QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 7, 2016 -> 07:20 AM) Latest for Laroche was the first half of 2014. And he did nothing last year. No wants to give Avi 600 at bats, but he also isn't past his prime. Laroche on the bench with Avi/Melky leaves us without a late inning defensive outfielder. It's essentially 2 DHs. Now without Laroche one of these guys is going to have to learn to play some first. And of course they're going to have to do some intelligent platooning to maximize this roster The second half of 2014 LaRoche put up a .789 OPS, so your first sentence is just plain not true.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Mar 6, 2016 -> 10:14 PM) Could Austin Jackson start for any other team in our division? Could start for Detroit, Cleveland and KC with Dyson out. Probably Minnesota too.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 6, 2016 -> 10:00 PM) Jackson becomes the 4tg outfielder unless we have another move in the works. I think Garcia stays no matter what No chance Jackson was signed to be the 4th OF.
-
We could not unreasonably expect a ~.750 OPS from a LaRoche/Avi or LaRoche/Sands platoon at DH, and that would be fine.
-
Solves the CF problem, and the DH vs. LHP problem, and the cost is extremely reasonable. Great move.

Saw a tweet that Nightengale was on ESPN 1000 and thinks the Sox "have another move up their sleeve" in regards to the OF, but doubts it will be CarGo or Bruce.

Spring Training 3/4: Indians vs White Sox 2:05 start

I find myself hoping our pitchers don't get any strikeouts this spring so our fielders get as many reps as possible. -
RYAN RABURN IS OUT OF THE AL!!!!!!!!&#

This made my day. -
Obviously I'd still like another OF, but I do think Sands should be above Avi on the depth chart if we don't get one, he's a much better bet to be a positive WAR player than Avi is.

I've been following Fangraphs writer Tony Blengino's Ball-In-Play series with interest because I love looking at this kind of stuff, and he did LF yesterday. Melky's batted ball profile from 2015 looks pretty good, he hit the ball pretty hard, especially on flyballs and line drives, had the third highest line drive rate among all LF to go along with very low K and pop up rates. The writer thinks he experienced a lot of bad luck last year and is due for a bounceback. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-positi...trospective-lf/

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 06:33 PM) I don't know. Maybe Frazier if we threw in another prospect. (and yes, we would have had to bring in another team). Or maybe a better LF or RF. Thompson was no hole in CF. Try again. You would have rather traded Eaton than Thompson? Is that a joke? If Thompson is such a sure thing, then why don't the Dodgers play him or trade him for a piece they could use? I'll never understand why you hate Eaton so much yet love Avi so much. It makes no sense.
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 06:19 PM) They likely traded for him to play 3rd; then they work out a deal for Frazier. Sox FO reacts with no real plan; they just aren't creative. I wanted to trade Eaton (to shore up 3rd or some other position) because I think we saw a career offensive year and his defense isn't good and the rest of our OF defense is bad. And we had a more than capable CF on the roster. Eaton + prospect could have brought in a good 3B or whatever. Oh yeah? Which 3B? And now you have opened up a hole at CF. sounds like a real "creative" move. Also you say it's a career year on offense yet Eaton's wRC+ in 2015 (118) was almost exactly the same as his 2014 season (117).
-
I couldn't possibly care any less about this. What a stupid "controversy".
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 08:31 AM) Eaton even said he might DH some at start of the season. Hahn really needs someone that can play CF Austin Jackson makes even more sense at this point. Get it done already.

Ian Desmond Signs 1 Year 8M Deal with Rangers
OmarComing25 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Once Rollins was signed there was no way the Sox were going after Desmond, but damn that's great value. -
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) Law of Averages isn't a real thing. It's a layman theory not based on reality. You're assuming every year the odds of a team winning the World Series are the same for every team and even then, that's not the law of averages. The law of averages is a fallacy like the gambler's wager where awful statistics are used to justify outcomes. Even if baseball were a 30 side coin, that does not mean the Cubs would win three in 100 years. Each side of the coin being equally represented is the single highest likely result, but is still unlikely. I don't buy into the whole "The Cubs have failed a lot in the past so that means they will fail this year" but baseball has so much variance that even the favorite has at most a 20-25% chance of winning it all, and that's being generous. So many people are ready to hand them the title in 2016 already but the odds are still highly against any single team winning it. This isn't the NBA.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 10:36 AM) If the White Sox added Jackson they could look like this theoretically: VS RHP 1. Eaton RF 2. Cabrera LF 3. Abreu 1B 4. Frazier 3B 5. LaRoche DH 6. Lawrie 2B 7. Avila C 8. Rollins SS 9. Jackson CF vs LHP 1. Eaton RF 2. Rollins SS 3. Abreu 1B 4. Frazier 3B 5. Cabrera LF 6. Lawrie 2B 7. Garcia DH 8. Navarro 9. Jackson CF This is why bringing in another OF is so important, it not only addresses the hole in the OF, but it also addresses the DH platoon for LaRoche with Avi.

Sox Project Among Worst in Wins LOST to Garbage Players

I cringe to think about what that number was last year. -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:32 AM) Now I see the confusion and its my fault. The blurb I was reading said Fowler had signed a 1/8M for '16. Apologies to all for my confusion. No worries man, it was an easy mistake to make.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:25 AM) I agree and that's what Ive been saying. If the Baltimore rumors are true, Fowler took 3M less to play for the cubs. 13M is more than 11M, so that isn't true.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:23 AM) I agree and pretty much said the same thing in a previous post. Fowler is betting on himself this year to lineup a payday next year all the while getting another chance at the post season. Imo, Fowler taking a mere 8M this year speaks volumes, he easily could have gotten much more elsewhere and yet he still chose the cubs. It's not 8M though, it's 13M.

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:18 AM) Cubs signed Victorino! Watch them sign Jackson too just for the hell of it.

The battle for shortstop - applying some odds
OmarComing25 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Honestly the only way I see Anderson as the starting SS is if Rollins and Saladino both break their legs in Spring Training. Even if Anderson lights it up in March, I'm not going to take much out of 50 PA when guys are just trying to get ready for the season. -
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 06:41 PM) you failed to see the point that it is all about the $$$ Robertson, Melky, Rollins, and Latos are all recent examples of players taking less money to come here.
