Zack Collins agrees to deal with White Sox
gosoxgo2005 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 26, 2016 -> 11:47 PM) Considering his age, but also past production (which is no guarantee of future production for 30+ players)....what contract would you offer Encarnacion that would be enticing enough for him to leave Toronto (I'm assuming they will end up keeping 1 of him or Bautista, but not losing both). I'd offer him whatever it took for him to play for the White Sox, which is probably 5 years, 150+ million. Get him signed through the 2020 season when Sale and Co's contracts are up and live with the 1-2 years of dead weight at the end of it. Now, this will never in a billion years happen, not with Reinsdorf at the helm. -
QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jun 7, 2016 -> 07:11 AM) Ozzie worked out well if you remember 2005. As far as the Ricketts/Ameritrade approach, they got lucky getting Rizzo, Bryant and trading for Arrietta , now it's all about trying to buy a world series. It would be funny if they don't win it with those guys. How did he get "lucky"? He hired the arguably the best administrator in all of sports in Theo Epstein who systematically turned their organizational structure, farm system, scouting department, and coaching staff into the best in baseball. It took a few years, but now the Big League product is by far and away the best in the game. That's not getting lucky, I don't think. That's knowing who is good at running a business. I WISH EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE that the Sox had Ricketts and Theo at the helm

QUOTE (professa @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 03:09 PM) I think we have 4 glaring needs: A power bat, a high leverage relief pitcher, a middle of the rotation SP, and a utility player to improve our bench. Here are my suggestions: Andrew Miller & Carlos Beltran in a package deal: We need that 3 headed monster coming out of that pen and with Miller we'd have Jones, Miller, and Robertson. Beltran is showing good pop after a nice May and would slide in nicely to that DH role. Plus he's a switch hitter, and we are in need of a lefty bat. Now, to get this package, we will probably have to trade Fulmer or Anderson. Or perhaps they would bite at a package consisting of Avi Garcia, Spencer Adams & Tyler Danish/Jordan Guerrero? Jimmy Nelson (Probably too expensive tho): Love the arm, would slot nicely in our rotation. Don't see the Brewers giving up that without a haul in return. Therefore... James Shields or Rich Hill will be available for a cheaper price. Hill's contract expires this year and is owed far less than Shields is, and his body of work this season has been a lot better. I am just reluctant to trust that he can put these numbers up over the course of the season and help this team during a deep playoff run. Therefore my preference is James Shields, he has more experience and I'm sure SD would be willing to pay some salary. One of Ryan Raburn, Kelly Johnson, or Chris Coghlan to solidify the bench. We saw the effect of a solid bench has with a team like the mets, who could go to guys like Uribe or Kelly Johnson off the bench to get a hit. Raburn has been lighting it up this year, while Johnson and Coghlan have struggled. All 3 provide versatility and could be solid fill ins in case of injury. Our current bench is full of AAAA players and not one of a playoff team. I'm sure you could get any 3 of those guys for a low end prospect Lineup: Eaton Abreu Beltran Frazier Melky Lawrie Jackson Avila Saladino Bench: Raburn/Coghlan/Johnson Navarro Rollins Coats/Davidson/Sanchez Rotation Sale Q Shields Rodon Latos/Gonzalez Bullpen Robertson Miller Jones Putnam Duke Jennings Albers SO those are my moves. I doubt we will make that many trades but I think that is a playoff roster. Let's trade for Bryant, Arrieta, Kershaw, Trout, Arrenado too while we're at it

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 1, 2016 -> 07:22 PM) Is Jon Jay even that good? He's left-handed, but hasn't he fallen off? He's having a solid year on a s*** team. He'd be an instant upgrade over sands. Really good defensively too. I'd take him as a glue piece all day every day.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ May 30, 2016 -> 11:04 AM) Why the condescending tone? I always buy tickets in advance to guarantee that I can sit in the seats that I prefer. Stop being a tool. You can buy $7 tickets the day of the game at the ticket window and almost always sit wherever you want in the stadium.

If this is the actual package you absolutely do it. Expensive, yes. But shields is a good pitcher. If shields is your 3-4 starter that's a good rotation. We still need to add a bat and lefty reliever though.. Also who is white sox Dave? I don't have Twitter but googled his account and he has a good following and it looks like Hayes and him talk to each other.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) The idea that it is a set number of AB's that is the same number for each player is silly. It doesn't matter that it was 1300 ABs for Anderson, he still has big holes in his game. A guy like Beckham was rushed, but he was giving the team reasons to rush him. A guy like Kris Bryant doesn't need the same number of AB's as a guy like Tim Anderson. He just doesn't have the depth and background of a guy that played only positional baseball his whole life. He didn't play baseball his first two years of HS. Anderson also had a grand total of 332 college AB's in two seasons of minor community college baseball. Gordon Beckham had 275 in his Junior year alone, after playing for 3 full years at one of the top baseball schools in the country. With Anderson it isn't like he has done something that makes him look like a can't miss SS today at the major league level either. We know he has a history of really bad starts, long slumps, lots of strikeouts, and not many walks. He still has some big exploitable holes in his game as we speak today. This is the kind of response I was looking for, and I agree with it 100%

Also, Jim Callis just said quote, "The White Sox are realistic contenders in the AL Central, and they should enhance their chances by making Tim Anderson their starting shortstop today." Take that FWIW (nothing)
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ May 26, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) Self explanatory. Rushing prospects can be a detriment to their development or even their overall future as an MLB player. When would he be considered not rushed then? He has 1300 MiLB at bats. 1400? 1500? Beckham had about 230 MiLB at bats. THAT is rushing a prospect. Again, I'm not advocating for him to be called up at this very moment. If he's hitting .330 in 2 weeks and the Sox are still getting s*** production from half the lineup, then I probably will be. All that said, it's fun have a prospect so hot that we're having this debate even
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ May 26, 2016 -> 01:37 PM) I t could also ruin him as a prospect if he isn't ready. He should have more than a couple weeks of success at AAA before they bring him up. Please elaborate.

White Sox trying to trade for Carlos Beltran or Brett Gardner

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 12:46 PM) Nothing in Anderson's history tells me that he will be better than Rollins if he were called up right now. In fact everything in his history shows the opposite. The theorhetical chance you refer to isn't equal. The chance he will struggle upon call up are MUCH higher than not. I understand it isn't equal. I'm more or less playing devil's advocate here as well; though I have a gut feeling Anderson will be called up sooner than later, I still think Sally is the best option at SS for the time being. They still need a 2-hitter, but Saladino in the 9 hole with his + defense and base running is not a bad option right now. My ideal lineup with current roster construction: Eaton RF Abreu 1b Cabrera LF Frazier 3b Lawrie 2b Garcia (puke) DH Catcher (puke) Jackson CF Saladino SS

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 12:21 PM) So it doesn't hurt the team and him now. Why would you want to replace a guy who sucks, with a guy who will probably suck more? That's exactly my point. We all know Rollins sucks. Anderson, should he be called up (purely hypothetical at this point, obviously) might not suck. There's a chance he does, but also a CHANCE he doesn't. Accepting the status quo (Rollins) is not going to help this team. Anderson at least could.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 10:16 AM) Every time this question is asked, the answer is still September. Anderson has a history of struggling for a significant period of time to adjust to each level he jumps to. Leave him at AAA until rosters expand unless a short term injury at SS would give him a short stint as a nonpressure preview for him, instead of just handing him the job in a pennant race. Why is that the answer? Circumstances have changed. If the team weren't competitive, then stow him in Charlotte until 2017 for service time reasons. They are, however, but with no thanks to J-Roll. We know what Rollins is at this point; an over the hill short stop with limited range who has struggled mightily at the plate as well. Anderson might not prove to be any better should he be called up, but at least there's an element of the unknown. Who knows, maybe he gets called up and throws together a solid .260/.310 slash line all while swiping bases. Bare minimum, Saladino should start AT LEAST half the games. He provides + defense and is every bit as effective offensively at this juncture in their careers.

I can't wait until he strings together 4-5 games in a row of solid hitting and there's another new thread that asks "Has Avi finally turned the corner as a hitter?" He is what he is at this point. A very bad defender and base runner and mediocre at best/streaky hitter.

QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ May 23, 2016 -> 05:18 PM) Toolsy outfielders are to KW what rakes are to Sideshow Bob. Can't avoid them, can't stop getting smacked in the face with 'em. Just once, just one freaking time would I like the Sox to spend a premium draft pick on a refined college hitter with an advanced hitting approach. I don't care what position--I've been beating the Collins drum hard the last month but he's not the only one--Nick Senzel would fit the bill for instance. But no, KW will keep trying to achieve some kind of vicarious playing career success through outfielders who look like they should be all-stars but in actuality don't have the plate discipline or eye to hit major league pitching. I have no idea if Rutherford falls into that category--he could be the 2nd coming of Ted Williams for all I know--but the lack of importance the Sox seem to place on plate discipline (which really boils down to having the physical ability to recognize pitch type, speed and location combined with walking up to the plate with, you know, an actual plan in mind) is stunning. Especially when that describes exactly Robin, Buddy Bell and Frank, the best hitter the organization ever produced-all key figures within the organization. If the Sox pick Collins, Senzel etc. I will gladly eat this post. This was the funniest thing I've ever read on these message boards, legit laughing out loud. Well done

5/17 - Astros @ White Sox Game Thread

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 17, 2016 -> 12:12 PM) PM me there's some ways around them. I am intrigued. I hate watching the game tracker at work... -
QUOTE (staxx @ May 6, 2016 -> 12:51 PM) If Rodon will never be near a 75 pitcher, Nola will never be near even a 70. I agree. He'll be a long time 3 with a couple of years where he's a 2. John Garland-type IMO
-
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ May 6, 2016 -> 08:18 AM) The only thing that could hold Rodon back is his command. His 'stuff' has every chance to be as good as Sale's. He also has a better frame that should allow him to be a complete workhorse. .... Except his stuff doesn't have every chance to be as good as Sale's. People have thrown the word "raw" around with Rodon since I've been reading these boards. He's not really "raw" at all, in my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a "raw" athlete someone who has great physical gifts, but lacks fundamentals/coaching? Because if that's what "raw" is, then that is NOT Rodon. He's been through a good college program, played on the Jr. National team or w/e, and has had a year of Coop's tutelage. He's not really "raw" at all. I do think he'll improve, but he will never, ever be as good as Chris Sale. His slider might be a touch better, but his fastball is what it is at this point with respects to velocity for the most part. His changeup will hopefully one day become average, not close to Sale's. We're talking about the 2nd best pitcher in baseball over the last 4 years after Clayton Kershaw, a future HOFer. Rodon may crack the top 20 or so, but he'll never be anything close to Sale. Please don't take this as me being a Rodon hater. I'm not. I think he's going to be a very dependable 2 in this league, maybe even a borderline 1. But to say his stuff has a chance to be as good as Sale's is lunacy, IMO.
-
Rodon, though he could be a very good pitcher one day (key word: could) will NEVER be a 75-80 pitcher. I say that with 100% definitiveness, and yes, I know it's opinion, and it's impossible to actually be definitive in this scenario.... a 75-80 pitcher is a Sale/Arrieta/Kershaw. If you think Rodon will get to that level you're drinking way too much White Sox koolaide
-
I was told that unless Johnson throws a no-no, today will 99% be his only start for now. Take that FWIW
-
Rodon is slowly starting to drive me insane watching him pitch. Anyone who'd rather have Rodon over Nola right now is taking c razy pills
-
I'm deathly afraid of what Boegarts, Betts, Ramirez, Shaw, Papi, and Pedroia are gonna do to Danks on Wednesday.
-
hes the exact player you love to play with and hate to play against. He and Frazier are like yin and tang, white and black. Two polar opposites that complement each other perfectly. He's turned into my favorite player, yes because he's been very good, but also because his personality resonates with me

Matt Spiegal doesn't know a thing about baseball.....
