  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 09:22 AM) Yes, but if you are drafting BPA, and I have no idea why you wouldn't with a top 3 pick, most of that pool is eaten up giving the draftees anywhere near their slot, which I think most expect. Perhaps, but it still gives you options later in the draft as you get the highest bonus pool slot for each round. #1 overall would be a nice boost to this rebuild
  2. QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 09:32 AM) Interesting scenario since we have Collins, but Zavala has been tearing it up. Would like to see what he has against AA pitching. But I wouldn't be against being aggressive with his development. You can't keep him behind Collins forever, so mind as well see what he has in the more advanced levels. I don't have much scouting info to go on besides the article I posted earlier. Sounds like his arm is fringy, but his technique and pop up are solid. "Defensively, he sports soft hands and very efficient footwork. For a guy that was considered to be a work in progress at catcher he excels defensively. His throwing arm is viewed by professional scouts as slightly below average which I assume is a byproduct of the Tommy John surgery of 2012. However, his ultra-efficient pop-step-throw mechanics and laser like accuracy have allowed him to devastate his opponents running game. Thus far he has nailed would-be base stealers at a 37% clip. He is a very perceptive player and is not afraid to throw to catch runners off guard at first base which he did in back to back games against Greenville and Hickory earlier in the week, and he nearly caught a runner leaning off of second last night. From the multiple games that I have observed his baseball IQ is stellar. Zavala was recently selected as a SALLY league all-star and is a name for White Sox fans to keep an eye on. I look forward to watching him grow as a player and feel like he is only going to continue to improve. The professional scouts profile Zavala as a major league backup. From my vantage point I see more. There are some questions, but there is an awful lot to like here and there will always be an organization willing to develop a cerebral, athletic catcher who can stymie an opponent’s running game and bring the occasional thunder with his bat." Scout June 13, 2016 That is really encouraging to hear as Zavala has really broken out in 2017. I would consider promoting him to AA and see what he can do.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 09:23 AM) I don't know if it's true, but I like the idea of staying down there so they feel more free to work on pitches like his new cutter without worrying about the consequences of runs as much. No matter how much we say the majors is low pressure for the sox right now, nobody wants to get shelled on tv in front of at least double the audience of Charlotte. My vote would be to keep Giolito in AAA for the time being. He needs to be consistent from start to start. Right now he flashes great potential and dominates one start, only to get shelled in his next outing.
  4. Seby Zavala - What do we have in this guy? http://notesfromthesally.com/2016/06/13/sc...a-c-kannapolis/ He has been on a tear since being promoted to Winston Salem, hitting .320 avg, .393 OBP, .560 SLG, .953 OPS The power has been impressive as well, with 18 home runs in 75 games in 2017. What do we have in Zavala? He's going to turn 24 years old in August, but his very strong 2017 surely has raised attention in the organization.
  5. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 10:33 PM) I like that Gomez guy a lot though. I wonder if he was on the table for Swarzak. I actually think Cordell might be better than Gomez. Gomez has hit for average, but projects to have "30" grade power. He profiles as a solid batting average utility player with average defense. I'd rather have Cordell who actually has the toolset to become a starter with his defense and pop.
  6. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:32 AM) Phillies. It goes by the order from previous draft. Lets not leave anything to chance then. We need to finish off this season' tank job to get #1 overall. Then Soxtalk will have something juicy to talk about all winter/spring.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 09:09 PM) Forget about him until AT LEAST 2019. I agree with this^ Jimenez mlb ETA is some point in 2019. He's a 20 year old kid and has only played 54 games at A+ level. He arguably should stay in A+ for the rest of this season and just start fresh in AA in 2018. Why call him up anytime before that? Let the kid develop.
  8. QUOTE (maxjusttyped @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 07:13 AM) Fangraphs has the Sox and Phillies projected to finish with identical 62-100 records. Every loss from here on out matters. http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings If we hypothetically tied, who would get the #1 overall pick?
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:23 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen‏Verified account @CST_soxvan 18m18 minutes ago Reynaldo Lopez "getting close," Hahn said. "Will force our hand to bring up soon to Chicago." I think the Sox will try to deal Holland and/or Gonzalez and then call up Lopez for the last two months. Hopefully tonight is his last start in AAA.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:28 PM) Fabian Ardaya‏ @FabianArdaya 11m11 minutes ago Rick Hahn said he doesn't feel a demotion to Triple-A Charlotte would prove helpful to Tim Anderson. #WhiteSox Anderson has been a mess this season. Might just have to ride it out and let him start fresh next year?
  11. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 02:55 PM) https://www.wsj.com/articles/for-the-white-...069920?mod=e2fb The biggest thing that caught my eye was this paragraph: "In Hahn’s ideal world, the White Sox might have gotten here sooner. He acknowledged that there have been other moments where he and Williams proposed a total rebuild, as the team heads toward its fifth straight losing season. He's likely referring to a rumored quality trade proposal for Samardzija the Sox received, but the decision was made to go for it. Hahn was rumored to be pushing to rebuild, but was shot down.
  12. QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:14 PM) There goes his trade value. Probably for ever. This team is so ready to tank the rest of 2017
  13. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 03:16 PM) Ranking the trades with risk/reward/loss considered. 1.) Eaton Trade - To me Eaton was an awesome player who would age quickly and continue to get hurt. Loved that the Sox got three potential starters with all different profiles. Sox took their valuable, yet risky, asset and diversified it into three guys with considerable MLB upside. 2.) Swarzak Trade - Obviously love getting the big prospects in Sale/Q but this is no risk with considerable reward. 3.) Sale Trade - Sale has been the best pitcher in baseball so this is tough but Moncada was huge for me. If Moncada reaches 70% of his ceiling I think 6.5 years of him is just a little less than 3 years of healthy Sale. The move had to be done though. Kopech needs to be a stud to win this won because Diaz/Basabe have nosedived since the trade. 4.) Q trade - I was stuck between this one and Sale but I never saw us getting a guy like Jimenez. Huge props to Hahn on that. My worry is that Cease's ceiling isn't as high as once considered and the third and fourth guys are almost irrelevant. I liked 1-4 at the time and still do after Sale/Eaton aging. 5.) Yankees trade - I loved the initial reports when i heard it was Rutherford ++ but was really disappointed when I saw the ++. Rutherford's prospect has been hurt since the draft. He played in the worst hitting park in baseball but could be the Yankees getting out before it's too late. Clarkin can't seem to stay healthy and maybe a MOTR guy and more likely a BOTR guy. Moving 2.5 years of Kahnle, a 1.5 a half of Robertson and Frazier in individual trade I would have thought we could get 5-6 prospects with two being top 100 types. I like Rutherford but there's a hefty bet on the Sox. This deal reeks of the White Sox trying to make up the money spent on Robert. The inclusion of an industry T30 gives Hahn and Co. a rationale defense of the move but I really doubt most teams evaluate Rutherford as a T30 let alone a T50 prospect. He's got the potential no doubt, but at some point we need the production to bring merit to the ranks. My concern with many of these deals is that nearly all of the prospects the Sox have acquired are "projection" based prospects. Very few of our guys have legitimately performed well in the minors leagues, so we are still waiting for the "tools" to match up with on the field play. We have rolled the dice almost entirely on prospects who have high major league ceilings, but many also have significant bust risks associated...which does frighten me some. 1) Moncada has a far higher bust risk than the #1 prospect in baseball should have. None of us can be happy to see the high strikeout rate combined with solid, albeit unspectacular numbers and feel comfortable. He is not currently a good enough defense player for his glove to create value like a Baez/Russell. 2) Kopech has outstanding stuff, but has yet to show enough control necessary to be a solid mlb starting pitcher. While he has been healthy, I am worried about him getting hurt throwing as hard as he does. Extremely high upside, but we need to see the control come a long way. He's only 21 so time is on his side. 3) Jimenez looks solid, can't really complain 4) Giolito is incredibly inconsistent from start to start, and there are concerns about fastball velocity/movement not being great. I feel the Nationals realized he was overhyped and swiftly dealt him while he still had value. I hope I am wrong. 5) Rutherford is pure projection right now. Scouts are convinced he will not stick in center, forcing him to have a heck of a bat to profile as a quality corner. No power has shown up yet. High risk trade. 6) Lopez has been solid, small size may lead him to the pen eventually. Remains to be seen. 7) Collins has had a poor year offensively, despite the power. High K% rate in A+ ball is concerning for a top 15 draft pick. Walks might not translate with AA/AAA/MLB pitching with better control. 8) Basabe/Diaz values have tanked ETC. I realize all prospects have some downside, development and struggles, I just hope we get what we thought we were getting in alot of these players.
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) Yeah, I hear you, but I guess we need to see how the next 5 days go. I don't think this is nearly the buyer's market as it's been made out to be. It is totally a buyer's market for relievers. You can continue to be upset over what is a minor trade, or focus on the next stages of development our farm needs to get us where we need to be. There was not a better return to be had right now. Recently heard the Padres do not expect to deal Hand due to a lack of quality offers. Once again, the market is just not great for sellers right now.
  15. QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) I hope that we see him in Birmingham, even if its just for a month or so. He has absolutely crushed the ball since joining Winston-Salem. Would love to see what he can do against AA pitching. Maybe, but there's not really much need to rush him. Either way he should start the 2018 season in AA. His mlb ETA should be some point during the 2019 season if all goes well.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 10:05 AM) Reading this I see a pre-back injury Tyler Saladino. Nothing fancy, nothing loud, but a guy who will go out and give you a lower to middle tier starter or a super-sub guy who you can plug into a ton of different spots and situations to help your team out. A lower rung guy does you absolutely no good as you literally have no where to play them now. It almost had to be a guy from AA or AAA, preferably AAA just because of where prospects are, and will be in the very near future. Not sure about Cordell's injury return timeline, but when/if the Sox can move Melky I see Cordell taking his spot immediately and getting regular mlb at bats
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 10:03 AM) Rats. Jim Callis‏Verified account @jimcallisMLB Following More Jim Callis Retweeted Carmen DeFalco Hi, Carmen. Cordell is toolsy & versatile, has power & speed. Chance to be regular, could be VG 4th OF who has played some INF. @WhiteSox Callis seems to think he is solid^
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 10:01 AM) That was just an honest question. I had never heard the term used before. I don't know if there is a hitch, but one would think if the dude was on the DL for a month that they would have checked the medicals before this news got anywhere close to being leaked. Hell, for all we know, it could be Swarzak's medicals. Chicago White Sox‏Verified account @whitesox 53s53 seconds ago More The #WhiteSox have acquired minor-league outfielder Ryan Cordell from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for RHP Anthony Swarzak. Looks like the deal is finalized^
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 09:23 AM) A couple of random sportswriter notes but nothing even approaching a rumor. This doesn't seem like the right market to trade Avi in at all. He's very likely staying put.
  20. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) I hope the Sox are willing to eat the ~$5M and try to actually get something interesting back. I'm sure the salary will be a talking point, but it's not always as simple as "Sox should eat salary to get a better return". While in essence I agree, we should always try to get the best return possible, the Sox can only eat so much money before it stops making sense. The Sox splurged and spent more than $50 million on the Robert signing, which is very significant for the franchise. It was key to save roughly $20 million in the Frazier/DRob/Kahnle deal to help offset some of that cost, although it likely resulted in the return being a bit less than we would have liked.
  21. QUOTE (MikeKreevich @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 08:22 AM) A winning team needs to be strong up the middle. The rebuilding White Sox will need to be strong at shortstop and catcher. Maybe Zack or Seby will progress at catcher but I don't see a shortstop in the organization good enough. Sox won't hesitate in the draft if they feel a quality SS is available. It's not easy to find a player who can play quality defense at SS who has a solid bat. Those players are elite prospects. We need to be patient with Anderson and continue to give him a chance, but I would absolutely like to have 1-2 more high quality SS prospects in the wings for the future.
  22. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 09:20 AM) Not surprised. If the Cubs didn't win last year, there's no way Q is on the Cubs now. Agreed^ Jerry never makes this deal if the Cubs had last in the world series. Now, it does not matter. (I am not suggesting that is the correct way of thinking)
  23. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 09:11 AM) https://twitter.com/JoeO670/status/890205827193327616 Unbelievable. From a fan's perspective and/or GM's perspective, this is unthinkable. From an owner's perspective it might not be as black and white. The Cubs were not likely our preference of where to deal Quintana, but as long as the return was the best it should not matter one bit from a baseball standpoint.
  24. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 08:53 AM) This bolded term...this basically means a regular on a lousy team, correct? I saw it yesterday and didn't know what it meant. Generally is seen to mean a starting caliber player on a bottom half team in the standings. Not a bad player per se, but a contending team would likely have a better player start over them.
  25. QUOTE (beautox @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 11:34 PM) Agreed I also find it interesting that Callis thinks the yankee system has the most depth, I personally don't see it(its still really good, but the most?). Additionally they're likely to lose 3-5 prospects in the rule V. Yankees won't be able to protect all of those guys, I'd expect the Sox to take a hard look at rule V to see what might be available.
