Our insiders don’t think Montgomery can play SS long-term but you gotta at least give him the chance. No need to move him to 3B until he proves he can’t play SS or improve at the position.
He has as much control as some of the other names we kick around. No guarantee any of them are here longer.
I’d like him as a second piece but need a better primary piece (Kjerstad/Cowser).
Well yeah, this was my logic too here. Gunnar has played 3B at the MLB level and if Ortiz is better defensively, wouldn't you play him at SS if you are going to play Gunnar, Westburg and Ortiz?
Idk if it were me, I think I would just play him over Mateo (his ability to play both IF and OF makes him a good 26th man) and Urias. One of those two is starting with Westburg and Gunnar to start the year. Dude is entering his age 25 season. Might as well showcase him.
I've corrected my original post. I was referring to him seeing time last year.
And my point still stands regardless of where Gunnar is next year: play Ortiz somewhere in the IF if he's so highly regarded, whether it's 2B or 3B until Gunnar needs to move over for Holliday. Especially over Urias and Mateo.
At 3B sure. Like I clearly stated: what about 2B?
Referring back to last season, seems like they could have played him and showcased him to deal this off-season. Now he's just going to age off of being a prospect.
Edit: oh wait, you mean Gunnar for SS next year.
Point still stands: he can play 3B then until Holliday is ready.
Urias (wasn't that good last year) and Mateo (utility player at best) shouldn't block any of the younger guys from playing.
I do find it odd that Ortiz didn't get a shot over someone like Westburg since he's aging out of prospect status. Assuming he isn't traded and Holliday isn't ready, that's probably the opening day shortstop.
Edit: meant ready not traded.
I think he may be the primary backup, but he isn’t just going to sit on the bench. He DH’d a good amount last year. They’re mostly signing him for his bat.
