Sox claim 1b A.J. Reed off waivers AND send him to majors
steveno89 replied to smalls2598's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Not sure how it would be remotely feasible to trade McCann at this point. What other options for catcher do we have moving forward that would be even close to what he has given us so far in 2019? McCann is absolutely staying for 2020 at a minimum at this point. I doubt the Sox deal Abreu, especially since they are still somewhat in wild card contention. If they were going to deal him they would have already I feel. This move was a simple way to add depth. Reed was a former top prospect who might benefit from a change of scenery. If he does well I wouldn't rule out the Sox giving him some at bats in the majors down the stretch? If he sucks you cut bait, zero risk. -

Sox fans wanted Martes + Tucker + Reed/Stubbs for Quintana. In retrospect we should be extremely happy we have Eloy/Cease instead. Tucker could still pan out, but Martes/Reed have little value right now. -
Andrew Vaughn debuts as #9 mlb prospect (prospectslive)
steveno89 replied to Steve9347's topic in FutureSox Board
Exactly^ This is in terms of fantasy, not necessarily real life. Madrigal would be considerably higher due to his above average defense at 2B. Vaughn likely starts out around #35 overall at MLB.com when the new rankings come out. The bat is for real and he could move quickly through the system. -
A realistic expectation for a guy like Madrigal would be a batting average around .300, .350 OBP, plenty of doubles, 20+ steals, quality baserunning and excellent defense. While he might not have the 6+ WAR ceiling of certain prospects, I feel Madrigal can consistently become a 3-5 WAR player, a very valuable piece to have. The plus defense at second base could be worth 1-2 WAR on its own.

Sox should be looking to contend in 2020 given they are "around" .500 in 2019 already. They should absolutely be players in free agency as they look to fill holes. Robert and Madrigal should both be pushing for the majors by May/June next season at this rate. Kopech should be ready to go, Cease will be up.
-
A young player like Robert will benefit from getting more reps and facing a variety of pitchers in the minors. Major league pitching is a completely different animal. Everyone has solid stuff and can get you out in a variety of ways. Luis is obviously talented, but there is no reason to have him up at the major league level after 50 AA games on a team not competing for the postseason. I wouldn't mind him seeing time in Charlotte for the final month of the year though.

Is is just me, or does it seem like the Sox have their head up their a$$ by only being connected to Yolbert Sanchez and little Tatis? I was expecting more with two years to prepare?

Colome remains with White Sox, who always had ample interest in him

Can't see the Sox moving McCann at this point since we really do not have much in the way of options outside of him within the organization beyond him. He has played well enough to consider extending. -

I just scoured all of the current contenders' farm systems and it's not really easy to find a trade fit at first glance. Cubs don't have the farm to get it done realistically Tampa does have the farm, but they are so penny pinching I wonder if they would want to take on Colome's contract? Plus they already had and traded him in the past. Minnesota - Division rival, tough to get a deal done with when the Sox will likely try to start competing in 2020 Yankees - Thin farm system, I don't really see a prospect fit for the Sox here. Texas - Thin farm, unexpected contention. I don't think they are a great fit. Houston - Whitley/Tucker/Alvarez aren't going anywhere, and surprisingly their farm is not as deep as it has been in recent years. Milwaukee - Possibly, but I don't love the prospects at the top of their system. Kiura isn't being dealt and their depth drops off substantially from there. Philedelphia - rebuilding and I doubt they feel close enough to make a costly trade. Ditto for Washington, Colorado, San Diego -

I highly doubt we would get a prospect of Waters' caliber, but you never know since the Braves are in contention -

There is a saying that goes "always be trading relievers" and I absolutely think the Sox should listen to what they can get for Colome in a trade. -

Agreed. Real contenders have a reliable bullpen that does not blow leads. -
Sanchez is reported to have 65 grade defense at SS by MLB.com, which is nothing to scoff. If a player like that develops the hit tool to be adequate you are looking at a regular or a utility player at minimum.
-
Even halfway decent starting pitching is very expensive to trade for. Every MLB club could use starting pitching depth. Cease will be up by August, and I don'[t blame the Sox for not rushing him to the majors just yet.

Praying this is sarcasm like I think it is?

Frazier has supposedly been very poor defensively in RF this season. That has to be a consideration in addition the the Yankees outfield logjam. I could see them trading Frazier + for a starter
-
Sox don't have all that much to trade that I would consider expendable at this point. Robert, Cease, Madrigal, Vaughn, Kopech are not going anywhere Dunning, Adolfo are coming off injury Rutherford, Basabe, Gonzalez all have had poor 2019 performance
-
If Madrigal is not objectively better than Yolmer Sanchez RIGHT NOW, then we never should have selected him in the top 5. I'm not saying he's ready or to call him up yet, but if he couldn't better Yolmer's numbers I'd be pissed.
-
Dawkins looks like he deserves to be bumped up to Winston Salem pretty soon, especially since he is 23 we should find out what we have in him
-
Sox should be aggressive in free agency to build a winner as soon as 2020
-
Yes, but I wouldn't expect Madrigal to be up until early 2020 once they gain the additional season of control. An advanced college bat like his should not need more than 1 1/2 seasons in the minors. May/June 2020 is what I'm calling for him. He may even see a little of Charlotte along with Robert to finish 2019 out
-
Vaughn might sign for a bit below slot, as he likely would have fallen to #5 if the Sox did not select him? Regardless he was the correct pick.
-
I'd be shocked if Dalquist did not sign. Teams contact player's agents prior to making draft selections in order to know what pricetag they have. Dalquist reportedly is asking for $2 million and Sox will get him inked.
-
Madrigal may very well force himself into a 2020 early callup. The tools outside of power, which could still come along, are rock solid and he could contribute as soon as next season.

A fair and balanced soliloquy about Jose Abreu, by ron
steveno89 replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
We obviously need to see how Abreu finishes the season, but the Sox should be far too smart to pay an aging Abreu anywhere close to market rate. Too soon to make a 2020 decision yet
