  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) Even if Collins can stick at Catcher, he is probably two or three years away. It doesn't hurt to have someone behind the plate who can help our young pitchers instead of hurting them, and maybe stunting their development. I'm totally fine with Severino being a part of a Robertson package, but more certainly needs to be included (hoping Soto)
  2. QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 10:29 AM) I know you cant just look at one guy in Collins and think you have a position held down for the future but it seems odd to me that the Sox would target Severino only in a deal for Robertson. I would think that they would want to target talent were they have almost no talent in the making like 3rd base, more outfielders, or 1st baseman of the future. But I guess this is what rebuilding looks like, you dont just fill positions in order. You have to stock pile talent wherever you can get it. It never hurts to have depth an options at catcher Severino seems to have the floor of a glove first mlb backup, with the ceiling to be a regular if the hitting develops Even if Collins sticks at catcher, we will need backup options. Nobody catches every game anymore.
  3. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 10:15 AM) They won't trade Soto for Robertson. If the Sox kick in some cash, I could see the Nationals parting with an 18 year old Soto and Severino They will have added Robertson at a more palatable number for two seasons, and not parted with any prospects close to the majors I see that as a win win deal
  4. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 10:10 AM) Norris is an excellent framer. Norris was awful at the plate last season. Could he bounce back? Sure, but the Sox will want Severino plus a quality prospect in return
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 10:10 AM) Completely agree here. I'd rather have more upside in a Robertson deal. I'd take Severino along with 2 far away prospects for DRob and like Lawrie or something. Robertson for Severino does nothing for me though. I'd take Soto + Severino, Sox kick in some cash and lets make a deal happen
  6. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 10:01 AM) A potential big domino of Wieters deal. #WhiteSox need a catcher, and #Nats have a bunch of them now. https://t.co/BVgoSJEGZf https://twitter.com/MarkZuckerman/status/834065396437245953 Norris or Severino are not good enough to land Robertson, even if the Nationals eat the entire contract I'd be looking for at least one legitimate prospect plus a catcher like Norris or Severino in return
  7. QUOTE (Soha @ Feb 20, 2017 -> 12:11 PM) Most likely. Unless a would be contender gets a major injury during spring training or the WBC. Since we are out of real rumblings to discuss, imagine a player like Lester goes down in spring training with a significant injury. Would the Cubs get seriously involved with a major rotation hole in the middle of their contention window and Arrieta about to depart in free agency? Crazier things could happen
  8. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 20, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) After the Sale and Eaton trades, I'm glad they didn't add any offense via FA this winter. I hope they do the same next offseason. This team is at least 2-3 years away from competing so might as well save that $ for when it is really needed like two winters from now. At some point, they do need to unload Q, Jones, and Robertson for position player prospects though. While it may be realistic to sign two players like Brian Dozier and Wilson Ramos two years from now, they are going to need a lot more than that to compete even if guys like Anderson, Collins, and Moncada are contributing. Rebuilding is going to be a multi year process The organization will look different 12 months from now than it does today with the draft, trades, shrewd signings, player development, etc. We certainly have a long way to go with bats, but everyone has to like us stockpiling young arms with high upside The Sox are in a great payroll position moving forward, with very little on the books past the next couple seasons once Frazier, Melky and Shields are gone They certainly will have enough to add to the roster via free agency, but building from within will be important too. It's not just about the near future within 5 years, but building an organization from the ground up that is capable of sustained success for the long term as well.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 20, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) At this point, you have to assume Q is here. The window has closed on this deal until at least June. That is not the end of the world, especially if the right deal has not presented itself If the team is doing better than expected, having Quintana on the roster won't hurt He could easily be the most valuable starter on the block at the deadline
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 18, 2017 -> 09:17 AM) Totally agree. I really see 2018 being our bottom, not 17. 2017 and 2018 are going to be rough, rebuilding seasons By 2019 we should be trending in the right direction, even if still a losing team We obviously need additional position player talent that will need to come in via the draft, as well as shrewd trades Quintana / Robertson / Jones / Abreu are our remaining trade chips that could bring a significant return I can't see us getting much back in exchange for Melky, Frazier or Lawrie at this point
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 20, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) Bullpen additions can be made midseason though, as evidenced by the Cubs and Indians last year. I think they are perfectly reasonable going to into the year with what they have. Ideally, Robertson kills it in the first half and increases his value. That pen needs more than one quality addition before it is ready for a playoff run Sure, the Nats can rely on in season trades to bring in talent, but those almost always end up being expensive. Their farm system is not what it was prior to the Eaton trade either. Robles, Fedde and Soto top it, but not a ton beyond them that can land a quality reliever midseason
  12. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Feb 20, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) Mike Rizzo told us the Nats closer will come from Shawn Kelley, Blake Treinin or Koda Glover #Nationals https://twitter.com/JimBowden_ESPN/status/833696679266222081 That pen is definitely not strong enough to win in the playoffs, or regular season for that matter Washington is a very top heavy team, quality starters and regular position players, but questionable bullpen and bench
  13. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Feb 20, 2017 -> 09:16 AM) Rizzo told us that they have NOT had trade conversations for a closer in “quite sometime”. They think answer is in camp.@SiriusXMFantasy https://twitter.com/JimBowden_ESPN/status/833695541699760132 There were tons of Robertson to the Nats rumors about a week ago, so not sure what that is all about The Nationals can roll with Kelley, who is a quality reliever, as closer. There is significant risk for a team with World Series aspirations having such an unproven bullpen outside of Kelley and Trienen though
  14. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Feb 18, 2017 -> 07:22 PM) I'm all for making that argument to whoever the Owner was that vetoed the prospective trade ! Hahn mentioned (in the interview with Chuck Garfein at CSN) that the return package in that proposed deal was constructed similar to the deal for Sale. We can't be sure exactly what he meant, but it sounds like it may have been a deal that was centered around a very highly rated prospect. That is also the impression I git from his other comments in that interview. It had to be the Pirates and Yankees three way trade. Yankees ownership backed out last minute on Xmas Eve. I'll bet it was something like: Pirates get Quintana Yankees get Cutch Sox get Glasnow + Frazier + significantly more
  15. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 17, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Hopeful draft pick spots: 2017: #11 obviously 2018: Top 3 (if everything goes right, #1) 2019: Top 6 or 7? 2020: 10-15 range, inching closer Obviously if we end up becoming good enough for contention sooner, than even better. But yeah, I'm expecting at least 3 bad/mediocre seasons. Guys gotta get through some growing pains. Not everyone will just come up and click right away. If by 2020 we are not at least a .500 team then the rebuild has not been done the right way 2017 and 2018 are total write offs, likely 2019 we should be seeing some progress, 2020 we need to be .500 or better Your estimates are reasonable, but we all should hope they turn out better than that
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 17, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) It would really take a miracle for this team to be anywhere close to contention, and even if it was a collapse would be right around the corner. This team just doesn't have the horses for 162 games. Fans need to be prepared for three rough seasons, but with 2020-2023 behind our prime window to contend 2017 = awful 2018 = subpar, but slight improvement 2019 = on the right track, ideally get back to .500 2020-2023 contenders
  17. QUOTE (Wanne @ Feb 17, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) My Dad and I...doing our usual State of the Sox talk before spring training...I brought up that fact how Hansen continually gets overlooked as a top prospect. Probably one of the bigger steals of any drafts that I can recall recently given where he was taken. I agree with jerksticks somewhat...that he's soon to be a Top 10 spec. Guy is just too good to live in anonymity... For Hansen to be a top 10 mlb prospect he would have to seriously sharpen his command and control, plus stay healthy this season 157 innings, 1.94 ERA, 40 BB, 185 K's across high A and lots of AA would likely skyrocket him up the rankings His control would need to develop from 40/45 grad to 55 grade in order for that to happen
  18. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 04:59 PM) The thought is that the Pirates budget is maxed out and they need to move payroll before bringing on Q's salary. They can also use the prospects to throw in a Q deal as a Cutch trade takes Meadows out of play. Pirates deal is dead not because of money, but because the Sox are insisting that Meadows be in any deal. Pittsburgh is unwilling to include him
  19. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 12:12 PM) So stoked for this guy. I think the Sox got him for an absolute steal and it would be great if he had a season similar to last year. My predictions - 9-4, 2.98 ERA, 134.2 IP, 40 BB's, 145 K's, 1.17 WHIP, and 9.7 K/9 in 20 starts, most of which at Kannapolis but hopefully he gets promoted to Winston-Salem at some point too. If Hansen lowers his walk rate to 2.67 BB/9 as you suggest, he would definitely be a top 100 prospect I doubt he is able to improve his control that much, but I could see him tossing 145 innings, 11-6 record, 54 walks, 159 k's, 3.14 ERA
  20. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 11:29 PM) Cubs are planning on using Schwarber in LF (LOL) and as an emergency catcher behind Contreras and Montero. I don't think the Cubs need to make any trades but after seeing Schwarber boot some balls in ST they might conclude that the best thing for Schwarber's career is to trade him to an AL club. I'd like to see the Sox make a pitch for him if things turn in that direction. Schwarber in the outfield will be ugly. He is a classic American League 1B/DH. Catching is out of the question, and he is a liability in the outfield. I think it would be hard for the Cubs to trade such a valuable bat at this point in his career though.
  21. QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 10:52 AM) One list doesn't have Guererro/Clark, the other has them above Collins. Weird. People just trying to make their stakes. Agreed That might be the most glowing report on Basabe that I have seen Collins is absolutely a better prospect at this point due to the potential for plus hit tool and plus power, even despite defensive concerns
  22. QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 08:05 AM) Weird. They've had a rocky existence thus far, after a bit of hype. This list is considerably different than most others we have seen It is higher on players like Basabe, Lopez and Adams and is lower on Collins, Giolito
  23. QUOTE (ChiSox1917 @ Feb 14, 2017 -> 05:06 PM) Doubt HR's approaching it from the perspective of team control Even still, there's not much argument that Moncada is talented enough to be at the mlb level right away. The problem is that he is not a finished product and could really benefit from spending time at the AAA level in 2017. Calling him up too soon immediately puts a lot of pressure on him to perform and be a franchise player Let him focus on defense, having quality at bats, and developing at his own pace. Eventually he will force his way onto the mlb roster
  24. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 07:26 AM) It's cool but he still doesn't account for the fact that they can't get on base. Yup While the organization has clearly taken a new focus on drafting players that have shown the ability to get on base (Collins, Fisher, Call). Players at the mlb level still need quite a bit of work in this regard.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 07:51 AM) On the Garfien podcast, one of the bloggers said KW told him they had an eye-popping deal fall through at the very end of the process during the offseason The Q to the Pirates with the Yankees in a three way trade fell apart at the ownership level I think the Sox would have gotten a massive haul back, but the Yankees backed out
