  1. By free up cash, I mean we could potentially allocate the $15 million or so an Abreu extension might cost to other player(s). I love what Abreu has brought to the organization, but I do not love the idea of paying retail to an aging slugger. The fanbase needs to be prepared for the front office to not be emotional about Abreu and to go in a different direction. His production has declined, and I wouldn't give him more than a one year deal at this stage.
  2. Absolutely not. The Sox are not going to sniff the playoffs in 2019, why would they burn a season of contractual control? Robert will be up with the mlb club mid-late April 2020.
  3. I do not see how McCann can be dealt. Who is going to catch in 2020? McCann has to stay.
  4. If I am the Dodgers, I would not be all that keen on trading May. He's their best pitching prospect and is close to MLB ready.
  5. The Sox are not a good team in 2019, and every move should be done with a focus on 2021 contention at this point. 2020 is still unlikely to be a realistic contention season, so guys like Colome/Bummer should be sold to the highest bidder. I even question whether it's worth it to extend Abreu, or should they free up that cash for other talent?
  6. Not true at all, deal Colome and Bummer to the highest bidder and move on. I can guarantee you the Sox regret not dealing Fry last season. You aren't getting a king's ransom for two non elite relievers, but you could get a return that makes you better.
  7. Feels light for the Sox, but I'm not going to overvalue our guys too much. I dig Gray, but if Bummer is going in the deal as well I'd like May as a centerpiece. Gray is certainly a rising prospect himself though that I am interested in. Thomas has some pop, but the hit tool seems fringy at best
  8. If The Braves were going to trade Waters, it would be part of a package for a mid rotation or better starting pitcher, not a pen arm like Bummer. Expectations are way out of whack right now I feel
  9. Highly doubt either the Braves or Cardinals would do that
  10. No way the Rays deal Jesus Sanchez for Aaron Bummer. I think we need to reconsider the trade value of Colome and Bummer big time. There is value between them, but not a top 50 guy.
  11. Really depends on the deal as a whole, team needs, money and the prospect(s) involved. Theoretically the Sox should receive a quality return in order to consider dealing a package of Colome/Bummer. My guess on a potential return would be a top 50 - 125 overall prospect type as the centerpiece that is relatively close to MLB ready, along with one or two second tier prospect(s)?
  12. This seems to echo exactly what I have been suggesting, a one to two year deal possibly with a club option for another season? I really think the fans calling for a three or four year extension are going to be surprised when the Sox won't go more than short term.
  13. 1) Vaughn is not eligible to be traded until after the world series 2) Why the heck would we trade Vaughn, who was one of the best hitters in college baseball? Vaughn is arguably the best 1B prospect in baseball right now. 3) Abreu is going to be 33 years old next year and is likely due to decline. I highly doubt he would get a three year deal from anyone on the open market. I would not go beyond a two year deal with club option on him. 4) Gavin Sheet has had a nice June/July, but he's still far from me considering him for a MLB roster spot. He has hit righties pretty well, but a .632 season OPS against lefties should give pause before considering him as more than a potential platoon player.
  14. Bingo. It's not about the money per se, but rather the additional season of contractual control. Another season of Robert control becomes a potential future asset that should not be wasted on a non contention season. Sure, he will probably maul AAA pitching, especially with the juiced ball, but it will still aid his development regardless to see more experienced pitching. Robert will be up mid-late April 2020, until then just sit back and enjoy the fireworks in AAA.
  15. A Colome/Bummer package could certainly be enticing to contenders. Sox would need some serious value in return to pull the trigger on that though.
  16. No chance the Dodgers would do that deal
  17. I do not see how the Sox could even consider trading McCann at this point, who else do we have in the organization to catch?
  18. Sox will approach things the same way as they did with Eloy, likely inquire about a similar extension and say he can be on the opening day roster, or decline an extension and be called up mid-late April once the additional year of control is gained. Calling up a prospect like Robert now would be foolish under current rules. The additional season of prime control is too valuable to give up at this point in a non-contention season. Nobody will convince me otherwise.
  19. I'm shocked so many are giving up on Collins after a few mlb games. He should be sent back to AAA to get regular at bats, but he could still turn out to be a solid player.
  20. Reed is literally a zero risk move for the White Sox to test out at this point. I'm not sure how fans can view this as anything but a positive. If he sucks we can easily cut him, and if he's good well then great news. For Reed this is probably his final MLB opportunity to show he can stick, hopefully he makes the most of it.
  21. The extension suggestions I see being thrown around online are crazy to me. Abreu is a quality veteran, but I am leery of extending him beyond another season or two. Sox hold leverage, as I do not think Abreu would get more than two years on the open market.
  22. I agree that the extension numbers being thrown around are crazy for a half season of good production. Sox absolutely can be patient as McCann is still under arbitration control next season, plenty of time to evaluate.
  23. Perfect storm would be Reed becomes JD Martinez 2.0 Small chance of it happening, but again this is a zero risk pick up
  24. The more I think about it, the Sox very well might go down the qualifying offer road with Abreu. There just is not reason to go beyond a two year deal for around $25 million at this point. Paying retail for an aging slugger would be a mistake.
  25. I love Abreu, but I do not think it would be wise to extend him beyond two more seasons. He does not walk much, and if the average dips much below .260 he becomes a near replacement level player. Hahn should hopefully be too smart to pay retail for an aging slugger. Abreu has value to this club, but I cannot get on board for anything beyond a two year offer, perhaps with a club option?
