  1. Worst fears came true. Burdi to have Tommy John per Yahoo
  2. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 02:55 PM) So what's a potential Swarzak deal with someone? (WSH, NYY, BOS, etc.) Swarzak as a rental guy is interesting. I'd hope for an organizational top 10-15 guy and maybe a lotto ticket?
  3. QUOTE (heirdog @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 03:04 PM) I agree, he's got to get more creative. To win now, he can more than stabilize his bullpen problem with multiple relievers from the White Sox, give up Robles and let Soto eventually be the "Harper replacement." Of course Soto is a step down from Robles but by wasting this potential championship year, you have essentially lost Harper for this year as well...and not just the future. Or get even more creative and give up Robles & Luzardo or some other lottery ticket for Robertson, Kahnle and Basabe or Call to keep another potential "Harper replacement" in the wings. I disagree. Teams will ask Rizzo for Robles all day, but they simply are not getting him. He likely will be able to make decent bullpen acquisitions with guys like Luzardo/Neuse/Kieboom/Marmolejos/Stephenson/Watson/Johnson and not have to sacrifice Fedde/Soto/Robles. There is not a Chapman/Miller level reliever out there that is a lock down guy, hence Robles/Soto stay.
  4. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 01:41 PM) Firm believer he'll still be our #1. Giolito-Kopech-Lopez-Hansen-Dunning, remember we had too many LHPs? (Sale, Q, Rodon, Santiago) Several guys like Law have said they still view Giolito as a potential #2, and that he has actually performed better than his statistics would indicate. I think Hansen likely ends up as a reliever, but I hope I am wrong. Spencer Adams is a guy to watch out for, as I think he ends up making it as a starter. If he can maintain the fastball velocity he has shown in 2017 (92-94 mph regularly) coupled with very good control, I think he will leap over guys with flashier stuff. Guys with fringy control might be able to develop average control, but plus control is almost impossible to teach.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:43 AM) Cease's delivery reminds me so much of Rich Harden it's unbelievable. I immediately thought about Rich Harden as well when watching youtube videos of him!
  6. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 01:50 PM) Maybe a Flete and Rose 2.0 type deal, nothing big, probably actually ranked prospects this time however, some org's 15-30 guy or two I'd expect more than that since Swarzak is pitching pretty well. He could help a contender in the 7th and 8th innings. I'd like to get at least one decent prospect back
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) Robles for their pick of any 4 relievers, with the Sox picking up the rest of Robertson's money this year. Then the OF of the future would be in place, and the Nats are well on their way to a showdown with LA. Robles will not be traded as he is the direct replacement for Harper after next season. The Nationals could dangle Soto/Kieboom/Stephenson/Fedde/Neuse/Luzardo for bullpen help though
  8. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 12:10 PM) A Gray/Alonso package seems to make a lot of sense for the Yankees at this point. Gray + Alonso is not going to come cheap. If the Yankees were not willing to pony up for Quintana, I'm not certain they want to do the same for Gray.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 12:04 PM) WEEI‏Verified account @WEEI 1m1 minute ago Source: Red Sox call top prospect Rafael Devers up to Triple-A http://dlvr.it/PVbgQ2 I always prefer to refer to that as a promotion. When I hear "called up" I immediately think to the show.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) According to Nightengales report, the first Robo deal was killed at ownership level, due to cash. They are at high end. They did have that big offer to Jansen but it definitely seems like there's an issue here. Idk how they offer Melancon/Jansen big money and then cry poor in a Robertson deal. The trade cost for relief help has skyrocketed ion recent years, and any decent setup arm or closer is warranting a big return (see Miller, Chapman, Thornburg trades)
  11. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) I could see them going after Gray now. After what Q got traded for, I'd expect the pricetag for Gray to be high as well. Yankees will likely consider calling up Adams to fill in
  12. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 10:55 AM) Last ditch effort to figure out who can stick before deciding how many guys you need before deadline? No team is going to find success in the playoffs without a quality bullpen. Right now the Nationals do not have any trustworthy relievers, in a year in which they desperately need several. Packaging Robertson + Kahnle/Swarzak + some salary relief for a juicy return would be awesome.
  13. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 11:02 AM) Yah, could be. Dangerous game to play there. But I suppose a Panda + Groome + 20M for Frazier may be of interest to the Sox, but doubt the Red Sox are interested in giving up Groome to save $30M over the next 2.5 years. Interesting, but I doubt they give up their top pitching prospect for what amounts to salary relief.
  14. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:46 AM) People need to stop saying this has come out of nowhere or that it's a career year that he's very unlikely to replicate. He's pitching basically the exact same as he did for the Yankees last year, minus the ridiculous home runs, and similarly to how he pitched for the Yankees AAA in 2016 and the Indians AAA/MLB in 2015. He added a few mph onto the fastball and has since then been a dependable 9ish K/9 to a 2ish BB/9, 45ish GB%. That's likely gonna lead to around a 3 ERA, with the usual reliever variance depending on LOB%, HR/FB% and BABIP. Add to that his ability to go multiple innings as a former starter and that's a valuable piece. What sort of return are you expecting for Swarzak?
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:41 AM) The Sox asked for the same two players to get a Quintana package going. Who would you rather have... Brad Hand or Jose Quintana? I don't blame the Padres for a high ask considering how few quality relief options exist on the market right now. Hand/Robertson/Kahnle/Swarzak/Madson/Neshek/Doolittle/Wilson Ramos? Doubt Iglesias gets dealt
  16. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:39 AM) I'd be inclined to hold Kahnle, and let him close for a year. There's some risk that he disintegrates, but it's worth the risk, imv. Hand will be interesting. I thought that way for a bit, but then I realized that you should always trade relievers if the offer is solid. Pen arms are so volatile, I'd try to sell high on Kahnle and get a team to make a good offer. If packaging some combination of Robertson/Kahnle/Swarzak together boosts the return, I absolutely would do it. Remember, we are actively trying to tank and lose games now.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) Hmm... Quintana or Hand... For Brad Hand.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) Ha, as a BENCHMARK for Kahnle return. I don't like player comps anymore. Except for the Eloy as Jermaine Dye. Realistically, a guy like Hand should get 1 Top 50-100 prospect and 1 more decent prospect (organizational top 20) in return. The ask can be higher, but I doubt they get a Miller/Chapman level return. Kahnle is interesting as his peripherals are outstanding this season, but the track record is not great. Relievers are getting to be very valuable trade chips now, as 7th/8th innings in the playoffs are seen as crucial to success. Will a team like the Nationals be willing to part with significant prospects for relief? They likely will have to.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:09 AM) https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/brad-hand Hand is getting quite a bit of suitors for the Padres. What info, if any, would sox learn for any of our own relievers? Is he a comp for Kahnle? Padres are getting a lot of bites on their cheap starters like Cahill. So wish that Holland/MiGo could have sustained what they were doing. Padres were reportedly asking about Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres...which is not happening
  20. QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 02:38 AM) Potential. The key word there. And that guy is a single A pitcher you're talking about. For an ace caliber starter on one of the best deals in baseball for years to come. Don't like the deal. For the record - I hated the Shields deal with a passion, was ok with/mildly disappointed with no Devers inclusion in Sale deal, loved the Eaton deal, disappointed with this one. Cease already had Tommy John too. Holy s*** I like this deal less and less. Cubs robbed us I can't believe it. 1) Devers was never made available by Boston 2) Cease is a prospect that has trended significantly upward lately. I've heard some scouts calling his fastball among the best in the minor leagues. He also has a plus curveball and developing change. Sox will likely move Cease to high A by the start of next season, and he should be on track for 2019-2020 as a starter or reliever. There is still untapped upside and he has frontline starter potential if everything clicks. 3) Jimenez is a consensus top 10 prospect in the game. Players like that are only traded in total blockbuster deals like this.
  21. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 06:10 PM) When giving up a talent and value like Jose Quintana, I would think the Sox should have gotten at least one player back that is just about MLB ready. I wish that along with Cease and Jimenez the Sox would have gotten back someone like Candelario or Happ or Schwarber. I know Jimenez is a highly rated prospect as is Cease, but being so far away from the major leagues makes them a very risky return for a proven talent like Q who is under control with such a reasonable contract. I know I'm almost alone in my opinion by the ecstatic reaction of almost everyone here to the trade. I wonder if the Seattle fans were this excited when the Mariners acquired Jeremy Reed + for Freddy Garcia, who was to become a free agent. Again, not knocking the potential of Jimenez and Cease, just would have liked at least one proven major league ready player to go along with them for a proven commodity like Quintana, one of the best and most consistent left handed starters in baseball signed to a bargain contract for several more years. Sox had to weigh potential risk with potential upside. I don't mind them shooting for prospects further away, but with higher ceilings. Haha stated this was by far the best offer that the Sox had received.
  22. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 05:45 PM) I'm pretty sure I destroyed Tim Anderson's career. Asche until we will the world series it is then
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 05:34 PM) You know how much sox fans love q when we are also pissed at a guy saying we got a great trade because the player we gave up isn't any good. Rum bunter is just pissed the forever suck pirates didn't get him.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 05:01 PM) I'd like to see Adolfo in RF. Avi will be traded as soon as it makes sense, like Rodon- in my humble opinion. I do like how we have rapidly started filling holes that existed within the organization. We went from having zero prospect depth 12 months ago, to filling outfield, infield, pitcher and catcher big time
  25. QUOTE (ChiSox1917 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 04:52 PM) This one? http://m.mlb.com/news/article/241991408/ma...picid=151437456 I took it to read that those three will fill in the bottom 2/3's of the White Sox top 30 I read it as filling prospects #11 - 30 within the organization No chance Skoug reaches top 100 anytime too soon, but Burger/Sheets hypothetically could if they mash the rest of the season.
