  1. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) I doubt he opts out after next year. His salary that year is $12.1 million with another $26.8 million guaranteed the following two years. The current record for a first year arbitration eligible player is $10 million by Ryan Howard in 2008 and he had already won an MVP. Abreu would probably break that record but not by much. Would it really be worth risking $26 million in guaranteed salaries to have a chance to gain a couple more million in 2017? I don't think so. Say he goes out and has a career ending injury in 2017. That Sox non tender him the next year and he just forfeited that $26 million. I think if he has another good 2016 and 2017 he will opt out after 2017. The risk/reward is a little more worth it to him at that time. What does he make next season? Because the arbitration raise would be on-top of that. Edit: just checked. His salary is $11,667,000 in 2016 according to baseball reference. For 2017 it is $12,167,000. So his salary going through arb would be well over the $12,167,000 because he would def get more than a 500k raise in arbitration.
  2. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 08:07 PM) How? They shed 28 million in player payroll by trading peavy and rios. And abreu' salary is back loaded And Abreu can opt out after next year and go through arbitration his remaining 3 years so he will likely get more than what he's signed for. Changing his agent this year bodes well that he will do that.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 09:51 AM) Judging by how little he played in the last month of the season, and knowing the Pirates history for taking chances on players in his boat when teams are willing to pick up salary, this might actually be a decent fit. I wouldn't expect anymore more than flotsam in the deal, but it could work. Agree. Plus they have Morse signed for next season I believe so they could make a perfect platoon at first.
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 09:38 AM) I think the Sox are going to be active, but I don't think it's going to be in the free agent market. I think they'll be looking to make several trades to improve the offense, and I think they'll sign some dudes to improve the bullpen. A lot of people have said this the past few days, but I just don't see how since I think they keep the starting pitching intact (wouldn't be shocked of a Q trade however) and I don't see them trading the few good prospects they have. Unless they target bench pieces that make good platoon partners, a free-agent like Wieters taking a one-year pillow contract to rebuild value, or making trades like the Reed-Davidson trade (1 bullpen piece with control (Petricka, Jones, etc.) for hitting prospect that may be blocked and expendable swap and then signing guys for the bullpen).
  5. My turn: Royals over Astros in 4 Blue Jays over Rangers in 4 Blue Jays over Royals in 5 Cubs over Cardinals in 5 Dodgers over Mets in 5 Dodgers over Cubs in 6 Blue Jays over Dodgers in 6
  6. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 09:22 AM) Royals over Astros in 5 Blue Jays over Rangers in 4 Blue Jays over Royals in 6 Cubs over Cardinals in 6 Dodgers over Mets in 6 Cubs over Dodgers in 4 Cubs over Blue Jays in 6 The division series aren't 7 games. 6 isn't possible.
  7. More likely a team would move to a big market city in Canada before going to Mexico.
  8. QUOTE (Mike F. @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 09:02 AM) I have said it before and I'll say it again: The Sox have to take a hitter at #10 unless there is a pitcher that is unbelievably good that slipped somehow. That's not saying anything different from "take best available" which is what most people are saying. Your concept is the same just worded differently.
  9. QUOTE (Mike F. @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 08:57 AM) LMAO exactly. They've won 1 playoff game so far. At least win a series before gloating. Sheesh. I mean they do have every right to be happy and excited but yeah they should ease up just a bit.
  10. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 04:35 PM) We could definitely use some of those. Yes but still take best player available regardless of position player or pitcher. I like them drafting and developing pitching personally as we can flip them for needs later on. That's why I can see a Quintana for multiple bats kind of deal in the off-season and then drafting pitching with the first few picks in the draft.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 08:14 AM) Fox Chicago news was on briefly as I went to bed last night. The reporter walking around Waveland or wherever was asking people if they "have been waiting their whole lives for this." Unless they were born in November 2008 or later, they've seen the Cubs get exactly this far already. Calm down on the hype, dude. lol that is funny considering they were in the NLDS in 07 and 08 and even farther in 03 and I would imagine people on Waveland at that time are older than 12 haha
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 02:15 AM) The White Sox are good at ... being loyal to players and managers and front office people. The Sox are bad at ... having a sense of urgency about anything. I really truly don't think we're gonna ever get over .500 again for an extended period until we clean house. It's always "early." No need to panic. It's too early. Then every year we hit September and oh, yes, it's too late. September is a boring methodical funeral for the rest of the season. Don't worry, folks, it's early they said after going 0-4 to open the season. Oops. Give me some urgency!! We finish 10 under .500 and I sense Jerry and everybody are OK with this. Hey folks, the season sucked! The Sox are bad at...being loyal to their fans. As an owner, the first people you should be loyal to our your fans. You should be wanting to put the best team out on the field at all times with the best possible coaching staff.
  13. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 08:10 AM) Astros over Royals in 4 Blue Jays over Rangers in 3 Cubs over Cardinals in 4 Mets over Dodgers in 5 Blue Jays over Astros in 6 Mets over Cubs in 7 Blue Jays over Mets in 5 Beyond popular belief of most people on here, this would be a fun series to watch/follow. The series of young arms vs. young bats.
  14. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 08:30 AM) You're not getting it. If Shuck was going to be in the lineup everyday, which he's not, he wouldn't be at DH. He would play in the outfield and one of Melky or Avi would DH. Playing Shuck at DH eliminates the ability to use him as a defensive substitute late in games. Agree. if Shuck were going to be in the lineup, Garcia/Melky would be the DH that day. When Thompson played for LaRoche, Thompson didn't DH. Him being in the lineup moved a lesser defensive guy to DH. Same would happen with Shuck.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 08:13 AM) Probably would have to eat at least half his money, but not a bad idea. I do think the Sox need to be talking to the Dodgers. Their ability to absorb contracts puts a lot of things on the table. If they will take Danks or LaRoche or both in another deal, let them trade him to Pittsburgh. Puig for Q, LaRoche, and Danks. Decline Alexei's option and think about how much $$$ you have to play with. Yeah either try Alvarez for LaRoche + cash (Pirates seem to value some defense at first, LaRoche has already played there, and each only have a year left until free agency) or as mentioned: Quintana + LaRoche for Puig with Dodgers taking on all of LaRoche's one year remaining deal. I would prefer the deal with Pit and then moving Q for strictly MLB ready/productive bats however.
  16. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:50 PM) The thing with trading Quintana is your should get multiple top prospects back to fill multiple positions. The farm system is thin still and trading a bunch of prospects to get one bats is the wrong way of going. One bat is not going to fix the linup with to many holes. Plus those prospects listed are not going to get you a big bat that's needed. I know I kinda just tossed it out as an example because I don't see anyone from rotation getting dealt (again: unless its for a haul) nor Anderson or Fulmer getting dealt. Also free agency isn't very appealing so I don't see how we can make a lot of moves (what other people on here are predicting).
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:32 PM) Jays 3-1. Be great if Stroman looks good What a shot in the arm it was getting him back after being out all season.
  18. QUOTE (daggins @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:27 PM) Q: Do you think Erik Johnson could bring back one of the following: Marcell Ozuna Brad Miller Just tossing out ideas. I could see something like that. For a guy who may need a change of scenery.
  19. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:29 PM) Too you I might be misinterpreting it myself, but I think he's saying your comment "it is an opinion" is a fact. Like we all have our own. Edit: just saw his above post, guess I was wrong lol
  20. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:19 PM) It's the same with Blackhawks fans, honestly. I'm wearing my Toews sweater right now, but I totally appreciate that our fanbase is bloated and mostly hockey garbage. lol that's true the Hawks fan base is a pile of garbage. I know there are fans out there that played a little hockey and loved the Hawks forever growing up but then there's the rest of the fanbase.
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:17 PM) I know some knowledgeable fans who aren't dicks and it'd be nice to see them win it for them. But my god, the amount of bandwagon Cubs fans and their total douchebaggery outweighs my desire to see my Cubs friends happy. Every fanbase of every sports team has knowledgable and douchebag fans.
  22. Rally time. Let's see some fight
  23. At the end of the day, it's really just a game. Nothing to get really upset about (unless you really have nothing going on in your life in which case I'm sorry for you haha)
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:08 PM) I will never understand why a Sox fan would want Cubs to win. Basically the only thing the Sox franchise has over Cubs fans is a more recent title I mean I don't really care if they do or not. Just another of the other 29 teams that are not the Sox so its kinda whatever. I just watch and enjoy baseball.
  25. I'm going Jays for this post-season. I guess my order is: 1. Jays 2. Astros 3. Mets 4. Royals (make our division look good) 5. Cubs (despite having some annoying friends, I do have some good friends that are big fan I wouldn't mind them winning for them. And my mom has always been a die-hard) 6. Rangers 7. Dodgers 8. Cardinals (I don't hate them but they've won enough)
