I'm there with you on this^ Sox are not going to be in on the big fish like Rendon/Cole They will need to address backup catcher, utility infielder, starting RF, possibly 1B/DH, minimum one starting pitcher, a pen arm or two I'd be totally good with Castro as a backup C, an infielder like Schoop/Gennett, Marcell Ozuna for RF, Abreu back on a one year deal (no longer), Odorizzi plus a couple pen arms. It might not result in an overly sexy offseason, but something like this would improve our chances to contend in 2020. Add to the above Kopech/Robert/Madrigal, and you can see the makings of a wild card roster. Mike Moustakas is another guy the Sox might be interested in?

Gerrit Cole - The Rebuild’s Fulcrum

McCann will certainly get a chance next year to prove himself worthy of a longer term deal. At this point the Sox still control him via arbitration, so I'm not concerned. I really really do not see Cole to the Sox being realistic. -
Stiever is a guy that really seems to have opened some eyes, especially his performance since being promoted to Winston Salem. I think he might have sneaky #4/5 starter potential moving forward. He should start 2020 in AA, if not sooner.

Gerrit Cole - The Rebuild’s Fulcrum
steveno89 replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I really do not expect the White Sox to be serious suitors for Cole. I'd look for the Sox to be active with the second/third tier of available FA starting pitchers. A guy like Odorizzi might make sense and would cost a ton less? -
Not at this rate. Some will cry owner's are being cheap, but the reality is that it would be bad business to sacrifice a year in what is likely Robert's prime for a few meaningless at bats in the lost 2019 season. Robert will be up spring 2020, just enjoy the ride.

Colome remains with White Sox, who always had ample interest in him

Yikes that is a really high asking price. Lux is not getting moved, he's a top 20 prospect in the game right now. May is not far behind that either. Gray is a guy they could potentially deal, who should appear as a backend top 100 prospect on updated lists. -
Sox will likely inquire about a potential extension in the offseason, and if Robert's camp isn't interested then the Sox say screw it and secure seven years of control. I'm not worried about what happens after seven more years at this stage, just secure the extra year.
-
By free up cash, I mean we could potentially allocate the $15 million or so an Abreu extension might cost to other player(s). I love what Abreu has brought to the organization, but I do not love the idea of paying retail to an aging slugger. The fanbase needs to be prepared for the front office to not be emotional about Abreu and to go in a different direction. His production has declined, and I wouldn't give him more than a one year deal at this stage.
-
Absolutely not. The Sox are not going to sniff the playoffs in 2019, why would they burn a season of contractual control? Robert will be up with the mlb club mid-late April 2020.

I do not see how McCann can be dealt. Who is going to catch in 2020? McCann has to stay.

If I am the Dodgers, I would not be all that keen on trading May. He's their best pitching prospect and is close to MLB ready. -
The Sox are not a good team in 2019, and every move should be done with a focus on 2021 contention at this point. 2020 is still unlikely to be a realistic contention season, so guys like Colome/Bummer should be sold to the highest bidder. I even question whether it's worth it to extend Abreu, or should they free up that cash for other talent?
-
Not true at all, deal Colome and Bummer to the highest bidder and move on. I can guarantee you the Sox regret not dealing Fry last season. You aren't getting a king's ransom for two non elite relievers, but you could get a return that makes you better.

Feels light for the Sox, but I'm not going to overvalue our guys too much. I dig Gray, but if Bummer is going in the deal as well I'd like May as a centerpiece. Gray is certainly a rising prospect himself though that I am interested in. Thomas has some pop, but the hit tool seems fringy at best -
If The Braves were going to trade Waters, it would be part of a package for a mid rotation or better starting pitcher, not a pen arm like Bummer. Expectations are way out of whack right now I feel
-
Highly doubt either the Braves or Cardinals would do that
-
No way the Rays deal Jesus Sanchez for Aaron Bummer. I think we need to reconsider the trade value of Colome and Bummer big time. There is value between them, but not a top 50 guy.

Really depends on the deal as a whole, team needs, money and the prospect(s) involved. Theoretically the Sox should receive a quality return in order to consider dealing a package of Colome/Bummer. My guess on a potential return would be a top 50 - 125 overall prospect type as the centerpiece that is relatively close to MLB ready, along with one or two second tier prospect(s)? -
This seems to echo exactly what I have been suggesting, a one to two year deal possibly with a club option for another season? I really think the fans calling for a three or four year extension are going to be surprised when the Sox won't go more than short term.
-
1) Vaughn is not eligible to be traded until after the world series 2) Why the heck would we trade Vaughn, who was one of the best hitters in college baseball? Vaughn is arguably the best 1B prospect in baseball right now. 3) Abreu is going to be 33 years old next year and is likely due to decline. I highly doubt he would get a three year deal from anyone on the open market. I would not go beyond a two year deal with club option on him. 4) Gavin Sheet has had a nice June/July, but he's still far from me considering him for a MLB roster spot. He has hit righties pretty well, but a .632 season OPS against lefties should give pause before considering him as more than a potential platoon player.
-
Bingo. It's not about the money per se, but rather the additional season of contractual control. Another season of Robert control becomes a potential future asset that should not be wasted on a non contention season. Sure, he will probably maul AAA pitching, especially with the juiced ball, but it will still aid his development regardless to see more experienced pitching. Robert will be up mid-late April 2020, until then just sit back and enjoy the fireworks in AAA.

A Colome/Bummer package could certainly be enticing to contenders. Sox would need some serious value in return to pull the trigger on that though. -
No chance the Dodgers would do that deal
-
I do not see how the Sox could even consider trading McCann at this point, who else do we have in the organization to catch?

Luis Robert kills it in his first game in AAA
steveno89 replied to knightni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sox will approach things the same way as they did with Eloy, likely inquire about a similar extension and say he can be on the opening day roster, or decline an extension and be called up mid-late April once the additional year of control is gained. Calling up a prospect like Robert now would be foolish under current rules. The additional season of prime control is too valuable to give up at this point in a non-contention season. Nobody will convince me otherwise.
