QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 09:46 AM) Phils would seek negotiating window if they could forge deal w: O’s on machado. They love machado, he knows their execs (MacPhail drafted him for Balt) and they have $. But asked if MM, 1 year from free agency, would grant negotiating window, person involved said: “probably not” https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/940945103857864705 So in theory would the deal depend on the team trading for Machado getting him to agree to an extension? That certainly would make things interesting if so

QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 05:23 PM) I really want Nestor Cortes with our first selection and then pick Jordan Guerrero with our second and send him back to the minors. I'm totally down for nabbing Cortes and giving him a shot in the bullpen. I'd like to be able to keep Guerrero somehow as well.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 09:01 AM) Boston and the White Sox aren't really a match but I wonder if they could be in a 3 way discussion of some kind. Oakland and Boston probably don't do this but this would make sense for Sox. Boston Gets: Jose Abreu Oakland Gets: Jackie Bradley Jr. White Sox Get: OF Austin Beck, LHP Jesus Luzardo, two low level flyers Not a terrible suggestion, but I think the Sox might try to target players closer to the majors than Beck is. I'd aim for a better return.

QUOTE (Username @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 06:01 PM) JBJ really screams Austin Jackson to me. The swing and miss profile, plus general hot and cold nature give him some serious long-term hitting risk. Plus, if his athleticism starts to slip at all, I’m not sure he can maintain his value without hitting markedly better. I know he’s only 27, but defense-first center fielders don’t exactly age well. Of course, guys like this also sometimes become George Springer. The problem is, he’s clearly not a natural hitter if you watch him. His swing is kind of clumsy and he seriously struggles with offspeed stuff. Every Red Sox fan I know can’t stand him, as he tends to beat up on bad pitching and disappear against anyone with good stuff. JBJ is a better defensive player than Springer, but Springer is a much better offensive player. They are both the same age and Springer is coming off back to back 5.0 WAR seasons. Hypothetically if both were free agents I would bet Springer would end up getting a significantly bigger contract.

QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 12:56 AM) It's the same principle of not trading within the division. Don't trade to Indians, Yanks, Red Sox, Houston, and LA. Everyone else I'm okay with. Abreu and Avi will both be good baseball players when we are contending, we just don't want to pay for age and possible fall back down to Earth. Why would we care who Abreu/Avi potentially got traded to? By the time we are in our window they will be free agents anyway. Why limit our trading partners?

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 03:21 AM) Someone at work asked me if I would take Rafael Devers for Abreu straight up. I thought it was an interesting question. I would strongly consider it if our scouts believe Devers can stick at third base. He's far less valuable if he cannot handle the position defensively and needs to move to 1B/DH. He is 6', 234 lbs and not exactly a model of fitness. That being said, I doubt Boston makes him available and I would certainly be interested if he was.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 05:43 PM) A 27 year old all star CF is getting either more years or way higher AAV. If you believe in the bat, then sure. Defense does not tend to age very well, and if you take away the plus defense I don't think his bat is good enough to be a corner regular. JBJ (2017) is essentially a major league average starting center fielder, which is a valuable player. I wouldn't see him getting over $100 million on the open market as roughly a 3 WAR player currently.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) Just curious: How much do you think JBJ would cost, if he were a free agent? Same question for Abreu. I'd guess 5/85 for JBJ and 5/100 for Abreu if each were a free agent right now

QUOTE (asindc @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:29 PM) Why should we be the team to take the risk on JBJ? We won't be. No reason to deal Abreu for a package involving JBJ

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:21 PM) Wasn't Judge hitting 2nd this year? I assume he would just stay there. Still nasty anyway you line them up. Not sure where Judge was batting, but they have a ton of outfield talent with Judge, Stanton, Ellsbury, Frazier, Hicks all under contract and Florial/Cave in the pipeline. No wonder the had no issues dealing Rutherford, Fowler and Mateo.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:07 PM) Yeah and I would honestly be shocked if Judge did that again. Everyone would be shocked if he was able to repeat 2017. He will have plenty of lineup protection, so who knows? This lineup is disgusting... 1. Brett Gardner, LF 2. Didi Gregorius, SS 3. Giancarlo Stanton, DH 4. Aaron Judge, RF 5. Gary Sanchez, C 6. Greg Bird, 1B 7. Aaron Hicks, CF 8. Gleyber Torres, 2B 9. Chase Headley, 3B

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:55 PM) I believe I through out a Severino/Judge/Mateo hypothetical and the general consensus was it was too light. If only we knew what those first two players would develop into just a year later. Not even the Yankees could have predicted the enormous year that Judge had. He always had great power potential, but my God he mashed this season. Severino had a breakout year, and Mateo righted the sip at the correct time for him to be part of the Gray deal.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) Bob NightengaleVerified account @BNightengale 52m52 minutes ago Stanton has no intention to opt out, agent Joel Wolfe says out of #Yankees deal What else is he supposed to say right now? "Yeah, I'm opting out after I smoke 60 home runs a year the next three seasons" Just to make sure to piss off the entire fanbase before he even gets there? I doubt he opts out, as he still has a full no trade clause right? He's set for life with that contract and will he really be paid more in three years?

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:44 PM) Same goes for about 20 other teams that actually made presentations. Everyone had to figure West Coast teams had a huge advantage. The Angels are a surprising winner, especially when the Astros have a stranglehold on that division moving forward.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) This is true as well. Lots of small-to-mid market NBA franchises who have had a ton of sustained success. Nearly impossible to have "sustained" success in the smaller markets in baseball (or with smaller payrolls). Baseball is becoming win during your 2-3 year window of opportunity, then rebuild because you won't be able to afford to keep your stars as they hit free agency if you are a medium or small market club. It is 100% about young, cheap cost controlled talent. For example the Astros are primed to be very good the next 2-3 years even if Keuchel leaves in free agency due to farm depth and having a ton of cost controlled talent on the roster. If they tweak the bullpen and trade for a quality starter watch out.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 03:04 PM) I am not saying Frazier sucks by any means, I understand he is young and can turn things around. Like others have stated he is a victim of the Stanton deal in that nearly any player will be cast away when the reigning NL MVP is made available. I just think there is considerable risk to him as a prospect who plays a corner outfield position. He's still an interesting young player, but the margin for error on corner outfielders is slim. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 01:22 PM) I think you're overreacting to Frazier's first taste of big league action. And while he no doubt has some swing & miss concerns, he never struck our at a ridiculous rate in the minors. I think you're sleeping on him quite a bit. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) First off, let me say that I don't think the Red Sox would give up much beyond JBJ for Abreu. I'm just saying that if I'm the White Sox that's the type of return I'd need to give up someone as valuable to our organization as Jose. Having said that, it's real easy to make an argument that JBJ is the more valuable asset. Even without improvement with the bat, he's got an extra year of team control and will be paid a helluva lot less than Jose. That doesn't even account for the fact that JBJ plays a premium position while 1B is loaded with options (albeit most of them lesser). I mean most of the analytics community thinks the Red Sox would be crazy to even do a 1 for 1 trade and that's with projection systems like Steamer predicting a partial bounce-back for JBJ. Despite all that, I'd still be hesitant to trade Abreu in a one for one deal. But give me that second piece like Chavis and suddenly I become more willing to disrupt my clubhouse and make a trade. Again, I don't see Boston doing this, although I've seen some Red Sox fans suggest they'd be ok with such a deal. Their window is quickly closing and a prospect like Chavis shouldn't stand in their way of making a significant upgrade to their lineup today. I guess we'll see how desperate DD is now that the Yankees have added Stanton and have more moves to come. I don't love the fit of JBJ as we would be banking on him bouncing back and then being able to deal him in the future for a prospect return. I just do not love the fit when moving Abreu.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 01:03 PM) Warrant any trade interest? I guarantee you most every team would be interested in Fulmer. For a top 30 prospect? Nah. But let's not act like the guy has no value. When I mean trade interest I mean for teams to be interested enough to offer something in the realm of what it would require for the Sox to move him. Obviously we are better off seeing what he can do at the mlb level starting and then in the bullpen if that does not work out than dealing him for nothing.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 12:42 PM) Rutherford for Frazier, who says no! Yankees say no

QUOTE (Scoots @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 12:19 PM) I apologize if this has been stated already, but here is part of what Renteria said on the score the other day regarding Abreu and Garcia... "I think their impact in our clubhouse on the other players is significant. They would require (in return) a whole lot of talent that would impact our organization as a whole for a long time to come. I think what they bring currently impacts us now and possibly into the future. They do that by the way they carry themselves and the way they prepare. They are a voice in that clubhouse. If we are going to develop a particular identity for ourselves as we continue to chip away, it’s important to have people like that who have grown up in this organization. They offer a lot both on and off of the field." I agree with Renteria here. It was obvious last season the comeraderie in the clubhouse was excellent, especially toward the end. I believe the health and chemistry of a clubhouse is just as important to the development of the potential elite young talent. Abreu and Garcia have already started developing those relationships with players and are solidifying themselves as leaders, which is what those young guys need. I think their mere presence in that clubhouse (as well as their potential to lead on the field as well) is leaps and bounds more important to the development of the future of this team than any prospects they might get back in return, or JBJ. I'm not saying clubhouse isn't important, it is. For the Sox we need to focus on building a future winner, which the 2018 and likely 2019 teams will not be. We are best served trying to move both Avi and Abreu to be fully stocked moving forward. With Abreu's contract off the books we will have another theoretical $20 million to offer free agents next offseason. Thankfully they adjusted the draft compensation penalty so teams can hang onto their first round draft pick.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 12:04 PM) There are only a handful (if that) of players I think they would trade Kopech or Hansen for and Clint Frazier is not close to being one of them. When the new top 100 rankings come out sometime in January I fully expect Hansen to take a pretty significant leap. The stuff is there and the control is improving. Frazier is overrated, and unless he's a plus defensive center fielder I don't think the bat will stick at a corner. Power potential is great, but only if you make enough contact to use it. Fangraphs was really down on his 2017 performance, rating him below replacement level offsensively, and -5.8 defensively...which is cause for concern. Buyer beware.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 11:28 AM) Didn’t he work with someone at the Future’s Game that helped him? Al Leiter I want to say? For Kopech to reach AAA at age 21 it is very impressive. He really cut down on the walks from mid July onward and showed overall development. The chance he sticks as a starter is much stronger now than it was at the start of the season. Personally I would let him spend the majority of this season at AAA to continue to build up his innings.
