  1. QUOTE (Tony @ Apr 13, 2018 -> 09:59 AM) I also heard DeBartolo LOVED having a pen pal, so we kinda missed out there, too. Stupid Reinsdorf..... Have you noticed that JR has disappeared from the scene? He use to appear on TV and radio and would grant interviews with the papers. No more. He has been MIA for a long time.
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 13, 2018 -> 08:32 AM) Of course you dont doubt it, you believe anyone if they tell you they are great and reinsdorf is terrible. I don't think JR is terrible. I think he's a great owner. After all the team has been at the bottom in the standings, attendance and TV ratings fro years. What more could any White Sox fan want from an owner? season tickets would be free for the fans that loved Eddie the most
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 13, 2018 -> 08:14 AM) Yea I’m sure Debartolo would have totally built a stadium with his own money I don't doubt it for a minute that DeBartolo would have built his own stadium. He made his fortune building shopping centers. I heard one of the writers from the Tribune on radio say that the new stadium would have been built next to a shopping center somewhere in the western suburbs.
  4. There's a new book out published by the Chicago Tribune called A Decade by Decade History of the Chicago White Sox. Lots of interesting photos of past White Sox players and teams. I think one of the most interesting items in the book is how it tells that Edward DeBartolo wanted to buy the White Sox from Bill Veeck. The AL owners thought he might move the team out of state and he agreed to put in writing that he would keep the team in the Chicagoland area AND build a new stadium WITH HIS OWN MONEY. The AL owners still rejected his bid to buy the team. They then wound up approving JR as the owner, who in a few years threatened and almost moved the team to Florida. Having JR acquire the White Sox instead of DeBartolo has to be one of the worse things to ever happen to the White Sox franchise.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 11, 2018 -> 12:23 PM) Forbes valuations came out today. Yankees $4 billion. Sox $1.5 billion. Not bad. Maybe JR will sell the team now. $1.5 billion is a lot of moola.
  6. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 10, 2018 -> 08:33 PM) Who do you think should be in charge, and why? Go. Last year I heard thru the grapevine that Hahns contract was going to be expired. I really thought he wouldn't be renewed. turns out I was wrong. But I really thought Hahn wouldn't be back. I figured afte 5 years of the team being "Mired In Mediocrity" he would be gone. I remember when Larry Himes was the GM for a few years. He drafted well and made some good trades and the team won 94 games in 1990. JR showed his appreciation after the season by not renewing his contract. JR even blasted Himes in the media saying he wasn't the man for the job and he didn't think he could bring the team from point C to point A. The White Sox almost made the Playoffs in 2012 and after the season JR made Hahn the GM. He has taken this team from Point C to almost Point Z. I thought Hahn wouldn't be back so I wrote JR a letter. I've had contact via the mail since 1981 with JR. At times he has responded to me. He has even help me acquire some items for my White Sox memorabilia collection. I wrote him a letter last year and told him if Hahn is not going to be rehired, I would like to interviewed for the job as the new GM. I'm not only a life long White Sox fan (something Hahn isn't), I think I'm a good evaluater of MLB talent If I was the GM of the team for 5 years and was as unsuccessful as Hahn has been I would walk out the door and hang my head in shame. I didn't get a response from JR to my letter.
  7. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Apr 10, 2018 -> 08:23 PM) You do know the Sox are in the middle of a rebuild, right? Right, and the thing that scares me is Hahn is the one in charge of the rebuild.
  8. QUOTE (Scoots @ Apr 10, 2018 -> 07:14 PM) Regarding Rick Hahn, if this re-build does not work (See 2020), then I guaruntee you no one will love him. Right now it is a waiting game. And it is extremely difficult to remain patient. We are used to watching Sox teams that are SUPPOSED to win and don't. That's why we (including myself) are reacting this way. Except, this team isn't SUPPOSED to win. Hahn and co has even hinted at it himself. We are not supposed to win for a couple more years. Better get the popcorn and watch these players develop. My hope is in 2 years we will be saying (damn remember that 2018 season...I can't believe we watched that s***!!!) Yeah this team isn't suppose to win but still this looks like a out and out DISASTER. This team looks like it can rival the 1962 Mets team for losses. (They lost 120 games that season) Hahn has been here for 6 seasons, seasons "Mired in Mediocrity" as he has said. His contract should have never been renewed last year.
  9. 1) I never thought I would see a White Sox team as bad as the 1970 White Sox team, a team that lost 106 games. This 2018 White Sox team looks as bad so far this season. This team looks like it could easily lose over 100 games. When you have a starting rotation with only one starter with a ERA under 5.00 you're in trouble. 2) The thing that I simply can't understand is this lovefest some White Sox fans have for Rick Hahn. This is his 6th year as GM. He has yet to have one team with a winning record. The team has been near the bottom in standings, attendance, and Tv ratings during his 6 years. The Chicago Tribune doesn't even have beat reporter covering the team on a full time basis. After the 1970 season the White Sox made major changes in their management team. They brought in Roland Hemond and he helped turn things around. If this team continues to lose games I'm hoping there are some major changes in the front office at the end of the season. If Rick Hahn had been a GM for most other MLB teams and been this unsuccessful he would have been gone by now. 3) Both Abreu and Avi Garcia have indicated they would like to remain here with Chicago. I really wonder if that is true. I would like to think they wouldn't be too heartbroken going to a contending team. Chris Sale, Adam Eaton and Jose Quintana don't miss the White Sox one bit. I couldn't blame Abreu and Avi Garcia if they wanted out of here.
  10. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 10:16 AM) I get what you're saying but it's possible he didn't attend that one. I was at the 1991 Opening Day. It was bad but the game was a blowout. The White Sox were never in the game. Yesterdays game should have been won by the White Sox.
  11. 1)Yesterday was my 48th Opening Day. I've been to good games, and bad games on Opening Day. Yesterdays loss was easily the ugliest loss on Opening Day that I have attended. The bullpen blowing the game and the terrible defensive play by L. Garcia was really ugly. 2)When Hahn Traded Robertson, Jennings Kahnle and Swarzak last season he left the team with one of the worse bullpens in the history of the team. At best I thought he might improve the bullpen this off season. I think its fair to say that this bullpen has not been improved. 3) I can't help but wonder if the game plan with this team is to have another bad season which will result in another high draft choice and a even lower team payroll. The White Sox are 28th in payroll and it could probably in lower next year. 4) One of my major beefs against Rick Hahn is his signing players who are not any good and paying and wasting millions of dollars on them. LaRoche, Keppinger, Holland and now Soria were all acquired By Hahn. All of them didn't produce and were paid millions of dollars. 5) Attendance. It was certainly cold at the game yesterday and I'm sure it didn't make anybody come to the game as a walkup. Still to only have 33,000 at the home opener is not exactly anything to be happy about. Most Opening Day tickets are usually sold out weeks in advance. This tells me more and more people are not buying into this rebuild. Yesterdays crowd might be the biggest crowd of the year. 6) I see this so called rebuild going on for years. I wish that JR would sell the team.
  12. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 09:45 PM) So he.. sucks? He not only sucks but trading our best bullpen man (David Robertson) for him was nuts. Is there anybody in this bullpen as good as Robertson?
  13. The Sun Times had a list of MLB team payrolls for 2018 in todays paper. The White Sox were listed as being 28th with a team payroll of $73 million dollars. Obviously they can spend some money if they want to. We shall see if they actually do that.
  14. Positive: After another losing season. Hahn is finally no longer the White Sox GM. 6 Seasons of being "Mired in Mediocrity" is even too much for JR. Hahns contract won't be renewed after the 2018 season.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 26, 2018 -> 10:12 PM) Someone was talking about fans would get really upset if they "wasted" the money on a one year deal...but I said that nobody cared much at all about Holland's $6 million year deal last year, with no return on investment. If fans complained about the $6 million paid to Holland, I wonder how people are going to feel about paying $9 million to Joakim Soria.
  16. QUOTE (Lillian @ Feb 26, 2018 -> 01:17 PM) I mentioned this several weeks ago, but I question whether Machado would really be worth what he is likely to get paid. The argument is that his OBP is not, nor has it ever been, so far in his career, at a level that justifies $35 Million per year, on a 10 year contract. He is very young, so he may improve his OBP this season, which could change the equation. Guys like Miguel Cabrera, Bryce Harper, Joey Votto and Mike Trout have had OBP's of .400 plus, since their early 20's. Machado has yet to demonstrate the ability to do that. Something else, which no one ever mentions is that a player who gets paid that much money could have an adverse effect upon the rest of the team. It's only natural for players to compare themselves to other players, in terms of their own production and what they get paid. That becomes most important, when it comes time to negotiate a new contract. If a team is going to pay one player that much more than any of the rest of its roster, he better demonstrate that he deserves it. We are all entitled to our opinion, and if you disagree, please consider these thoughts just things to think about. I could be persuaded to change my opinion, but that's just my perspective. Hey, when a team is considering spending that kind of money, it behooves them to think about everything. Don't worry about Machado coming to the White Sox. He will sign elsewhere.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 12:17 PM) FWIW there is no discussion about banning anyone right now. Being an Eeyore and saying the same untrue thing over and over isn’t a personal attack on anyone at Soxtalk. And I doubt Reinsdorfs feelings are hurt Rick Morrissey has a rather interesting column in todays Sun Times. He thinks this so called rebuild is just another word for tanking. He doesn't buy into this tanking. He thinks its bad for sports in general. I happen to agree with him. I think this White Sox rebuild/tanking is wrong.
  18. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Feb 24, 2018 -> 04:31 PM) Cheap rebuild? Could you list all the "expensive" rebuilds? I despise JR as much as anyone but they're absolutely not going to have a 50m payroll with a (hopefully) bunch of young stars. It would be stupid to spend money right now when you don't know what your holes are going to be. The goal should be a young core with a couple spots to fill and a ton of money to spend, aka - the exact spot the Sox are currently in. The bad guys spent some serious money on their rebuild when they signed Lester, Heyward and Zobrist. That is not going to happen with the White Sox.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2018 -> 04:05 PM) Their payroll in 2019 counting even Abreu, Garcia, and Arbitration guys is about $40-$45 million. If they don't spend anything next offseason, there was little point to this rebuild.Hate to be negative about this but I still think the White Sox will have a much lower payroll in 2019. Low payroll =more moola for JR and his investors. This so called rebuild is going to be a very cheap rebuild. And I don't think Shields or Avi Garcia will be on the team in 2019.
  20. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 24, 2018 -> 02:38 PM) I stole this idea from JustBelieveIt, but why not pick up Logan Morrison to DH for us? Dude is only 30 years old & would provide us with a cheap left-handed power bat for the middle of our lineup. His last season and half has been incredibly productive as shown by the stats below: PA: 730 BB %: 12.5% K %: 24.5% ISO: .267 HR: 44 Slash: .246/.348/.513/.861 wRC+: 129 MLBtraderumors also had a nice piece on him not too long go that provides additional reasons for optimism: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/some...n-morrison.html I don’t know, seems like if he could repeat the level of production I noted above he might actually net us something of value at the deadline. Plus he’s young enough to theoretically be a cheap placeholder until someone like Sheets is ready. I really think it’s a move worth considering. Because the White Sox are not going to spend the money this year nor next year.
  21. QUOTE (Lillian @ Feb 22, 2018 -> 09:09 PM) I agree with Caulfield. If this rebuild goes right, the Sox will have a lot of really good players, at most of the key positions. They need a respectable left handed bat, more than they need a top 5 player. No team has All Stars at every position. Not that Moustakas couldn't be an All Star again. You add his bat and Eloy's, in 2019 and this team could be very competitive, if the pitching is ready. Then you have that future outfield of Eloy, Robert, Adolfo and Rutherford or Basabe, all ready to take over, in 2020 or 2021, if you trade Avi. Again, I don't see the need to spend $350 Million, or more, on Machado. There is now way JR is going to spend $350 million on a player. I'm hoping Moustakas signs with the White Sox, but then again I don't think JR is going to spend the money. This so called rebuild is going to done as cheaply as possible.
  22. QUOTE (Lillian @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 03:29 PM) Projected line up, vs RHP, for 2019: 2B Moncada LH LF Avi 1B Abreu 3B Moustakas LH RF Eloy C Castillo SS Anderson DH Delmonico LH CF Engel, Leury, Tilson?????? That line up could score a lot of runs and provide decent defense. I like your lineup. Hopefully the White Sox will sign him.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 18, 2018 -> 09:22 PM) No thread is dumb. Nobody should be banned. As far as the topic, no big deal. Moncada is the 2Bman and like somebody said, interviews that use translators aren't very good to begin with. One of the reasons I like SoxTalk over the other White Sox sites is because fans can be very open expressing their opinions. White Sox Interactive has banned a number of people I know for making comments that their administrators considered offensive. I was banned their recently for a week because they they didn't like my comments about Hahn and the White Sox organization. Even tho they lifted my ban I don't think I will post there anymore.
  24. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Feb 13, 2018 -> 08:36 PM) This is total and complete nonsense. That's the polite way of putting it. JR WILL NOT SELL, he's said that repeatedly, publicly. He is keeping this team until he is dead then his family will put it up for sale, period. End of discussion. Tax purposes basically prohibit him from selling the club while he is alive. JR is a tax expert, he knows the rules and the loopholes. Why is that so hard for you to understand, honest question...not trying to be snarky. I don't care much for JR myself, but he's bought in on the rebuild and the money WILL BE THERE starting next year. No guarantees they get anybody to sign with them but the offers will be out on the table and they will be aggressive. What will be your opinion come Opening Day 2019 and the White Sox payroll is next to nothing?
  25. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 13, 2018 -> 07:38 PM) Hmmm, interesting that the Tribune Company executed the exact opposite strategy when they sold the Cubs. And why does having no money on the books increase the team’s overall value? 90% of potential owners are buying a team because they want to actually win a championship. Therefore, I’d think most of these guys would prefer having a quality team in place rather than having limited payroll commitments. And do you know what would really improve the team’s value? How about a new TV deal that provides this new owner with significant fixed income. That’s going to be nearly impossible if their plan is to cut payroll even further next season. The good news is your theory makes zero sense and I’m 99.9% it will never happen. What makes you think this team is going to get a big TV deal? They can't even get a radio deal now.
