  1. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 08:01 AM) I'll be very surprised if they don't take a high school player. It's the strength of this draft class. Nick Hostetler has spoken at length about how they need to get younger and that he wants to add more high school talent to the system. He's actually said that he likes scouting HS players better because that was his original job as a scout. He mentioned it on 670, with Barstool Dave, and on our FutureSox podcast. I'm thinking the Sox look to a premium position high school player with #4 overall, although it's obviously early to tell. You don't reach when picking in the top 5, you need to end up with the best talent available.
  2. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 07:35 PM) I see your point, but I could counter with the Narvaez example someone used earlier. He's nowhere near the power threat Collins can be, yet his elite plate discipline has translated to solid offensive production at the MLB level. If Narvaez had a bit more pop he could be a starting caliber catching option. As he is right now he is a very solid backup on a good team.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) No way is it that high. The kid is 17. Given how valuable young talent is I think the bidding would reach $50+ million pretty easily. Every mlb club would have reason to get involved on such a promising player. The risk would be spread out over 6-7 years as well. Maitan has now played in the USA, so I don't think he could just be tossed back into the international free agent pool.
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 09:01 AM) The benefit to Maitan is it does not need to be the same bonus structure, so people could spread cost out more easily. There's just going to be very little constraints on teams. I couldn't even put a number on it. I'd say at very least we are past jose abreu territory. For a team like the White Sox that will not be able to spend much internationally the next few seasons, Maitan would be a very interesting investment. I could see the bidding from bigger clubs get to crazy levels in unrestricted free agency though, setting a bad precedent.
  5. QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 07:19 AM) Hahn should have received more in the Sale trade. Nothing against Kopech or Moncada, obviously. But, Hahn should have received four legitimate prospects. Basabe and Diaz are not on that category. Moncada and Kopech are both elite prospects. Who else was going to offer a better package than that? The rebuild has been as good as we could hope so far, minus dealing Tatis Jr. for Shields in what is looking like a big mistake. Lets hope we can recoup some of that lost value in the 2018 draft. I expect us to be active in the rule V draft coming up as well.
  6. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 08:58 PM) It will be a really interesting case study in how much the draft limits contract size if he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He's ranked lower and is younger and therefore more risky than Luis Robert, so it should be below the $25 mil he recieved, but it would probably be above the highest draft bonus. Wild guess, it would end up being around $10-12 mil. I think the bidding would end up getting much higher than $10-12 million if Maitan were declared a free agent. I'm thinking 30-60 million?
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) White Sox Talk‏Verified account @NBCSWhiteSox 42m42 minutes ago Avi never wants to leave: http://bit.ly/2x8wcWz I absolutely would explore Avi's trade market in the offseason, but would not be surprised if we decided to keep him. Sox won't unload him if the return isn't quality. 2018 should be the next step in the rebuild, and we can expect to go through more growing pains as we push talent up through our farm system. Players like Fulmer, Giolito, Lopez, Moncada, Delmonico, etc. will be given the opportunity to prove themselves on the mlb roster. Kopech and Jimenez are knocking on the door, followed by Dunning and Hansen. No chance of contending next year, but signs of improvement are likely. 2019 is when we start to really see this turn around ideally.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 29, 2017 -> 03:27 PM) Jimenez was one of my favorite prospects so I'm glad it worked out the way it did. But, I'm not writing off these guys yet as failed. Glasnow definitely looks like he may be a BP piece, however. Cubs deal with Jimenez and Cease + filler is far better than anything else that was offered for Quintana. Jimenez has all the looks of a future stud for us.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 03:11 PM) I think this is the earliest I've followed the next years draft and what was confusing to me was what has come out so far was just a lot of the players who were at the big showcases and some video, but very little commentary on how they were doing. I think I mistook the amount of video tweeted on a guy as a sign of them being the best, but likely was just a matter of availability. After another average wooden bat summer for Beer, I really wonder with even a big junior season if he does much better than Brent Rooker. Sox will end up with a quality prospect in what is shaping up to be a strong 2018 draft class. Right now there is not much consensus, but at the end of the day we will be adding another top guy to our farm system. Selecting top 5 you really do not want to miss on a potential impact talent.
  10. QUOTE (Soha @ Sep 25, 2017 -> 09:02 AM) My only regret really, is why did they release Holland? That might end up costing us a slot or two in the draft. I just don't see the reason for it. Otherwise, many of these unexpected wins come from the pleasant surprises of our young guns - so it's hard to be unhappy about it. We want to see the progress from guys like Giolito, Moncada, Delmonico, Lopez, etc. Also keep in mind - aren't they saying this draft is a little deeper at the very top than normal? Possibly 5 deep. Of course, if the Sox keep this up they could even slide down to #6 still. I'm pleased to see some of our younger players coming around, but it would be a shame to not finish this tank off properly the final week.
  11. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 11:19 PM) Nice point man. I like that you've outlined how it's not always as cut & dry as "gain extra year=smart" and "not gain extra year=dumb". The respect gained by letting him break camp if he's earned it could pay out tenfold in the long run (likeliness of extension due to goodwill increases dramatically) compared to the extra year of time. I still would be shocked if Kopech broke spring training with the mlb club and essentially skipped AAA. He still needs to work on control and limiting free passes, especially against more experienced AAA hitters.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 05:35 PM) And yet still two years young for current level. He doesn't need to make some giant leap, just needs to develop. Plenty of patience is OK here. A prep draftee playing A-ball in his second year and doing decent but not great is not a problem. For a decent prospect? Yes, but I have higher expectations with a prospect of Rutherford's pedigree. I understand it takes time to develop, but a corner outfielder will have to show more pop to make it in the majors.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 11:57 AM) He's in his first full pro season and a teenager in Low A, pretty unlikely. Rutherford needs to take a big step forward next year and really show us what he can do. He's a year older than most prospects drafted out of high school, so more production will be needed. Defensively he grades as average, so the bat must play for him to hold down a corner OF spot.
  14. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 02:11 PM) Nope. Really think they are gonna lose a year of control on him? Lip service. Exactly. Zero chance Kopech is on the opening day roster and the Sox burn a season of valuable control for 2-3 starts. Kopech just got promoted to AAA and is only 21 years old, why rush him to the majors before he is ready?
  15. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 02:23 PM) Nothing. Some guy threw out a guess that it's Tony Kemp but that's all. It wouldn't have to be Kemp as their current roster is at 40 including Clippard. I think it was just speculation.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:15 PM) He only has about 3 starts, maybe 4 at the most this year anyway. My guess is he makes all of them. If his velocity or stuff were suffering they would have shut him down any time now, but he seems to be getting better not worse... so the Sox will let him keep going. I agree^ Let Kopech finish out the season strong with another 3-4 starts and then shut him down until 2018. He has made significant strides this season. 140 innings or so would be a great accomplishment for him at age 21.
  17. http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/pitcher-s...ezs-2017-debut/ Good read for those interested in a scouting report for Lopez' debut^ The makings for a solid #3 starting pitcher are there, but he will have to work on throwing inside to right handers, and improving his change/curveball command to keep them down in the zone. The fastball is blistering.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 08:50 AM) I actually think Charlotte will be okay. Likely to have a lot of the same guys that are rotating in and out of our majors. Just not an exciting prospect group. Edit: yeah honestly I think Charlotte will be better this year because Birmingham has good pitching talent (albeit helped by that field) Both Collins and Jimenez will get a taste of AA and should each start 2018 there as well. They both seem to be on track for a mlb debut at some point in 2019 if everything keeps progressing.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 08:40 AM) Not sure how birmingham will respond to offense on their roster. In the last few weeks, three quality positional prospects have been added to Birmingham in Polo, Jimenez and Collins. Should help that team score some runs for a change. Kopech, Adams and Gurrero get to throw to Collins as well.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 08:05 AM) Sounds like Eloy should be any day now too. Jimenez has been promoted as well Dan Hayes‏Verified account @CSNHayes Following More Eloy Jimenez and Zack Collins are both being promoted from Double-A Birmingham from Single-A Winston-Salem. #WhiteSox
  21. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 05:38 AM) 20 Games left and neither team is making the playoffs....sure, get him acclimated to the Birmingham facilities so it's not new to him next year. I like it. Would like to see the same for Jimenez too. Not sure I support him getting promoted either, as Zavala seems more deserving. Collins has performed very well in August, batting .343./500/.686 with 11 walks to only 8 strikeouts Zavala has had the more impressive season though.
  22. QUOTE (Lillian @ Aug 11, 2017 -> 03:41 PM) I suppose this is as good a place as any, to get a clarification on a question I have: Using MLB.com's "Pipeline," I don't understand how they derive some of these "overall" grades. For example, here is Alec Hansen's line: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 50. How do they compute a 50 overall grade from those numbers? Overall grade is a fluid rating, but does take into account the likelihood of a player reaching their ceiling. A player with a "50" grade currently could still become a very good player, but there are questions as to how likely that happens.
  23. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 10:22 AM) The comp that gets thrown on Rutherford a lot is David Justice. Thats not a bad player, will probably get you 25-30 HR's at his peak, get on base at a high clip, be an asset in the field and steal 20-30 bases. Huh? I would be absolutely thrilled if Rutherford ended up having a career anywhere close to David Justice^ Justice was a career .279/.378/.500 hitter with 40.5 career WAR and 305 home runs. While not a superstar, that is rock solid production.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 08:49 AM) Can is 2020, most likely is 2021. Realistically I'm thinking 2020 is the earliest I can see the White Sox contending for the division. 2019 would be great, but that would mean our young players come to the majors and immediately perform at a high level. We should have a wave of talent ready for the majors by 2020/2021 and should be locked and loaded to compete.
  25. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 07:04 AM) 1) Clippard was just moved to Houston. Another salary dump. The recent trades with KC, Yankees and Tampa Bay were nothing but salary dumps. The team traded Dan Jennings to Tampa bay for absolutely nothing. We now have Bummer as our only lefty in the bullpen. And he can't get anybody out. 2) I read yesterday that the White Sox are contemplating moving Avi Garcia and Abreu this off season. I have no doubt in my mind that both of them will be moved for prospects. More salary dumps. The team now has the worse pitching staff in MLB. Without Avi Garcia and Abreu we will have the worse offense in MLB And the lowest payroll in MLB. What is your point though? You are aware that we are completely rebuilding, and what that means right?
