Red Sox acquire Chris Sale, White Sox get Moncada+

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:38 PM) These Kids Can Play Round 2? Note that the Sox made a significant leap between The Kids Can Play of 1999 to the 95-win division champs of 2000. If the Sox make intelligent moves for Melky, Robertson, and Frazier, we may have a really nice team by late 2018. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:36 PM) This. There is a reason they were ok with dealing him. Dude is a dickface Yep. This and Sale's historic lack of dominance in September make me OK with dealing him. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:32 PM) In a rebuilding situation, I would love to see him start in AAA until he passes the mark that would give us an extra year of control. Literally there is no good reason for him to be on the opening day roster. Exactly -

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:28 PM) I can't help but being disappointed. It's not even about the return. It's the fact that the greatest pitcher in the history of the White Sox and my favorite player is no longer on the team. Ed Walsh says hi. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:25 PM) Makes for an interesting situation with Abreu now. Where do you actually play Moncada? 2b, 3b? One would think the dynamic nature of his game would be limited by a LF assignment in USCF. I'd play Moncada at 2B. We haven't had a really good one since Ray Durham. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:23 PM) No...I'm really not. A future hall of famer for Moncada and Kopech isn't enough. The other 2 pieces have to be solid as well. I'll be a little disappointed if the Sox didn't get at least one other Top 100 prospect in the deal. But I won't riot if we *only* got Moncada and Kopech. Moncada alone will be really, really good. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) Wow. The top prospect in baseball plus. Awesome. Hate to see Sale go. Hope he makes the HOF. But Moncada is the guy who I said they could not get and they got. He's going to have to pitch well in September and October for that to happen. And that's why I'm not sad about dealing him. Very excited about Moncada, though. -

QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:19 PM) Agreed. Wish we could have thrown in another player on our side for Benintendi inclusion. I don't think that Dombrowski was going to trade Benintendi. -

One of those "two other prospects" had better be pretty good. If they're throw-aways, I'll be disappointed. -

QUOTE (South Sider @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:14 PM) BREAKING: Sale to #RedSox. Moncada, Kopech and two other prospects to #WhiteSox. I hope that one of those "other prospects" is Devers or Swihart. -

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 12:59 PM) Because best case scenario Sox are good again in 2019 and JBJ has 2 years left at that point. To me, getting JBJ means the Sox will still try to patch together a decent team in 17/18, which I guess deep down I am OK with. I know most here arent, however. If the Sox make the right moves with Sale, Melky, Frazier, and Robertson, they can definitely be competitive by 2019. What the Sox do with Quintana, who is under team control through 2020, will tell you a lot about their long-term plan. If they trade him, the Sox don't plan to compete until 2020 or later. If they don't, they plan on being competitive by 2019 at the latest. My guess is that they follow the latter time frame, as their attendance will dry up if they're bad for more than a couple of years. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 12:59 PM) Is Melky Cabrera or Jones really going to get Moncada or Benintendi added? If the Red Sox trade JBJ, they're going to need a corner OF after Betts moves back to CF. Since they're in "win now" mode, I think that Melky would help move that deal along. I don't think that Dombrowski wants to move Benintendi, so he's going to have to give up Moncada as part of a deal for Sale. If he doesn't, I'd do a deal with the Nats instead. -

QUOTE (South Sider @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 12:51 PM) Jon Heyman @JonHeyman 52s52 seconds ago Chisox asked for benintendi, as everyone has (bos wants to keep). Chisox likes Jackie bradley Jr. Very much, and others Yeah, I doubt that Boston will trade Benintendi after the way that he played down the stretch. I'd be happy with Bradley, Moncada, Kopech, Devers, and a lesser minor-league outfielder for Sale and Melky. That would address CF and 3B through 2020. -
As I said a couple of weeks ago, I wouldn't want to play the Indians right now.

QUOTE (Footlongcomiskeydog @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 11:54 AM) I'm wide awake and know the Tribe are a good baseball team. They've been kicking the Sox rear ends ( and most of the AL central) the last couple years. I just think the Cubs are the more talented team and are next to impossible to beat in a 7 game series. Their bats are gonna wake up tonight against Bauer. Hendricks at Wrigley in game 3 is almost a guaranteed victory as well. The Cubs got to Kershaw the second time around at Wrigley and I think they will do the same to Kluber. I hope I'm wrong, but I see the Cubs rattling off 3 straight Ws starting tonight. The Cubs have a better overall team, but the Indians are hot right now and that may end up mattering more. This is a team that held the vaunted Red Sox offense to seven runs over three games. Indians starting pitching may be dinged up, but it's really good and their bullpen is excellent. I don't know who will win this series but, as I said last week, I wouldn't want to play the Indians right now.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 25, 2016 -> 08:34 AM) Whether it's true or not, for people not old enough to remember, it certainly seems like the sox were ALWAYS also-rans. Ferris Bueller didn't go to Comiskey Park. Frank Sinatra didn't mention the sox, he had to be told not to forget about them. That scene of Ferris Bueuller was actually scheduled to be filmed at Comiskey, as John Hughes is a Sox fan. But they ran into time constraints or something, and it got moved to Wrigley. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferris_Buelle...f#Wrigley_Field

To put things in perspective, things were way worse as a Sox fan in the late '80s when they sucked, they couldn't draw flies, and JR was threatening to move the team to Florida. Their decline in the mid/late 90's was, in my opinion, probably a little worse than now from a fan's perspective, as this was pre-World Series and pre-stadium renovations. In both cases, though, the Sox got better within a few years and produced some exciting teams. I don't expect things to be all that much different this time.

Jose Abreu NEEDS to be Traded (Merge if need be)

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 20, 2016 -> 01:05 PM) Not only an average DH, but any kind of average bat, to be honest. We can't afford to be giving away productive bats for any reason right now, save some overwhelming offer. If he didn't struggle in the first half, where it seemed that he was fighting a nagging injury, his OPS probably would've ended up around .850 or so. So I don't see a skill erosion (yet), but one knock against Jose going forward is that he hates DHing. I also wonder about the accuracy of his age. Cuba is not known for its accurate record-keeping. -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:19 PM) You pitch him 5 so you have him for 7 too. Yeah, you could use Kershaw with a pitch count and Urias in long relief in Game 5.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 08:48 PM) cubs can do it because they are the cubs I bet money jake throws at him. That would be a dumb thing to do in a playoff game that they're currently losing.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:35 PM) 3-4 years factors in some growing pains at the big league level. I would expect that to occur in 2019/2020 during their first couple years in the big leagues. I generally agree with the outlook/forecast of the semi-rebuild (if they were to go that route), which is part of the reason I feel JBJ has no place in this plan since he's a free agent after the 2020 season. Keep in mind that Q also hits free agency at the same time as JBJ, and Eaton hits free agency a year later. Therefore, competing in 2019 and 2020 is probably the strongest argument for JBJ.
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:19 PM) Weren't they both in A ball this year? I don't see them contributing to the big league club until 2019 (two more seasons in the minors). That sounds about right. You said 3-4 years, and I think that's too long. Neither of those guys are going to spend appreciable time in AAA. Given that the Sox aren't nuking the team and doing a full rebuild, I think that they need to target 2019 as their expected date of competitiveness and rebuild/retool their team around that time frame. That would mean going forward with Q, Rodon, Fulmer, Eaton, Anderson, Jones, etc. And they should strongly consider either signing Frazier to a four-year deal or Abreu to an extension.
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 01:15 PM) It's not a 1 for 1 comparison. Acquiring JBJ comes at the expense of Chris Sale and guys like Devers, Kopech, etc. are 3 or 4 years away (at best) from contributing to the big league team in a meaningful way. JBJ is gone by then, so what's the point? Gomez costs nothing. Well not nothing exactly, but probably a contract similar to what the Sox gave Jackson last offseason. If you trade Sale, you have to build it around guys like Moncada and Ben that contribute immediately to the big league roster unless you are going burn it down full scale rebuild, which is simply not realistic under this management. More like two years away
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:02 PM) If Moncada or Ben aren't included, it's an absolute failure of a trade IMO even with JBJ and other well-regarded Red Sox prospects. I'll be pissed if they trade Sale for a package of JBJ, Devers, and Kopech plus lower level prospects or something similar. I agree with the above. The Sox need to get either Benintendi or Moncada as part of the package for Sale.
