Cumulus Media trying to drop White Sox/Bulls from WLS
InTheDriversSeat replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yes, All News 105.9 WCFS-FM Elmwood Park / Chicago (simulcast of AM 780 WBBM) is another possibility. The company that owns Newsradio, Entercom (formerly CBS) already has the rights to the Bears (WBBM / WCFS-FM) and Cubs (WSCR), so they would have 4 Chicago teams, if the White Sox and Bulls are added. I remember in 2015, the one season when WBBM carried Cubs games, baseball aired only on AM 780 while FM 105.9 continued with All News. In your example, that would be just the opposite (All News airing on AM, Bulls and White Sox airing on FM). Presently, Chicago Bears games are simulcast on both AM and FM. Probably the Bulls & Sox would prefer to air on AM 780 (if only one band is available), due to the extended reach of the 50,000 watt signal at night to many states far away from Chicago. The White Sox previously aired on 780 WBBM during the 1980 and 1981 seasons. And the Bulls aired one season on 105.9, in 2006 - 2007 when that station had a Talk format as WCKG. Perhaps an announcement will be made this week. . -
Cumulus Media trying to drop White Sox/Bulls from WLS

Merlin Media, the company that actually owns WLUP and WKQX, has indicated that it will operate the stations after Cumulus gets approval from the bankruptcy judge to back out of the arrangement. My guess is that the Bulls and White Sox may be talking to Randy Michaels (the man in charge of Merlin Media). I may be totally wrong, but I don't see many possibilities for the Bulls & Sox to land on any other big music-orientend FM station in Chicago. Perhaps the Bulls could go to the new Rap Oldies station owned by Entercom (formerly CBS), '104.3 Jams' WBMX (formerly Classic Hits 'K-Hits' WJMK). http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-...0119-story.html . -
Cumulus Media trying to drop White Sox/Bulls from WLS
InTheDriversSeat replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
My guess is that could be 97.9 WLUP 'The Loop'. Most major market FM music stations that are owned by big broadcasting corporations and subscribe to Arbitron (or whatever the ratings service is named now nowadays), are not going to pre-empt nonstop music formats for any sports play-by-play. But Randy Michaels, the man in charge of Merlin Media, the company that is about to regain ownership and control of WLUP and WKQX, is known to think outside the box. He supports non-music, spoken word programming on FM. I remember that some Stanley Cup hockey playoffs, also football aired a couple years ago on WLUP and All News WIQI (now WKQX) when Randy Michaels was in charge. I'm located north of Lake Cook Road, right in the center of Lake County (Illinois), and WLS comes in just fine using a $20 radio. I listened to 5 hours of the Soxfest live broadcast today (from 10 AM to 3 PM), with no problems. Plus, I'm sure if I drive anywhere in the suburbs west Interstate 355 (which runs from Itasca to New Lenox), I could easily hear WLS in my car. Perhaps your reception problem is because you are located in McHenry County, which is quite a distance from the WLS transmitter at Tinley Park. Also, if you have a cell phone charger in your vehicle, don't plug it in while listening to AM. There are high performance AM radios made by C. Crane which will solve everything for you when listening indoors, but that doesn't help your reception problem in your car. Well then the Bears, Blackhawks, and Bulls are "complete jokes" too because those teams do not air on Sports Talk stations either. Chicago Bears - WBBM / WCFS-FM (format: All News), Chicago Blackhawks - WGN (format: Talk), Chicago Bulls - WLS (format: Talk). . -

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 10:00 AM) This is my dream come true. I HATE the Sox being on WLS. The reception is terrible even on the eastern side of Schaumburg and there is virtually no talk of the Sox outside of the games and White Sox Weekly podcast. The White Sox need to be on a sports station. I'm sick of the Score, which has turned into WCUB. I heard Bernstein and Bruce Levine discussing the White Sox yesterday and almost fainted. Put the White Sox back on ESPN 1000. Please. You should be able to receive WLS with no problem in Schaumburg. The station is a clear channel, transmitting with 50,000 watts. Might be a problem with your radio. Actually WLS did alot of talking and cross-promoting about the White Sox during the station's 3 live & local shows: John Howell and Ray Stevens, Bob and Marianne, and Steve Dahl, who is a huge White Sox fan. WLS had many video interviews with players on the station's website. There is 'White Sox Weekly' which airs at 12 Noon every Sunday year round for free on the radio (not just a podcast). WLS broadcasted live from Soxfest at 2016 and 2017, and the station is supposed to be at Soxfest again this weekend despite everything that is going on right now. For most seasons in White Sox history, the team has aired on radio stations which did not have a Sports Talk format. Doesn't bother me. But I would agree that AM 1000 WMVP (ESPN Radio) is the most likely choice where the Sox could end up in 2018, although there are several other possibilities. . -
Dustin Fowler suing White Sox for injury
InTheDriversSeat replied to Sockin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I see the right knee hitting the padded wall, not the box. The box appears to be a few inches behind the wall (not even with the wall), therefore both legs make contact with the wall. When he makes impact with the wall, his left arm reaches out far enough so his left hand is in front of the box. If had struck the box initially, his body would be obstructing view of the box, but actually his body (except for his left hand) is to the right side of the box. . -
Dustin Fowler suing White Sox for injury
InTheDriversSeat replied to Sockin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see Fowler hitting the box at all. Both of his legs appear to collide with the wall and horizontal pipe (both padded), to the right of the box. Go to 0:27 at this link: Furthermore, it appears that the box is not in the field of play. Technically, the box is located in the seats, although very close to the field. The metal box looks like it is located a few inches behind the padded sections. The seats are not padded either. My understanding is that any player who enters the seating section is entering under his own risk. I learned that Dustin Fowler normally does not play Right Field. His regular position is Center Field. To me, looks like there was no possiblity of anyone catching that foul ball. His lack of experience in RF contributed to his decision to not slow down prior to colliding with the wall. I wonder if MLB has an agreement with the player's union which limits the liability placed on home teams and their facilities? (similar as to the information printed on the back of a ticket when a fan gets injured from sitting in the seats) I'm not a lawyer, but if there is already is a contract in place regarding injury liabilities, Dustin Fowler may not have much of a case. . -
OK, you're right. But Sling did not have 'CSN Comcast SportsNet Chicago' when the service started. Apparently the channel was added to the lineup on April 2nd, 2017. The change was made after competing services were offering the channel but Sling did not at originally. .
-
You are right, so I stand corrected. But Sling, the service that gets mentioned often doesn't. It would be nice if the website for 'NBC Sports Chicago' (formerly 'CSN Comcast SportsNet Chicago') would list the over-the-top internet services that include 'NBC Sports Chicago' in their lineups, but they don't. I suspect the reason is that the internet services compete with regular Comcast / xfinity cable, which is the same company as 'NBC Sports Chicago'. http://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/channel-finder I did some checking of the various over-the-top internet services to find out which ones have 'NBC Sports Chicago' in their lineups, and here is what I found: DirecTV Now - No? fubo TV - Yes hulu - Yes philo - ? PlayStation Vue - Yes sling - No Spectrum TV Stream - ? xfinity Instant TV - Yes? YouTube TV - Yes These services are way to save money compared to regular cable TV or a dish. Plus, in some locations outside of the Chicago area where the cable company may not provide 'NBC Sports Chicago', and where DirecTV and Dish Network do provide 'NBC Sports Chicago', but the viewer is not allowed to install a dish or can not receive a signal using a dish. .
-
I believe PlayStation Vue is the only internet streaming service that provides 'NBC Sports Chicago' (the Regional Sports Network formerly known as 'Comcast SportsNet Chicago'). Not to be confused with 'NBC SN' (formerly Versus, and 'Outdoor Life Network' before that), the national cable sports network that is available on most streaming services. If you are getting 'NBC Sports Chicago', I believe no White Sox or Cubs games are ever blacked out but Bulls and Blackhawks telecasts can be for viewers outside the Chicago area. .
-
The monthly cost would go up if PlayStation Vue were to provide more local TV stations because the stations would want compensation. Of course you could easily watch WGN-TV for free in HD in the Chicago area by connecting an antenna to your TV. Rabbit ears will work nicely if you are in the city or nearby suburbs. .
-
Nobody that is located in the 'White Sox / Cubs Zone' (all of Iowa, most of Illinois, most of Indiana, small part of Wisconsin) can watch live White Sox games on MLB.tv. Is 'PlayStation Vue' available in your area? 'PlayStation Vue' is an internet streaming service which connects to your TV, similar to Sling. But unlike Sling, which does not offer NBC Sports Chicago (formerly Comcast SportsNet Chicago), PlayStation Vue does provide NBCSC on it's lineup. I heard that the price is alot cheaper than cable or using a dish. Furthermore, any paying customers of NBC Sports Chicago should be eligible to watch White Sox games live on the NBC Sports App. Regarding the WGN telecasts, I can give you some insight but where in Iowa are you located? .
-
WGN-TV does syndicate White Sox games to local affiliate TV stations in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana that are within the broadcast territory assigned by MLB. .

I recently learned that Ralph Faucher passed away on September 22, 2017 at age 91. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Ralph called White Sox games on radio alongside Harry Caray for the 1971 and 1972 seasons, when he was sportscaster and sales manager at WTAQ. This was the time period when the Sox did not have a big AM station in Chicago to carry games. Instead, Mr. Faucher worked together with the White Sox to create a network of radio stations around Chicago to carry the games. The stations were: FM 105.1 WEAW-FM Evanston / Chicago (transmitting in mono from John Hancock Center) AM 1330 WEAW Evanston (daytime games, weekends only) AM 1300 WTAQ LaGrange FM 103.9 WFVF Dundee FM 106.3 WLNR Lansing FM 96.7 WJOL-FM Joliet Radio affiliates outside the Chicago area were located at: South Bend, Pekin (Peoria), Bloomington IL, Springfield IL, Urbana, and Granite City, IL (St. Louis) Later on, Mr. Faucher became the owner of WTAQ and WFVF. I can not find an obituary online for Mr. Faucher. However, I heard that he retired to Eagle River, Wisconsin, where he worked part time at radio stations AM 950 WERL and FM 94.5 WRJO. For some great, historical pictures of Ralph Faucher together with Harry Caray, Roland Hemond, and Chuck Tanner, go to this link. If the White Sox and Cubs split the series, White Sox get to keep the Crosstown Cup because a tie goes to the winner of the previous year. That's all I care about: keeping the Crosstown Cup! .
