You can kiss him goodbye after 2023 then. Moncada is going to be a star, the time to lock him up long term is now. The longer they wait, the more expensive he will be.
If this gets done, the Sox will have a legit 6 or 7 year window of contention. While I see your argument, I’m fine with the deal even if it’s not “team friendly”
Even if the 9/$171M figure is true, that’s only $19M a year for a guy who will be in his prime for pretty much the entire contract. Sign me up for that.
There’s not much risk in this deal at all though. They’re essentially paying him slightly more than $3 million a year for the next 5 years. If he sucks by the end of the contract they just won’t pick up the club options. I like it.
