QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) Or you are getting good value before Cease loses any chance to be considered a starter and Rutherford loses trade value if he continues his hitting struggles. Also don't know how Marlins feel about Blake as they have some former Yanks executives over there now I don't think the Sox organization would feel comfortable dealing away that much potential without giving it more time. Hansen very well has put himself into the conversation for being a top 50 overall prospect, Cease had a quality 2017 overall and could really shoot up rankings with a quality 2018. Rutherford could go either way, but the upside still exists that I would not deal him as a third piece in a deal. Even IF we magically acquired Machado and Yelich the White Sox would still not be a 2018 contender with our pitching staff. I would let prospects develop further and evaluate a potential deal like this next offseason.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 12:10 PM) Been thinking that if you really want to dream big about possible title contender in a few years, you could trade for Yelich now and then go after Machado next offseason. I wouldn't hesitate to see a package like Hansen, Cease and Rutherford for Yelich. Just to dream big, your 2019 lineup could be: - Yelich - Moncada - Machado - Abreu - Jimenez - Garcia - Castillo - Delmonico - Anderson I like the aggressiveness, but it's too soon for the Sox to blow up the rebuild like that^ I agree with Hahn that we will have a much better idea how good our prospects are in nine months and can better assess organizational needs. That could be a package we really regret parting with if Hansen continues do build on a strong 2017, Cease improves his command of his already strong stuff and if Rutherford bounces back to show the tools scouts really liked making him a first round draft pick.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...1212-story.html I'd be interested in a one year deal with a player like Chris Tillman depending on the price. He was terrible in 2017, but is only a year removed from being a solid starter.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 11:53 AM) The first offer is way too much IMO. If you’re willing to give up that much, might as well go after Yelich even if the cost is a little more. Agreed^ Some of these packages are way too much for a player with one year of control remaining, even in light of a possible extension. Players like Dunning and Cease have very real trade value, and guys like Fulmer/Anderson/Sheets should not be seen as players we can easily cast away.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 11:44 AM) Rumors that Travis Demeritte might go #1 to Detroit Sox should look at Demeritte as he can potentially play several positions including 3B, SS and 2B. The power is there if he can make offensive adjustments.
-
QUOTE (Quin @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 11:27 AM) Even with extension, highest I would go would be... Anderson, Fulmer, Cease and Sheets. Based on Stanton's return I'd probably end up actually offering Avi, Fulmer, Dunning if we could convince Machado to man third. He's coming with a massive literal price tag. Even that seems like backing up the truck^ We finally have started to build a solid farm system and we would turn around to gut that so quickly? I just do not see something like this happening
-
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 11:16 AM) Machado himself is unprecedented, you could sign him 10yr/320m and he would be 36 at the end of the deal. Pay him more the first few seasons when we have no payroll and offer him an opt out after 6 years. If the price is something like Anderson/Lopez/Fulmer/Dunning and you can get him to sign, you do it. I would absolutely not do that^ Why surrender 4 young players to sign a guy you can go after in free agency anyway next year?
-
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 09:46 AM) Phils would seek negotiating window if they could forge deal w: O’s on machado. They love machado, he knows their execs (MacPhail drafted him for Balt) and they have $. But asked if MM, 1 year from free agency, would grant negotiating window, person involved said: “probably not” https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/940945103857864705 So in theory would the deal depend on the team trading for Machado getting him to agree to an extension? That certainly would make things interesting if so

QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 05:23 PM) I really want Nestor Cortes with our first selection and then pick Jordan Guerrero with our second and send him back to the minors. I'm totally down for nabbing Cortes and giving him a shot in the bullpen. I'd like to be able to keep Guerrero somehow as well.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 09:01 AM) Boston and the White Sox aren't really a match but I wonder if they could be in a 3 way discussion of some kind. Oakland and Boston probably don't do this but this would make sense for Sox. Boston Gets: Jose Abreu Oakland Gets: Jackie Bradley Jr. White Sox Get: OF Austin Beck, LHP Jesus Luzardo, two low level flyers Not a terrible suggestion, but I think the Sox might try to target players closer to the majors than Beck is. I'd aim for a better return.

QUOTE (Username @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 06:01 PM) JBJ really screams Austin Jackson to me. The swing and miss profile, plus general hot and cold nature give him some serious long-term hitting risk. Plus, if his athleticism starts to slip at all, I’m not sure he can maintain his value without hitting markedly better. I know he’s only 27, but defense-first center fielders don’t exactly age well. Of course, guys like this also sometimes become George Springer. The problem is, he’s clearly not a natural hitter if you watch him. His swing is kind of clumsy and he seriously struggles with offspeed stuff. Every Red Sox fan I know can’t stand him, as he tends to beat up on bad pitching and disappear against anyone with good stuff. JBJ is a better defensive player than Springer, but Springer is a much better offensive player. They are both the same age and Springer is coming off back to back 5.0 WAR seasons. Hypothetically if both were free agents I would bet Springer would end up getting a significantly bigger contract.

QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 12:56 AM) It's the same principle of not trading within the division. Don't trade to Indians, Yanks, Red Sox, Houston, and LA. Everyone else I'm okay with. Abreu and Avi will both be good baseball players when we are contending, we just don't want to pay for age and possible fall back down to Earth. Why would we care who Abreu/Avi potentially got traded to? By the time we are in our window they will be free agents anyway. Why limit our trading partners?

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 03:21 AM) Someone at work asked me if I would take Rafael Devers for Abreu straight up. I thought it was an interesting question. I would strongly consider it if our scouts believe Devers can stick at third base. He's far less valuable if he cannot handle the position defensively and needs to move to 1B/DH. He is 6', 234 lbs and not exactly a model of fitness. That being said, I doubt Boston makes him available and I would certainly be interested if he was.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 05:43 PM) A 27 year old all star CF is getting either more years or way higher AAV. If you believe in the bat, then sure. Defense does not tend to age very well, and if you take away the plus defense I don't think his bat is good enough to be a corner regular. JBJ (2017) is essentially a major league average starting center fielder, which is a valuable player. I wouldn't see him getting over $100 million on the open market as roughly a 3 WAR player currently.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) Just curious: How much do you think JBJ would cost, if he were a free agent? Same question for Abreu. I'd guess 5/85 for JBJ and 5/100 for Abreu if each were a free agent right now
-
QUOTE (asindc @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:29 PM) Why should we be the team to take the risk on JBJ? We won't be. No reason to deal Abreu for a package involving JBJ

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:21 PM) Wasn't Judge hitting 2nd this year? I assume he would just stay there. Still nasty anyway you line them up. Not sure where Judge was batting, but they have a ton of outfield talent with Judge, Stanton, Ellsbury, Frazier, Hicks all under contract and Florial/Cave in the pipeline. No wonder the had no issues dealing Rutherford, Fowler and Mateo.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:07 PM) Yeah and I would honestly be shocked if Judge did that again. Everyone would be shocked if he was able to repeat 2017. He will have plenty of lineup protection, so who knows? This lineup is disgusting... 1. Brett Gardner, LF 2. Didi Gregorius, SS 3. Giancarlo Stanton, DH 4. Aaron Judge, RF 5. Gary Sanchez, C 6. Greg Bird, 1B 7. Aaron Hicks, CF 8. Gleyber Torres, 2B 9. Chase Headley, 3B

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:55 PM) I believe I through out a Severino/Judge/Mateo hypothetical and the general consensus was it was too light. If only we knew what those first two players would develop into just a year later. Not even the Yankees could have predicted the enormous year that Judge had. He always had great power potential, but my God he mashed this season. Severino had a breakout year, and Mateo righted the sip at the correct time for him to be part of the Gray deal.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) Bob NightengaleVerified account @BNightengale 52m52 minutes ago Stanton has no intention to opt out, agent Joel Wolfe says out of #Yankees deal What else is he supposed to say right now? "Yeah, I'm opting out after I smoke 60 home runs a year the next three seasons" Just to make sure to piss off the entire fanbase before he even gets there? I doubt he opts out, as he still has a full no trade clause right? He's set for life with that contract and will he really be paid more in three years?
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:44 PM) Same goes for about 20 other teams that actually made presentations. Everyone had to figure West Coast teams had a huge advantage. The Angels are a surprising winner, especially when the Astros have a stranglehold on that division moving forward.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) This is true as well. Lots of small-to-mid market NBA franchises who have had a ton of sustained success. Nearly impossible to have "sustained" success in the smaller markets in baseball (or with smaller payrolls). Baseball is becoming win during your 2-3 year window of opportunity, then rebuild because you won't be able to afford to keep your stars as they hit free agency if you are a medium or small market club. It is 100% about young, cheap cost controlled talent. For example the Astros are primed to be very good the next 2-3 years even if Keuchel leaves in free agency due to farm depth and having a ton of cost controlled talent on the roster. If they tweak the bullpen and trade for a quality starter watch out.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:04 PM) I am not saying Frazier sucks by any means, I understand he is young and can turn things around. Like others have stated he is a victim of the Stanton deal in that nearly any player will be cast away when the reigning NL MVP is made available. I just think there is considerable risk to him as a prospect who plays a corner outfield position. He's still an interesting young player, but the margin for error on corner outfielders is slim. Kyle GlaserVerified account @KyleAGlaser Following Following @KyleAGlaser More Cashman mentions Sale deal last year, that Severino, Sanchez, Bird were among names White Sox floated as the price. 1:47 PM - 11 Dec 2017 Wow, haha. Big ask.
