  1. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 11:50 AM) Yes. Neither have anything left to prove at AAA. The Sox are likely to be terrible, so may as well give them as much PT as possible to see if we have anything before moving on. Not like service time is a concern with those 2. Put up or shut up time. True. Unless the light bulb suddenly turns on for one of them, they're really nothing more than filler to keep the seat warm for Moncada. But that's fine in a tank year I guess.
  2. What's the point of carrying both Leury and Yolmer? Aren't they redundant? Is it just because both are out of options?
  3. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) How do you get 5 bench guys? Davidson as DH and Narvaez as C. Bench: Leury, Sanchez, Soto and Asche. I forgot about DH, my bad.
  4. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) Yep. At this point looks like we're pretty much down to the last position player between Asche and Liriano. Have to imagine Davidson, Leury and Sanchez will all break camp with the team as they're out of options. You think they'll carry 5 guys on the bench (including the backup catcher)? Seems unlikely to me.
  5. Not sure Gonzalez in Fenway would be a smart idea for Boston but he wouldn't cost a ton either. Maybe Swihart and a lottery ticket for him?
  6. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 08:00 AM) He's a professional broadcaster that is well versed in multiple sports and went to school for his craft. He is inherently more qualified than the current version of Hawk. Now if Hawk were the analyst, that'd be different. I grew up with Hawk like everyone else did. He takes over broadcasts though and minimizes Steve Stone. The Hawk schtick has run its course as far as the broadcast is concerned. The home games sound like a modern baseball broadcast. The road games are two guys doing separate games because of their dislike for working with the other on most nights. What does being well versed in other sports have to do with a being a baseball announcer though? And I don't know about you but I feel like Steve is much more arrogant when he's with Benetti than Hawk.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) Frazier you trade for pretty much anything you can get. He has zero trade value. Same with Abreu. I don't even know where to start with this.
  8. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 19, 2017 -> 09:56 PM) Sure. One guy is good at his job and the other is Ken Harrelson How is Benetti good at his job? I don't consider the same corny jokes over and over again and Sox math to make him "good".
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 12:08 PM) I think what this thread proves is a team's PBP guy, with a few exceptions, is pretty much like the President. Half love them, half hate them. Agreed. I know I'm in the minority regarding my favorable view of Hawk, but his emotion and excitement in the booth when the team is doing well is so fun to listen to...as is his rants and sadness when the team isn't doing well. Benetti just isn't like that. You can't tell if the Sox are up 10-0 or down 10-0 on any particular night when he's announcing. It's the same corny jokes and dime a dozen announcing that any other team has. Hawk is unique and I love him for that very reason despite his flaws.
  10. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 11:40 AM) While I can appreciate his Sox homerism, I grew tired of his constant complaining about the umps years ago. He's the biggest reason I listen to the radio while watching the TV on mute. I wish him nothing but the best but IMHO it's time to move on. I dislike the Farmer/DJ combo a lot more than Benetti. Farmer seems so monotonous and DJ is just boring.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 07:17 AM) Hawk is, today at least, an awful announcer. He throws in a constant stream of drawl-tinged one-liners that got old a decade ago pretty constantly, leaves huge gaps of silence when he's not in a good mood, and utterly refuses to acknowledge most any useful statistical measures. He spends half his broadcasts telling old war stories, and they're the same ones. My question is, what is he actually good at? I will say that when the team is doing well, he's obviously very excited about it and that helps bring the fans in emotionally. I think that's his only positive quality in the job, to be honest. That's a fair assessment. I disagree, but I see where you're coming from. I don't think anyone can deny that Hawk's announcing talents have gradually gotten worse (even since I've been a fan since 2005), but his health and eyesight is probably starting to go unfortunately which is out of his control. But I've grown up with Hawk announcing Sox games and his presence on the broadcast is one of the most unique and fun things about being a Sox fan in my opinion. I'm not saying Benetti is bad...I just don't particularly care for him. He's just a prototypical announcer. There's nothing unique about him.
  12. Can one of the Anti-Hawk and Pro-Benetti people please explain why they dislike Hawk and like Benetti?
  13. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 02:44 PM) Why can't the blue print for a trade look similar to the Sale deal? What did we get, 2 A's, a B, and a C? If we end up pulling the trigger on an A and 3 B's, I wouldn't be upset. Exactly. A - Torres, Rutherford B - Andujar C - Tate It's quite simple.
  14. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 11:41 AM) That's considerably more than the Sox got for Sale in my opinion. Eh, maybe slightly more. But Q's value should be nearly identical to Sale. The Yankees probably wouldn't do that but I think a package like the one I proposed is fair for a player of Q's caliber.
  15. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 11:37 AM) Rutherford headlined deals are insane in my opinion Look at what we got for Sale and Eaton and to think we'd cave on Quintana is nuts With all eyes on him he shut down the stacked USA lineup at the WBC and looked in midseason form Agreed. I have also seen deals headlined by Jorge Mateo which I think is crazy. Either the deal starts with Torres or Frazier AND Rutherford. If the Yankees aren't willing to do that, then it's their loss.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) More like soxtalk has been proposing trades for over a year with the best of the best prospects that getting a top 25 prospect and top 50 prospect are trades with "no ascertainable headliner" I don't know man, I've seen plenty of cringeworthy offers for Q as of late.
  17. I love Miller Park. I just don't know if it's worth going up there for an exhibition game.
  18. QUOTE (shipps @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 10:32 AM) You can think you want this more until a couple of those elite guys bust or get injured then you might rethink that philosophy. Especially when out of the 20 "decent" prospects you might wind up with 8-9 really good to elite ML players. I dont think either way is a bad way or one way better than the other. I'm seeing so many people proposing Q trade packages with no ascertainable headliner. What's the point of trading one of the best assets in baseball for organizational depth? Give me 2 elite prospects at the very least if Q is being discussed. Maybe Hahn can settle for depth when he trades guys like Frazier and Melky, but he definitely can't settle on Q. He's in the drivers seat without a doubt.
  19. I see all these posts/tweets about wanting the Sox farm system to be balanced. I don't know about you guys, but I'd much rather have a top 5 farm system with 7-8 elite prospects than a top 5 farm system with 20 decent ones. I'd much rather have elite talent at the top than balance.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 10:19 AM) Well technically the $68 million was ripped up. But have you seen how little the free agents who have signed 9 figure contracts have made their teams better and title contenders. Their choice in recent years was not to sign these guys and get called cheap, or sign these guys, be on the hook for 9 figures and get called dumb. Did anyone really think the Angels were stupid to sign Pujols when they signed him? They would have been better off having their fanbase call them cheap. If Machado or a different premier free agent was the last piece to make this team a title contender for the foreseeable future, why wouldn't the Sox sign him no matter the cost? Look at the Cubs with Lester. They paid a fortune for him and his contract will likely be an albatross later, but he helped them win now. I don't see why the Sox should operate any differently if the rebuild starts to show positive results at some point. Free agency is part of the game and the Sox need to use it to their advantage, especially from the offensive side.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 10:13 AM) Take ARods deal and start multiplying. Machado is going to be making $35-40 million a year if not more for a long, long time. To think the White Sox will pay it is most likely a pipedream. And calling them cheap or not interesting in winning if they don't is ridiculous as well. I'm sure they would love to have him. Also keep in mind if many of the team's prospects pan out, they are going to eventually have to be paid as well. How else would you describe them considering they haven't given a free agent more than $68 million? And they clearly haven't been interested in winning as of late. They would've signed Cespedes and Desmond instead of the bargain bin free agents they did if that was the case.
  22. Torres, Rutherford, Andujar, and Tate. I think that's fair.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 09:06 AM) This. I know we are rebuilding, and somehow that changes everything, but I don't see the White Sox outbidding the rest of MLB for a $250 million contract. The Sox will have literally no expensive contracts on the books after the 2018 season once Q/Shields/Robertson/Melky/Frazier/Jones are gone. Probably 75% of the team will be making league minimum or close to it. I don't see any way how they wouldn't be able to afford Machado. It's just a matter if Jerry will pay up to get a premier free agent for once.
