also, pump Chicago's huge Latin American community, culture and cuisine. Whatever it takes. Man, if this kid becomes a FA and is added to the FA market with Otani, this off season will be a crazy ride.

Oh wow, I went with 9 as well. Not because I feel the Yanks package was lite but because Rutherford didn't do much of anything since coming to the Sox. That's said, Rutherford is young, raw and I do believe he will break out next season. As for the rest of moves Hahn made, love em all. I honestly have no complaints. -
As for gun control. Most of my friends have guns and a few have what I would consider to be a small arsenal. Hell, my 68 year old mother has her card and so does my wife. None of them have hurt a soul, BTW.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) White Sox TalkVerified account @NBCSWhiteSox 42m42 minutes ago Avi never wants to leave: http://bit.ly/2x8wcWz I absolutely love his enthusiasm and the chip ( a good kind of chip )he carried on his shoulder this year. Certainly sounds like Avi has more to prove so I would expect to see that same chip next year. Definitely worth talking to Avi and his agent to see what they would look for in a contract extension. And before anyone has a chance to point it out. Yes, I waver back and forth almost daily on what to do with Avi.

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) The Astros teased the White Sox (and by extension, us) for months, only to bail the Tigers out of Verlander's contract. I know it worked out better for both teams, and Eloy is better than anything the Astros had to offer, but I still don't like what the Astros did, especially bailing the Tigers out. I hear ya. I think we also fell prey to the media pumping the rumors too. Even Hahn had said there was a team not as interested in Q as what was being reported which to me was a reference to the Astros. It's possible the Astros merely kicked the tires but the media ran with it because the Astros were a great fit for a Q trade.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 05:35 PM) If anything watching those guys suck so bad didn't even bother me because they are just filler and were helping the tank. Now watching the corpse of Paul Konerko (bless you Paulie but at the end you stunk, not your fault) try and lead the Sox to one last playoff run and doing thing like trading anybody with a pulse for James Shields in a desperate attempt to win 86 games -- now that s*** bothers me. Exactly. Nobody ( well, almost ) expected anything much from those guys other than being a warm body to fill a spot until some real talent came up from Charlotte to replace them. Holland was released September 5th so to complain about him is just ludicrous. The only reason Pelfrey was still with the Sox is because of the shortage on the pitching staff. The worst has to be complaining about a 24 year old left handed rookie in Jace Fry like he will never amount to anything. -
