  1. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 15, 2017 -> 11:01 AM) Rutherford has never even played above rookie ball and is only 19 years old. There's no way I'd take someone as uncertain as him as the main piece in a Q deal, especially considering Q is as much of a sure thing as there is in all of baseball. Totally agreed The price for a #1 or upper echelon #2 starting pitcher like Quintana on a cheap 4 year contract should be sky high Rutherford is a good prospect, but certainly not enough to headline a package. Sox need multiple elite prospects to even consider a move.
  2. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 14, 2017 -> 03:44 PM) And get a big payday on his next contract. Take the opportunity the Sox give him to start and prove himself during a rebuilding year could ideally land him a multi year deal at the end of the season if he is healthy and effective
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 14, 2017 -> 11:39 AM) The Sox have used this path in the past, and it has worked out just fine. I do not care how much pressure exists to get our prized prospects to the mlb level this season so that fans can see these guys on a regular basis, I'd much rather we keep Moncada/Giolito/Kopech/Lopez/Burdi/Fulmer/etc. in the minors the entire season to develop Why rush these guys when we are not going to contend? Why waste service time when we are not going anywhere this year? I'd rather bring these guys up in 2018 when they can ideally hit the mlb club fully ready to contribute to getting this team back on track Giolito, Moncada, Burdi, Lopez, Fulmer have all barely spent time at the AAA level, and a full year down their will do wonders for them
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 14, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) I am so disappointed that they aren't even giving it a chance. Well he currently throws from the stretch, which is not all that common for a starting pitcher I'm not sure why they do not stretch him out and give him a chance to start while we are rebuilding for the next few seasons? If that does not work out he can always relieve More than likely, Sox scouts feel much better about getting him to the majors in relief rather than screwing around trying to get him to be a starter. He was a reliever in college, so they might not want to mess with a good thing?
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 14, 2017 -> 10:45 AM) I understand what you're saying, and excellent relievers have extraordinary trade value, but what are the odds that Burdi really gets there? Even if he's Joba Chamberlain and absolutely filthy for a few years, but falls off, how valuable is that in the long run? Ceiling wise, Burdi is one of the best relievers in the game, but if he doesn't get there, we're talking about a guy who has limited value on the trade market. Elite, top 5 mlb relievers like Chapman, Jansen, Miller, etc. have tons of value, especially come high leverage playoff time...but unless a prospect is the next Mariano Rivera I do not think these players warrant a top 100 ranking If the Sox decided to give Burdi a shot at starting, it might be a different story
  6. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) In before someone else mentions Tatis at #78 If Tatis is really that legit then the Shields trade is a disaster, but it's still really early to tell This is a solid write up overall. I feel like Collins will have a better hit tool than 30 present/40 future grade though, especially due to his plate discipline. I'd go 40 current/55 future hit tool
  7. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 12:00 PM) That's not what GMs said at the deadline based on the prices they paid for elite relievers. Front offices are starting to realize these guys provide much more value their volume-based WAR would suggest. Not all runs/outs are created equal and high leverage ones should be valued accordingly. And pointing out that these guys only get 60 -70 innings a year is completely ignoring their potential use as weapons in the post-season. I feel pretty confident in saying that with even one dominant major league season, Burdi would be able to net a haul that included at least two top 100 pieces. If such a player isn't considered a back-end top 100 prospect, then something is wrong with the ranking process IMO. The potential for a mid rotation or better starting pitcher or above average mlb starting position player will always be seen as more valuable than a really good relief prospect. Burdi is a top 150 prospect that can become a high leverage setup man or closer, but those prospects just aren't going to show up often in top 100 rankings
  8. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 14, 2017 -> 07:51 AM) There is a stark difference there. Benny never played Rookie ball and Rutherford has never played above rookie ball. I think that Rutherford could get to that status, but it would more than like be 18 months than six. Come July he is going to be a 20 year old prospect that has never played above A ball. The knock on Rutherford in the draft last year was that he was old for a HS player (19) and thats why many of the analysts believe he slipped to where he did. Perhaps, but Benintendi's speed and defense still grade out significantly better than Rutherford's You can't really teach speed, and scouts figure Rutherford's speed will slow down as he fills out, which will limit him to a corner OF spot. He looks like a quality prospect, but is at least three seasons away from the majors.
  9. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 14, 2017 -> 07:05 AM) I'd take Rutherford, Mateo, Andujar, and Kapreilian in a heartbeat but I don't think New York would do that. There's too much uncertainty in that package in my opinion, plus I'm not sure the Yankees would do that All of those players have some sort of legitimate question mark 1) Rutherford = distance from majors and still has a lot of development left 2) Mateo = attitude issues, suspension, some questions about the bat, tons of defensive errors 3) Kaprelian = Can he stay healthy? 4) Andujar = defensive issues
  10. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 01:10 PM) I am not sure there is a deal to be made with the Yankees without Torres, if they do not include him I don't think they would beat a package from the Pirate (Meadows)/Astros(Martes/Tucker)/Braves (Albies) or Cardinals (Kelly+depth). Frazier is a nice player, but too much swing and miss in his game. Rutherford is much to far away to be considered a key piece. The rest of their prospects are fine, but nothing really jumps out about them to me. Mateo's stock is down, Andujar may be a pitcher by the end of the year. There is not a lot of quality depth to me in the Yankees system right now, if they don't throw in Torres, someone like the Braves or Cardinals could jump in with the depth in their systems an surpass what the Yankees could offer. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2016/12/6/1...spects-for-2017 I'm going to disagree with you on that point. The Yankees have one of the deepest farms in the mlb.
  11. QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 12:37 PM) I have seen three ABs from Moncada this spring. He's gone 1-3 with a double a 2Ks in those three ABs. The only double he had he flicked his hands over the outer half and short hopped the CF fence. Another AB he had 6 pitches, did not swing once and was rung up on ball four. The ball was way off the plate. The other time I saw him strike out it was on a ball too. Obviously, this stuff happens but if he got these two walks, his stats would look a lot different. If he got these two walks, instead of the K's, his AVG/OBP would be .222/.382. This is a very small sample size is my point as opposed to making excuses for the guy. This guy was an offensive force last year at two leagues when he was playing over his age. He went to the AFL and showed more of the same. This is a guy with elite speed, the ability to take a walk (at age 21 mind you) and an elite arm. He's struggling with offspeed and making contact yes, but there's no bust in this guy's game. It's a matter of how close he comes to his ceiling. Frankly, what I've seen from the guy at the plate has made me more excited. This guy doesn't even need to square up the ball to get it out of the park. His hands and overall strength are ridiculous. If he extends and makes some form of barrel contact there's a possibility it's going to get a XB. He's just that strong. TLDR, there are enough tools in this guy that he can be a very productive player regardless of how much he strikes out. People need to relax. Moncada is built like a NFL running back, lean and strong While he has racked up k's, he also draws a solid amount of walks at this stage of development I also do not see a player with bust potential, but rather an mvp candidate/one of the best players in baseball ceiling and a floor of a solid mlb starter He's our blue chip guy, one who the Sox will continue to add talent to build around moving forward
  12. QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 12:40 PM) A guy who plays SS can likely play any position on the diamond outside of the battery. The Sox aren't going to turn down a SS prospect they love because of TA. You get all the best players up the middle and hope you have to worry about their positions later. Exactly, your shortstops are generally some of the most athletic guys on the field, and most could play several other positions if asked
  13. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 11:46 AM) No chance Torres goes anywhere IMO. Agreed Moncada would have been untouchable if it were not for Benintendi and Devers also being in the Red Sox farm system Sox best bet is really to wait until mid season to swing a deal. Some prospects will raise their value, while others will falter
  14. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 11:11 AM) It wouldn't shock me if Cashman considered him "untouchable" (even though I don't think he should be for a player of Q's caliber). In all honesty, a 4 or 5 player package headlined by Frazier/Rutherford would be enough for me in all likelihood assuming the other guys are somewhat decent (maybe Mateo, Andujar, Fowler, etc). Yankees prospects are perpetually overrated Torres is likely viewed as untouchable, which hurts the chances of a deal coming together
  15. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) If anything, this spring probably has shown them he needs to stay down for awhile I've been saying, a full season in Charlotte would do him a ton of good He would have less pressure and would be fully ready when called up sometime in 2018 He is very much like a young Robinson Cano, but with significantly more speed. Be patient and he can blossom into a franchise player for the Sox
  16. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 09:50 AM) Eh, no big surprise that Moncada needs more time. He's 21 and except for the brief call-up last September, he has not played above AA. He will be fine, just need to be patient with him. Exactly, most 21 year olds would be striking out at a high rate facing much older and more developed competition
  17. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) C'mon now, you know that's not what I mean. I'm just saying the early results aren't as promising as I would've hoped for. It's spring training. Lets wait until a few months into this season before rushing to judgement
  18. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 09:02 AM) I know it's only been a handful of games and a small sample size, but I'm starting to worry a bit about Moncada's K rate. MLB pitchers are going to eat him alive if he doesn't improve. He needs reps A full season in AAA will go a long way towards helping him improve. We have to remember that Moncada is a prospect at this point, not a finished player
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 08:27 AM) Guys the Rockies are not going to trade their entire farm system and a starting outfielder (especially after losing one backup) because Ian Desmond broke his hand. My thoughts exactly That proposal is essentially the whole Rockies farm, which is nuts Rodgers / Hoffman / Murphy would be a huge haul for Quintana alone
  20. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 04:02 PM) Exactly. If people are OK with the acquisition of Dunning then I don't see how anyone would object to Groome since they were both drafted in '16. I would be ecstatic to acquire a talent like Groome. Imo, there is no timeline when it comes to rebuilding an organization from the ground up. Get the best talent possible regardless of their age. Dunning is 22 years old and pitched in a major college program. He is much closer to being mlb ready than an 18 year old Groome. Completely different timelines between those two players I'm not saying anything against Groome, but he is a minimum of 4 years away from the majors
  21. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Mar 8, 2017 -> 09:06 PM) David Robertson coming in for Team USA. Nationals have a scout in attendance. His Team USA stint could influence his trade market. @WBC https://twitter.com/philgrogers/status/839647892621176833 Eh, possibly Teams will put more stock in early season performance than on exhibition games like this As long as he is healthy and pitching to his ability, Robertson will have some trade value
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 8, 2017 -> 05:32 PM) CSN Chicago‏Verified account @CSNChicago 34m34 minutes ago #WhiteSox eyeing fifth or sixth game of season for Carlos Rodon's first start: http://bit.ly/2mHxl6f (@JJStankevitz) #WhiteSoxTalk Sox have done an outstanding job at keeping players healthy. Trust them to do the same moving forward. Why ride Riding hard in a rebuilt year? If much rather limit his innings to Dave good seem for when we are competitive again
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 8, 2017 -> 02:42 PM) The value is they paid $62 million for the cheap years of service. If he turns into a star, they re-coup their investment easily. They get Sale for 3 years. To re-coup the $100 million can be done, but the overall surplus value is going to go down if Moncada is great. I really doubt other teams would have traded him had they made the same investment, but a lot of things lined up. Sale is cheap and great, and DD wasn't around when Moncada was added to their organization. I doubt most teams would have traded Moncada, except the Red Sox He would be an "untouchable" is any other system, lets be honest
  24. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Mar 8, 2017 -> 08:21 AM) It is but since he jumped to the majors last year, AAA is the right level. For example, Anderson had about 250 AB at AAA before he jumped to majors. Another question for Moncada is how he progresses at 2nd since he got bounced around position wise last year as well. A full season at AAA would do him a ton of good As soon as he gets called up the pressure to perform at a high level will be very real. In AAA he can focus on development and not worry about being a franchise savior until he is ready
  25. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 8, 2017 -> 11:35 AM) I guess. The Red Sox must have not been compelled to put a third blue chip guy on the table if they knew their offer was already the best. It's just annoying. I like Basabe's potential but Diaz doesn't do much for me. He just seems like another bullpen arm. Even a guy like Travis or Dalbec in place of him would've made the deal much better. Did you know Diaz did not allow a single earned run over his last 22.2 innings pitched in the minors? He was rock solid in relief to close out the season and showed 22.2 ip 14 hits 11 bb 31 k's He seems to have really turned a corner and improving. Sox scouts undoubtedly noticed this and wanted him to be included in the Sale deal.
