  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) I want Alvarez. The Sox rebuild is SLOW. So try to win this year as well. We need a DH desperately. On paper he'd be a prime candidate to blossom. We always sign pitchers who are on the comeback trail, why not hitters? Alvarez would fill a need. Then you add a catcher and a middle reliever via trade if we are in contention at the all star break. I can't figure out how the Sox are selling any season tickets at this point. They are just telling the fans we are rebuilding at a snail's pace. We have a ton of veteran players still but we have no intention of contending with them. Seriously ... Shields?? Robertson?? Frazier?? Melky?? Avi?? Abreu?? Lawrie?? Holland?? Q?? And we're rebuilding?? I don't get it at all!!!! Don't insult me, White Sox. Pick up Alvarez now please. What does Alvarez do for us though? He is marginally better than replacement level with limited upside Our intention is to TANK the next 2 seasons, why bother making additions like him?
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 09:42 AM) Nationals just signed Blanton, making Robertson to Wash just about dead for now. Really disappointed Jones isn't closer to start the year, but I guess Robertson was too nice in the clubhouse last year How is a guy like Blanton not signed yet? at least to a one year deal after the solid 2016 season he had? He is not a closer though, they still have the same issue
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 09:38 AM) Probably will be able to get cheapies off Stubhub this year whenever. I hate to be cynical, but why bother paying full price when you can just get bleacher tickets off stubhub for $11.00 whenever you want? Sign me up for the cheapos

  5. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Feb 25, 2017 -> 08:32 PM) Alex from Fangraphs said that the Sox are looking to acquire athletic guys that play premium positions, which is something they lack in their system Beer might not go 1:1 overall because he projects to be a 1B at the next level He is a great hitter, but not overly athletic and is pretty limited in the outfield I'm hearing from scouts Very few college outfielders have gone no 1 overall, let alone one who projects to play 1st base

  7. QUOTE (turnin' two @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 08:05 PM) Can't we pretty much ignore Levine in general? When was the last time he actually broke Sox news? Bringing in Eddie Collins? Damn near 100% now that we are looking at a July bidding war for Quintana, which could turn out to be the best decision the Sox could make What a great feeling it would be to unload Quintana for a huge haul of prospects from a contender
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 08:49 AM) He fits as a guy who if he performs, might be able to be flipped for a prospect. Or if he is good, a guy who could be a long term DH but that is really reaching. They aren't going to sign him. His skillset will always keep his salary down as his defense will keep teams from ever paying him. I still don't get the Matt Davidson love. At least Avi sucked in the major leagues. Davidson sucked at AAA and people want Avi out of here and Davidson given a chance. Even Davidson's "breakout" last year gave him a OPS .001 lower than Leury Garcia. They are all pretty much the same age. Leury is 8 days older than Davidson, and Avi is about 3 months younger. Alvarez is highly unlikely to be worth much of anything at the deadline as his glove is terrible, limiting him to DH only I honestly don't think he does much of anything for us as a rebuilding team
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 04:18 PM) Oh, good, thought he was at like 88 It's early in spring training. I wouldn't be overly concerned about fastball velocity or stats right now Staying healthy is the most important thing

  11. QUOTE (maxjusttyped @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 11:18 AM) Where are you seeing the Braves? Perhaps there is a report I missed, but the Braves GM specifically mentioned he wasn't interested in Quintana after not trading for Chris Sale. http://www.ajc.com/sports/baseball/braves-...asWNBP4ahTgIvO/ Braves are at least a season or two away from contending. I don't see them being realistic to move significant prospects for Quintana
  12. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 11:15 AM) Sounds as though the three most interested teams for Q were the Braves, Pirates and Astros and are expected to be competing (Braves?) by the time June/July rolls around and there's likely groundwork already laid from winter talks. The Dodgers have one of the most brittle starting rotations in baseball so I think they end up in the mix for Q. The Mariners expect to contend in the ALW and their rotation has potential for a hole or two. Vogelbach, Lewis and O'Neill would be a great start to negotiating for Q. I'm hesitant to say the Rockies but if they can hang with the Dodgers long enough in the NLW, it's possible the Rockies call about Q when June/July comes around. There's potential for more action as the season gets closer to the deadline but the flipside to this is there could be more pitching available by then if Archer and/or Gray rebound in the first half. None the less, if Hahn has not received the offer he's looking for then waiting is the right move, even if it takes until next off season (which I doubt it does). I don't see the Mariners being a good fit as a Q trade partner. Seattle would have to clean out it's middling at best farm system, which is not likely in their best interests
  13. QUOTE (Soha @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) I agree with that under one stipulation...they need to lean towards position players with certain things. Specifically any return on a Quintana trade and the #11 pick in the upcoming draft. I mean yeah, if they think the next Chris Sale fell to #11 then you take him, but otherwise I hope they lean heavily towards taking a bat there. Regarding specific positions, yeah, that's irrelevant at this point...just load up on the best talent available and sort it out later. Of course we need position players, but I would not pass up acquiring arms if the Sox believe them to be better prospects As of right now the draft seems to be very pitcher heavy
  14. QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 26, 2017 -> 11:41 AM) So many things can change over the course of 2-3 years. Free agent signings, trades, Latin American acquisitions, etc. I'd be upset with the front office if they took a lesser deal of talent because they were targeting certain positions for prospects. The success rate is so small on those who hit, I want to give myself the best chance for those guys becoming successful MLB players. If they do, you figure out positions when that time comes (trading two of those now developed prospects for an MLB veteran OF for example). There are a lot of different ways to go, I just want the Sox to have the most talent. It will make things so much easier. Exactly Sox should be looking for best players available regardless of position moving forward. You can always add through free agency down the line, but right now we need an influx of talent across the board
  15. QUOTE (Soha @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 09:26 AM) Didn't he already tell us it was a fact that Quintana would be moved before spring training? I mean, this article literally tells us nothing. Thanks Bruce. I highly doubt that Quintana gets traded until closer to the deadline, unless a team overwhelms us with an offer
  16. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) If the Sox want Severino for Robertson, I'm sort of surprised a deal isn't done yet. Seems like a reasonable deal for WAS, even w/o kicking in any money. I'd only consider Severino for Robertson if the Nationals ate the entire remaining contract Even then, I don't love the deal and think we should look to get more out of the Nationals
  17. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 05:41 PM) The Nats would be stupid to try to move Severino before at least trying to move Norris. If a deal is going to happen, then the Sox have to hope that there are zero takers willing to give up another arm for Norris. Norris can't have much trade value at this point
  18. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) If the Sox were trying to contend then Norris would make sense but since they are rebuilding the Nat's have to be willing to part with Severino if they are going to trade a catcher. I'm not sure the Nationals want to move Severino He is only 23 years old and under long term control Even if his ceiling is modest, he is the sort of player who can have a long career as a defensive backup
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) Pena Pena seems like emergency depth at best right now I doubt he cracks the mlb roster unless we have multiple big injuries
  20. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) What young core? Sure they are pretty deep with pitching. I still see a really thin system positionally. No? Basabe is nowhere near ready. Other than Collins and possibly Moncada coming up what young core are we speaking of? Right now we do not have much of a young position player "core" beyond Moncada, Collins, Basabe and Anderson
  21. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 12:53 PM) This is true, but to raBBit's point the early returns haven't been promising. Out of the first group, Martinez is probably the biggest success and he barely cracked futuresox's top 30. I'm higher than most on Cruz, but he doesn't deserve a top 30 spot at this point in time. Rodriguez's 2016 season was a huge failure. Same goes for Adolfo, although it's way too early to jump to any conclusions on him just yet. Honestly, outside of Nunez's breakout season, Solorzano's solid performance (despite underwhelming stuff), and Tatis's rise in prospect status (not with us mind you), there were simply not a lot of positives on the Latin American side of things. Sox need to do a better job with international scouting and signings The bonus skimming deal really set them back, but hopes are that Paddy can start to right the ship Frankly, the mlb needs to overhaul it's international player rules. Having a few clubs go nuts with overspending in certain years is really not the best way to handle it. Next CBA should include more discussion on an international draft
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) There is quite literally a zero chance that the White Sox take on all of Pablo Sandoval's salary. Why would the Sox take on roughly 60 million in remaining salary? That would make little sense, even if a top prospect was attached Frazier's trade value is close to non existent at this point. Our best bet is for him to bounce back and have a strong first half
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 11:44 AM) If catchers were so valuable for just defense or framing and no big hit tool, we wouldn't see Weiters going for 2 year deals and castro on 8 million AAV. I don't buy that a defense only catcher is so rare that we target that over a pitcher/position player with higher ceilings. If he is our main target, I hope he's Sal Perez behind the plate. Otherwise, I hope we are getting something interesting alongside him. Sox organization currently does not have a single catcher that is considered plus defensively as far as I know Can you find them? Yes. But it never hurts to have depth I'd fully expect more to be included with Severino
  24. QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 11:37 AM) I understand this but Hahn appears to be in go big mode with all of his trades. Considering he hasn't made too many moves yet that shows he isnt just settling for back up catchers. I dont buy that the trade is centered around a Severino or if this trade opportunity with the Nats even exists. They might like him in a trade but I would be shocked if he is the headliner. Soto or Fedde + Severino should be the target Sox should be open to kicking in cash to get the best possible return
  25. QUOTE (daa84 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 11:25 AM) someone is going to have to explain the severino love to me. in over 1500 minor league ABs his slash line is .243/.294/.338 i get that he is a very good defensive catcher, but doesn't seem the guy can hit a lick (and i could give a s*** about his 38 major league ABs) Catching defense is something that has been viewed as more and more important over time, even if only for a backup Teams really value depth at the catcher position, and scouts seem to think that Severino could have a lengthy career as a glove first backup. His ceiling could be a regular if the hit tool develops further Getting Severino plus a quality prospect would be a very good deal
