Just for fun, what would the cost be in trade assets for Lindor?
99.9% chance Stinky Bob is full of crap

To me, this tells me they are not going for a 2nd high end guy. Maybe another swing man, but nothing else.
Giollito
Lopez
Kopech
Cease
Gonzales
That will be the opening day rotation and maybe a swing guy for Kopech if he's not ready.
Kopech absolutely will pitch at least a month or two in AAA Charlotte. I think the Sox look to add another starter either via trade or Ryu/Keuchel.
Kopech can be brought along when he shows he's ready

Better than Hector Santiago I suppose.
He's way better than Santiago
Gonzalez has had a really underrated career, with over 32 WAR (fangraphs). There's still upside to this signing that many might not realize.

Curious to hear the dollars. Guessing $3-5M range.
One year deal for $3-5 million I'd guess as well. Low risk deal, and I think he still has some gas left in the tank.
Hard for anyone to dislike this move as long as we look to add a higher quality option(s).

His FIP's the last three years:
4.04, 4.16, 3.93.
He's actually fine as the second acquisition. I would have preferred a higher ceiling younger guy, but I get banking on the safer veteran to fill a hole for a few months.
We could do far worse from a hopefully fifth starter
I like the move, as Gonzalez is probably the best backend starter still on the market and gives us a left hander in the rotation. Should not be more than a reasonable one year deal.

Sox should offer 4/72 for Ryu. I think that might get it done.
I'm not sure I see Ryu getting four guaranteed years given the extensive injury history. I think he will get a nice three year deal and remain west.
Keuchel should be our target on a three year agreement

What else red sox can thrown in in the deal so hahn will trade Vaughn?maybe a 2nd so?or a good reliever?
The Sox are not throwing Vaughn into any deal sort of a cost controlled premium starting pitcher.

I wouldn't have a single qualm in the world with a 3/$54M deal for Keuchel. I just don't see it as super likely.
I do not see many clubs expressing interest in going four years on Keuchel. His market seems to be fairly slow, and I could see him taking a lesser deal.

It seems like everyone has a problem with every option out there.
Lets recap:
Kuechel- Not good, not worth the money
Price- Expensive, not good
Ryu- Injury prone, no thanks
Trading prospects for someone better? No way! You have to hold on to Madrigal AND Vaughn
All aboard the Covey train, i guess
Just now, wegner said:3 years for 54 million for Dallas. Like has been said before, he is a ground ball pitcher and a veteran presence. Both of those things will work for the Sox and that contract will not cripple them with their $$ situation.
I'm on board with three years for Keuchel around $15 million AAV. That is fair for the player and club.
Talk of 4/$80 million is crazy town, no team is paying that.

Pro's
White Sox would get money back for taking his contract, which is $17 million for 2020
His 2.9 and 3.0 fWAR was followed up by just 1.3 in 2019, so getting him into AL Central and out of East...potential rebound candidate
Limited contract, expires in 2020
Gives veteran stability to the back end of the rotation, LH-edness without overpaying Keuchel/Ryu
Northwestern grad, local ties
Durable, not a fireballer...variation on young rotation guys in terms of stuff
Gets another $17 million contract with 2021 with 165 IP and 27 starts if he overachieves or bounces back to 2017/18 levels of performance (Yankees would have to agree to kick in $5-6 million?)
Wouldn't cost any major prospects...
Con's
Age, 37
The fact that this could be an irreversible decline at the end of his career after being productive through age 37
The fact that saving the Yankees money on Happ means they can reinvest it into Severino/Paxton/Tanaka (the latter two are free agents at the end of this season)
Would have to get some money back from the Yankees to offset his salary...based on subpar 2019 performance...how willing would the Yankees actually be to do this?
In general, bailing out the Yankees on this deal could make them a stronger competitor for the Sox down the line (of course, just getting to the playoffs would be a major accomplishment for Sox, too early to think about W.S. or the Yankees being stronger)
Still far more preferable than gambling on David Price's health over a 3 year contract
I'd rather role the dice on Gio Gonzalez one a cheap, one year deal. If he bounces back he could help solidify the back end of our rotation.

Eno Sarris had a good article on the Athletic today about what some teams should do with their biggest needs. One of the teams he highlighted was our White Sox. He also says that the Sox are a climbing team and has them at 17...I am guessing those are his rankings of teams? He calls that impressive considering how poor the White Sox SP staff is.
Here is a snippet of what he thinks we should do:
The moves:
- Sign SP Dallas Keuchel to a four-year, $80 million contract
- Sign SP Gio González to a one-year, $5 million contract
He says the Twins should sign Rich Hill & trade for Jon Gray and Murphy. Four years seems like a LOT to me, but I guess it is the price of playing poker? Better than trading for Price in my book.
I can't see Keuchel getting $20 million AAV, while Bumgarner received only $17 million
A three year deal would be ideal, I'm not sure what other teams are serious about Keuchel?
Gonzalez as a fifth starter I would not hate at all. He's had a really solid career, and likely would not be expensive on a one year deal.
Ink Taijuan Walker or Felix Hernandez to a minor league deal for depth?

Nah it's worse, Price has so much negative value that it's more like Vaughn and Madrigal for nothing. fwiw I wouldn't do Vaughn for Beni either.
I would not trade six controlled seasons of Vaughn for three seasons of Benintendi arbitration control.
Just pay a guy like Ozuna for only money, WTF

Also, I am going to start the drum beat for Springer now. Pretty affordable, useful bat, and would play stellar D in RF for years. You can slide him to CF when Robert needs a day off. Mazara as a 4th OF vs RHP. Eloy/Robert/Springer/Mazara vs RHP is a fantastic and balanced OF.
How is Springer going to be affordable? He will hit free agency at age 31, and likely be ticketed for a lucrative 6 year deal. Cheaper than Betts? Sure, but still expect it to be at least 6/$150 million

I used to draft him every Franchise season of 2013 and 2014 of MLB The Show because he was an A prospect and flip him for like prime Tulo. He was garbage to pitch with.
Teheran or Nova are far from flashy, but might be exactly what this rotation needs as a #5 to go out and eat innings.
That or a Homer Bailey, or Alex Wood?

Not really. Odoroizzi and Berrios. Pineda suspended for 40 games. Graterol coming off a 61 inning season, never thrown more than 102 innings in a season.
They're arguably in a worse spot than the Sox.
Twins and White Sox are both in desperate need of pitching, with a limited supply remaining.

Here’s the problem. You can’t win the AL pennant against teams built like the Astros, Red Sox, and Yankees by fielding 5 average MLB starting pitchers. If they aren’t going to sign a bona fide #1 or #2 from outside the organization then you need at least two of Giolito, Kopech, Cease, Lopez etc to emerge and remain consistent top of rotation starters AND the rest to be solid mid to back of rotation starters. This is a plan destined for failure.
Other than KC, I can’t think of a single World Series team over the past decade that didn’t have at least two studs at the top of the rotation and good depth beyond that.
This entire rebuild only goes as far as Giolito/Kopech/Lopez/Cease/Dunning/Stiever will take us. Sure, we can and will add outside talent, but our farm is thin and pretty top heavy.
Is trading Madrigal/Cease/Vaughn really in our best long term interest right now? Likely not.

There are definitely plenty of things to be upset about this off season.
No idea why the Sox would not entertain signing Taijuan Walker to a minor league deal? There is a pretty clear potential path towards getting a shot on the MLB club in a relief/swing role. Zero risk move, and I am not sure I see any team risking a MLB deal with him.

Alright, as of today, here is my Plan B:
- Sign one of the following: Ryu or Keuchel
- Sign one of the following: Teheran, Wood, Bailey
- Sign Castellanos
Most people won't like the Castellanos move, but if he stays on the market for a while and can be had at a reasonable price, I think he can be a nice fit paired with Mazara at RF and DH. I'm not sure what we'd do with Collins in that scenario, though. Maybe he goes to AAA or maybe he gets traded.
Castellanos ideal value would be at DH, and I do not think we are ready to commit that sort of money to a DH/platoon RF. His atrocious defense negates some of his bat's value.

I don’t know...maybe Wood? Teheran? Bailey?
We might have just not liked Miley at all.
Like I’ve been saying for a couple weeks now...just wait until the offseason is over before complaining about each and every move. We could sign Keuchel and Wood still and nobody would think twice about this Miley deal.
Sox might be wise to grab Wood/Teheran/Bailey/Gio/Nova/etc soon something they do not seem desperate in a trade. At least they will have acquired one starting option, lessening the pressure a little bit?

Just offer him 5/$100M. Front load it so we’re not paying much in years four and five: 24, 24, 24, 14, 14
Do front loaded deals like that even exist? Or will he never accept that because he might as well just take a 3 year deal with the assumption that he can beat those last two years with another contract?
5 years for Ryu is a disaster waiting to happen. Yuck.
