QUOTE (The Gooch @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 12:15 PM) Danks was worthless in 80% of his starts. 15 of his 30 starts were quality starts, and 1 of those other 15 he went 5 2/3 IP and gave up just 1 run against a pretty good Yankee lineup. But sure.

3B is such a deep position in the league right now. That's a great top 10.
-
We have the bullpen depth to make the trade, and Jennings' salary is low enough that we could still make another move.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 05:57 PM) Well the Sox wouldn't sit Dunn against lefties, wouldn't sit Laroche until the very end. So I wouldn't count on that. I think this false narrative that you keep pushing might even be more annoying than your hero one. As pointed out, Dunn was good against lefties in 2012, and he platooned with Konerko in 2014 so your first point is false. LaRoche was platooned once a legit platoon partner appeared (Thompson), which was two months before the end of the season. Before Trayce came up, all the other options sucked as much as LaRoche did. Are you really upset that Beckham or Bonifacio didn't get more playing time early on in the season (and no, before you bring up Soto again, he wasn't a legitimate option)? Conor saw basically no time against LHP last year, and this year we have a catcher platoon that have clear LHP/RHP splits. This idea that Robin doesn't know how/refuses to platoon is bulls***.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 05:36 PM) It's looking like they completely misjudged the market on the big 3 outfielders. Without knowing our offers on the Big 3 I'm withholding strong criticism there (if the Sox had better offers then the Mets/Royals not much could have been done), but if they don't have a backup plan they deserve to be crucified.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 03:35 PM) Do you remember how difficult of a time Gillaspie had with plantar fasciitis? It's even more risky for an outfielder and likely why the Rockies signed Parra and traded Dickerson. Quentin had a rough time with it as well.
-
That minor league pitcher better be pretty good, what are the Rockies doing.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 02:42 PM) Agreed, and I know I've said this elsewhere, but I'm not that concerned about stacking up with draft picks right now. If the Sox decide to blow it up in a year or so, Sale/Q can restock the system immediately. Rather see what this core of players can do with another above average player on the roster. I agree. If the Sox flop again this year, then with next offseason's extremely thin SP market the Sox should be able to get a couple Shelby Miller-type packages and instantly make the farm look pretty good.
-
If it involves Dickerson then you can pretty much call off the potential Soler to Rays trade that fathom posted about, meaning Fowler to the Cubs would look far less likely. EDIT: There it is.
-
Looks like they deleted it, unless it's just not showing up for me.

So Latos gets at least $10-12 million, right?

QUOTE (SoxSteve @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 01:23 PM) And why does he keep bringing up Desmond? 180 strikeouts and 20plus errors a year for a team that already has too many strikeouts and errors is insane. Desmond is poster child for what's wrong with us. His name should not even be mentioned in the same sentence with the SOX. PERIOD! 19 teams struck out more than the White Sox did in 2015.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 11:44 AM) Damn. To not even have a beat guy from ESPN for Sox baseball kind of sucks in a way. Not that they gave any huge insight but the fact that Sox interest and journalism in general reaching new lows all the time. Not that ESPN Chicago was necessarily guilty of this, but I go back and forth all the time whether I want more or less Sox coverage from the media (especially locally). On one hand I get annoyed that the Sox get little to no attention, but on the other hand the little attention they do get is often accompanied by snark or needless comparisons to the Cubs (we can't just be our own entity), and that just annoys me further.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 10:53 AM) Speaking of outfielders, Jermaine Dye and Magglio Ordonez both turn 42 today. If you're older than them, you're old, but if you're younger than them, you're young. That's what I tell my wife. I'm not sure whether I'd rather have them right now as the RF or Avi...
-
QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 10:55 AM) I'd keep Eaton leading off due to Fowler's higher K rate, and probably hit LaWhiff 7th. Either way I like this lineup and can see it scoring a lot of runs. I've always hated the "LaDunn" nickname but I like this one.
-
If we're willing to take on almost the entire salary, he should cost less than we what gave up for Lawrie.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) I'm getting anxious. I'm afraid we are not going to get anyone. I can't deal with another Avi season. A month ago I was 100% confident Avi wasn't going to be the starting RF in 2016, but that confidence is eroding more and more every day. And that's with one of most favorable OF markets you're ever going to see.

I can't be the only one not worried about Sale vs. the Twins this year, right? Look up his 2013 stats against the Indians, they're actually worse than his numbers against Minnesota last year. Now look up Sale's ERA against the Indians from 2014-2015, it's pretty good.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 07:29 AM) They would almost definitely be trading Hammel to free up money So that means the Cubs would have to make two trades to fit him in. Seems unlikely, especially if someone moves on him soon.

MLB Prospect Pipeline Top 10 SS Prospects
OmarComing25 replied to maggsmaggs's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 05:25 PM) http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016?list=ss For comparison sake, Cubs prospect Gleyber Torres is at 9. This one really surprises me. There's a lot of great SS prospects right now. MLB.com has Anderson as the #38 prospect overall but as the 13th best SS prospect. -
White Sox interested in SS Ian Desmond

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 02:52 PM) If you have a bad year, you're going to be projected to have another bad one.. Not if you're Jeff Samardzija. Steamer: 3.45 ERA ZiPS: 3.31 ERA -
White Sox interested in SS Ian Desmond

QUOTE (CB2.0 @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 02:15 PM) Now you're just being argumentative for the sake of being argumentative...or disingenuous. There's a big difference between 27 errors (Desmond) and 10 (Cain/Kinsler). That 30% is roughly equivalent to the TOTALS of the guys you try to use as examples. Also, Donaldson's "league leading"18 errors are evenly matched with Lawrie, and just a single error away from guys like Arrenado, Beltre, and Bryant. Yes - context. You can't compare CF and SS by total number of errors, because shortstops in general are always going to have a lot more errors. The point was that Cain had the most errors at his position, but no one is going to say he's a bad or even average defender. Also doesn't your 3B example just help prove my point? Donaldson, Arenado and Beltre all have glowing defensive reputations, yet they were among the league leaders in errors. -
QUOTE (CB2.0 @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 01:55 PM) Yeah, per ZiPS, he's gonna be the 2016 Sox #3 slugger! But this is 438 trips to the plate...that's a pretty big flocking quirk. The projections just spit out numbers for any player who has an even remote chance to see playing time. Viciedo was probably just a mistake, but ZiPS has 476 projected PA for Gerson Montilla and 425 PA for Eudy Pina. I doubt those guys play for the 2016 White Sox either.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 01:37 PM) Well, that's a better ERA than Sale put up last year and a higher OPS than Abreu put up last year. That's a little low for Eaton compared to last year but I get why a projection system would be skeptical that he can put up 2015 type HR numbers again in 2016 when he hadn't hit more than 7 in a season since he got to AA then suddenly he hit 14 last year. The youngsters...always hard to project, could be better or worse in both cases and I wouldn't be surprised. And let's not forget the world just hates Jose Quintana. Yeah I don't see anything that wrong with Eaton or Abreu's projections, especially knowing that projections are conservative by nature. However, I'd be a little more optimistic on Abreu just going by his splits. In 2014 he had a 155 wRC+ against RHP and 203 wRC+ against LHP. In 2015 he had a 144 wRC+ against RHP and 78 wRC+ against LHP. I doubt we'll see 203 wRC+ against LHP again, but that 78 seems really fluky too. I would expect a lot of improvement there, and if he stays the course against RHP, he should be better than last year.

White Sox interested in SS Ian Desmond

QUOTE (CB2.0 @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 01:33 PM) Errors alone are not enough...at least without context. In Desmond's case, he committed the most in his league last year, and the next closest guy committed nearly 30% less. I think its pretty safe to say you're not very good defensively in that context, without the need for an in-depth advanced defensive stat analysis. Lorenzo Cain led all CF in errors last year, and his total was 30% higher than the next guy too. Ian Kinsler is among the leaders in errors at 2B every year. Josh Donaldson has the most errors of any 3B over the last 3 years. Errors need context.
