  1. Happy for Arenado to get his payday, a really good contract for him overall. This reinforces how big of a failure it was for the Sox to whiff on Machado, and likely Harper soon. The premium free agents are going to get the guaranteed years and payday, a club either needs to step up or sit out.
  2. Why wouldn't Arenado wait until free agency at this point? What is essentially a raise in 2019, plus a six year extension is not necessarily the best offer he could see I feel like.
  3. 1) RUTSCHMAN 2) VAUGHN 3) ABRAMS 4) WITT JR 5) JUNG 6) MISNER 7) STOTT 8 ) ALLAN 9) CARROLL 10) ESPINO
  4. That's the sense I am getting. Philly, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, maybe White Sox on the periphery? All seem to be bidding over $300 million for Harper on long term contracts at this point, because why the hell not?
  5. If the Sox would not guaranty Machado $300 million, no chance they guaranty Harper substantially more.
  6. How is it a defensible position to say losing out on Machado is anything less than a total failure by the organization? You are more than welcome to disagree, but it is beyond me to understand how this could be spun into anything short of a colossal miss at an opportune time. There is nothing to spin, the Sox flat out got their pocket's picked by San Diego and are searching for answers. Kicking the can into next year's free agency to improve the club is a complete unknown. The pressure on our home grown talent grows even more.
  7. There is no excuse to defend the organization after nothing less than complete failure in the pursuit of Machado. This team has shown an unwillingness to spend to improve the team, even with limited competition. All of this financial flexibility moving forward means little if they tap out when it comes time to pony up. They got cute thinking their offer was the best on the table and were badly burned by losing out on Machado. While the rebuild obviously does not hinge on one player, they missed a golden opportunity to add a premium talent. Pressure to become competitive again absolutely should be happening, as the rebuild should be turning the corner in 2019/2020 towards contention instead of tanking.
  8. I would be infuriated if the Sox did not secure the additional season of control at this point. It would be inexcusable from the club's perspective.
  9. Not with our current pitching staff it is not^ The Indians are still easily the best team in the AL Central right now
  10. No chance Harper takes a two year deal, it would be insane to pass on a huge payday
  11. This is hard core drinking the koolaid^ If Robert or Madrigal see the majors in 2019 I would have serious questions for this organization short of them having a MAJOR breakout season. Second half 2020 is far mroe realistic.
  12. In fairness to the Sox, the early meeting with Harper were moreso to sit down and get to know the player. I do agree that their interest was false unless they were willing to spend at least $300 million on either player. Boras is going to hold out until he gets a king's ransom for his client
  13. I would say less than 1% chance the Sox sign Harper at this point. With an estimated price tag of $350-360 million, there is no way the Sox go to that level of commitment. I'm not even sold that Harper is much better than a 3.5-4 WAR player moving forward?
  14. At the end of the day, Lozano did his job in getting Machado $300 million guaranteed. Teams were certainly nowhere near that a month or two ago, and he proved that holding out and waiting works for elite free agents. Harper will only benefit from Machado's camp holding out for $300.
  15. Not an innings eater, but could still be a solid buy low addition to the rotation?
  16. Not saying Harper would or would not be worth investing in at this point, but Hahn saying "the money will be spent..." and then hearing the Sox are out on Harper just completely sends the wrong message. At what point are they going to start delivering on what they promise? Several days later I still feel gutted about missing out on Machado. Huge wasted opportunity to acquire a 26 year old all star for only cash, not even a qualifying offer attached.
  17. I will agree with that. If a sticker price of 10/300 was not willing to be met prior to the offseason, then shame on the organization for being cheap when it counted. You cannot be a serious suitor if your top offer does not come close to what is being asked for.
  18. Kenny and Hahn did try, I'm not going to deny that. Jerry/Kenny/Hahn all thought their offer was the best on the table and they would get Machado largely on their own terms. The lack of urgency to realize the Padres could leapfrog them did not occur, and they are left with a mess on their hands. Sticker price of 10/300 was known all along, and it shouldn't be a shock that it was met on deal day
  19. I thought that, but regardless if Manny gets fat and awful now, signing him would have been the perfect addition to the rebuild. They simply were not aggressive enough and now are made to look like fools for coming up short. There are no prizes for second place in free agency. They are putting tremendous pressure on our prospects to carry the MLB team in the future with little support around them. Winning does not happen by accident, teams need to spend in order to get results. Not every signing will work out, but I can't fault an organization for trying their best. The Padres clearly wanted Machado more, and got their guy. Giving 10 years to ANY player will almost always turn out to be a mistake, but in this instance the Sox absolutely should have done it. The resulting PR nightmare is not one that the fanbase will soon forget. The narrative, unfair or not, of the organization being cheap will persist.
  20. Machado was right to take $300 guaranteed all day
  21. I don't blame Machado for taking the additional $50 million guaranteed in this case. What if his knees give out and he can't manage 550 at bats? Take the money all day
  22. Buckle up for a largely pointless 2019 White Sox season where the best we can hope for is no major injuries to key prospects
  23. Free agency is a simple game after all. Offer the biggest pile of guaranteed money to the player and 99% chance you end up signing said player. Nothing else really matters.
  24. Man, it's tough being a White Sox fan. When you look at it that way, wow it's been rough
  25. Sox are not serious bidders for Harper, as the Phillies really need him in order to contend. This offseason should go down as a wasted opportunity and a significant failure for the rebuild. Might as well tank and lock in another top 5 draft pick in 2019.
