White Sox select Colson Montgomery #22 overall
steveno89 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Agreed. Many scouting departments dock a prospect big time as a 19 year old prep player. The advantage of being 19 and playing against majority 17-18 year olds cannot be overstated. -
That is a crazy stat In fairness, a lack of pitching has been the reason why the Angels have been so mediocre the past decade. No excuse when you have Trout, Ohtani, Rendon

Fangraphs Farm System Rankings (7/9/21)

Not a crazy take, but I'd argue Ramos has staked his claim as the best position prospect in the system (pre-draft). A 121 wRC+ in A ball at age 19 will certainly grab attention. -
Fangraphs Farm System Rankings (7/9/21)

Montgomery/Kath are likely in or near top 10 system prospects at this point, with Burke likely being in the top 15 The system has had so many graduations as of late that it should be no surprise that the cupboard is pretty bare. Colas signing will help over the winter, but this is still a bottom 5 farm. -
That's really tiny for a pitcher
-
He's about as old as a draftee gets at age 25 already Test him and see what he has got
-
Kath, McDougal and possibly Burke will be overslot deals
-
Exactly. Sox blew their wad with Montgomery/Katz/Burke/McDougal selections and now will be looking to primarily save money
-
Certainly have to like the upside Montgomery/Kath/Burke bring to the table. Worth punting a few rounds on cheapo seniors for.
-
I absolutely could see the Sox using Sheets and/or Burger as trade bait at the deadline. With Cespedes/Colas in the pipeline the Sox should be in a good place OF prospect wise.
-
Glancing at our minors, very few of our prospects seem to be having what can be considered a "Good" season. Of course the farm was going to weaken as we entered the competitive window, but performances have been bleak in 2021
-
I'm with you here. Burger could provide an offensive boost to a club sorely needing some pop. I'm not dealing him for a rental, but in a package to land legitimate and/or cost controlled talent? Absolutely.
-
I think Burger is more likely to be used as trade bait than to be called up before the deadline I agree with ChiSox59 here, zero chance Moncada is pushed off 3B in favor of Burger
-
Rodon is not getting dealt. Also, why would the Diamondbacks want him when they are years away from contending again?
-
The injuries have gotten out of control this year. At what point do we seriously start to question the training staff?
-
Cleveland's schedule is absolutely brutal from July 1st to August 12th. If the Sox can tread water, we should be just fine.

Fans at opening day? Fans at Opening Day! (confirmed)

With COVID numbers continuing to heavily trend downward, we could be in a much better situation by mid April. Even more people will be vaccinated and I would expect a bump in fans by mid May assuming the trend continues. -
Trevor Cahill and Mike Leake could be potential minor league deal options for SP depth

Dodgers sign Bauer (3/102, opt-outs, 40-45-17)
steveno89 replied to Jose Abreu's topic in The Diamond Club
he also gets opt outs after the first two seasons and could easily search for another giant payday -
I'm confident Vaughn will hit too, I'm just not sure if it will be right away his rookie season. He has the best hit tool in the organization after Madrigal. Personally, I would send him to AAA and force him to earn a promotion.
-
I think its best to keep expectations for Vaughn largely in check until he proves otherwise. Rookies almost always tend to struggle in their adjustment to the major leagues. The advanced scouting and pitching is at a completely different level even to AAA. The club really needs to bring in a guy like Brad Miller who can play a few different positions and DH a bit.
-
I was in the "Sox must extend Lynn" camp initially, but since have opened up to the idea there might be more risk than value in an extension for a player that turns 34 years old in May. I think you squeeze what you can out of him this season and then evaluate.
-
I agree. Rodon is far from a sexy signing, but at least he is cheap and gives us pitching depth. He could be used as a backend starter or out of the bullpen. If healthy he can be effective.
