QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 22, 2016 -> 11:24 PM) They just gave him the largest single season outfield contract ever. It's not like Mets got a hometown discount. And Cespedes never wanted to leave NY to begin with. Once the Mets got back in it was just a matter of time. It wasnt about getting outbid

Starting pitching options post Cespedes

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 22, 2016 -> 12:03 PM) Replace him with whom and at what cost after presumably eating much of Danks' contract? Danks as a 4th or 5th starter is perfectly fine. He was 60th among all starters in fWAR. There is a lot of value as a starter in just taking the ball 30 times a year and throwing 180 innings. Coax Buehrle back! Dump Danks! -
Starting pitching options post Cespedes

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 22, 2016 -> 10:19 AM) I don't see us spending big money on a pitcher. If we do anything it will be a bargain signing, probably on a minor league deal. I think there's an argument to be made over spending middle to big $$ on a starting pitcher rather than a decent OF. Would another mediocre OF have more impact on the team than a better quality RH starter? I don't necessarily disagree with your post, just putting alternative options out there... -
QUOTE (Baron @ Jan 22, 2016 -> 10:20 AM) This guy said they signed him a few weeks ago. He knows nothing...Jon Snow He does know someone in the Sox FO, but apparently he's just spitting out 2nd hand info from a low level contact.

Should the Sox take a run at Gallardo? Has had pretty good stats considering he's been pitching in hitter friendly ballparks the past few seasons. Gives the rotation a solid presence in probably the 3 slot. Other ideas, either FA's or trade? Any way to bring in James Shields on a bad contract swap (Laroche/Danks)? Just spitballing here...

The bullpen has quietly been built into a pretty solid unit. I figured Albers was as good as gone after last year, good to see him back in the fold. Even if he regresses a bit, he should still be effective.

Dexter Fowler as a secondary option

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 09:12 PM) Kemp is horrible on defense DH doesn't need a glove. What's their situation at 1b? Laroche dump possibility? -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 08:23 PM) I'm thinking a bonkers deal with Tampa that includes Baez and Soler for Odorizzi and McGee. Would be shocked to see the Cubs trade both of those guys in a single deal. -

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 08:21 PM) I wonder if this comes back to what we discussed a few nights ago? Cubs trade Soler for pitching, sign Fowler for CF and Heyward plays RF where he belongs. Exactly this, I've been waiting for it to happen. f'ing Cubs -
Why has this deal not been consumated yet? Something put a kink in the deal? Agents shopping around for someone to beat it? Seems like there was huge smoke overnight into this morning/afternoon...but not much now. Regardless of whether you want Cespedes or not, either way I'd have thought there would be an announcement by now with the Nats.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) He has but would it surprise anyone if they went into the offseason with Garcia in the OF? I dont think so at all. Infact I expect it at this point. Why? There are other OF options still on the board. And Desmond as well, if they want another bat that badly

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 04:57 PM) Always good to look these things up before commenting. Alvarez, as a platoon DH wouldn't be required to field anything. His inability to do so is what has driven his price down to dirt cheap. 24 homers and a.799 OPS against righties last year. I dont need to look anything up to know the Sox arent signing Alvarez while they are still stuck with Laroche. Always good to think things thru before commenting.
-
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 04:50 PM) 147 games in 2014. 129 in 2013. And he'd be able to DH some along with Pedro Alvarez who we sign. Alvarez would be a worse pick-up than Werth. Alvarez isn't much better than LaRoche basically, in terms of value, since he can't field to save his life. We have enough of those types of guys...Avi.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 04:46 PM) you know, that is shrewd .... thinking outside the box.... i like it. I don't think Austin Jackson is going to be banking any top prospects for anyone at the deadline. He's a 4th outfielder, don't see a lot of demand for that at the deadline, at least to the degree that you're getting anything good in return.
-
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 04:45 PM) Danks and LaRoche for Werth after the Nats sign Cespedes. Sign Gallardo. Genius? If you want to see Werth play about 60 games, sure. Guy is a walking injury.

Dexter Fowler as a secondary option

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 01:45 PM) Why would the Sox be considering giving up a draft pick for an IF who has a career 99 OPS+ and had an 80 OPS+ last season? I've seen his name mentioned several times but I'd rather see what Saladino can do. Sign Fowler if he'll take a 3 year deal. Because they need another bat, obviously, and Desmond fits that bill outside of last year's crater job. Why would you give up a pick for Fowler? -
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 01:37 PM) What does Danks have to do with anything? At the time he signed that extension he was every bit as valuable as Cespedes and was worth every penny. It's not his or the Sox fault that his career got derailed by a major injury. I believe Sox knew Danks was getting surgery before they offered that deal. I've always thought it was a terrible deal, one of KW's worst.

Dexter Fowler as a secondary option
blackmooncreeping replied to blackmooncreeping's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Fowler or Desmond? Free agent-wise, who would you target now that they seem to have screwed the pooch on Cespedes? Both cost a pick (barf). Both could hit 2nd in the order. Fowler means we can move Avi out of the starting OF. Desmond means Avi is still starting in our OF. Can we work a deal for Revere? -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 01:30 PM) We're going to offer 4. 4/90 should easily compete with that. We hope so but no guarantee the Sox would offer that. Cespedes probably sees a team in better position to compete in weak NL East Division, and enjoyed raking the weak ass pitching in the NHL last year.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 01:27 PM) I don't get how anyone looks at that and thinks were out. That's lower aav than I expected. It's the years on the table that is probably making a difference. Not like the Sox are going to offer $100 for 3 years...
-
Pearce is already off the board now, SOx better have plan B ready to roll, quickly, if Nats land Yo. What would it take to pry Revere out of WASH?
-
Damn it, this is for real now. IF Nats are going 5 years $100 mil with opt-outs, and the Sox don't match... SMFH

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 01:16 PM) It was posted and then deleted Ok, heart rate can return to semi-normal now...

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 01:06 PM) I would trade Chris Sale for Bryce Harper in a second I love me some Chris Sale...but I'd trade him in half a second for Harper.
-
That's a good signing. Damn, would've liked him on the Sox as a platoon with LaRoche, Melky, Avi, etc.
