  1. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ May 31, 2017 -> 05:09 PM) The Sox have entirely new scouting and player development staffs. Adell is a classic boom or bust prospect. Significant chance that he flames out and doesn't got well enough to reach the majors or become a regular, but a ton of teams could be looking back with regret if they pass on him and he becomes a star. I see the Sox preferring a college player in the first round
  2. QUOTE (maxjusttyped @ May 31, 2017 -> 08:13 PM) Dave Cameron stating the obvious on Q: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/dave-camero...phs-chat-53117/ I do not agree with Cameron here. A subpar first two months does not mean they should have dealt q for a lesser package. He still had plenty of time to get things right and regain value. Keeping him wouldn't be the end of the world as well.
  3. QUOTE (turnin' two @ May 31, 2017 -> 03:44 PM) Bregman is breaking out currently. I believe he has 5 homers in the last 2 weeks, including one today. After fairly rough starts both Bregman and Meadows have been hitting much better the past few weeks
  4. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 31, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) I'm arguing that many posters here didn't fully acknowledge the risk of holding onto Quintana. The idea of keeping him for "when we are good again" was lunacy from the get-go IMO. Coming into the season, if you believed we couldn't realistically compete over the course of the next three seasons, then Jose Quintana was effectively worth whatever you projected his 2020 WAR to be us. Let's say that's 4 WAR. For another team he could have effectively been worth 15 to 18 WAR over that same period. The opportunity cost of keeping him and not receiving value from another team for his 2017 to 2019 production would have always been tremendous. Whether Hahn received an acceptable offer during the offseason, we'll never know or be able to prove. The problem I have is fair value is typically defined as what the market bares (assuming no market constraints). And given how this was one of the worst markets for starting pitching in recent history, it's hard for me to believe that not a single team was willing to pony up and pay fair value. Therefore, I'm willing to speculate that Hahn may have over-valued Quintana or under-estimated the risk of holding. I said in the game thread last night, but if teams were skeptical of Quintana being a legit TOR starter before, this bad stretch where his elite command has gone to s*** isn't going to help matters. Hahn specifically came out and said that the offers for Quintana were not acceptable during the offseason. Sometimes the market gets tapped out or is not the right timing for certain moves. Moncada was not on the table at the deadline last year, but was made available in the offseason. Dealing Sale/Eaton does not force us to deal Quintana right away.
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 31, 2017 -> 08:19 AM) We have the prospect profile on Jordon Adell coming today. After reading the reaction to Jeren Kendall, I'm not expecting the reaction to Adell to be very positive Looking forward to reading it. The Sox organization has not proven to be very good in getting players with fringy hit tools to the major leagues, so I thinkSoxtalk would be concerned about a Kendall or Adell selection. Although I'm sure we all would warm upto either of them if they were the pick.
  6. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 31, 2017 -> 08:19 AM) We have the prospect profile on Jordon Adell coming today. After reading the reaction to Jeren Kendall, I'm not expecting the reaction to Adell to be very positive After drafting Mitchell and Hawkins I think the Sox might give pause to drafting toolsy players with questionable hit tools. The shift seems to be made to "baseball players" which would suggest Kendall and Adell are not the targeted players. Outside of his hit tool, Kendall has it all. I am seriously concerned about what will happen as he faces better pitching, and I see him becoming a high strikeout, low walk player who may struggle to get on base.
  7. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ May 30, 2017 -> 07:18 PM) I trust him to do what he did last year. If he's looking for hitters like Collins/Call/Fisher, Hiura will be the pick. The lack of a clear defensive position really limits his value, as he is pretty much a pure offensive player. Huira could be an underslot signing at #11 for the White Sox, but they might be passing on ultimately better talent. He seems to be a DH/LF in the future, with the upside of a Melky Cabrera? What about looking into Jake Burger, who scouts seem to think will be able to stick at 3B defensively and he brings considerable power potential?
  8. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 31, 2017 -> 07:38 AM) Keeping Quintana doesn't make any sense. They need the prospects that they will ultimately get in return for him. People keep talking about 2019 but the Sox don't have many long-term answers as far as position players go. Where are those guys coming from? They are banking on Moncada, Anderson, Robert, and Collins. What if a couple of them bust though? They need to keep adding. Quintana will need a new contract by the time the Sox are good again so I just don't think keeping him makes any sense and I also don't know how this team is playoff ready in 2019. Tough to deal Quintana if the offers just were not satisfactory though. It would have been a big mistake to deal him for a subpar return and pray that those guys pan out. I have faith Q will right the ship and perform well again. Nearly all pitchers go through rough stretches at some point. We have to think the team is carefully planning for the 2017 draft and looking to add talent. Following up what is shaping up to be a pretty strong 2016 draft with another in 2017 will be vital to our rebuild.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ May 24, 2017 -> 11:13 AM) Meh. I am the guy that said I'd love to get Reed as a third or 4th piece of a Q deal (and I would), but 1B is a fairly easy thing to fill via FA when you're ready to compete. Reed would be a great 3rd or 4th piece to a Quintana deal as his value is far lower than 1 year ago If I were the Astros I would be very interested in a player like Quintana at the deadline. Small sample size, but Martes has had significant issues with walks this season, issuing 23 walks in 24 innings pitched at AAA. He has also been far more hittable, allowing a .289 batting average against and a 5.25 ERA in 6 starts. He's young and still has plenty of time to develop, but Houston likely will need to admit that he won't be able to help a playoff push in 2017 yet.
  10. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ May 24, 2017 -> 11:04 AM) Boston has been hanging with the Yanks despite Price being out so if Price returns healthy he should provide a nice boost for Boston. Could put pressure on the Yanks to counter Price's return by making an offer for Q. If Price does not return then I welcome an ALE bidding war between Boston and NY, which I think the Yanks would win. Need the Brewers to stay relevant in the NLC to keep pressure on the cubs. Hopefully both teams will be interested in Q. AL East, NL Central and NL West are shaping up to be very tight races this season. I could see suitors emerging from any of those divisions for Quintana around the deadline.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 23, 2017 -> 07:55 PM) Tyler White, the guy who started off really hot for them in 2016 and then cooled off quickly and played himself off the roster. We don't really need any more 1B/DH types anyway. And as far as the Astros' system goes, one more feather in their cap is that Domingo Santana looks like he's going to be a keeper with the Brewers after struggling out of the gate at the MLB level. Not sure where you are getting that we do not need any 1B/DH prospects. Our system doesn't really have any solid 1B or DH prospects in it right now.
  12. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 23, 2017 -> 07:58 PM) Weird feeling/prediction. I think MacKenzie Gore drops out of the top 10. No basis on it, just a gut feeling. Pretty much a lock Gore goes in the top 8 at this point I would say I'd be pretty surprised if he was on the board at #11, and I'd think the White Sox would select him
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ May 23, 2017 -> 08:27 PM) You pick players that can become starters. If you trade Q, the depth at starting pitcher gets very suspect with Rodon being a question mark. Teams ALWAYS need more pitching. I know our system needs position players, but you truly can never have too much pitching depth. Injuries occur so frequently that having a deep system can allow you to be competitive for the long haul. We should be looking to acquire the best prospects possible, regardless of position.
  14. QUOTE (striker @ May 24, 2017 -> 07:13 AM) Q will return a top 20 prospect. It will be one of: Jimenez, Robles, Rodgers, Martes, Devers, Brinson If Price isn't producing by the trade deadline, my money would be on Q to Boston. Devers would be a very nice addition to 3B. You'd have to think Tucker is considered a top 25 prospect at this point as well given his age and performance
  15. QUOTE (GreenSox @ May 23, 2017 -> 03:56 PM) It's 4 top 100s (by some counts) and if you get Tucker/Martes, you won't get much else. If Sox don't think thatd Tucker/Martes are that far ahead of the other group, then do it. This would be a pretty even trade for both sides, but I'm not sure Houston wants to part with 4 top 15 organizational prospects for one player
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ May 20, 2017 -> 09:06 PM) Sounds like Astros have their sights set on Cole. Don't blame them, probably a better fit Quintana comes with an additional season of control, which you certainly cannot discount that value. Bleacher report proposed: Quintana for Fisher, Paulino, Perez and Cameron Certainly a very interesting proposal due to the depth, but not getting Tucker or Martes is curious.
  17. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 23, 2017 -> 10:15 AM) Jesus Luzardo would be a nice get. Was a top 30 draft prospect out of HS prior to the TJS. I think they could land a 2nd piece better than Ward at this point but that would have been a nice trade at the time Luzardo could be an interesting guy coming off TJS, agreed. I would want to see a better piece than Ward coming back as well. Ward is by no means bad, but questions remain about his ability to stick defensively at third base and he is a well below average runner. His hitting has been solid at AA ball so far this season, but if he cannot stick at third defensively then his bat and power really need to play up for him to have value.
  18. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ May 22, 2017 -> 07:52 PM) How rare is a 60 FV hit tool? Moncada is supposed to be the best talent on the planet that isn't in MLB, and his hit tool grades out 55 FV. A scouting director said Robert is the best player on the planet, and his hit tool grades out 55 FV. Just once I'd like to see a White Sox hitting prospect graded with a 60+ FV hit tool. A true 60+ hit tool is pretty rare in the minors right now. Gleyber Torres, Yoan Moncada, Ahmed Rosario, Victor Robles (future), Ozzie Albies (future), arguably Bellinger, possibly Eloy Jimenez and that is about it right now 60 grade hit tool projects to a guy that should regularly hit for better than .280 batting average and likely better than .350 OBP.
  19. QUOTE (yesterday333 @ May 23, 2017 -> 09:52 AM) I'm not sure what to believe with these rumors of what has fallen through... Weren't there rumors that it fell apart because we insisted on Severino? And there have been rumors that we have talked with the Nats multiple times this season, then Nightingale keeps saying we haven't had contact with them since the offseason. Severino's defense is good, but I have doubts his bat ever becomes enough to be more than a backup catcher. A .502 OPS in 28 games at AAA this season is a small sample size, but it is also concerningly bad. I think it will end up being a good thing that we did not deal Robertson to the Nats for that return. The price will likely be higher if Robertson continues to play well.
  20. QUOTE (GreenSox @ May 23, 2017 -> 06:52 AM) That Robertson return was reasonable at the time. Don't be so sure that we're flush with pitching prospects. It's hard to turn those prospects into major league starting pitchers. Most flame out. This year their are bright signs from the youth on the major league roster, but that's from position players and relievers. And you'll need plenty of depth, else you have another year of Noesi. Take the best talent we can get. We have to think Robertson's rebound has helped his value, as well as his contract being less of a burden with each passing month. I would not be thrilled with a return of Luzardo and Ward and would certainly be hoping for more at the deadline.
  21. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 22, 2017 -> 07:29 PM) You're right, Ky. The Seattle announcer on the baseball package said Scherzer was pulled. Tks. Nightengale reported the Nationals were set to send luzardo and ward to the sox for Robertson, with the six picking up half the contract, but financial terms could not get agreed upon. You would have to think Robertson's stock is up from the off-season due to strong performance?
  22. QUOTE (GreenSox @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:21 PM) Burdi and Robertson for Robles would be a fantastic move by Hahn. If I am the Nationals I am not trading Robles Robles is 100% the replacement for Harper once he leaves in free agency If the Nationals were truly desperate for relief help they could certainly deal guys like Soto, Keiboom, Stephenson or Neuse. Those guys would be able to get you quality relievers. Robles and Fedde are not going to be traded
  23. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ May 21, 2017 -> 10:58 AM) Don't think we'll see Robert with an affiliate for a few more weeks/months, but I do see him moving quickly Reasonable ETA on the South Side is Opening Day 2019 If Robert is on our opening day roster in 2019 that would mean he blew past all expectations and is certainly on the path to superstardom. I do not see that happening, at least so quickly. He will spend the entire season in the low minors, possibly seeing some time in high A Winston-Salem in 2017. If he performs really well the Sox could send him to the Arizona Fall League to test his skills. Realistically we have no idea what his ETA will be until he plays in the minors for several months. It's a big culture change moving to the USA and playing professionally. Make him earn a promotion.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ May 18, 2017 -> 07:32 PM) Gives up grand slam. Not impressed at all, as he looks like a reliever with the swings lefties are getting off of him. Haseley has had such a good season, I don't really see a way that he falls out of the top 10 picks. Pavin Smith's metrics are pretty solid (very hard to strikeout), but I'd value him much higher if he could play passably in the outfield than being a 1B prospect only.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2017 -> 03:46 PM) Very nice to see on Micker especially. This is a system begging for hitters to emerge, if he is starting to push past potential and towards his ceiling the system starts to look much better. Micker making more contact and hitting for average is a step in the right direction, but his walk rate is still terrible and he is still striking out alot. I realize he is young for his level, but without improving plate discipline it's hard for me to see him performing against more advanced pitching at the higher levels.
