QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:43 AM) https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/white-sox-b...-up-at-catcher/ I agree and see the Castillo deal as being a solid under the radar addition for the Sox. The money and years are small in the grand scheme of things, and presents an immediate upgrade over Kevan Smith.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 11:51 AM) Next week should be fun. I think so. I think the plan all along has been to tear the previous club down to build a cost controlled and talented young core. Then we supplement that core with key free agent additions to fill gaps. When envisioning our 2020+ proverbial contender I just have a suspicion that Avi/Abreu are not part of that picture for the front office. Abreu is a good clubhouse guy and leader, but I don't think we need to pay him $40 million or so over the next two seasons for him to babysit a 90+ loss team. Same goes for Avi.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/roya...or-rebuild.html On the positive side for them, they have I think 4 picks after the first round. Who can they realistically trade that has value though? Duffy? Perez? I would think they're rebuilding situation is a lot better than the Tigers. Royals rebuild does not have the same luxury of tradeable assets that the White Sox did (Sale/Eaton/Quintana) that brought us Moncada/Kopech/Basabe/Diaz, Giolito/Lopez/Dunning, and Jimenez/Cease/Rose/Flete. That is a tremendous amount of young talent for any farm system to build upon. Those deals allowed the Sox to quickly build up a strong farm system, something the Royals won't be able to do. Duffy could get them a few nice pieces, and maybe Salvador Perez, but beyond that there is not very valuable assets. The Royals should have started the rebuild a year ago and instead chose to go for it once more.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 11:30 AM) Yeah. And who knows, if he hits like last season and he isn't interested in an extension, maybe a team out there will buy into his success and be willing to give you what you want for him. I have the feeling that the front office would love to unload both Avi and Abreu during this offseason if possible. As a rebuilding club we really should be looking to deal assets not under long term control and be building our contender. Expensive extensions do not fit into what we are trying to do, and if Avi has a bad start to 2018 we lose whatever value we could have gotten for him. Abreu/Avi should have interest on the trade market since they are a much shorter commitment and lower cost than free agency. It comes down to admitting that 2019 is likely best seen as another rebuilding season, vs. a legitimate chance of contention.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:58 AM) This is something that would worry me about a long-term deal. He's a big guy who has always run hard. At some point, he won't be quick anymore. I still need to see about another half a season before I want to extend him. Any potential extension would have to be for at least 2 free agent years, plus a likely option year at this point to make sense for Avi. I'm just not sure I want to commit to him for that long just yet. The 2018/2019 free agent class is so loaded with talent, even if we miss out of the "top" free agents, the second and third tier still have a bunch of quality players. We would have to weigh the cost of Avi against free agents and our own farm. http://www.espn.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/...e-agent-bonanza

Ask FutureSox, Part 2 - more specifics on prospects
steveno89 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Here is Part 2 of the "Mail Bag" #AskFutureSox, this one less about overall trends and more drilled down to specific prospects. Talks about Rutherford, Robert, Cease, Clarkin, Kincanon, Diaz, Cooper and more. Deep dive here, but Kade McClure seems to be an interesting player that joined our system through the draft. a 6'7" , 235 lb right hander out of Louisville who put up solid numbers in his last two NCAA seasons and in the 2016 Cape Cod league. He seemingly dominated in his brief 13 pro innings since being drafted too. Might be an interesting name to watch moving forward, even if his stuff is not totally eye popping? Players that big generally struggle with control, but that does not seem to be the case with him. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:19 AM) In all aspects of life, not just sports. Lets be thankful that Ohtani is not signing with another team in the AL Central at least? Imagine if he landed with the Indians???

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 12:53 PM) Terrific move. I don't expect there to be many, if any, multi year signings this offseason for the Sox. This one makes sense and helps bring some solid stability to the catching position until ideally Collins/Zavala is ready. Castillo/Narvaez should be a solid tandem for the time being

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 10:06 PM) Interesting take from Jeff Sullivan from a Fangraphs chat today: I agree with Sullivan here. Stanton's contract is so long and not team friendly due to the opt out. Teams can deal for two seasons of Abreu and have a good idea of what they are getting in return, not the same case at all with Stanton's mega contract.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:16 AM) I'm okay knowing that he didn't choose the White Sox because he wanted to be with a team that had something we couldn't have -- like being on the West Coast, or having a better Japanese-American population. But it would really hurt knowing he was willing to choose Chicago despite all that, and that the Cubs simply beat us at pitching him. Because if he's considering the Padres, you know the contention window thing doesn't matter. The Cubs certainly offer a compelling situation, but looking at the rest of the teams remaining it seems likely that he selects a club on the west coast. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 05:48 PM) You sure like complaining about odd things. $1M for a guy like Farquhar to fill a spot in a rebuilding team’s depleted bullpen is normal course of business. We need someone to pitch innings and you’re not going to get anything much better for the price. It may be a boring move, but I don’t see how it warrants complaints. Agreed, we need bodies out there to eat innings during the rebuild. Farquhar is a serviceable middle reliever for 2018.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 05:19 PM) Even if they do take the next step, there are worse things than having a ton of depth (see dodgers). Catchers get injured, it's nice when you don't replace them with players lucky to hit mendoza line. Catching depth is vital, agreed I feel like catchers are very underpaid and undervalued for what the do for a team by fans. It's a brutal position to play each day. Castillo should bring some veteran stability to a position that needs it. Our young pitchers should hopefully benefit.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 05:13 PM) Real solid move by the organization. Guy threw out 44% of base runners and hit 20 home runs. Good call by Hahn. I especially like the 3rd year $8 million club option. If he performs well and we like him that probably gets picked up. Also pretty reasonable insurance in case Collins and Zavala don't take the next step.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 02:37 PM) This is one of the benefits to not having all of your prospects on the 40, we can cut one of the people we were shocked by leaving on and expose them to waivers without caring. I have no clue how a guy like Jacob May is still on the 40 man roster after his awful 2017. Time to send him adrift.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) If it's true that Hahn needs to be "overwhelmed, in order to trade Abreu," Flaherty and Sierra is hardly "overwhelming". I doubt Hahn needs to be truly overwhelmed. If Abreu was 26/27 years old with 3 or 4 years remaining on his contract then it would be a different story completely, but he's still a quality asset controlled for two seasons. He's valuable, but I would be astonished if a team parted with its very best prospects (depending on system of course) for him. The White Sox can ask for Devers, Benintendi, Rogers, etc. but they aren't getting those guys in exchange for Abreu. In order for any deal to actualize we need to start with a sky high price, and have the negotiations take us to a place where the price is still fairly high, but acceptable for the Abreu suitor. Abreu makes sense for the Astros, Cardinals, Rockies, Indians and Red Sox right now, just remains to be seen if they want to pay the price.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 12:49 PM) I do think we can compete in 2019, but that's beside the point- I value his leadership more than most, I suppose. It's not just an on the field issue to me. We've had major clubhouse issues over the years and he has been vital to maintaining it I'm all for veteran leadership, but not at a cost of $20 million per season on a losing team. Is there a chance we compete in 2019? Of course, but I would bet on us being a .500 team or less still. Our young players will go through growing pains as they enter the major leagues and we need to completely rebuild the bullpen. 2019 opening day roster C- Narvaez + ? 1B - possibly Abreu or ? 2B - Moncada SS - Beckham 3B - ? LF - Jimenez CF - ? RF - maybe Avi or ? DH - ? Bench? Rotation Rodon? Kopech Giolito Lopez Hansen? Dunning? Stephens? Adams? Fulmer? Bullpen???? The picture is too cloudy right now for us to determine what 2019 is going to look like. The next wave of prospects like Jimenez, Kopech, Collins, Hansen and Dunning should likely be up at the mlb level by 2019 at some point.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 12:19 PM) And that's exactly why it makes more sense to keep/extend him. The return isn't worth what we'd be losing. We are losing 90 games with or without Abreu in 2018, why not fully commit to tanking? Having the #1 or #2 overall draft pick in 2019 would not be a bad thing for our future when we aren't going to the playoffs anytime soon. Sox fans need to be prepared to admit that 2018 and 2019 could be ugly still as rotation questions get answered and we build a bullpen from the ground up.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 12:19 PM) And that's exactly why it makes more sense to keep/extend him. The return isn't worth what we'd be losing. Right now I have settled in the try to trade Abreu and Avi camp, although I could change my opinion. I just feel that a rebuilding club like ours should not be spending large amounts of money when we are going to likely not compete in 2018 and 2019 anyway. We need to stockpile as much young talent as possible and have complete payroll flexibility moving forward into our "window" from 2020-2024 theoretically. I love Abreu, but I get the feeling the organization would prefer to deal him for a solid return instead of an extension.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) That deal would really be a disappointment, for me. Very underwhelming. I'll bet that doesn't get it done. I think we need to be realistic and not expect a return on the levels of Sale/Eaton/Quintana. Abreu is a great middle of the order bat, but with only two seasons of control teams will not be willing to empty out the farm when they can sign a Hosmer or Santana for only cash. I would be shocked if the Sox were offered a top 40 overall in mlb prospect for two seasons of Abreu.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 11:49 AM) Yeah Magneuris Sierra is a leadoff profile with elite level defense in CF. Flaherty and Sierra would probably be a nice deal for Sox. I'd be interested in a Flaherty + Sierra + Oviedo for Abreu deal. The cost is reasonable for the impact a bat like Abreu's would have on the Cardinals. Flaherty would get a chance at a rotation spot right away in 2018, and Sierra would get a chance in CF. Oviedo would be young pitching depth with upside.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) Don't know if this was posted here, but Heyman said on the radio yesterday that the Cardinals and Rockies were the other teams who were talking Abreu with us Jason Martinez of mlbtraderumors had this to say: "Zamboni 5:44 Flaherty and Sierra get it done for the Cards for Abreu Jason Martinez 5:45 I'd say one of their top pitching prospects, one of their best OF prospects and maybe one low-level guy with high upside. So Flaherty/Sierra could be in the vicinity of what it would take."

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 10:44 AM) Only way I'm moving Abreu (who I hope isn't moved and is here for the long run) is in exchange for Groome, Chavis, and a third piece (not happening) Maybe it's just me, but I am not all that high on any of the Red Sox current prospects (not considering Devers a prospect anymore). Groome and Chavis each have significant bust risk, and many scouts seem to think Houck ends up in the bullpen. If I am dealing Abreu the offer would have to be very strong and make sense long term.
-
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 03:23 AM) Throwing some offers out there.... From Red Sox: 3B Michael Chavis (BOS #2, MLB #92), OF Cole Brannen (BOS #9), RHP Bryan Mata (BOS #14) From Rockies: 3B Colton Welker (COL #4), C Tom Murphy (COL #9), LHP Ben Bowden (COL #16) Both of those offers feel light for Abreu. I'd rather keep him if that was all that was on the table.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 30, 2017 -> 01:22 PM) I think you'd have to be willing to guarantee the fifth year. 5/$100mm is fair. I would not feel comfortable signing Abreu to a 5/100 extension right now, especially with him being on the wrong side of 30. He's a quality player, but why pay full retail now? The Sox are in a position where they absolutely should have a high asking price for him because it is only a two year guaranteed contract. Something around a 4 year/70 million deal with a 5th year team option could be doable. There's just not much incentive to pay more than that for him though. Sox are playing this the right way, listening in on Avi/Abreu but holding a high price.
