5/17 - Astros @ White Sox Game Thread
OmarComing25 replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in 2016 Season in Review
Sucks that Rodon is matching up against a LHP, which means Navarro in the lineup. I believe Rodon has lost more strikes to bad calls by umpires/poor framing by the catchers than any other pitcher in baseball (by a lot), and I think Navarro is pretty complicit in that. Part of that is because he's hard to receive for, but Avila is better at it. https://twitter.com/msimonespn/status/73117...src=twsrc%5Etfw -

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ May 17, 2016 -> 01:20 PM) Sox have a chance to get back on track here. Yes, they are 10 over but they are 5-5 in their last 10 & 7-6 in the month of May so far. This home stand is huge for them. If they can take 2 games in each, that'll leave them at 6-4 in that stretch & 30-18 overall. Really need to start seeing strong starts from pitchers not-named Chris Sale & Jose Quintana. Starts tonight with Rodon. If the Sox can go 7-6 in every 13 game stretch from this point forward, they'll make the playoffs. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ May 17, 2016 -> 10:11 AM) 2)Prospects have value. Trading a top 10 prospect (which Reed was) and a starting catcher for a 2 month rental of an above average pitcher is bad business. Sox could have gotten much more for him. The examples of over-pay abound. You have to consider their value AT the time of trade. If you're going to look at the trade through this lens, then you can't complain about the Vazquez, Peavy, Thome or Frazier trades (not that you should really should complain about them anyway).
-
Who cares if the Royals change their rotation plans anyway, none of their starters are any good. Their best pitcher (Volquez) is slightly better than mediocre.

QUOTE (Deadpool @ May 17, 2016 -> 09:38 AM) History tells us no, you don't. To move a player like that requires a high degree of desperation. What history? The Cabrera trade isn't even close to the same scenario. Trout is way better than Cabrera, and has more years of control than Miguel did when he was traded. Cabrera wasn't even close to the "best player in baseball" at the time he was traded either. Pujols, A-Rod, Sizemore, Utley, Wright and Mauer were all better players at the time of the trade.

QUOTE (Deadpool @ May 17, 2016 -> 09:04 AM) No, it still doesn't. It would probably take most of the Cubs' 5 top 100 prospects, but not Bryant. The Halos don't really hold any cards on this. If they don't trade Trout, they're still completely hosed. When you have the best player in baseball, you hold plenty of cards. Angels aren't trading Trout, but if they did at least a couple major league players are coming back. Prospects alone aren't getting it done.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ May 16, 2016 -> 12:09 PM) Agree but that was solely based on his production in August. He hit .354 in August but then tailed off to .216 in Sept/Oct. based on his tailing off I was hoping the Red Sox would be willing to part w him since Betts had a great year. Oh well, too late now Are you really regretting not trading Quintana though? Our rotation would be a complete mess without him.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ May 16, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) As someone said the Sox need another batter and a starting pitcher. We need guys who have good contact rates and bat control because I don't really see that on this roster. Eaton, Melky, Navarro and Rollins all have well above-average contact rates (especially Melky and Eaton, near the top of the league). Jackson is above average, Abreu is right at league average and Frazier just a tad under. Really the only guys with poor contact rates on the roster are Avila, Avi, Lawrie and Sands.
-
I echo the matchups sentiment. Avila may have lost some bat speed but he still has great patience, and I think his bat is fine for the catcher position. They're both not great framers but Navarro has really stunk up the joint in that regard so far. All those close pitches lost and consistently smaller zones for our pitchers can't just be a coincidence.

As much as last week sucked, better to have leads to blow than to not have leads at all, right? Sure it's more frustrating, but I'd rather go 2-4 with a chance at going 6-0 than to go 2-4 and not be in a position to win any of the 4 losses. First week all year they've lost over 2 games, right the ship at home and it's all good. Plus, no ground lost in the division, I'll take it.

QUOTE (chw42 @ May 13, 2016 -> 07:13 PM) It's pretty clear the Sox offense was on a cold spell early in the year. Now they're hot. Hopefully it stays that way. It helps that we've faced some bad pitchers recently. In the last 30 days only Boston has scored more runs in the AL. -

Yankees used their bullpen a lot against the Royals. Nice to see Severino already at 70 pitches. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ May 13, 2016 -> 06:52 PM) Chris is getting hit around a little bit right now. Lots of solid contact so far. I wouldn't call that last hit solid contact. But I agree. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ May 13, 2016 -> 06:46 PM) You want good contact out of the 2 spot, Sox don't exactly have a ton of those guys. I'd say Lawrie or AJax can both work better. Lawrie Ks a bit too much for my liking in that spot, but he's been hitting pretty damn well so far. I'm much more confident in his ability to hit a fastball right down the pipe than Rollins. Melky rarely strikes out. He has more walks than strikeouts. -

Severino getting no calls on the corners. Also, it seems like his problem is his stuff has too much movement. -

QUOTE (Scoots @ May 13, 2016 -> 06:42 PM) White sox have bases loaded every game it seems like Second most ABs with the bases loaded this year, only trailing the Cubs. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ May 13, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) Eaton misread it. But since he's a +13 defender so far this year, he makes up for it somehow. Up to +15 before the game today.
