QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 12:11 PM) Believing Trayce should be a part of the team next year does not mean you believe he'll be an all star. But we have very crappy players. Thank you. Wanting Trayce to play doesn't mean assuming he'll put up a .900 OPS again, he doesn't have a very high bar to clear to be one of our three best options for the OF at this point, barring spending a lot of money in FA or giving up assets through a trade.

Well, it's that time of year again....2015 edition

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 11:39 AM) Agree. What does everyone think it would take to get Longoria? Danish, Montas, Anderson, Michaelczewski? The only way I'd deal someone like Anderson was if it was for someone with lots of control left Not sure I want Longoria anymore. His bat has fallen off a lot the last two seasons and he's about to be on the wrong side of 30. In the right deal I'd take him but being the face of the Rays right now he'd probably cost too much for it to be worth it. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) 134 PA is not a lot to go on. Look at Viciedo's at a much younger age. What I don't get is the posts that say, "I don't care if he hits .230, his defense in CF...". Yes, they do care if he hits .230. Brian Anderson was advanced stat-wise one of the greatest CFs defensively who ever lived in 2006, and he hit .225, and he wound up benched, and everyone cared he hit .225 even though the team had an offense that could cover .225 a heck of a lot better than the 2016 White Sox unless Hahn has the greatest winter ever, and everything goes more than right next year with the bats. Difference is Anderson put up a .650 OPS and a wRC+ of 62 and OPS+ of 65 when he hit .225, and that was during a year when offense was a lot easier to come by. For comparison's sake, in 2015 Angel Pagan put up a wRC+ of 81 and an OPS+ of 77 despite a .635 OPS. In September/October Trayce hit .233 but put up a wRC+ of 99 and an OPS of .732. I don't think anyone would complain if he put up those numbers with that average (in fact, we'd be ecstatic). Not saying he's likely to put up those numbers, but I'm willing to give him a shot.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 05:39 AM) Lol - oh yeah? What "signs"? What "signs point to a burst in the rights bubble" the Cubs are pursuing? And while you're at it, do tell how on god's green earth the next Sox deal on CSN will somehow be "richer" than the one the Cubs are on target to achieve? I mean, if anything, the way things are going, Theo and Tommy are getting set to leave Jerry & Club Loyalty in their dust with the next set of TV deals, not the other way around. Well the Dodgers' TV deal has turned out to be a big fiasco with all the people that can't even watch them in LA.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 10:42 AM) I agree. We can definitely create a package that doesn't include Q. It'll be interesting what the Reds do because they literally have 0 pitching and 0 bullpen outside of Chapman. Their offense is still solid but aging. You mean the offense that finished 26th in the MLB in runs scored?

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 09:58 AM) David Price Not so sure that is the right move for them. They're not exactly hurting for SP right now, and Price will be super expensive. They sign him and they probably lose Arrieta in a couple years, then in 2018/2019 they'll be paying two pitchers well past the age of 30 ~$60 million/year at a time when all their hitters will want to get paid. I could see them going after a slightly lesser SP who will give them a bit more flexibility in later years. I've heard a few Cub fans and baseball writers say the same thing. Of course, if their new TV deal allows them to go crazy with the payroll then why not.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 10:25 PM) I disagree. No, they wouldn't take an everyday player like LaRoche over Sale since LaRoche is that bad and Sale is that great that even if he pitched one pitch every 5 days, he'd still be more valuable. But if you're comparing Arrenado and Sale, I think you'll see all of them take Nolan. I wonder what it would take to get Manny Machado. 2015 WAR: Sale: 6.2 Arenado: 4.4 You're wrong.
-
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 09:22 PM) Eh, I'll take an everyday player who is 24, plays a good 3B and rakes over a 26 year old stud pitcher who plays only once every 5 days. Any moneyballer would too. I would say it is homerism. Now, I wouldn't deal Sale for anything short of an Arrenado level player. No, any moneyballer wouldn't, that's a ridiculous claim. There's a reason Sale is ranked #5 in Fangraphs' Trade Value column. Just because SP only pitch every 5 days doesn't mean they aren't as valuable as everyday position players. In fact, the top SP face more batters over the course of the season than the top hitters get PA.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 07:59 PM) I hope there's reports of the Sox going after both so that you can see, his value isn't as high as you or many people here like to think he is. To expand a bit as well, on talk radio here in LA, someone even brought up trading Puig for Quintana and they said not without another prospect or young hitting MLBer. When prospects were brought up, everyone said no to Seager or Urias for Quintana (they also talked about 4 other players as well). This was before the Dodgers got Latos and Wood. You honestly think we'd need to send prospects along with Quintana to acquire Frazier? You're vastly underrating him. He's young, left-handed, with a very cheap contract for many years, and he's solidified himself as a top 15 SP in baseball (at worst) and has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the game for more than 3 seasons now. You really think that couldn't get Todd Frazier? Also, I would take what people say on talk radio with a huge grain of salt. The common fan might not know how good Q is (IMO he's easily the most underrated player in the game), but I guarantee you GMs know how good he is. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/appreciating-jose-quintana/

QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 07:32 PM) B/c this team drastically needs to improve it's defense and he's a top 5 defensive talent in the league. Couple that with his solid bat, and you get a big difference maker for this organization. Also, hitting similar to Eaton is a compliment, not an insult.

White Sox have worked out Eddy Julio Martinez twice or more

QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 12:39 PM) Apparently the Sox don't really wanna be players in Int'l free agency either @JesseSanchezMLB: Source: Giants and Eddie Julio Martinez, ranked #4 on @MLB int'l prospect list, have agreed to a $2.5 million deal. http://t.co/7cqNWTtPTy 29 other teams also declined to sign him for that bargain price, so to me that's a red flag. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 06:14 PM) All I'm saying back is...please for God's sake let's not pencil in Trayce and then say "now we're a competitive roster because he's guaranteed to repeat what he did this year after his callup". Play him and see what happens? Sure. Invest a huge amount in 3b and then act totally surprised that Trayce hits sub-.200 next year? Totally a White Sox move. I never said I was penciling him in for anything. I don't see many other people doing it either, they just think Trayce has earned a shot to see if he can stick over Garcia, and I agree. Maybe he'll suck, but let's find out, there's not many better options on the table right now.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 06:09 PM) his walk rate in the big leagues this year was twice his walk rate at Charlotte. I'm not saying he will be a 2 WAR player, but right now it seems like he has a better shot than Avi does.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 06:02 PM) .250 to .260? I don't think he'll be that good. 15 home runs is possible though. Batting Average is overrated anyway, if he gets a bunch of extra-base hits and manages a decent walk rate I don't care if he hits .230.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 05:55 PM) Yes, he has. I think his hitting is a fluke, but his defense is worthy of him being the 2016 center fielder He hit .230/.302/.402 the last month of the season, and he only had a .270 BABIP. With his defense he was still worth 0.4 WAR for the month though. He does that over a full season that's a 2.5 WAR player. Even if his offense falls off a bit from his September numbers his defense is good enough that he has a shot to be a 2 WAR player. We could use a lot more of those. I don't think that slash line is that far out of reach for him, especially seeing how he drives the ball. EDIT: 0.4 WAR, not 0.5.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 05:15 PM) I'm surprised that his fWAR is as high as it is among Sox pitchers. And yes, I only watched him from 06-now, but I know exactly how important he was to the 05 team. Pre-05, his numbers don't look like a #1 pitcher. Even with his 3.29 ERA in 2001, his FIP was 4.10. Buehrle is well known as a guy who breaks FIP, he was able to consistently outpitch his peripherals due to his fielding and elite ability to hold runners on base. There was an article on Grantland about it last year. Even if you don't take that into account, he's still one of the best pitchers the White Sox have ever had. http://grantland.com/features/mark-buehrle...rising-success/

QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 05:40 PM) Because they had a rainout with the Tigers a couple of weeks ago and they were only going to play tomorrow if they had to. Tigers and Indians end at 161. Kind of similar to us vs. Detroit back in 2008, except we actually made up the game.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 05:40 PM) Who says no? A. Garcia, Fulmer, M. Johnson, Montas, Beck, and Montas for Arenado and Jairo Diaz Garcia almost feels like he has negative value at this point, and including him in the deal makes things worse. Think the Rockies still say no though.
-
Pirates have seen Arrieta a bunch lately, hopefully they can figure him out this time.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 05:28 PM) Damn, I didn't even realize had the Pirates lost today that the game would be in Chicago. Anyway, should be a really good game. Arrieta makes the Cubs the slight favorite, imo. Don't think anyone is going to disagree there. QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 05:33 PM) Cardinals didn't score a run in Atlanta this weekend, and now don't play until Friday. I know they're the one seed, but if I had to rank the NL playoff teams, they'd be at the bottom for me right now. They have the worst offense, and though their rotation is deep, their top guys don't match up with the other teams' top guys. Then again, they always seem to have a scrub or two that lights it up in the playoffs.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 08:08 AM) For the love of God, please tell me we haven't been eliminated from protected pick status!? If we lose today and Seattle wins we can still get the 10th pick. -
Please no.
-
EJ gives up way too many homers, that needs to stop.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2015 -> 06:19 PM) Another point I forgot - the ballpark effect also plays in. The Rockies have the worst ERA in the league and their xFIP is 0.73 better than their ERA. The White Sox's xFIP is 0.18 better than their ERA, which is their defense playing a role probably. Other teams with a bad defense over the year, like the A's, don't have large differences - their ERA almost matches their xFIP, so other things not in either formula like defensive positioning are playing a role as well. Also, our ERA-FIP gap used to be much larger. The difference is now only 0.16, less than the Phillies, Rockies, Tigers, Nationals, and Padres. We're far from having the biggest gap, it's largely closed over the past couple of months.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2015 -> 06:12 PM) FIP is supposed to express what a pitcher can control based on their strikeout and home run rates. In other words, it's supposed to be "what the ERA might look like with an average defense". However, it isn't perfect; if a pitcher falls apart when he's pitching from the stretch or a pitcher gives up lots of hits to areas where the defense isn't ready for, it will give him more credit than he actually deserves (the white sox this year have a huge difference between their ERA and FIP, the biggest in the league, suggesting something really systematic). If you have the worst defense in the league, you should have the biggest ERA-FIP gap, that makes perfect sense considering FIP completely ignores defense.
