  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 06:58 PM) Nightengale seems to think LaRoche won't end up retiring. That would truly suck http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/colum...liams/81885844/ That's not how I read it. He's saying he shouldn't retire over this, not that he won't.
  2. Not saying I'm in favor of getting him, but I think he got pretty unlucky last year. His batted ball profile was good, and he hit the ball very hard, so he's a good bet to bounce back. He was also hitting the ball very well until he got hurt. However, I do not want him through 2019. No thanks.
  3. QUOTE (Condor13 @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 03:29 PM) The Sox dont look bad in this situation to me. KW on the other hand looks like a complete ***. KW has to go and for me this just throws more fuel onto that fire. To say your not changing a policy but he can't have his kid there more then 50% of the time is completely chaging the policy. I can't stand KW but he did absolutely nothing wrong here.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 03:00 PM) Then the entire team should be annoyed with each other. Many teams let their kids in the clubhouse, many have a policy against it. Either is OK. Just don't have one that allows it, and then ask the player who this means so much, to not take advantage. As the earlier post stated, does he have this conversation if LaRoche had a big year last year, and was healthy this spring? I don't think he does. If the truth is he would, then I apologize to KW. They just asked him to dial it back and not have his kid there every single day. That's not unreasonable.
  5. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 02:52 PM) This is a really stupid question, but does LaRoche's kid go to any type of schooling? I understand wanting to be in a Major League clubhouse with your dad, but the kid was getting really annoying. He is home schooled.
  6. QUOTE (shysocks @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 02:12 PM) JFC. How anybody will blame the Sox for this, I don't know, but they will. Look at the replies to the Rosenthal tweet, the majority are siding with LaRoche and calling the Sox "cold-blooded". Unbelievable.
  7. @JustDontKnowBro "Let me bring my kid to work with me in an adult environment or I'm going to give you $13M" is one hell of an ultimatum. Great tweet.
  8. QUOTE (Dunt @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 01:33 PM) So he retired b/c they wouldn't let his kid in the clubhouse. Lol. Wow. What a bunch of monsters.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 01:07 PM) Why do something to force him to retire, and then allow the team to try to talk him out of it? Just doesn't add up. Yeah that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
  10. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Mar 16, 2016 -> 06:55 AM) I don't like the idea of Jackson playing every day. His bat is just so bad.. It's better than Avi's bat though. He'll probably be at around a .700 OPS, which I don't think qualifies as "so bad".
  11. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 03:23 PM) Beggars can't be choosers but what issues from the past are you referring to ? Probably referring to this comment: But he said that 10 years ago, so meh. I doubt it'd be an issue.
  12. "Like with Cuddyer’s retirement, it almost certainly comes with a buyout, so he’s actually not walking away from that much money. In other words, LaRoche probably chose something like $5-10 million to be home with his kids over $12 million to sit on the bench." From the comments section on a Fangraphs article, so the Sox may not be getting back as much money as expected from this decision.
  13. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 02:15 PM) Is there any package of players that doesn't involve Anderson or Fulmer or anyone on the current projected 25 that could get Carlos Gonzalez? I'm thinking no. Maybe a package centered around Adams? I don't know.
  14. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 01:58 PM) Wow, crazy news. We'll gladly take the $13M in savings. I'd rather have a #4 starter than Bruce. There's none available right now though.
  15. Rabbit mentioned going after Coghlan on Twitter. .271/.345/.449 over past 3 seasons against RHP. Should be relatively cheap to acquire.
  16. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 01:52 PM) Yep, I think he would be a good fit for this team and I would rather not have to give up any of our top 10 prospects I'd be shocked if it took one of our top 10 prospects to get Bruce. It should be a nothing prospect.
  17. QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 01:42 PM) Fair enough but I'm not sure if Appel would be that high of a price at this point, he was traded for a developing closer this offseason and not even one-for-one but part of a seven-player package. At this point I think Appel is nearing reclamation status like Gavin Floyd when he was with the Phillies. Giles is a lot better than you're giving him credit for.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 01:36 PM) Well, from a baseball perspective, Avi Garcia/Melky Cabrera just penciled in as your everyday DH. Austin Jackson signing just became very important as he's now penciled in as a starter. Jackson was going to start regardless.
  19. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 12:51 PM) Garcia's 2015 batting average by month: April: .309 May: .333 June: .181 July: .253 August: .278 September: .208 He hit well the first two months due to having an unsustainably high .400+ BABIP. His power numbers were the same as they were the rest of the year. It was easy to predict the ensuing dropoff.
  20. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Mar 15, 2016 -> 09:20 AM) They don't know what they are committing to, anyway. I just don't think Arrieta is going to be second half 2015 ever again. If he were that good and you have the Cubs budget, you sign the Ace pitcher and deal with the bad years. The Cubs are at least skeptical he can repeat his success in 2016. Well of course he's not going to repeat the lowest ERA in any half of baseball in history, that's a pretty safe assumption. He doesn't have to repeat 2015, a 2.25-2.50 ERA would still put him among the very top starters in baseball. I don't think it's skepticism, if Arrieta was willing to do a 4-year extension I think the Cubs would be all over that. 7 years is just too much.
  21. I had always heard that stretching before physical activity is more harmful than beneficial, but that stretching afterwards is important. This is interesting.
  22. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Mar 14, 2016 -> 02:56 PM) I could care less about stats in spring for pitchers. Just get your work in and get ready. I think Q had an era over 15 in 2014 ST. Doesn't matter. Kershaw had an ERA over 9 in spring training in 2014.
  23. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Mar 14, 2016 -> 02:40 PM) For sure. The Cubs front office clearly doesn't believe in him and it could definitely cost them. Not sure how refusing to give a pitcher a 7-year extension that will carry him through his age 38 season means the front office doesn't believe in him. It's generally not a good idea to give any pitcher a long-term deal in his mid-30s, especially one where you are paying him $30-35 million a year. Even if Arrieta puts up the same exact season as 2015 this year, he still wouldn't be worth that deal. Pitchers are just too risky.
  24. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Mar 14, 2016 -> 11:33 AM) Lawrie is going to have to play 3B whenever Frazier needs a day off, so the backup 2B will have to effectively spell two players. And if LaRoche ever goes on the DL, Frazier is the only one with ample playing time at 1B, so that would mean Lawrie plays 3B on those days as well. Saladino played a stellar 3B last year, Lawrie isn't the only backup 3B.
