QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 31, 2017 -> 07:18 PM) More stuff from Giolito about his mechanics and spin rate in this article. http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article/214...with-white-sox/ Another article that touches on this stuff from Fangraphs today. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/lucas-gioli...art-and-simple/ -
White Sox will be ranked #1 #2 or #3 at mlbpipeline.com

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 01:28 PM) While our system is dramatically improved from last March, I wouldn't put us top 3 right now due to a lack of depth Our system has nice talent in the top 10, but gets significantly less interesting beyond that Landing a player like Robert, drafting well this season and a few trades (Quintana/Robertson) could really boost the system further IMO depth is a bit overrated, I'd much rather have a top-heavy system than a deep one that is lacking at the top. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) Regardless of what we gave up, our FO targeted Lawrie as an upgrade. If you weren't a fan of the upgrade it's still fair to criticize. At 1 WAR technically he was a ~2 WAR upgrade, considering we were at -1.1 WAR out of our 2B in 2015, which was dead last in the MLB.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 12:39 PM) Another fun reminder for Hahn having an insanely bad offseason last year. To be fair Erwin and Wendelken have completely stunk up the joint since being traded.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) I'm going to go to bat for this change. The reality while a lot of IBBs happen ahead of pitchers, they also happen a lot in interesting innings where there are potential scoring runs. When people are on edge of their seat, they then have to sit there and watch 4 practice pitches for a formality to get to the action. It's boring. It may not shave down time, but I think Manfreds larger goal is to reduce the "downtime" in the game. I've watched Sox games for 30 years, never seen a hit on an IBB attempt. That we all can easily name a few shows how rare they were. But every time I had to sit through an IBB was like waiting for a page to load. Glad it's gone. I agree, sure once every 1,000 intentional walks something interesting happens, but otherwise it's just boring. I'm willing to bet a year from now most people will wonder why this change wasn't made sooner.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/your-stance...rican-league-2/ What is probably more interesting is that people could vote on whether they disagreed with the projections, and over 50% of voters thought the White Sox projection was almost exactly right, with another 27% thinking it was too generous. EDIT: Title got cut off, it's supposed to say the projected record is 69-93.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week

QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 04:28 PM) MLB Network's Top 100 Players Right Now starts tonight. Quintana has never been on this list before. I think he'll be in the first show tonight (81-100). (Q was 77) It obviously means nothing, but /r/baseball on Reddit had a fan representative from each team vote on their top 100 players for 2017 and Quintana came in at #32 on the list. https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/...0_players_5026/ -
He's also a good framer, whereas Wieters is a horrible one. I'd be in favor of the move.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Feb 10, 2017 -> 06:27 PM) I didn't say their rebuild is not legit. But it is very strange that they were able to trade their 2 "clubhouse problems" pretty quickly but were not able to move any of the other 23 players on their roster. I think a lot of fans( just look at this thread) expected more trades before spring training . But it looks like the FO may have a much longer timeline for the rebuild than the fans in order to try and keep the product on the field somewhat competitive. That is also a legit rebuild approach. Except the product currently on the field is not somewhat competitive, the Sox are a bottom 5 team right now. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 10, 2017 -> 08:35 AM) The number seems high to me but I started reading Passan's book, and he claims 52% of pitchers wind up on the DL every year. http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/2015-star...dl-projections/ This Rotographs article says that ~40% of starting pitchers make at least 1 DL trip every season, that seems about right. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 9, 2017 -> 03:24 PM) I would just like to say that I would like us signing Park. His contract isn't a big deal, and he hits the ball hard when he hits it. I agree, $10 million over 3 years is peanuts and if he can improve a bit on his contact issues he could be well worth the risk. That power is real.

Robertson to WASH was close, now at stalemate

QUOTE (Soha @ Feb 9, 2017 -> 12:39 PM) I see 3 or 4 teams that could very well only have 50 something wins. I just don't see the Sox as that depleted. They have a below average offense, and assuming Quintana stays, they may hold their own as as average, or slightly below average staff. Infield defense should be solid, outfield defense not so much. That isn't the makings of a team that will lose 105 games IMO. Which teams are going to have 50 something wins? The only team to lose 100 last year was Minnesota, and they greatly underperformed their run differential and Base Runs record, I doubt they come close to 103 losses again. The Rays had 68 wins but I see them doing much better this year, as they also greatly underperformed both their run differential and Base Runs. After that the worst record in the NL still had 68 wins. Of that bottom group the Padres definitely got worse but the Phillies, Braves and Reds should be improved. Oakland is the only other team in the AL that I think could challenge us for the bottom spot though I think their rotation has the potential to be pretty good, so I'd put them above us too. They don't need to lose 105 games to be one of the 5 worst teams in baseball, 95 losses last year would have been enough for the 2nd pick in the draft. -

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-biggest...till-out-there/ I think Cameron's idea of picking up de la Rosa for super cheap and trying him out as a middle reliever is intriguing. If he's any good he could definitely be an interesting deadline trade piece, especially since he's left-handed. Thoughts? -
I'll go with 70-92

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 9, 2017 -> 09:57 AM) Belichick doesn't win that Super Bowl with Jimmy Garoppolo though. I'm not denying that, and I'm not saying Brady isn't great. I'm just saying that while I think he would have been a HOF QB elsewhere, I'm not convinced he would be in the GOAT conversation with another coach besides Belichick. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 8, 2017 -> 02:46 PM) Yeah...he figured that the best QB of all time can make a good coach look like a genius. I'm fairly certain if you gave Aaron Rodgers to Lovie, he'd look like a genius too, same with a lot of other coaches. Not knocking Bill, but I tend to believe he gets more credit then he deserves. The Pats have made their fare share of bad moves, including the Chandler Jones trade. They also let Wes Welker walk to sign Amedola and in hindsight I think that was a poor move. I tend to think that Belichick makes Brady look better more than the other way around. The Patriots went 11-5 without Brady in 2008 and went 3-1 in the games he didn't play in this year. There's no one better at turning castoffs and nobodies into good players. Would Brady have been the GOAT with another coach? I don't think so. -
2016-2017 NBA Thread

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 8, 2017 -> 11:57 AM) The path doesn't mean anything until the proper development occurs. If the goal is to suck to be better, the Pirates and Royals took 30 years. The Jags have been in the top 10 of the NFL draft for how long? What about the Browns? Jimmy Butler could retire in 10 years with the Bulls hovering around the .500 mark each of those seasons, and they still might be closer. One guy in the NBA can make all the difference. In the next 20 years, the Bulls may have a shot or two at one of them. In the NBA if you aren't one of the top 3-4 teams you basically have no shot at all of winning it all. In the MLB and NFL all you really need to do is be a playoff contender and then get hot at the right time. It's much easier to become a playoff contender than it is to become a top 3 team in the NBA. Especially the MLB, where due to general variance a true talent 78-81 win team can sneak into the playoffs if a couple things go right, and at that point it's basically a crapshoot. Just look at how many different teams have won a title. Only 11 different teams in the NBA have won a title since 1980. In the MLB 11 different teams have a won a title since 2001. And with the second wildcard it's never been easier to make the playoffs, which is all you really need to do to have a shot to win a title. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 12:46 PM) Considering the hard caps on international spending, the way the draft works, and given the White Sox current payroll, Robertson's paycheck isn't going to cause any strain on JR's wallet or cause the team to spend less on prospects. There is absolutely no reason for a salary dump unless you just think he is going to be awful. Either get something interesting back now or wait. No pressure at all on RH to rid himself of Robertson. Agreed, a pure salary dump doesn't make sense because there's really nowhere else that money can go at the moment. -

Rangers have increased pursuit of Q?

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 02:36 PM) Lol, yes, very generous indeed. The Garcia thing is the biggst head-scratcher, but: 1. Geovany Soto is not ">>" than any catcher in the MLB, lol. I like him but come on. 2. OP is either drastically underrating Kiermaier (who put up 3-5 WAR each of the last three seasons) or is very VERY high on Charlie Tilson. EDIT: just saw the admission on Garcia. But still, Kiermaier. I think it's because he was only comparing the bats without defense included. If we included defense the Rays' position players easily outclass ours. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) I actually think the Rays and A's will be better than the Sox this year if they trade Q. I think they're better right now. -
If his short stint at the MLB level ruined him then Fulmer was never going to make it anyway. He's a not in the top 100 anymore but he's still likely a top 150 prospect, his stock is definitely down but he's not a lost cause yet.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
OmarComing25 replied to Y2Jimmy0's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 02:37 PM) How are they going to be terrible if Robertson, Frazier and Abreu all rebound? Seriously that's like 4 wins if those guys "raise their value by the deadline", if Tilson can do anything positive in CF that probably makes up for losing Eaton by itself. Yea they'll get worse losing Sale no doubt but they wont completely fall to being one of the worst three teams in baseball. For them to win fewer than 70 games not only will Frazier, Abreu and Robertson not rebound, it'll probably means they got worse. Or worse yet Rodon and Anderson fall apart. Or nightmare scenario Q gets hurt. That's just as a team managing to """achieve""" a win total. If you want to talk about the offense falling into the woeful Philles/Brewers/Padres nightmare tier, especially with the great Minnesota Twins rotation serving up meat for 19 games, we are talking a cataclysm on offense. Like an absolute bloodbath where nobody is hitting anything. If that happens then you can bet there wont be much value getting improved for the deadline. Nobody seems willing to rectify this at all. Everyone just seems convinced that all the players they want traded will have MAGICAL years of resurgence and value raising, and that Rodon will have a massive season and that all their losses will become of the GRR VILLIANS like Avi and Tilson. Its all fantasy, its trying to convince yourself that what you want to happen for the Sox will happen. It's really hard to take you seriously when you continue to say things like this. C'mon man. And you're way overestimating the amount that Frazier/Robertson/Abreu need to rebound to improve their value. You're the only one saying they need to have "magical" years to raise their value, when in reality they only need mild improvements. Even if all of them rebound the way we hope, it won't add more than a couple of wins, because we'll also be trading them at the deadline in this scenario and then replacing them with garbage for the rest of the season. -

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 02:06 PM) That is exactly what people are saying when they think the loss of Adam Eaton will cause them to tumble in RS standings in 2017. Not really. People are saying that the gap in offensive ability between Eaton and Tilson is significant. You seem to think Tilson will be a league-average hitter, but it's likely that he'll be much worse.
