  1. I just don't think you're getting Bauer at that number though .... he theoretically should get every bit of $30-32mm over 7/8. Also, my opinion, from my perspective is you're better off being the Rays/A's/Cardinals and balancing it all over a long period time and being very calculated. However, if you're not doing that, then I think it makes sense to go for broke during a 5 year period via guys like Bauer. I mean look at the Cubs ... it's back to tear down and bottom of the division for 3-5 years already. You either put the gas pedal down and have a top 3 payroll during the window or you actively trade guys like Abreu now and balance the long-run. Pissing around in the middle gets you nothing ... unfortunately Reinsdorf will be in that middle w Joc Pederson and guys like Quintana, Paxton, Hamels, etc.
  2. I'd totally take him at that for 4 years rather than 7 or 8 year deal like Cole. Let's say Cole has one bad year due to age at the end of his deal ... or blows out his arm (understand that can happen in a 4 year deal too). Spread that $36mm over 8 years and you have $40.5mm, but you're paying him for 7/8 years still at $40mm+ while he likely declines into the end of his career. Just me I'd pay the premium on a short deal with an arm. Or even a bat. Betts got 12/365 - or $30mm a year. His value is tied to his legs/defense a lot -- once he starts slowing down that deal will be ugly. I'd give him 5 years and $210mm and sleep fine during his 28-33 years. It'd be tough for him to get a 7 year, 155mm deal at 33/34 years old. The premium you have to pay on a short-term deal is worth it IMO.
  3. yes, it's just another of those basically. rewards application.
  4. Someone did this last year and it was fun to go through at the end. Seeing as this off-season could go in any direction thought it'd be a good exercise. My pick is always the FIRST team I listed Top FA's, Guess of years and $$ + team Trevor Bauer: Yankees, Mets, White Sox (I can dream). $4 years - $170mm JT Realmuto: Blue Jays, Mets, Phillies. 6 years - 130mm G. Springer: Braves, Tigers, White Sox, SF Giants. 5 years - 110mm M. Ozuna: Giants, Braves, Cardinals. 4 years, 85mm DJ LaMahieu: Yankees, Nationals, Mets. 3 years, 65mm D. Gregorious: Angels, Phillies. 2 year, 30mm M. Tanaka: Yankees, Blue Jays, Angels. 2, 30mm J. Odorizzi: Twins, Blue Jays, White Sox, Cubs. 2 years, 20mm M Brantley: Astros, Dodgers, Nationals. 3 years, 40mm J. Turner: Dodgers. 1 year, 10mm M. Semien: Athletics, Phillies, Angels. 1 year, 12mm bounceback J. McCann: Mets, Phillies, Cardinals. 4 years, 36mm J. Pederson: White Sox. Angels. 1 year, 10mm (unfortunately) Quintana: White Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees, Giants, Red Sox. 3 years, 24mm Cruz: Twins 2 year deal, but w big buyout. 1 year, 15mm, $5mm buyout, 10mm year two. Other Names: Kluber, Charlie Morton, Rich Hill, Yadi, Wainwright, Carlos Santana, Colome, Cole Hamels Quick hitters: I think the Sox grab one of Quintana, Hamels. I think Yadi and Wainwright ultimately sign back with the Cards. Kluber takes a surprise 2-3 year deal with a team like the Braves, Blue Jays, Twins, etc. Rich Hill signs with the Dodgers. Charlie Morton "retires" aka sits out a bit of the year.
  5. I mean ... If I had to take a guess, I would've said $1yr, $4-6mm. To each their own though. I'd rather have Rich Hill.
  6. No not a fake at all, didn't mean it like that at all. In August though they were likely doing trials, or had a good idea of what they were working with at that point. It's all fine and well to cash out - I agree, it's an incentive issue - not like that CEO is doing anything more than every single employee who is actually working on the cure ... but for some reason the top guy gets all the benefit. More so, he likely knew the issues and downfalls of the vaccine - aka how do you transport and store said vaccine? He cashed out on the news knowing it wasn't as rosy as the price associated with the bump.
  7. should be good news. i knew something was fishy about the pfizer news when the ceo sold 60% of his stock on the day of the news. always follow the money.. this is much more promising. now next step is convincing more than 1/3 of the population to take it. going to be a whole other battle that's going to be a year-long battle.
  8. I think this is too conspiracy ... if the sox were really trying to cover this up then they would've just waited the 10 days to get this dropped and nobody would be to the wiser. there was no rush to go get TLR. These things get pleaded out all the time. Pay $10k for a lawyer, get charges dropped, take a class, drive with a breathlyzer in your car for a year. No court during covid. saves everybody time/money. TLR - still a shitty human, but this is the way DUI's work a lot of the time.
  9. This. I had three friends get DUI's in college (not saying I pick smart friends) but all 3 of them were dropped for different reasons ... basically it's very easy to get out of one. You pay like $5-10k and there's a way out. I'd guess he'll need to have a device in his car or something, go to a few classes, etc in exchange for drpped charges
  10. Thats the general idea behind those sites, they take your browsing data, information, etc. and sell it to profit on their end. Another one to look at is Lolli. you earn bitcoin rewards instead of gift cards, etc. used it after i moved into my house and was furnishing it all, made a decent amount of bitcoin back - if it ever works out and bitcoin truly does hit $1mm a coin, i may have furnished my house for free
  11. Yowzas. So tribal. No need to be so tribal. Boil it down ... if this was like a blind A/B thing for picking whos the better baseball player based on results with no context, media, talking, etc. then I think people would be surprised what they pick as a "Good" or "bad" president. In general I'd say that social issues are trending towards good and economic issues are trending towards bad. That's the case over a few decades. It doesn't really matter what president is at the top. It all stems back more so to how we educate, mobilize & incentivize entrepreneurs, and retain/re-train as technology grows. That's it folks. If we do those things well then we have ourselves an overall better life at home with our families and create long term happiness. All the other things stem from a few things (money) and grow and grow until they get to the size we are now The reason small towns are so red is because they're not very informed. Same wtih the reason big cities are blue ... not very informed. Neither side is going to fix your problems. If you go to a small town where manufacturing gave families lives and see what they are now? it's a disaster - boarded up buildings, generally its just a few families that control the grocery stores, hardware stores, etc. & sometimes not even that since a Wal-Mart and Amazon have eaten into it. Those towns are desolate & many times have drug issues. poor education, etc. They feel pitted against "big cities" and they tend to dig in to what they know (or dont know) which is to say they see big companies, big money, change, etc. as all bad. So they cling to RED. It's a falsehood. In big cities they see the opposite view. They say we need to help everybody! we need to give education for free, we need to give housing to homeless, we need to decriminalize drugs and build programs. And again, they see their view as right, no other way. They think anybody voting red is vailed racism, uneducated, and selfish not wanting to help people. Which again, isn't really true. Money doesn't fix issues. giving someone rent controlled or subsidized housing doesnt change the fact they have no ownership or way out of their hourly wage. if you have no assets to your name and your stuck in a vicous cycle, youll be stuck forever. Whcih is why you see the southside and west side the way they are. But in large part many of those residents will continue to vote BLUE beacuse of the promise of free stuff. These are all bi-partisan ideas that should be fixed: education needs to be overhauled. people all learn different. some are visual, some need to physically move stuff, some brains are entrepreneurial, etc. We take all kids and stick them in a square hole when they're all round. Each is different. Just like teachers. Teachers are all different too. We should have like minded teachers teaching like minded students. Memorizing just doesn't advance us. We need to learn the basics (root) and then branch out to each kids advantage to build a society that is vibrant & that utlize each persons skill sets. Money needs to be overhauled - i've touched on this a hundred times i feel like - but the current money system doesn't work. we are wildly more efficient than we were 30 years ago, but overall, our pay has not gone up in lock step with that. the people at the top have every advantage and that needs to be overhauled. People at the bottom need to be given property/houses and learn to take ownership of something. take pride in an asset. build wealth for the next generation. Health - we need a healthy society - which ties into schools. we need such a bigger focus on how to eat, move around, etc. it should be a giant part of our lives. it should be a focus. Which then in ties to free healthcare. it should be a right, but we shouldn't be spending money wildly because everybody is eating oreos and mcdonalds as a fat America and developing diabetes and heart problems. Green - again i'm not a democrat or a repbulican. Im a realist. our most important asset is the earth. we are stewards for the earth and we should treat it as such. we make money off of every other industry, making money off the earth should be one too. We do it now, but it's just extracting from the earth. We should be adding to it. The best thing we can do is leave teh earth better htan we found it for the next generation. if we can do that and make money/create a new incentive system then we should be doing that. This can get people back to work.
  12. Alright! Probably an overreaction - but that's what this board is for right? Overreactions. I like this move. I like the idea of not going all legacy guys. Also it does seem to fit the narrative that Hahn was given the boobie prize of getting his choice on pitching coach. Hopefully! it means Bauer will consider us a little more seriously if JR is willing to spend on SP and short-term deals.
  13. I've never liked Stone as a human. As an announcer hes fine and i like him. Everything else he can go pound sand. I blocked him on Twitter - can't stand how cocky and rude he is to fans. He has an ego just like TLR. All these old, entitled baby boomers with ego who think they're special can go kick rocks - don't need them. Time to turn over the keys to kids.
  14. To be fair, that's what everybody who may be caught in this situation should do. Not condoning drinking and driving, but if you want a lawyer to get you out of it, you refuse to blow and draw the process out in order to buy time and process alcohol. A .09 can turn into a .079 in an hour and a half and now you have no DUI. Again, not condoning, but that's the way to approach it.
  15. Everybody is on the same page here ... so i'm going to make a lighthearted take... CALIFORNIA ANGELS??? He's quite literally stuck in 1990. They haven't been called that since before Luis Robert was born. Outside of all the obvious problems - this is a problem too.
  16. Personally I think he's playing this hand as leverage for one of 2 reasons: 1) negotiating out of any charges filed against him post presidency - basically I'll keep doing this until you agree not to prosecute. 2) this is basically pushing the boundaries, riling up "his" people for the eventual rollout of TNN, Trump News Network 3) maybe he's just this truly delusional.
  17. Yes. But then explain Jerry for the last 20-30 years and his approach to running a team. The only way he is fired is if the team bands together against him OR this arrest video is really, really bad.
  18. also i get that doesn't make sense - the whole money counts - and we're talking with our money ... he doesn't care. he hasn't cared for a decade when we were in the tank ... its all a math equation when seats aren't filled to make the most money w a small payroll. now? it's a bunch of weak threats.. we say were going to cancel. We say we wont watch or support ... but when it comes down to it if the team goes 100-62 we will be in those seats, drinking $15 beer and watching on tV too... its just the reality. For every die hard fan that walks away, there will be 10 more bandwagon fans who jump on during winning. He's not worried. I get the inconsistencies in my argument - i guess im trying to convey outside of like tim anderson, abreu, giolito and a few others banding togehter? this will blow over and we'll take our sox medicine and like it.
  19. Well, do you expect these ticket reps to craft individual emails to 100's of people? Even responding is probably better than most organizations. At the end of the day Jerry doesn't really care if you cancel your season tickets at all, he just doesn't This is a man who runs campaigns like Ballpark Pass to get as many people in the door, but not to count as in the door, so that they can sell you the expensive parking, beer, etc. while keeping the tickets sold under the amount determined in the sweetheart lease. He's a money man. Everything is second to money. This orginization, just like the bulls and bears (and blackhawks before) all need ownership to die off for better days ahead.
  20. It makes sense to me why Hahn started his presser so odd. Ddin't he mention like this was a group decision and groups don't always agree or something? I remember thinking he was doing his lawyer speak, but instead of bullshitting us on FA signings it was about not wanting to hire TLR.
  21. It's concerning to me because he's almost 80 as well. Shit, I've made poor decision in my life.. but at like 18, 20, 23, etc. And those bad decisions? I've probably driven drunk ... less than 5 times? and by drunk ... i mean i had a few beers on the golf course & probably would blow a .09 or .10 type of bad decisions. Like wait an hour or two in the clubhouse and then drive type of decision. Not crash my car or fall asleep in the intersection bad. Now that I'm older I don't ever put my self in that position ... just grab an Uber. It's so damn simple. I know this thread is 95% in agreement, so it's preaching to the choir.. just maddening.
  22. I'll back this part -- these guys don't care that their manager got drunk and drove. that's not the point to me. it's that he hasn't reached out to players and he's going to act like an old school hard-ass manager to these guys when that doesn't play anymore. they don't care about teh DUI, but he very well could lose the clubhouse quickly into his tenure. not because of the dui, beacuse of everything else TLR.
  23. Guys, TLR isn't stepping down. He knew he got another DUI the day he got the new DUI. The Sox knew he had a DUI. These guys all have egos. TLR doesn't care about his DUI like he didn't care about the last one. He only cares he got caught. Just like he didn't care about steroids. Just like he doesn't care about his players or social isssues. He cares about himself only because in his mind he's Mr perfect HOF guy. If his two DUI's are for crashing a car and falling asleep in an intersection imagine how many other times he's driven drunk? The two times he got caught was because he was so bad at driving that he literally basically turned himself in. He's likely driven drunk HUNDREDS OF TIMES. 60 years of driving + considering it was more socially acceptable in the 70's/80's and he was younger then? I'd guess he's driven drunk 400-500 times. Once a month for 60 years = 720 times. I've had people in my life who are serial drunk drivers ... they always think they're above the law, better drivers than others, the law doesn't apply to them, etc. etc. TLR is that guy. He's proven his ego is HUGE. He's proven he doesn't follow rules (dui and steroids) hes proven that he does not have a very pristine track record around social issues ... yet here we are. This is like a $13 beer at the park, you have to suck it up and like it because it's uncle Jerry's world and if you want to have a break from your shitty life for a few hours to watch a game, well by damn, it will be done on billionaire jerry's terms.
  24. i'll just say as a sox fan I'm getting really tired of loving my team DESPITE something. Just very tiring. Life is short and i like watching good baseball, but also want to get behind guys i like. I'm getting closer and closer by the year of just becoming a GENERAL fan and just following teams that do it the right way and play good ball.
  25. I'd entertain for sure. I'm a bit outside the box in terms of my like for Madrigal. I know it goes against a lot of the modern day baseball theory - i just look at Madrigal as almost the glue of a team like this ... meaning he's almost Scotty Pods or Iguchi of the 2005 team to me. The guy who just does his job and starts/extends rallies. I always felt like when Scotty Pods came up it was like "oh, this inning isn't over yet" meaning he could hit a single, steal second, and then iguchi just would drop one in shallow center and its a run across the board. That's how I feel when Madrigal comes up to bat. It could be 2 outs, nobody on. I feel like he's going to single, then turn it over to Anderson who can put one in the gap. It's a long winded way of saying I think his value to the Sox is more than his trade value. I'd consider all options - I do feel like this offseason is an opportune one though where it seems like we should be able to "buy" trades and/or FA at a discounted price. I'd much rather fill the holes/gap that way than trading away some real high floor guys like a Vaughn and Madrigal.
